HEAD COACHPAUL RICE

Paul Rice enters his 13th season as head coach for Oakland’s men’s and women’s cross coun-try programs. In the summer of 2006, Rice was named the first full-time coach in the program’s history as well as taking on head coaching duties for the new men’s and women’s track teams. Under Rice’s guidance, Golden Grizzly cross country has become one of the premier pro-grams in The Summit League, producing 33 all-conference runners, three runners of the year, two newcomers of the year and two Summit League championships in just seven seasons. Rice has earned Summit League Coach of the Year accolades three times. Rice also coached Oakland’s first-ever NCAA Championship qualifier in Mike Craze, who set a school record in the 3000-meter steeplechase. The 2008 cross country season also produced a new landmark in Rice’s career when he coached his men’s team to an 11th place Great Lakes Regional ranking, the highest the team has ever been placed during Division I. In 2005, Rice led the men’s team to its second conference championship in four years, as Oakland placed all five of its scoring runners in the top 15 to compile 38 points, edging South-ern Utah (42) for the title. The Golden Grizzlies were paced by Summit League Runner of the Year Adam Frezza who won the event. Four run-ners earned all-conference honors: Frezza and Paul Kulisek were named to the first team while Andrew Lawrick and Jason Young were second-team selections. The team also earned its first-ever regional ranking when it was 14th in the United States Cross Country Association Great Lakes Region poll.

Another successful season, 2003, saw both the men’s and women’s teams place second at the Summit League championships. The women were led by two-time Summit League Runner of the Year Kristie Kieffer (2003, 2000), who be-came the first Golden Grizzly runner to qualify for the NCAA championships since Oakland joined Division I when she placed 13th at the NCAA regional. In 2002, Rice and the Golden Grizzly men captured their first conference championship, breaking Southern Utah’s streak of five straight titles. A record six runners earned all-conference recognition on the men’s side while the women placed two on the all-conference team and had the newcomer of the year in Sarah Drouillard. Rice was named Summit League Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season. Rice took the helm in 1997 after serving one year as Oakland’s assistant coach. He graduated from OU in 1997 with a BA in general studies/human resources. Rice ran cross country at Oak-land from 1990-93 and was a three-year captain, earning all-conference honors 1991 and 1992, as well as all-region recognition in 1991. A resident of Eastpointe, Mich., Rice and his wife, Shannon, have three children: Olivia (8), Ethan, (5) and Abigail (2).

Men’s Team Hits New Highs En Route to Summit League Runner-Up Finish

When the Oakland University men’s cross country team laced up their running shoes for the 2008 season, the young roster had no idea how successful their team was capable of being. Within the first month of the season, however, all doubts seemed to be as far away as Oakland’s opponents in races. Junior Zack Jones set a record at the Tommy Titan Invi-tational on Sept. 6, when he became only the third runner in the meet’s 22-year history to finish in under 20 minutes with his first place finish of 19:59 in the four mile race. In addition, the men’s team was a mainstay in the Great Lakes Regional poll all season long, peaking at 11th place, the highest ranking Oakland had ever achieved at the Division I level. Things continued to fall into place for Oakland and they were named runner-up at The Summit League Champion-ship after falling to champion Southern Utah University by merely six points. Jones, with his third-place finish and new school record in the 8K race (24:28.3), was named to the Summit League first team, while sophomore Brandon Griffin (12th), se-nior Andrew Lawrick (13th), and freshman Kenny Wall (14th) were named to the second team. For Lawrick, this distinction was monumental, as the Baroda, Mich. native had been named all-conference all four years of his cross country career. With only two seniors lost to graduation and a lot of young talent coming back next season, the Golden Griz-zlies will look to surpass 2008’s successful campaign. “In the past, some of the best teams we’ve had were with older teams with a lot of juniors and seniors,” said head coach Paul Rice. “This year, we did extremely well with a young squad. We always knew the talent was there, but we weren’t sure how good they were going to be. Now, we know how well we can do with a young team.”

Summit League Commisioner Tom Douple, Zack Jones and Andrew Lawrick pose with the 2008 Summit League runner-up trophy. Both Golden Grizzlies were named to All-Summit League teams.

Women Continue to Make Strides as Two Juniors Step Up for OU

The 2008 cross country season began with a lot of promise, when freshmen Lia Jones finished the 5K at the Golden Grzizzly Open with a time of 18:45, 28 sec-onds ahead of second place. But when Jones went down early with an injury, the Golden Grizzlies looked within for leadership and found it with juniors Erica D’Angelo and Sara Lieblein. As the season progressed, the two began to lead the attack for OU and found themselves in the top of the pack meet after meet. At the Summit League Championship, D’Angelo and Lieblein placed eighth and 13th, respectively, earn-ing them both second-team honors and led the Golden Grizzlies to a fifth-place finish. Oakland will only lose one senior to graduation and with Jones back to full health, as well as a young and talented roster with a year of experience under their belts, the Golden Grizzlies will look to be a strong pres-ence during the 2009 season. “From this season, we know we have some great pieces in place,” said head coach Paul Rice. “We will have Lia back to full strength and between the great talent that we have now and picking up some fresh-men for next year, we’ll just have to find a way to stay healthy for next year.”

Juniors Sara Lieblein (second from left) and Erica D’Angelo (far right) were named to The Summit League second team for their top-14 finishes at the championship meet.

Dr. Gary D. RussiPresident, Oakland UniversitySouthwestern Oklahoma, ‘69

Gary Russi has served as Oak-land University’s president since 1996, and he held the position of interim president from 1995 to 1996. Under his leadership Oakland com-pleted its first strategic plan, 1995 - 2005. The 10-year plan paved the way for Oakland’s unprecedented growth - in stature and size - and is help-ing the university realize its 2020 vision. In April 2005 Russi an-nounced the university’s first-ever comprehensive campaign, “Innovation and

Opportunity - The Campaign for Oakland University,” with a goal of raising $110 million by 2010. The campaign is designed to propel the university to the next level in providing a comprehensive liberal education, raising funds for professorships, scholarships, research endowments, academic programs and improved facilities. The university has raised more than $100 million toward its goal through September 2008. Oakland University is a top-rated academic institution that is widely rec-ognized as a university on the rise. With a steadily growing student population which topped 18,000 in fall 2007, Russi has worked with the Oakland com-munity to maintain the highest caliber of academic quality and to build an infrastructure that retains the best features of a small campus setting while offering a large array of programs and services. With Russi’s support, OU has forged numerous partnerships and alliances in Michigan – and throughout the world. Together with business and industry, lo-cal health care organizations, corporations, and educational institutions, these collaborations are creating opportunities for achievement and growth. Under Russi’s leadership, Oakland has introduced more than 56 new aca-demic degree programs since 1995 and full-time faculty has grown to more than 500. These new programs and faculty members have drawn a greater number - and an even more talented group - of students to the university. Average high school GPAs and ACT scores of incoming freshmen continue to rise. Russi’s commitment to experiential learning with flexible class schedules, high quality facilities and classroom technologies, and a wide array of student services and research opportunities is helping Oakland grow into a distinctive university focused on delivering a unique and progressive undergraduate and graduate education. In addition, during Russi’s tenure, Oakland has invested - often with state support - more than $190 million to enrich environments for teaching, researching, learning, and living. Capital improvements include a $43-million Science and Engineering Building, a $37-million Recreation and Athletics Cen-ter, the $17.5-million R. Hugh and Nancy Elliott Hall of Business and Informa-tion Technology, the $32-million Carlotta and Dennis Pawley Hall, $21-million new student apartments and numerous building and facilities upgrades. This trend will continue with the Campaign for Oakland University’s goal of further capital enhancements to support the university’s growth. In 1998, Oakland University moved to NCAA Division I competition and adopted a new mascot identity, the Golden Grizzlies. Recognized as a confer-ence leader in student-athlete graduation rates, Oakland has earned 16 regular season Summit League championships (formerly Mid-Continent Conference) and 37 league championships in its first nine years of Division I competition.

Administrative Experience Russi joined Oakland University in 1993 as vice president for academic affairs where he was responsible for all academic programs, academic support services, research and several university wide administrative services. In 1995 he assumed the role of interim president. He held both positions until he was named president in 1996. Russi is also a professor of Health Sciences. Prior to joining Oakland, Russi was vice president for research and strate-gic planning at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa where he served as the university’s chief research administrator and promoted institutional direction

and support for faculty research endeavors. While there he was instrumental in focusing university staff resources and budgets to strengthen faculty research. Russi was also very involved there, as he is at Oakland, in supporting and pro-moting undergraduate student research projects. As vice president for research and strategic planning, Russi also led and managed the application of state-of-the-art information technology in the university’s administrative, educational and research activities. Russi’s administrative career at Drake University began in 1973 as a proj-ect coordinator in development and fund raising where he authored, co-au-thored and/or managed 42 funded grant or contract projects ranging from $200 to $900,000. tracyHUTHDirector of AthleticsThird YearOakland, ‘85 When one thinks of Oakland University athletics, one of the first names that comes to mind is that of second-year Director of Athlet-ics Tracy Huth. After all, Huth has been involved with Oakland Univer-sity athletics as a stu-dent-athlete, coach, and administrator since the 1980-81 academic year.

Huth was appointed Director of Athletics in October 2007 after serving as the interim director for one year, and immedi-ately put in motion an ambitious plan to enhance the overall Oakland University athletics experience, both for student-ath-letes and fans alike. The result thus far has been a more fan-friendly atmosphere at all OU events, and increasing student-athlete success both athletically and academically. During his first year as OU’s Director of Athletics, Oakland placed more student-athletes on The Summit League Academ-ic All-League teams than any other institution, and Golden Grizzly teams captured league titles in men’s and women’s soccer and men’s and women’s swimming and diving; and saw the school’s first individual league champion in track and field. The OU basketball programs were the only teams in The Sum-mit League to beat ranked opponents, and Oakland University also played host to The Summit League women’s soccer and men’s and women’s swimming and diving championships. In the coming year, OU will host the men’s soccer championship and will once again host the men’s and women’s swimming and diving championships. Prior to making the move into the athletics director’s of-fice, Huth served over nine years as an Associate Athletics Di-rector and Assistant Athletics Director, including a one-year stint OU’s Senior Associate Athletics Director where he was in charge of supervising the department’s operations. While an assistant director, Huth’s primary responsibilities were in the areas of program supervision, student-athlete services, and compliance. During his time as a departmental administrator, Huth has been involved in several league and national committees. In March 2006, Huth was appointed to a four-year term on the NCAA Swimming & Diving Committee. He has also served on the NCAA’s Academic/Eligibility/Compliance Cabinet (2001-05) and served as the tournament manager for the first and second-round games in the 2006 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tour-nament hosted by Oakland at the Palace of Auburn Hills. Huth currently serves as a member of The Summit League Joint Council, the league’s Budget Committee and Competition

Committee, and also chairs the Men’s & Women’s Swimming & Diving Sport Committee. The strides made by the athletics program during Huth’s tenure should come as no surprise to anyone familiar with his track record as a coach. Huth spent 11 years as the head coach of OU’s women’s swimming and diving program, establishing the Oakland program as the premier program in the country at the Division II level. His teams finished in the top three na-tionally in nine consecutive seasons, winning five consecutive national championships and three consecutive second-place finishes from 1990-97. Huth was named the NCAA Division II Coach of the Year three times for his team’s accomplishments. Only Kenyon College (17 consecutive Division III titles from 1984-2000) and Truman State University (six consecutive Division II titles from 2001-06) have posted more consecutive national championships in women’s swimming and diving, while only Texas (five consecutive Division I titles from 1984-88) and Stanford (five consecutive Division I titles from 1992-96) have matched the total of five straight, which stood as a Division II record until 2006. Huth began his coaching career at Oakland in 1985 as an assistant coach with the men’s swimming and diving program, a position he held for two years before taking the reins of the women’s program. Huth remained as the women’s head coach until 1998, when he stepped down to focus on his position as Assistant Athletics Director as OU made the move to Division I. But before Huth became well-known as the highly-success-ful coach of OU’s women’s swimming program, he earned rec-ognition as one of the top swimmers in the nation. Arguably the most accomplished student-athlete in OU his-tory, Huth earned a rare 24 All-America honors, claiming 13 individual national championships. Huth was a four-time na-tional champion in both the 200- and 400-yard individual med-ley, and was named NCAA Division II Swimmer of the Year three times. He remains the only swimmer in NCAA history to have won both the 200 and 400 IM four times. In 2002 Huth had the unique honor of being selected to the Oakland University Lepley Hall of Honor for a sec-ond time. He and is the only member to be enshrined twice. Originally named to the Hall in 1990 for his swim-ming accomplishments as a student-athlete, his second honor was in recognition of his coaching accomplishments. Huth earned his bachelor’s degree in secondary education from Oakland in 1985, and in 1996, Huth earned his master’s degree in sports administration from Wayne State University. He currently resides in Clarkston and has two children, Kara (a sophomore at OU and member of the dance team) and Chance.
