    BALL DISRUPTION

Ball Disruption is defined as an attempt by the defense to adversely affect the

normal flow of the offense by applying pressure to the football on every play. It

is unrealistic to expect turnovers on every play, but our goal is to create ball

disruption every time the ball snaps. If we do that, the turnovers will come in

bunches. Components of disruption are as followed. These plays will be

referred to as M.A.D. plays- Make A Difference plays. They will be logged and

shared within the group. There are no secrets; those that make these plays are

    THE PLAYMAKERS.

    BALL DISRUPTION

Ball awareness is essence of ball disruption. If we are aware of where the football

is and the manner in which it is being carried, we will understand the

opportunities for ball disruption. We want our tacklers to see more than the bll

carrier. We want to see the football. If we become more aware of the football

we can apply the following axioms for ball disruption:

    A. The QB is the most vulnerable ball carrier when he is in the pocket or when he

is running with the football. The opportunity to cause the QB to fumble are

greater than they are with any other offensive player.

    B. The ball carrier is vulnerable to losing the football when:

    1. He carries the ball away from his body

    2. He is being gang tackled

    3. He is switching the ball from what hand to another

    4. He carries the ball with his inside arm while near the sideline

    5. He does not see the tackler coming

    6. He takes a direct hit on the football

    C. Anytime our opponent practices poor ball security we must have enough ball

awareness to see this for what it is; an opportunity to gain possession of the

    football.

  • 8/10/2019 2009 Ohio Defensive Playbook

    12/163BOBCAT PRIDE 12

STRIPPING THE FOOTBALL1. If the ball is being carried in a secure manner, we want to put our hat through

the ball and wrap with both hands.

    2. If the ball is being carried in a loose, away from the body manner, we want thetackler to hat up the ball carrier and punch the football with the wrap-up hand to

    the side of the ball.

    3. If the ball carrier is running near the sideline and the ball is in the inside hand,

want the hat to go through the ball.

    4. If tackling a ball carrier from behind, we want to insure the tackle by grabbing

the shoulder pads at the back of the neck while either clubbing down on the ball

if it is being held loosely, or punching the ball out by reaching between theelbow and the body of the runner.

    5. When we are involved in the pass rush we have a great opportunity to club the

ball away from the QB by reaching our outside arm. Understand, the ball will

either be in the QBs chest before he starts his delivery or near his throwing

shoulder as he starts his throwing motion.

    6. When the ball carrier has been hit, by appearance controlled by the tackler, we

want the next man involved to tackle the ball and take it away.

    7. There are instances when a defender who is engaged by a blocker has no

recourse but to lunge and arm tackle the ball carrier. When faced with this

situation, grab for the ball if it is in the near arm of the ball carrier.

    8. Practical application: We will work very hard to teach ball stripping techniques.

In order to develop these techniques, we will adhere to the following practical

    format:

    A. We want to develop ball awareness as we practice against our offense

    B. We will exhibit ball awareness by using the techniques mentioned above

    on a daily basis.

    C. These techniques will be applied in 9 on 7, 7 on 7, group, or team periods

with no regards to which side of the ball is emphasized.

    D. Even during no contact practice one can exhibit ball awareness by simply

tapping the ball as you tag off the ball carrier.

    How to Eliminate Big Plays

    KEEP THE CUP

KEEP THE CUP is a concept we will use to

teach leverage vs. a ball carrier.

    3 LEVERAGE PRINCIPLES

    1. FORCE: THE DESCRIPITION OF

    RESPONSIBILITY FOR OUTSIDE

    LEVERAGE ON A BALL CARRIER.

    2. PURSUIT: THE DESCRIPTION OF

    RESPONSIBILITY FOR INSIDE

    LEVERAGE ON A BALL CARRIER.

    3. FILL: THE DESCRIPTION OF

    RESPONSIBILITY FOR THEMIDDLE PORTION BETWEEN

    FORCE AND PURSUIT.

KEEPING THE CUP GREATLY DIMINISHES THE

CHANCE FOR GIVING UP A BIG PLAY!

    16/163BOBCAT PRIDE 16

GOAL LINEThe goal line represents the last opportunity the defense has to stop the offense

    from scoring.

    1. What does it take on the Goal Line

    A) Attitude - nobody gets in our end zone

    B) Extra concentration and a higher intensity level on every play

    C) Big play mentality - somebody needs to rise to the occasion and make

    the big play.

    2. How to play at the Goal Line

    A) Maintain leverage, stay low and penetrate the offensive side of the ball.

    B) Play your responsibility first

    C) Play one play at a time

    3. What the Goal Line does for us

    A) Keeps points off the board

    B) Demoralizes the offense

    C) Puts momentum on our side

    D) Makes us a great defensive team

ONE PLAY AT A TIMEThere are 5 phases to every football play, each is of vital importance to the next.

You cannot have a successful play unless you execute each phase properly.

    1. Call: Get and understand each phase of the call and understand what it

    means to you.

    2. Recognition of Formation: We must recognize each offensive formation

and communicate it to each other. We must know its strength,

weaknesses, and tendencies and how each of these affect the call.

    3. Alignment: We must take the exact alignment required by the call and

dictated by the offensive formation. Always align in the best position for

you to execute your responsibility. 80% of all errors come as a result of

    poor alignment.

    4. Key: Your key is a tool to give you every advantage over what the offense

can do to you. It will never lie.

    5. Execution: If we have taken care of the previous 4 phases, then execution

becomes the key to playing great defense. We are going to execute with

    intelligence, desire, and enthusiasm.

There are a handful of plays (4 or 5) that will determine the outcome of

the game. We need to make the majority of these plays to WIN. Many of

these plays occur in the 4th quarter. We must be dominant in the 4th

quarter to be a great defensive team.

    DOWN AND DISTANCE

    THEORY

As a Defensive Unit, we must at all times know the down and distancesituation. Our opponents will, in most instances, classify themselves

according to down and distance as to the formations they will use, and the

type of play (pass) or (run-inside or outside) we should be expecting.

With this in mind, you should memorize the following down and distance

chart to better help you understand how we try to set our Defenses up and

prepare yourself for the situations that will present themselves.

    1st & 102nd & 1-2 (Waste Down)

    2nd & 3-6 (Normal)

    2nd & 7 or more (Long)

    3rd & 1-2 (Short)

    3rd & 3-5 (Medium)

    3rd & 6 or more (Long)

    A. 1st & 10

We must expect in this instance either pass or run and use one of our

combination defenses which gives us an excellent running defense plus a

strong passing defense. At times, due to calculated frequencies through

our scouting system, we may concentrate more emphasis on one phase of

their attack rather than the other in this particular down and distance.

Good time to offset or use sound stunt and cause blocking problems.

    B. 2nd & 1-2 - Waste Down

Many teams have a tendency to go for a home run play on 2nd & 1-2.

  • 8/10/2019 2009 Ohio Defensive Playbook

    21/163BOBCAT PRIDE 21

    C. 2nd & 3-6 yds (Medium)

In this situation percentages tend to show that most teams will favor their

running attacks, although this does not eliminate the possibility of the

pass. Due to such a percentage, we would tend to select one of ourrunning defenses that is designed to impair our opponents running game,

but still gives us ample pass coverage.

    D. 2nd & 7 or more (Long)

Due to a high frequency of pass plays by most teams in a 2nd & long

situation, we will concentrate our defenses stopping the passing game.

Good time to rush the passer.

    E. 3rd & 1-2 (Short)

We must expect our opponents to select their best offensive play in this

situation. We will definitely concentrate on stopping their best play with

our best running defense. Our theory is to meet strength with strength in

this situation. We must stop their offense for no gain or a loss in this

    situation.

    F. 3rd & 3-6 (Medium)

We regard this situation in theory the same as 2nd & Normal, but

whatever the offense selects to run against us, we must hold them to less

than 6 yards to force them into a kicking situation.

    G. 3rd & 6 or more (Long)

In this situation we find through percentages that most of our opponents

tend to rely upon their passing game more frequently than their running

game. With this in mind we will select one of our defenses that is

designed to give us maximum pass coverage. In other instances, we must

select one of our blitzing defenses to put pressure on the opposing

quarterbacks, thus disturbing the timing of their passing attack.

    DOWN AND DISTANCE

    EFFICIENCY

As a Defense, we determine whether we win or lose not only the game, but each play. Each down has its own criteria to show what has to be done

for us to win that particular down.

    A. 1stDown Hold the Offense to 3 yards or less.

    B. 2ndDownHold the Offense to half or less of the yardage needed for a

    first down.

    Strong Safety Play

Alignment and Keys Base rules apply vs. 12 and 21 personnel. Go to Y for your

alignment. Nickel rules apply vs. 10 and 11 personnel. Go to passingstrength for your alignment.

Vs. 2 speed, line up 10-12 yards deep and 1 yard inside #2 receiver.

Your key is QB to #2 receiver.

Coaching Points Slow to go as you basically walk out until you get your read. If #2

cracks the Nickel or Sam, fill outside off of the crack. Vs. tight split,

    make solo call.

Vs. pass, your number one responsibility is the post of the #2 receiver.

#2 goes to the flat, push over the top of the #1 receiver and play the

deep route. #2 goes under, turn and play the inside dig or post of the #1

    receiver.

Vs. Dig of the #2 receiver, flip your hips and help the corner on the

    post of the #1 receiver.

Vs. Bubble of the #2 receiver, get your eyes on the #1 receiver. If hes

blocking the corner, fill inside out and keep the cup. You are

responsible for the Fake Bubble pass and the Fake Jailbreak.

Eye discipline is a must to play Palms. Get your eyes right

Free Safety Play Same as above except for alignment rules. Vs. 12 and 21 personnel,

align away from Y. Vs. 10 and 11 personnel, align away frompassing strength (weak).

Vs. 2 speed, same coaching points apply as above for the SS.

Palms will be used in a double call. Know whether you are in Base

Rules or Nickel Rules. Then execute your responsibility according to

    the call.

Coverage concept that can be played vs. a 2 speed or a 1 speed

side depending on how it is called. Coverage responsibilities and

run fits depend on the call and formation. Pass responsibilitiesbased on route reading and relating.

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

    1. Can be played vs. all personnel groupings.

    2. Backfield action determines the run fits.

    3. 4 side Corners can press or bail as a change up.

    4. Double called most of the time because we only want 4 versus

    certain formations.

    5. Example of calls

    Strong Safety Play

Alignment and Keys Vs. 2 speed10 to 12 yard deeps and 1 yard inside the #2 receiver. Vs.

strong side of Pro formation (21 or 12 personnel)10 yards deep and 1

yard outside TE depending on where the ball is located.

Key is QB to #2 to #1.Coaching Points

Slow to go straight back at the snap. Start slow and increase your speed

as you key #2. If #2 is vertical, work inside and over the top. If #2 is

not vertical, rob the inside breaking route of #1 provided the QB takes

    you there.

Vs. 2 speed, receiver will block the Nickel, so fit inside the Nickel.

Always remember to make him right if for some reason he gets caught

inside the blocker. You should be responsible for the slant of #1 vs. three step drop if the

TE or #2 does not release vertically.

Be patient on an apparent under route or race route. You are still

responsible for him if he would turn vertically.

Fit on TE side with action to you is in between the Backers.

    Free Safety Play

    Alignment and Keys

Same as SS vs. 2 speed. Vs. 1 speed with TE on your side and ball on the hash, align 10 yards

    deep and inside the TE.

Vs. 1 speed and no TE, align over the ball with the ball on the hash.

Wider alignment vs. 1 speed is a must if the ball is in the middle of the

    field.

Key the QB to #2 to #1 receiver.

Coaching Points Run to you, fit inside the 2 Backers (Gap may vary). Run away, help on

    cutback.

Vs. a single receiver side (1 man), you must cut an immediate under

route by the receiver. Communicate with the Corner pre-snap.

Vs. 3x1, if #1 does not go immediately under, help on #3 vertically if

    QB takes you there.

You are responsible for the slant of #1 if #2 does not go vertical or if

you are on single receiver (1 man) side. Should be an interception.

Flat players take slant of #2.

    DESCRIPTION

Steal is a coverage used on a 1 speed side or dead side that puts

the Corner in a man technique vs. the single receiver or Y. This

allows the FS to take #3 strong if he releases vertically down thefield.

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

    1. FS Technique vs. a 3x1 formation is 3 to X. You have #3 strong

vertically down the field. If no vertical by #3, help on Xreceiver.

    2. Vs. a 3x1 formation, Will has the 1stthreat to the weak side

knowing the Corner is man on the #1 receiver. That could be the

    back on #3 strong.

    3. Vs. a 2x2 formation (Deuce) FS will make a Chiro call toCorner and Will alerting them that he has their back. Basically FS

is in a deep technique. Mike and Will have #2 and #3 weak

depending on releases. Corner is an aggressive press man

    technique on #1 receiver.

    4. Run fits depend on formation and what Coverage Steal is called

    with. Example: 4 Steal

    5. If single digit coverage 4 is called, check Steal vs. Slot Trips

    (11 Personnel).

Safety with Steal Technique (Usually FS)

Alignment and Keys With ball on the hash, align over the center (on the hash). Key QB to

#3 strong to the X receiver vs. a 3x1 formation. Vs. a 2x2 formation, align 2 yards outside the hash and 10 yards deep. Key the QB.

Coaching Points You have no run responsibility, but vs. a 3x1 formation always be

aware of the QB weak on the Q series.

Vs. a 2x2 formation (Doubles) give Corners and Will a Chiro call

and basically play a deep technique.

Think of pass responsibility vs. 3x1 as 3 to X. Check #3 strong first. If no vertical threat, help the Corner on X if the QB takes you there.

Coaching Points Your primary pass responsibility is the post of #3. If #3 does not go

If #3 cracks, fill outside the crack. As always, make the Linebacker

    Safety Play

Alignment and Keys Alignment is 12 yards deep and 2 yards outside the hash. Can be

adjusted due to splits or position of the ball. Key the QB and feel the

    uncovered linemen.

C-7 is the dead side alignment for the Safety vs. a single width, twoback formation (Slot). This allows you to be a run defender so key the

angle of the fullback. You must push back initially to protect vs. play

    action pass.

D-8 is the dead side alignment vs. a wing. Key the fullback for run

    support.

C-10 is the alignment of a Safety on the dead side of a slot trips or ace

    trips formation.

Coaching Points Push in your backpedal to and through your landmark which is three

yards inside the numbers until the QB or ball tells you what to do.

Remember you are a pass defender first. You must have great footwork,

    eyes, and knowledge of help.

You must be patient in that you must break when the ball is thrown.

You can cover a lot of ground if you get a great break on the QB. Eyes,

    Eyes, Eyes!

We need to disguise as much as possible without jeopardizing theintegrity of the coverage. If ever caught in a disguise turn and run to

    your landmark.

Play side Safety vs. run must keep the cup. At times you may be the fill

player, but when in doubt fill outside in to give the backside Safety and

Corner in pursuit a chance to make a play.

You should always fit inside the seam player vs. the screen game.

Dead side Safeties check for possible reverse.

Do not allow nasty splits to change your alignment too much. Offenseslike to tighten splits to out leverage us after the snap.

Safeties are responsible for the fake bubble pass and fake jailbreak. Eye

    discipline is imperative.

Possible slant technique by Corner with wide splits. Think wider

landmark at that time. More likely to be needed on single receiver side

    of a 3x1 formation.

Important that both Safeties are seeing the same thing to cut down

    distance between the two.

    DESCRIPTION

Used primarily versus Slot (21) and Ace Trips (12) to allow

Safeties to bracket the #2 receiver. Also allows the Corner to play

outside the #1 receiver. Still a Palms concept to a 2 speed side.

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

    1. Can be played versus 11 personnel 3 x 1 (Pro Trips).

    2. All Linebackers in run fits. Safeties out of run fit.

    3. Great for scissors type routes.

    4. Backside corner is man to man versus TE or X receiver.

    5. Different from 10, 11, and 20 calls. First call applies to Slot

family. 2ndcall applies to Pro family.

    6. Examples of calls:

Alignment and Keys Vs. Slot (21) and Ace (12) align 10 yards deep and over the center. Key

the QB to the #2 receiver.

Coaching Points You have no gap responsibility vs. the run. Fill where needed. You

should be a pretty aggressive run defender.

Your primary pass responsibility is the post of the #2 receiver. If there

is no post, read the QB. You may help on the dig of #1 or help the

    corner on the TE.

Can be played vs. 20 personnel. You would align to the 2 speed side

    and execute Palms responsibilities.

    Free Safety Play

Alignment and Keys Same alignment as Palms vs. 2 speed except you can align 1 yard

outside the #2 receiver. Depth still should be 10-12 yards deep. Key isstill the QB to the #2 receiver.

Coaching Points You still much crack replace vs. a crack by the #2 receiver.

Vs. smash you now have the corner route of the #2 receiver. SS has the

    post of the #2 receiver.

    Great vs. scissors routes.

Can be played vs. 20 personnel. You would be aligned to the singlereceiver side and have the post of #2 strong.

formations in 12 and 21 personnel groupings.

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

    1. Solid 8 man front with one gap run fits by Linebackers and

Strong Safety. Should be strong vs. the run.

    2. Double calls apply to the formations, not 1 or 2 speed sides.

    1. Example: Lock Zone Y vs. 21 PersonnelPlay Lock vs.

    3. It is usually involved in a double call as the second part of the

Alignment and Keys 3x5 as you come down off the TE. Your key is the QB to the backs.

You must feel the TE. Tan is the alignment that you slide to when Y motions across the

formation. Your run fits are now like 1X (China) in that you key the

    FB.

Coaching Points Primarily you are the force defender to the TE Side (D Gap). Take on

all blockers with inside arm and squeeze the alley. Play away you have

cutback outside the TE (D Gap).

Vs. Option slow play the QB to pitch. Do not get up field or attack the

    QB.

Vs. run away, eye the TE and 6 Tech. If the TE cuts off the 6 Tech, fit

in the C Gap. Be patient, the Y may cut off the end but he might

    recapture the gap.

Check for reverse with any run action away.

Your landmark pass drop is the top of the #s. Be very conscious of

your exit angle to your landmark. It is a natural tendency to work too

flat when someone shows in the flat. Make sure you basically V drop

through your landmark at ten yards to hold the curl that sometimes

    accompanies the flat route.

Vs. three step drop, run for width since there is no curl to buzz through.

Initial reaction is 2 step shuffle flat outside and then read QB. Vs. three

step, continue flat. Vs. five or seven step drop, think curl to flat.

As the flat dropper wheel rules apply. You must run with the second

    man through your zone.

You must be alert for of 4 verticals vs. Ace formation (12 personnel).

down to the U side and a deep middle Safety.

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

    1. Closed call = U

    2. Free Safety rolls down to U in Tite formation and plays 1 X

(China) rules for run fits. 3 on 2 (Trio) coverage on the backs

    with the two Inside Backers.

    3. SS rolls down to the pair in Pair Tite formation. Run fits are

based on what U does and the Fullback. 4 on 3 coverage on the

2 backs and U with the 3 Backers.

    4. Corner runs with any Z Motion.

    5. There is always a low hole plugger vs. the pass.

    6. Should be strong vs. the run because of the 8 man box.

    7. U motion vs. Pair Tite, SS must bump down into the core. Still

key the FB and U. Regardless of where U ends up, be alert

    for the flash.

    Strong Safety Play

Alignment and Keys Vs. Tite formation align 10-12 yards deep and over the tight end (Y).

You are the deep middle player. Key the QB. Vs. Pair Tite formation align on outside shade of U and at

Linebackers depth. Key U and the FB.

Coaching Points Run fit depends on the action of U and the FB. You must see both.

Fit could be in the D gap or the A gap depending on the play.

U motion puts you in the box still keying U and the FB. Regardless

of where U ends up, always be alert for the flash.

Pass coverage responsibility is 4 on 3 man coverage on U and the 2

backs with the 3 Linebackers. Sort it out on play action.

If you end up on a back blocking, add on. Sack the QB.

As the deep middle player, think post of the #1 receiver vs. pass. Do

not get fooled on play action pass even though it is a heavy run

    formation.

    Free Safety Play

Alignment and Keys Vs. Tite formation, align in a tan alignment on the U side. Your depth

is at the heels of the Linebackers. Key the FB for your run fit.

Vs. Pair Tite, align 10-12 yards deep over the flex side Tackle. You are

    the deep middle player.

Coaching Points Your run fits depend on where the FB goes. (China run fits). Be alert

for Power and Guard pull. Track the puller. This is vs. Tite formation.

Your coverage responsibility is 3 on 2 (Trio) on the 2 backs with the 2

Inside Backers. This is vs. Tite formation. Sore it out vs. play action.

Vs. Pair Tite when you are the deep middle player, think post of the #1

receiver. Do not get fooled on play action pass even though it is a

    heavy run formation.

If you end up on a back blocking vs. pass, add on. Sack the QB.
