A STORYOF SUCCESS
Specialising for over 50 years in the measurement of viscosity,
rheology and texture analysis, Lamy Rheology has seen the scope of
its business gradually expand over the years.
Initially, the exclusive distributor of the Contraves brand until 1991,
then of Mettler-Toledo and Rheometric Scientific, Lamy then
started to design its own instruments to complement those
already offered by these firms.
The entire range of Lamy Rheology rotating viscosimeters and
rheometers has been developed and is manufactured in France,
in our premises located near Lyon. Our instruments are sold
worldwide through quality dealers.
Of course, Lamy Rheology’s expertise does not stop there:
“We provide you with increasingly high-performance products,
such as the new RM100i, a fully digital industrial viscometer.”
Lamy Rheology provides all its customers with a complete range of
services:
“Our team of technicians provides you with quality after-sales
service: calibration and maintenance for our entire range as well as
for the CONTRAVES, METTLER and RHEOMETRIC SCIENTIFIC
brands.”
“Our application laboratory is at your disposal to provide you with
efficient advice when next choosing measurement instruments.”
Please contact us regarding any requests for training sessions.
Each day, Lamy Rheology strives to meet the legitimate expectations
of customers who place their trust in us.

HIGHLIGHTS
Pt100 probe
Because we believe that a product’s viscosity is
inseparable from its temperature, all our viscosimeters
have a Pt100 temperature probe. It’s just not optional!
Motor + card
State-of-the-art electronics combined with a
springless measurement principle, ensures a
wide measurement range and excellent reliability,
reduces maintenance, and does not require support
levelling.
Bayonet coupling
Because simplicity and strength are two essential
qualities for a measurement apparatus, all our
instruments have been fitted with bayonet
couplings for the past 20 years.
Application laboratory
Nothing can replace testing that is why our
application and expertise laboratory is at your
disposal to ensure our instruments meet your
needs throughout their entire service life.

RHEOLOGY KNOWLEDGE
DYMANIC VISCOSITY η (ETA) :
It is defined by the NEWTON equation:
And quantify measurement of internal friction of fluid.
His determination needs to apply to the fluid a Shear rate (D), and tomeasure the resistant Shear stress (τ) to this rotation.
SHEAR RATE: D (γ)
is the shearing which subjected by the product in the application. Itis known for measuring geometries with small gap. It is not thespeed of rotation of the bob (in rpm !).
τ = η * D en Pa.s
τ = F / S in Pa (N / m2)
D = dV / dx in s-1
For memory :1 Pa.s = 10 Poises or1 mPa.s = 1 cPoises
Either a sheared fluid, by a laminar move (dV), between two parallelplates with a surface (S) and separate by a distance dx.
SHEAR STRESS: τ (TAU)
There is the shearing force (F), with which the sample answers to theshear rate (D), divided by the contact surface (S).
RHEOLOGY:
There is the « science » of « flow ».
Associated physical measurements, realised with the hand of Rheometers, enables the visualisation of the behaviour of the product in various flow , temperature andtime conditions .
RHEOGRAMS:
displayed curves of the flow behaviour of a fluid.The curves τ = f(D) enables, by adapted fitting, the accessto direct related parameters with the application.
ROTATING VISCOMETER:
a - With coaxial cylinders
The fluid is sheared between two coaxial cylinders, withradius Ri and Ra and a length L, by a laminar move whichare breaking down in multi-layer with different angularspeed from 0 (for the layer in contact with the fixed cylinder)to ω0 (for the layer in contact with the rotating bob). Therelative move of layers towards others give, a shear rate Dand one Shear stress τ.
By imposing ω0 and measuring M, the resisting torque tothis rotation, we calculate D and τ according:
b- With Cone-Plate:
The fluid is placed between a Plate and a Cone with angle δ (< 3°).The cone, maintained to a constant speed induce a laminarshearing move. In those conditions, τ and D are constant inthe gap, according:
δ = Ra / Ri Ri / Ra > 0.92
Shear stress:
Trep =(1+δ2 / 2 δ2) * (M / 2πLRi2)
Shear rate:
Drep = ω * (1+ δ2 ) / (δ2 - 1)
Rq : The determination of D is possible only if the gap is small.
(i.e. DIN / ISO 3219 Standard).
Rq : You would be vigilant on the sample volume including in the
gap, because the great influence of the radius R on the τ value !

Type Newtonian Pseudo-plastic Plastic
One sample presents a plastic behaviour, when his viscosity
decrease when the shear rate increase, but from one original
shear stress upper than 0, called YIELD VALUE (Tau 0), shear
stress under which the product doesn’t flow. It behave like a solid
body.
One pseudo-plastic sample
has a viscosity which decrease
when the shear rate increase:
This flow behaviour is due to
the molecules form and to
their internal structure:
A sample is named newtonian
when his viscosity stay
constant, whatever the shear
rate is. Iit is not necessary to
define exactly the shear rate
for the measurement. Just
the temperature is important.

STUDY OF DIFFERENT RHEOLOGICAL BEHAVIOURS
The THIXOTROPY
One thixotropic product is a
sample for which the variation of
viscosity in function of shear
rate is associated to a variation
trough the time.
Owe talk about Thixotropy or
Rheopexy, with the condition of
REVERSIBLE Transformations:
frozen or solidification.
Causes of thixotropy:
- Molecular structure - Particules mixing
- « Château de cartes » with layers - Ball loose Package…
