Since founding in 1981, SMITH+SMITH has planned and designed many distinctive and successful projects. With 28+ years of experience, SMITH+SMITH has remained true to their mission of combing the art and science of a site, to design memorable and enduring spaces that inspire people to interact with their surroundings. With over 800 projects and 150 awards, SMITH+SMITH understands the collaborative efforts necessary for success. Our projects have received awards from American Institute of Architects, Builder Magazine, the Urban Land Institute, Conde Nast, and Zagat. Our design vision for each project is guided by the cultural, historical, and/or unique characteristics of each project. We recognize that flexible and adaptable design styles are key to creating outstanding and enduring projects. Combining our traditional principles of land stewardship with today’s sustainable practice rating systems (LEED, Build It Green, Bay Friendly Landscape Guidelines, etc.) we successfully achieve sustainable building goals and certifications. Our partnership-oriented team of professionals approaches all projects with a dedication to design and client satisfaction. Our project controls in project management, knowledge of current landscape construction costs, ability to prepare concise opinions of probable construction costs for budget allocation and value engineering are highly valued and relied upon by our Clients and appreciated by design teams. We generate clear, goal-focused communication. We effectively manage communication through comprehensive meeting agendas and goals, summary documentation and outreach during public workshops and through all stages of the project process to achieve consensus. SMITH+SMITH has successfully provided professional services in a wide range of project types, market segments, and project construction budgets. We have designed projects with landscape specific construction budgets as large as $25 Million, such as the Four Season Hualalai Resort in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, as well as small custom residential projects with landscape budgets of $100,000. SUSTAINABLE PROJECT EXPERIENCE

Since founding in 1981, SMITH+SMITH has planned anddesigned a number of memorable and enduring spaces thatinspire people to interact with their surroundings. In thepast 5 years, 75% of SMITH+SMITH projects have beendesigned for LEED Certification/ Compliancy or GreenPoints. However, the firm’s philosophy of sustainabilitybegan many years before the development of the USGBCmovement and guidelines. For almost 30 years,SMITH+SMITH has applied principles of conservation andecological awareness to their landscape design andservices. He also brings a solid background in technicalprogramming, cost analysis, and a detailed understanding ofsensitive environmental locations.

For more than 20 years, Marty has designed irrigation systems since 1982. He has acquired a vast knowledge of irrigation design and consulting principles and practical applications in his 27 years of experience. He has successfully completed over two thousand projects including parks, municipal/public facilities, schools, streetscapes, commercial developments, master planning, and centralized irrigation control system designs and feasibility studies. He is an industry leader in the design of state-of-the-art, LEED-oriented, water-conserving irrigation systems.

Jason brings 9 years of modern professional landscapearchitecture design and extensive technical knowledge toevery project. He has had key roles in notable Bay Areaprojects and he has collaborated in all project design phases,from programming through construction administration.Jason’s design and documentation experience encompassesresidential, commercial, civic, and educational projects. He isa leader in computer landscape architectural designapplications.

MILL VALLEY COMMUNITY CENTER AND RECREATIONAL FACILITIES MILL VALLEY, CALIFORNIA The Mill Valley Community Center facilities include a two-story community center building, school, a swimming pool,ball fields, and athletic facilities. The landscape architecturalservices for this joint use facility, a 25-acre site includeddesigning multi-use recreational areas, with two baseballdiamonds and soccer fields, six basketball courts, a rollerhockey court, and social gathering areas integrated with anindoor/outdoor kid watch area. Additionally, SMITH+SMITHdesigned a playground for the Mill Valley Middle Schoollocated on the adjoining site. Other services included marshand bay-front park enhancements/ nature walk.SMITH+SMITH provided landscape architectural design layout,grading and drainage of planting areas, pedestrian pavementsdesign, planting and irrigation design, site furnishings, non-structural landscape elements, including steps, and ramps.

SANTA CLARA CRIME LAB SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA The Santa Clara Crime Lab is a 90,000 square foot high-security laboratory, which sits on a constrained urban site with secure parking, accessible parking, controlled public entrance, vehicle evidence bays and entrances, outdoor staff coffee area, and accessibility ramps. In addition to the Crime Lab, the project included site planning and landscape. Irrigation, and planting design for the adjoining area of the neighboring buildings, the Municipal Court Building and the Juvenile Detention Center. The Court area was redesigned to incorporate a side entrance, two outdoor staff coffee areas, and parking, while maintaining some of its preexisting landscape garden. The Juvenile Center’s parking was reconfigured with new trees added. Landscape features include street-facing alternating plantingstrips that pick up the building form, Asian-influenced plantcolor and material palette at the main entrance, LEED-ratedirrigation system design. Landscape-related security featuresincluded major approach to public entrance oriented awayfrom public traffic, strategically placed trees of reducedheight and open canopy, perimeter plinth wall with non-seating surface, low profile ground planting, and a 12’ buildingperimeter maintenance strip rated for heavy equipment.

SHINNYO-EN TEMPLE, REDWOOD CITY, CALIFORNIA SMITH+SMITH provided landscape architectural servicesincluding planting and irrigation for courtyards, lawn area,patio and view garden.

MONADNOCK BUILDING COURTYARD SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA The Monadnock Building is one of San Francisco’s mostprominent historic landmarks in the Renaissance/Baroquestyle architecture. SMITH+SMITH provide landscape designfor the buildings over-structure courtyard, which featuresdecorative granite paving, seat walls, an arbor with seasonalplants and dynamic sculptures.

AETNA SPRINGS PRESERVE NAPA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA The landscape design concept was a revitalization of thehistoric open, park-like Oak woodland setting, with theaddition of designed planting areas to articulate and definesemiprivate and private spaces that are adjacent to theexisting and proposed structures. The intimate golf clubhouse is sited on an Oak Woodland knoll. Historic siteartifacts included fieldstone, edged terraces and walls,pedestrian promenades, and archways, the pool house andpedestrian bridges. Indigenous Oak trees were planted toreestablish the woodland and canopy to create mottled shadeon the ground plane. SMITH+SMITH designed and graded theentry road to the clubhouse, which wound its way throughthe Oak grove.

HEWLETT PACKARD, CUPERTINO, CALIFORNIA This 120-acre site features corporate facilities and twocafeterias for Hewlett-Packard’s Cupertino Campus. Two newthree-story office buildings of 350,000 square feet includeoffice space, light assembly space and marketing facilities. SMITH+SMITH provided landscape design and planningservices for the office building, a parking lot and cafeteriaamenities. Outdoor eating spaces were added to existingcafeteria facilities to create intimate meeting areas foremployees to relax and converse. A fitness center andoutdoor recreation facility with basketball courts and sandvolleyball courts were also created.

WINDRIVER SYSTEMS, ALAMEDA, CALIFORNIA Located on a 22-acre site along the Oakland-Alamedaestuary, SMITH+SMITH developed land-use and masterplanning studies for a new company headquarters and alandscape design plan for a public park. Amenities included ashoreline trail and park with passive and active recreationalareas that is open to the public. The park features include acantilevered wharf with pedestrian walks, viewing courtyards,outdoor dining areas, and boating activities along a pier. Thesite design maximizes shoreline and Oakland Skyline viewsand waterside amenities. One of the special challenges of thisproject was meeting the Bay Area Conservation DistrictGuidelines for wetlands design and irrigation mitigation.

ALZA CORPORATION MOUNTAIN VIEW, CALIFORNIA The landscape architectural design included a new entrycourt and recreation facility. The goal was to make the siteinviting and visually appealing, and at the same time providecontrolled access to the buildings. The site plan created ahierarchy of outdoor spaces with an amphitheater, formal andinformal gardens, and terraces filled with unique artsculptures. Portions of the site’s flat topography weresculpted and modeled to create intriguing spaces that fosterrelaxation and recreation in the corporate landscape.

SHUTTERS ON THE BEACH SANTA MONICA, CALIFORNIA Shutters Beach Front Hotel is a 200-room luxury oceanfronthotel located in Santa Monica. The design scheme recalls thecolorful architecture characteristic of historic beach resortsand cottages on the Southern California Coast. Sited so thatall guest rooms have ocean exposure, the front of the hotelopens onto a public promenade from which there is directaccess to the area’s swimming beaches. SMITH+SMITH’s plans included elaborate sunning terraces,garden courtyards, a fountain, pedestrian walkways, a grandstairway entrance to the beach, and a new landscape plan forrevitalizing an existing beach front park. One of the special challenges of this waterfront project wasobtaining permits from both the City of Santa Monica and theCalifornia Coastal Commission. This hotel received the 1995 Golden Nugget Grand Award forBest Specialty Project.

THE FOUR SEASONS HUALALAI KAILUA-KONA, HAWAII SMITH+SMITH provided master planning, site planning andlandscape architectural design services for this luxury beachand golf resort on Hawaii’s south Kona-Kohala Coast. Thelandscape design incorporates native plant materials,indigenous lava walls, anchialine ponds and wetlands. Both,the architecture and the landscape reflect an indigenousHawaiian theme.

DANVILLE SENIOR HOUSING DANVILLE, CALIFORNIA The inviting Sycamore Place is a housing complex for seniorresidents. The cluster of homes creates a sheltered andsecluded atmosphere, while still being accessible fors seniors.The community environment is enhanced by the beautifulrose garden, community vegetable garden, and recreationallawn.

SAN FRANCISCO TOWERS, ADULT CARE SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA The San Francisco Towers complex on Van Ness Avenueprovides varying levels of health care for senior residents inseven separate buildings that range from nine to thirteenstories and cover a full city block. The complex contains 250condominium/ apartments and a 40-bed facility offeringskilled nursing and limited hospital care. The urban landscape design includes gardens at rooftop andstreet level as well as recreation and pool areas, interiorlobbies and an exterior forecourt. SMITH+SMITH’s servicesincluded schematic design, design development, constructiondocuments, and construction administration.

CECILIA PLACE SENIOR HOUSING TIBURON, CALIFORNIA A hillside of trees surrounds this 16-unit low-incomeresidential development in Tiburon, CA. Clustered dwellingscreate a sheltered and secluded atmosphere while providingaccessible accommodations for seniors. The main focus is onthe central garden and lawns, seating areas and ornamentalplantings that provide gathering places for residents.

HARBOR LOFTS SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA Harbor Lofts is a renovation of an existing two-story 150-yearold landmark warehouse located at 101 Harrison Street, nearthe Bay Bridge in San Francisco’s SOMA District. The projectprovides 42-live/work spaces that are organized around anew 4,500-s.f. common courtyard, creating an environmentwhere artists and craftspeople can meet and exchange ideas, The landscape design includes a courtyard garden, privaterear yards for ground-floor units, and street plantings.Durable plant materials reflect this project’s strong urbancharacter, while the use of varied textures and year-roundcolor creates the atmosphere of a private residential garden. P.C.B.C Gold Nugget Award- Best Renovated/Restored SingleProject.

ANCHORAGE AT MARINA BAY MILPITAS, CALIFORNIA This 11.4-acre, 270 town house residential community islocated along the Marina shore in Richmond. Thearchitectural site plan included design of the landscape openspaces and pedestrian walks.

GLASHAUS LOFTS EMERYVILLE, CALIFORNIA This 3.1-acre project incorporates 75 town homes and 60-footpodium building containing 70 condominiums. Part of thelandscape architectural services was constructing a greenway, which is part of a public open space

7TH AND KING STREET APARTMENTS SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA SMITH+SMITH provided landscape architectural services fromentitlements through construction administration phases ofwork. This high-density urban project provides affordable andmarket rate apartments, located South of Market Street in SanFrancisco. The project was certified for occupancy in April2008.

PARC METROPOLITAN MILPITAS, CALIFORNIA Parc Metropolitan Park, located in the City of Milpitas, isadjacent to The Great Mall of the Bay Area and is divided into3 separate parcels, each approximately greater than an acrein size. Each park acts as a public open space accessible to all.Combined, Park West, Middle Park, and East Park containboth programmed and unprogrammed space which include;seating areas and play structures, water fountains, pedestrianpavements and lawns, raised planters, arbors, picnic tablesand grilling areas, and public restrooms. Middle park is themost formal of all, with trees that guide the public to amanicured garden and recreational club house facility that isequipped with swimming pool, deck, and shade structures.

MONTE VISTA FAMILY HOUSING MILPITAS, CALIFORNIA Monte Vista Apartments, a project developed by BridgeHousing, provides 300-affordable and market-rateapartments for families on a 16-acre site. The communityfeatures two and three-story buildings which are clusteredaround open space areas that provide open space recreationareas for children and adults. Additional amenities include a 2,000 square foot communitypool and spa, a teen center, a children’s break out area andseveral sport courts. SMITH+SMITH’s landscape architecturalservices included schematic design through constructionadministration.

PLAZA DE SAN JOSE SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA Located in the San Jose’s East Valley, this shopping center consists of 191,500 square feet of retail space. The LandscapeArchitectural plan included improvements to existinginfrastructure, including pedestrian pavement and siteplanting.

THE GREEN ON PARK PLACE DUBLIN, CALIFORNIA The Green is a 27-acre distinctive, contemporary, community-oriented destination servicing greater Dublin tri-valley area.SMITH+SMITH provided landscape architectural services todesign a series of outdoor “rooms” and structures, arrangedin a curvilinear fashion. CONCORD PARKING GARAGE, CONCORD, CALIFORNIA SMITH+SMITH provided complete landscape architecturaldesign services for the 432-stall parking structure indowntown Concord. The design elements includeddecorative, colored concrete paving at the drive entrancesand street frontages, overhead arching trellis with floweringvines, benches, and lighting.

CAPITAL AVENUE FREEMONT, CALIFORNIA The goal of the Landscape Architectural Plan for CapitolAvenue was to create aesthetically rich, pedestrian-orienteddistrict, focused on the central plaza and surroundingesplanades.

JOHN GALLIVAN CENTER SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH The urban landscape architectural plan included design of open space over a parking structure. Open gardens were created for outdoor cafes and public art displays. The project covered two 10-acre blocks of Downtown Salt Lake City, and provided 1000 residential units, and over 1.5 million square feet of office and retail space.
