The USC Upstate

Track & Field Complex

Announced in 2008, the USC Up-

state cross country and track & field

programs will be the benefactors

of a large lead gift that will make a

track & field complex on-campus a

reality in the near future. To be lo-

cated on the Northern edge of the

Louis P. Howell Athletic Complex, di-

rectly behind the County University

Soccer Stadium, the complex will

give Upstate the opportunity to

serve as a host of several state,

regional and conference meets.

Milliken Research ParkLocated adjacent to the USC Upstate

campus, Milliken Research Park, has

become the de facto home to the

Spartans. One of the best venues

in collegiate cross country, Milliken

has hosted the 1995 NCAA Divi-sion II National Championships, the

NCAA South Region Championships

in 2004 and 2005, the 1999 National

Junior Olympic Cross Country Cham-pionships and the 2008 NJCAA Na-

tional Championships as well as the

annual Eye Opener Invitational, the

largest cross country race in South

Carolina.

Spartan Facilities

Palmetto Trail

Located right on the USC Upstate

campus, the Palmetto Trail has more

than six miles of trails in a wooded

forest on the banks of Lawson’s Fork

Creek. The Spartans use the trail on

light workout days.

There_is_a_distinct_split_between_the_USC_Upstate_cross_country_programs._While_the_men’s_team_returns_just_two_letterwinners_but_brings_in_a_highly-touted_re-cruiting_class,_the_women’s_team_brings_in_just_one_newcomer_(albeit_a_S.C._Re-gion_1-4A_champion)_to_go_with_an_experienced_group_that_features_five_of_the_fastest_20_runners_in_school_history.

Both_teams,_however,_do_have_one_thing_in_common_-_they_will_enter_the_2009_season_with_their_highest_expectations_since_USC_Upstate_resurrected_the_pro-grams_with_the_move_to_NCAA_Division_I_athletics_in_2007.

“Even_though_our_men’s_team_is_young,_we_have_a_strong_group_joining_us_this_season,”_said_Upstate_head_coach_Jimmy Stephens._“We_have_quality_leadership_on_this_team,_starting_with_Matt Henderson_and_I_feel_that_will_be_a_huge_asset_for_the_team_this_season._Our_women’s_team_is_very_strong_and_we_feel_confident_that_we_will_have_a_host_of_quality_performances_this_season.”

Men’s Cross Country PreviewEven_if_there_are_only_two_runners_set_to_return_to_the_USC_Upstate_men’s_cross_country_team_in_2009,_the_team_will_not_lack_for_leadership_with_the_presence_of_junior_Matt Henderson and_sophomore_James Jackson on_the_team.

“We_are_very_young,”_first-year_assistant_coach_Carson Blackwelder said,_“but_we_have_some_very_good_freshmen._Our_goal_is_to_be_in_the_top_four_at_the_confer-ence_meet._A_lot_of_seniors_left_the_conference_last_year,_so_it_could_be_really_up_in_the_air.”

Jackson_completed_one_of_the_best_freshman_seasons_in_school_history_in_2008,_as_the_Aiken_High_graduate_posted_the_best_time_ever_by_a_rookie_runner_at_USC_Upstate,_ finishing_ the_ A-Sun_ Championships_ in_ 26:28._The_ 30th-place_ finish_ at_the_meet_also_gave_Jackson_a_slot_on_the_A-Sun_All-Freshman_Team,_becoming_the_first_men’s_runner_in_school_history_to_earn_a_Division_I_honor._

“I_think_James_brings_a_lot_to_the_team,”_Blackwelder_said._“Our_1-6_order_is_going_to_change_a_lot,_but_James_has_been_there_before_and_he_has_that_college_experi-ence._He_can_help_the_other_guys_along_and_tell_them_about_racing_an_8k_instead_of_a_5k._I_think_he_is_going_to_help_quite_a_bit_in_steering_everybody_along.”

Henderson,_who_along_with_Jackson,_is_one_of_the_20_fastest_runners_in_school_history_ already,_ but_ more_ importantly,_ the_ Dorman_ High_ grad_ brings_ a_ steady_work_ethic_and_leadership_to_the_Spartans._That_work_ethic_has_paid_off_for_him,_as_ the_ four-time_ Academic_ All-A-Sun_ honoree_ dropped_ his_ best_ 8K_ time_ from_27:44_ as_ a_ freshman_ to_ 27:00_ as_ a_ sophomore._ His_ work_ ethic_ will_ continue_ to_drive_him_and_should_keep_him_in_the_top_half_of_Upstate’s_lineup_after_finishing_second_to_Jackson_for_Upstate_in_nearly_every_2008_race.

“Matt_ can_ show_ me_ what_ they’ve_ done_ in_ the_ past,_ where_ they’ve_ run,_ places_to_work_out,”_Blackwelder_said._“He’s_a_great_help_to_have_since_ I’m_new_to_the_campus._He_leads_by_example_with_James._They_both_sort_of_help_the_other_guys_along.”

Seven_newcomers_will_also_pepper_the_squad,_helping_to_infuse_the_team_with_some_of_the_most_athletic_runners_in_the_Division_I_era,_including_Pennsylvania_native_David Dennison,_Kenyan_Gilbert Kemboi_and_Florida_natives_Christian Ritacco and_Cameron Thomas._Other_newcomers_who_could_contribute_imme-diately_include_Riverside_High_grad_Zach Bowles_and_Hickory_Ridge_grad_Dustin Thomas.

Kemboi_arrives_from_Kenya_after_running_a_15:29_personal-best_in_the_5,000_me-ters._Dennison_wrapped_up_his_senior_year_by_finishing_second_in_the_3,200_me-ters_at_the_Mid-Penn_Championships_and_he_posted_a_16:22.41_time_in_the_5,000_meters_as_a_senior.

“Davey_looks_like_he_is_in_really_good_shape_and_is_ready_to_roll,”_Blackwelder_said._“I_wouldn’t_be_surprised_if_he_is_our_top_man_early_on._It’s_going_to_take_some_time_for_Gilbert_to_adjust,_but_he’ll_come_along_slowly_and_will_be_there_by_the_end_of_the_year.”

Ritacco_and_Cameron_Thomas_both_ran_high_school_cross_country_for_USC_Up-state_Athletic_Hall_of_Famer_Sherman_Eller_and_both_enter_his_alma_mater_looking_to_immediately_take_a_spot_in_the_top_five_on_the_team._

Ritacco_finished_seventh_at_the_4A_Florida_Cross_Country_Championships,_finish-ing_the_5k_run_with_a_personal-best_time_of_15:55._He_was_named_the_Northwest_Florida_Cross_Country_Athlete_of_the_Year_and_followed_that_by_finishing_second_in_the_3,200_meters_at_the_state_track_and_field_championships_in_the_spring.

Cameron_ Thomas_ followed_ closely_ behind_ Ritacco_ at_ the_ state_ cross_ country_meet,_finishing_11th_with_a_personal-best_time_of_16:02,_earning_a_selection_to_the_Footlocker_All-South_Senior_Team._

“Christian_ and_ Cameron_ are_ very_ competitive,”_ Blackwelder_ said._“They_ like_ to_compete_against_each_other_and_they_are_going_to_add_a_ lot_to_the_team_over_the_next_four_years.”

Women’s Cross Country PreviewWhile_the_story_of_the_men’s_team_may_be_youth,_experience_will_be_the_key_ingra-dient_on_the_women’s_squad,_as_it_returns_five_letterwinners_in_2009,_all_of_whom_are_rated_amongst_the_top_10_fastest_ in_school_history._Once_again,_a_group_of_four_Kenyans_will_lead_the_team,_but_a_group_of_four_South_Carolinians_will_give_the_team_some_much-needed_added_depth.

“The_ladies_that_came_from_Kenya,_you_could_tell_that_it_took_them_some_time_to_adjust,”_Blackwelder_said,_“but_by_the_time_track_came_around_they_were_running_the_5k_in_the_17-minute_range._Our_top_four_is_very_solid_and Lauren Walker is_a_solid_fifth_runner._We_don’t_have_as_much_depth_as_we’d_like_but_Laura Transue and_Mary Alexander have_both_run_around_20:00_in_the_5k_and_will_give_us_a_good_six_and_seventh_runner._Our_goal_is_to_win_the_conference_championships_and_have_a_bunch_of_all-conference_finishes.”

Junior_Emily Tangwar will_once_again_lead_the_way_for_the_Spartans._The_fastest_runner_in_school_history,_Tangwar_has_won_two_races,_including_the_25th_Annual_Eye_Opener_ in_2008,_and_run_the_top_nine_times_ in_school_history,_ including_a_school-record_18:08_as_a_ freshman._The_Spartan_ junior_has_also_won_ four_ indi-vudual_A-Sun_titles_in_track_and_field.

“I_ think_ having_ the_ other_ girls_ here_ has_ helped_ Emily_ become_ a_ leader,”_ Black-welder_said._“They_are_all_very_reserved,_very_polite,_very_quiet._ I_guess_here_ in_America,_you_don’t_see_that_as_much._She_stepped_up_a_little_bit_to_show_every-one_around_and_I_guess_with_having_the_three_girls_come_in_last_year,_she_needed_to_take_that_role.”

Sophomore_Jemali Sang leads_a_pack_of_four_sophomores_who_burst_onto_the_scene_in_2008_and_helped_Upstate_beat_more_than_60_percent_of_the_teams_it_lined_

Sophomore_ Carolyne Chelulei also_ returns_ to_ the_ Spartans_ after_ a_ freshman_campaign_that_saw_her_finish_in_the_top_25_in_three_races._Chelulei_will_try_to_best_her_top_time_of_18:52,_which_is_11th-best_in_school_history._Chelulei_helped_the_Spartans_earn_points_in_both_the_1,500_and_5,000-meter_runs_at_the_A-Sun_track_and_field_championships.

Sophomore_Joan Tangwar,_Emily’s_younger_sister,_struggled_with_injuries_during_the_2008_season_but_will_look_to_become_a_major_factor_on_the_2009_squad._After_placing_third_in_the_1,500_and_fourth_in_the_800_meters_at_the_A-Sun_track_and_field_championships,_Tangwar_will_look_to_build_on_that_success._As_it_is,_her_best_cross_country_time_of_20:02.30_places_her_as_seventh-fastest_in_school_history.

“They’re_always_together,_live_together,_work_together,”_Blackwelder_said_of_the_Kenyan_athletes._“A_lot_of_them_have_the_same_classes._They_are_very_good_stu-dents_and_they_are_very_serious_about_everything._They_tell_me_they_are_here_to_run,_go_to_school_and_that’s_about_it._They_are_the_perfect_athletes._It’s_interesting_that_they_are_such_good_athletes,_but_that_they_are_willing_to_follow_and_listen.”

Building_ from_ the_ ground_ up,_Jimmy_ Stephens_ has_ helped_make_the_USC_Upstate_track_and_field_and_cross_country_programs_become_a_contender_in_the_Atlan-tic_ Sun_ Conference_ in_ just_ three_years_of_competition.

Hired_ in_ 2007_ to_ revive_ a_ dor-mant_cross_country_program_and_to_ launch_ the_ school’s_ first_ var-sity_track_and_field_program,_Ste-phens,_ now_ in_ his_ fourth_ year_ at_Upstate,_has_shown_the_ability_to_get_ the_ most_ out_ of_ his_ athletes,_already_ having_ coached_ seven_conference_ champions_ in_ two_years_in_the_A-Sun.

The_ 2008_ cross_ country_ team_produced_a_host_of_Upstate_firsts,_including_ the_ school’s_ first_ Eye_Opener_ medalist_ in_ Emily_ Tang-war_ and_ the_ first_ men’s_ A-Sun_award_ winner,_ as_ James_ Jackson_was_ named_ to_ the_ All-Freshman_team._ Jemali_ Sang_ earned_ wom-en’s_ All-Freshman_ honors_ and_

both_teams_improved_at_the_A-Sun_Cross_Country_Championships._The_men’s_team_jumped_two_slots_to_eighth_and_the_women_moved_four_spots_to_seventh.

In_the_winter,_the_Spartan_men’s_track_and_field_team_posted_a_remarkable_jump_from_sixth_to_fourth_at_the_conference_championships_and_were_led_by_pole_vaulter_Justin_Crawford,_who_posted_the__first_conference_title_in_the_men’s_programs_history._On_the_women’s_side,_Emily_Tangwar_won_the_5,000_meters_for_her_fourth_A-Sun_Indoor_title.

First-Class Athletes

While technically, the USC Upstate cross country team’s home course is “off-campus,” it is no more than a short run to the Milliken Research Park. Adjacent to the campus of USC Upstate, the Mil-liken Center is one of the most prestigous cross country courses in the nation. In 2008 alone, the headquarters of Milliken & Company hosted the 2008 NJCAA National Championships, the 25th Annual Eye Opener (the largest cross country race in South Carolina) and the Southern Conference Championships.

First-Class Students

In just its third year as a member of the Atlantic Sun Confer-ence, the USC Upstate Cross Country team has quickly gained momentum in the conference and the competitive Southern region. On the course, Coach Jimmy Stephens’ harriers have:

• Earned three A-Sun All-Freshman honors.• Won two individual women’s race titles.• Earned one all-conference honor.• Improved on both the men’s and women’s side from 2007 to

2008 at the A-Sun Championships.

In the classroom, the Spartan cross country teams have made a significant impact. In just two years, the teams have established themselves as one of the top athletic programs academically at the school. Among a host of honors, here are some highlights among the Spartans’ academic resumes:

• 24 Academic All-Atlantic Sun selections• 8 Women’s Academic All-A-Sun selections in both 2007 and

2008.• 4 perfect 4.0 GPAs for a semester during the 2008-09 aca-

demic year.• An athletic program-record Team GPA of 3.536 by the wom-

en’s team in the spring of 2009.

First-Class Experience

The experience of being a Division I student-athlete is unlike any other. For the USC Upstate Cross Country programs, this is especially true. In the past two seasons, the Spartans have competed in several historical American cities like Charleston, S.C., Charlotte, N.C. and Nashville, Tenn. This year, the team will also compete in De Land, Fla., not far from both Disney World in Orlando or Daytona Beach.

Besides the travel, the Spartans also host the Eye Opener, South Carolina’s larg-est cross country race. In 2008 for the 25th anniversary of the race, 1964 Olympic champion Billy Mills was on hand to speak at a pre-meet past dinner.

Emily Tangwar became the first Spartan to win a race in the DI era, taking the title at Upstate’s own

Eye Opener.

Freshman Jemali Sang earned A-Sun All-Freshman honors after finishing 22nd at the A-Sun meet.

Freshman James Jackson earned Freshman All-A-Sun honors after taking 30th at the A-Sun meet.

The_ USC_ Upstate_ cross_ country_ program_ crossed_many_new_milestones_and_accomplishments_in_the_2008_season,_only_their_second_year_in_Division_I_as_part_of_the_Atlantic_Sun_Conference._With_the_addi-tion_of_six_newcomers_to_the_Spartan_squads,_both_teams_ improved_ upon_ last_ year’s_ conference_ fin-ishes,_as_the_women_finished_seventh_and_the_men_finished_eighth_at_the_championships.

From_an_individual_first-place_finish,_two_Runner_of_the_Week_awards,_a_team-best_ fourth-place_perfor-mance,_ two_ A-Sun_ All-Freshman_ athletes,_ and_ vast_improvement_from_last_year’s_teams,_the_cross_coun-try_teams_experienced_an_encouraging_season_and_laid_the_foundation_for_a_strong_future_ahead.___

“I’m_ very_ proud_ of_ our_ cross_ country_ program_ and_our_rapid_improvement_under_coach_Schlichter,”_Up-state_ head_ coach_ Jimmy_ Stephens_ said._“Our_ team_came_a_long_way_this_year._For_the_women,_our_top_five_runners_consisted_of_one_sophomore_and_four_freshmen,_ which_ makes_ for_ a_ very_ exciting_ future_that_I_look_forward_to_watching_unfold.”

The_women’s_team_set_the_pace_for_years_to_come,_boasting_a_young_squad_peppered_with_ freshmen._Three_of_the_top_five_consistent_finishers_for_the_Up-state_ women_ were_ freshmen,_ including_ Carolyne_Chelulei,_Jemeli_Sang,_and_Lauren_Walker._Freshman_Joan_Tangwar_ and_ sophomore_ Nicole_Yancey_ both_also_earned_top-five_spots_on_several_occasions.

The_women_boasted_a_talented_squad,_finishing_as_high_as_fourth_of_24_teams_at_the_Mercer_Invitational_on_Sept._27._They_also_finished_fifth_(of_18)_at_the_Fur-man_Invitational,_and_sixth_(of_12)_at_the_Eye_Opener._All_the_women_improved_upon_their_times_from_early_in_the_season,_with_many_setting_their_personal_best_times_at_the_conference_championships_on_Nov._1._

Emily_ Tangwar,_ last_ year’s_ A-Sun_ Freshman_ of_ the_year,_ finished_ first_ amongst_ the_ Spartans_ in_ five_ of_the_seven_races,_including_taking_the_individual_title_at_the_Eye_Opener_Invitational_among_311_collegiate_women._Tangwar_earned_Runner_of_the_Week_hon-ors_ on_ two_ occasions_ throughout_ the_ season._ She_also_ earned_ first-,_ second-,_ third-_ and_ fourth-place_individual_ finishes_ throughout_ the_ season,_ boast-ing_her_best_times_at_the_Blue_Ridge_Open_and_Eye_Opener_with_18:20_and_18:26,_respectively._

The_ consistent_ finisher_ behind_Tangwar_ was_ fresh-man_ Jemeli_ Sang,_ who_ finished_ second_ for_ the_Spartans_in_each_meet_leading_to_conference_cham-pionships._ She_ was_ named_ to_ the_ conference_ All-Freshman_Team_after_finishing_first_for_the_Spartans_and_ 22nd_ overall_ at_ the_ A-Sun_ Championships_ in_19:04._She_posted_her_personal_best_time_of_the_sea-son_at_the_Mercer_Invitational_with_an_18:51_finish._

Though_ the_ men_ didn’t_ have_ the_ same_ depth_ that_ the_women_ showed_ throughout_ the_ season,_ they_ did_ illus-trate_ convincing_ improvement,_ which_ was_ heightened_by_ freshman_ James_ Jackson._ The_ men’s_ team_ finished_eighth_ of_ 11_ teams_ at_ conference_ championships,_ two_spots_better_than_last_year’s_finish._

Jackson_ topped_ the_ men’s_ team_ in_ each_ meet_ of_ the_season,_garnering_his_best_time_at_the_A-Sun_Champion-ships,_where_he_finished_30th_overall_ in_26:28,_a_perfor-mance_that_earned_him_All-Freshman_honors._The_Aiken,_S.C.,_native_finished_27th_at_ the_Furman_ Invitational_on_Oct._11,_and_30th_at_the_Mercer_Invitational,_helping_the_men_to_a_12th-place_finish_of_22_teams._

Conrad_ Goeringer,_ another_ returner_ from_ last_ year’s_squad,_came_back_strong_in_the_2008_cross_country_sea-son_with_more_confidence_and_experience._He_finished_third_ for_ the_ Spartans_ and_ 50th_ overall_ at_ conference_championships_with_a_27:52_finish._He_broke_28_minutes_for_the_first_time_of_the_season_and_posted_his_best_time_at_the_Winthrop_Invitational_in_27:25,_helping_the_team_to_a_ninth-place_finish_of_14_teams._Goeringer_also_posted_a_48th-place_finish_at_the_Furman_Invitational_on_Oct._11._
