No medium on earth is more universal, more engaging or more uniting than music.

Cantos Music Foundation provides a place where music brings people together, creates connections and builds communities through this powerful channel.

This year has been an exciting year of building communities through the power of music. As our National Music Centre project gains momentum, the Calgary community and the music community at large are coming together to make this dream a reality.

Our programs and collections continue to have real impacts for school children, seniors, emerging artists and music lovers at large and our passion for collaboration and cooperation has allowed us to create synergies among other community and cultural organizations. We are pleased to provide you with this annual Report to the Community to share some of the ways we’ve helped make our community stronger through music. Enjoy.

Andrew Mosker, Executive DirectorCantos Music Foundation

CollaborationsOne of Cantos Music Foundation’s fundamental values is collaboration. Our team works with numerous other community and cultural organizations to help use music as a conduit for creativity, cooperation and community. Our partners in 2009 included:

CollectionThe most notable addition to the Cantos Collection this year was the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame Collection, founded by Canadian country star Gary Buck. More details on the amazing collection can be found in the following pages. Other notable additions in 2009 included:

1939 StorytoneThis is an extremely rare and historically important instrument. The first Storytone piano was built and displayed at the world’s fair in 1939 in a joint venture between Story & Clark and RCA. The 1944 model acquired by Cantos this year, has regular strings and action but no soundboard - the sound is amplified by pickups and a speaker system making the Storytone the world’s first practical electric piano.

Bulbul Tarang

A bulbul tarang (or Indian banjo) is a string instrument from India and Pakistan. Its name literally means “waves of nightingales”.

The instrument employs two sets of strings, one set for drone, and one for melody. The melody strings run under a key plate with keys similar to those of a piano or, more often, typewriter.

Bradley and Karen Casey generously donated this interesting instrument to Cantos in 2009.

Zuckerman single manual harpsichordIn the mid-1970s, Dr. G. G. Jamieson thought it might be fun to build a harpsichord – so, he ordered a kit and he did just that. Dr. Jamieson painstakingly assembled hundreds of parts and built himself a sturdy, fully-functional harpsichord. Of course, he didn’t play, so once the instrument was assembled, he was at a bit of a loss what to do with it. For more than 30 years, Dr. Jamieson held onto the Zuckerman single manual harpsichord until 2009, when he found an organization that could make great use of it – Cantos! With this generous donation, Cantos will take early keyboard music on the road for children’s education programs.

1941 Knabe Symmetry grand pianoThe Cantos Music Collection made significant strides in filling the Art Deco era gap in its piano collection. With the addition of the 1944 Storytone and this 1941 Knabe Grand Piano, visitors to Cantos will revel in the beautiful lines and opulent styling of these pieces. The Knabe is particularly interesting because of its symmetrical shape – something relatively unheard of in grand piano construction. This small and beautiful piece was generously donated by Steve W. Graupe.

Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame CollectionAs part of our vision to build the National Music Centre, we acquired the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame Collection currently located on the Stampede Grounds in 2009.

Previously owned by Deb Buck, widow of legendary Alberta artist, producer and Hall of Fame founder Gary Buck, the acquisition builds on Cantos’ one-of-a-kind music collection and will be used extensively in programming for children, seniors and everyone in between. A fact Buck says convinced her that Cantos and the Hall of Fame were a perfect fit.

“When I spent some time at Cantos and saw the way they use their collection to bring music to children,

I knew this is what Gary would have wanted for the Hall of Fame,” says Buck. “He wanted the artifacts and memorabilia to teach people, especially children, about country music in Canada – and Cantos is the perfect organization to do just that.”

The Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame Collection includes photographs and memorabilia from Canadian Country stars ranging from Hank Snow to Terri Clark from kd lang to Anne Murray as well as people who contributed to growing Canada’s country music scene in other ways.

We opened the Hall of Fame to the public during the 10 days of Stampede this year and saw thousands of people through the doors

We are also in the middle of a massive effort to track down and contact all of the artists and their families to talk about nearly 1,300 pieces of memorabilia, their stories and the future of the Hall of Fame Collection within the National Music Centre. We have been able to find about 30 per cent of those with memorabilia in the Hall of Fame Collection and continue to search for others.

The National Music Centre ProjectThis has been the year the Cantos National Music Centre project came to life! Through our international architectural competition and public presentation process, Calgary, Alberta, Canada and the world now know what we’re up to here in the East Village.

The Cantos team is working hard to secure funding for the national music centre project. A major campaign is required to finance an iconic facility on the King Eddy site and adjacent sites as well as maintain as build an operating endowment to ensure the long-term sustainability of the centre.

Cantos’ national music centre project is one of 15 championed by Calgary Arts Development to city council as much-needed arts space and all three levels of government have been positive about the project. We continue to discuss the possibilities on a regular basis.

In the meantime, architectural partner Allied Works is busy with the pre-design phase of the project. We are anticipating that work will begin on the site sometime in 2011.

On the marketing side, our team, together with Vancouver’s Identica, is busy conducting market research across the country to give us some direction on a new brand for the project. To date, we have conducted online and telephone interviews as well as a very interesting dialogic research session with a number of stakeholders and members of the public here in Calgary.

Treasurer’s ReportCantos Music Foundation is committed to achieving our mission, which is “to create engaging music experiences for the community using our unique collection, our cultural spaces and our expertise” as responsible stewards of all resources entrusted to us. We strive to achieve our mission as effectively and efficiently as possible by making every effort to maximize our resource base through improving our programming, broadening our audiences, increasing efficiencies and generating revenue from a wide range of sources.

This year, both revenue and expenditures have increased mainly due to the efforts towards building the National Music Centre (NMC) project. The number of staff increased, all devoted towards fundraising efforts for the NMC, successfully resulting in increased donations and a strong foothold in securing future funding for the project. Collection costs increased mainly due to the acquisition of the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame Collection and programming costs increased due to a higher volume of facility rentals and number of students attending our education programs.

Thank you to those who supported Cantos Music Foundation and the National Music Centre project, including our donors, volunteers, community partners, and other stakeholders who have generously donated your money, time and support for building communities through the power of music.
