With one goal in mind, Frank Tate returns for his sixth season as head coach of his alma mater.

“I want to bring a state championship to Lost Creek,” Tate said. “It haunts my dreams.”

With what he has done in his first five years as the leader of the Hawks, that statement isn’t farfetched.

The energetic player’s coach has recorded a 67-61 career record includ-ing averaging almost 15 wins a season in the past four years.

In 2006, Tate led the Hawks to an 18-9 record, finishing just two wins shy of becoming the first team in program history to record a 20-win season. That year, SHHS finished 6-2 against AA and AAA schools.

But it was 2007 that may have been Tate’s fin-est season at the helm.

Tate took an young group that had just three seniors to a No. 4 ranking after a 5-4 upset over then No.-3 Williamstown. The win was one of three upsets of ranked opponents in 2007 including a 10-5 victory over then-No. 6 AA Clay County.

Last year, he was selected as an assistant coach for the North squad in the North-South All-Star game in Charleston.

A 1995 graduate of South Harrison High School, Tate’s no stranger to leading the Hawks to success.

As a catcher, Tate finished his Hawk career as a four-year letterman in baseball where he garnered all-county honors (Fr., Jr., Sr.), All-Big 10 Con-ference honors (Jr., Sr.) and all-state honorable mention his senior year. He also earned three varsity letters in football where he was a two-time all-Harrison County member and also earned All-Big 10 and All-State recognition.

In 1990 as a 13-year-old, Tate led his Harrison County Babe Ruth All-Star team to the National Championship Series in Jamestown, N.Y., where he finished the tournament with a .600 batting average and was named the tournament’s most outstanding hitter – one of only two West Virginians to ever win the award.

After graduating from South Harrison, Tate earned his degree from Fairmont State College in 2003. He currently teaches history at SHHS while also serving as the offensive coordinator for the Hawks’ football team. He resides in West Milford with his wife Justina and son, Dane.

Previously known more for his above average defensive abilities, Chipps changed that mindset last season with a breakout year at the plate in his first year taking over full time at first base. One of the hardest workers and under-rated players on the team, Chipps provided head coach Frank Tate with a reliable hitter in the middle of the order as the then-junior hit both fourth and fifth last season while continuing to lead the infield. His .492 career slug-ging percentage ranks fifth all-time among SHHS players over the last six seasons.

2008 (Jr.): Named to All-Harrison County second team...first season as full-time starter at first base...set career-highs in every offensive category including batting average (.380), on-base percentage (.453) and slugging percentage (.494)…30 hits were third most by a Hawk junior in last six years and fourth best overall in last six years... finished in the top 10 in Harrison County RBI leaders with 22, which was third on team...finished third on team with.380 batting average...Had nine game hit-streak, third best at SHHS over last six seasons...Went 2-for-3 with a double against Clay County...hit two-RBI single in seventh inning to give SH 6-4 victory over Gilmer County...finished a homerun shy of hitting for the cycle, going 3-for-3 with three RBI in a 14-2 win over St. Marys...went 3-for-4 with three RBI in 17-7 loss to Wirt County... played American Legion baseball for Clarksburg Post 13…recorded a Post 13 best .986 fielding percentage while committing just one error all season...hit first career legion homerun in 3-for-4, four-RBI performance against Shinnston Post 31 at Frank Loria Field.

2007 (Soph.): Split time at first base with Shaun Wilson while also serving as the designated hitter…finished with 25 total bases and 10 RBI...Three doubles on the season was fifth on team...went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a double in 8-0 win over Clay Battelle...played for Clarksburg Post 13 American Legion, serving as everyday first basemen...missed second-half of season Legion season with shoulder injury...also saw action at third base for Post 13.

A 6-foot-4 athlete, the three-sport letterman will look to contribute even more for head coach Frank Tate this sea-son. Atha came off the bench in 2008 as a sophomore to play important roles in the outfield while also seeing time at first base.

2008 (Soph.): Recorded first career hit in 9-8 loss to St. Mary’s…finished season with .286 average (2-for-7).

An energetic second baseman, Chipps provide much needed depth to the Hawks’ middle infield. The aggressive 5-foot-5 sophomore has proven he’ll remain unfazed by higher competition as he battles for a starting position this season.
