GOLF: Team will pushhard to reach successunder 71 at area to qualifyfor the Valley IndividualChampionship.
This season’s team isled by Kirsten, AmandaRudd and Jordon Keyser. All three individuals hadfull golf schedules thissummer.
“So far in this early sea-son all three girls have con-sistently shot under 40,”Oetinger said. “Along withthe top three ladies, Racha-el Hernandez has playedvery well and is also man-aging a very difficult aca-demic schedule.
“These girls will push
each other all year and willonly make our team bet-ter.”
On top of the outstand-ing play by the top fourgirls, there is a solid groupof girls that are challeng-ing each week for the fiveand six spots. Mari Mober-ly, Brianna Smith, KristenEmerick and AshtonMearse are working hardto become consistent play-ers.
“We have two brand-new players, MarishaBrooks and Maggie Brew-er,” Oetinger said. “Mar-isha is a first-year playerworking hard to develop
her game. Maggie is an up-and-coming freshman thathas learned quickly.”
To date, the team wasscheduled to play Selma atRidgecreek but the Bearsfailed to show.
“We played a practiceround and Rudd was ourlow golfer with a score of38,” Oetinger said. “Jordonwas second with a 43 andKirsten and Rachael tied at46.”
“This team is highly mo-tivated and has made it agoal to reach the CIF finalsagain,” Oetinger said. “Thisteam is the most well-rounded ladies team thatwe have had at Yosemite.”

Mustangs sports will befull of firsts, new AD says
Forcing a team attitude
Pat Lynch, a 1987 graduate ofYosemite High School, was hired on as JVcoach in 1991 and coached boy’s basket-ball at Yosemite for nine years — froshfour years and JV five years. Now he willcoach the first frosh/soph team.
Lynch graduated from Fresno StateUniversity in 1993 with a degree in physi-cal education and human performance.
“This will be as challenging a year asour JV football team will need to over-come obstacles with the diminishingfrosh programs,” said Lynch. “Higher play-er counts can mean one of two things — adistraction or a positive team atmo-sphere by kids understanding their roleson the team.
“I hope the last frosh team won’t bethe end of the frosh program due to theeconomy. As a staff, we believe that thefrosh program is something that has putour program on top in the last 10 years.Without it, we still need to developyoung talent and give kids a chance tomake a difference in our program. It isgoing to take a lot of coaching and com-munication to get everybody on the samepage and headed in the same direction.”
What do frosh sports provide?“They provide an opportunity for
more students to enjoy playing an extra-curricular activity that they may not dowith doubts about their individual skills. They develop skills in players at a timewhen they may not have been able toplay Pop Warner football due to size orother issues.”
How is this team going toovercome that?
“We are going to overcome that obsta-cle through our coaching style. We aregoing to work on getting everybodyready to play and be an integral memberof the team. There are many teams to bepart of: offense, defense and six differentspecial teams.
“Each role is just as important as theother and each one is needed to be suc-
cessful on Friday nights.“We want our kids to play hard every
down and not save themselves. If they gettired we will sub in the next guy so thatour team is working at an optimum levelfor all four quarters. If we instill that theteam is more important than the individ-ual we will be able to accomplish ourgoals.”
What can we expect from thisyear’s team?
“This year’s team will be talented atevery position. We have personnel thatare returning from the frosh team as wellas a good mixture of incoming kids thatwill fit in and help us out.
“Returners on offense include QBTyler Clayton 5-11, 140 pounds; RB’sBobby Woolsey 5-8, 150 pounds; Alex

For Minarets High School all sportingevents will be loaded with firsts. The firstCIF interscholastic contest was held onAug. 20 with the Mustangs’ volleyballteams competing at Clovis North in ascrimmage. On Sept. 2 the Mustangskicked off its first-ever season in a match-up with their first-ever opponent at Liber-ty High-Madera Ranchos.
Minarets athletic director Dave Hammdoubles as the vollyball program’s headcoach and will lead the new squads withBob Lofgren as his assistant.
“Although we are working on ‘paper’right now, we plan to have two teams ingirl’s volleyball — a JV team and a fresh-man team,” Hamm said. “Of course, thetruth be told, the two teams will really betwo freshman teams. But we hope to getthem up to speed as quickly as possible.”
Hamm coached for many years atYosemite High in the girl’s volleyball, boy’s basketball and boy’s tennisprograms.
The Minarets team has a full schedulefor September that includes a game atYosemite High on Sept. 17 as well asmountain neighbor Mariposa on Sept. 22.
“We are still looking for games in Octo-ber since all schools will be in league bythen. It has been a little harder to sched-ule in between the league requiredgames,” Hamm said.
Hamm was pleased to be able to getLofgren to assist in the volleyball pro-
gram.“Bob recently retired from coaching
and teaching in Modesto and has settledin Coarsegold. He brings a lot of experi-ence to the program and we are reallyhappy to have him,” said Hamm.
Steve Lopez has been hired as theboy’s head basketball coach.

LYNCH: Team hastalent at every position
Chalk Talk with Coach Lynch
LeadershipLeadership is so important not only in sports but also in life. In our program we
are asking our kids to play a vital role to be a stand-up guy and lead by example. It’snot always the team captains that are the only leaders but everybody on the teamthat plays the role.
We use this as a training ground for our players to be future leaders in ourcommunities and in their own families. Someday these men are going to need tolead their families to success by being a positive role model to their children.
Leadership — helping others to victory.

The Badger boys’ teamimproved on its 2006 third-place finish and its 2007 fin-
ish when the team put to-gether a second-place fin-ish.

The Yosemite High School Bad-gers football team will kick off its33rd season of gridiron actionwhen it opens at San Joaquin Me-morial’s Panther Stadium tomor-row night.
The CoachYosemite head football coach
Aaron Eames is 97-57 (.588) in his14th season as the Badgers headcoach. He is 2-1 against the Pan-thers in the last three seasons.
The BadgersComing off their ninth consecu-
tive winning season, somethingthat has not been accomplished atYosemite in more than 30 years, the Badgers enter the 2009 seasonwith a mixture of returning letter-men and youthful depth.
The team will have 14 return-ing lettermen and eight startersfrom an 8-4 team a year ago thatreached the Division III playoffslosing to eventual championTehachapi.
Since Eames has taken over theprogram (1996 season), the Bad-gers have gone 97-57 with four Di-vision III Central Section champi-onship game appearances and the2002 and 2004 titles.
“Returning to Division III lastyear was good for us and we arecertainly one of the favorites,”Eames said. “But this team has tocome together as a team for us tobe successful.”
Yosemite reached the CentralSection playoffs in 2008 defeatingDinuba in the third round 31-24but failing to get Tehachapi,62-41.
On the defensive side of theball, the team brings back fourstarters from last season.
One of the team’s strengthsthat Eames points out are the skillpositions on defense, includingtwo-time All-North SequoiaLeague safety Jackson Glines (6-1,180 pounds) who collected 91tackles (54 solo) with three inter-ceptions and four fumble recover-ies during the 2008 season.
Glines is joined once again byAll-League defensive back DetriDunn 6-1,180 pounds with 48 tack-les (23 solo) and two interceptionsand Garrett Yoder (6-2, 190
pounds), who finished the seasonwith 89 tackles (41 solo), foursacks and four fumble recoveries.
Offensively, the Badgers lost athree-year quarterback and sever-al experienced running backs andface the task of replacing four start-ing offensive lineman.
“Our offensive line is fast andathletic, but we will need for themto take some huge strides,” Eamessaid.
So once again, the Badger coach-es will rebuild the team with thetalent at hand and find a way tomaintain their prominence in theValley.
Coaching changesFor the 2009 season, there will
be some changes in the staff due tobudget cuts and the lack of fund-ing for the freshman program.
All incoming freshman will bepart of the Junior Varsity footballteam this year.
The Junior Varsity staff will beHead Coach Pat Lynch, Larry Ar-cher, Matt Haynes, Phil Branstet-ter and Brian Johnson. The Varsitystaff will consist of Head CoachAaron Eames, Erik Peterson, KentLincoln and Richard Joseph.
“We have funded a frosh teamwhen other programs couldn’tand have not gone with a frosh pro-gram in some time so we are sorryfor those frosh kids that decide notto come out,” Eames said.
“We want to encourage all stu-dents to come be a part of the foot-ball program and to help make ourteams stronger.”

At outside hitter, thelady Badgers have seniorsLanae Contero and HillaryPrince, who bring experi-ence, dedication and poiseto the team.
“They have been on varsi-ty for three years and havebecome very seasoned ath-letes,” Thacker said. “Bothbring well-rounded playand they have both addedstrong defensive play andpassing and serving.
“Two more seniors, Jen-nifer Schoonard, whoplayed last season and is avery versatile player, andLauren Miller, who joinedus from the Las Vegas area, both add help to our defen-
sive play,” Thacker said.
Also returning is thestarting setter CourtneyThacker. Last season, Thack-er shared the court with se-nior Taylor Alberta. Thisseason, Thacker runs the of-fense, setting all the wayaround.

The Yosemite Badgers water poloteams are set to improve on last season’srecord, which saw the Badger boys mak-ing it to the semifinal round of the playoffsbefore losing to Redwood High School.
The girls teamThe lady Badgers made it to the quarter-
finals before falling to El Diamante. But2009 is a new season and head coach Bran-don Brokaw has already set one goal.
“The girls have had an up and down sea-
son so far,” Brokaw said. “But we haveplayed really well in our last tournament. Our focus this year is to win our firstleague title.”
The boys teamThe boys’ team, coached by Jim Clark,
returns a good core of young, fast playersin 2009.
The Badgers are led by goalie AnthonySmith, Drew Tapia and Jacob Jackson. Wes-ley Kudela, Kaiden Grossi and Kyle Oja,who were promoted late in the 2008 sea-son, will also provide experience to theBadgers.

WATER POLO SCHEDULE 2009
8 Thursday, September 10, 2009 • Sierra Star, Oakhurst, California www.sierrastar.com
BY MIKE HACKWORTH
