    Volume 10 Number 36

Increasing Your Quantity TimeBy Joe Lightfoot, Pastor of Adult Ministries

In todays structured world, just hanging

out is gold. Ask children what they want, and

they will tell you they want to just hang out

    with their parents.

These words from Terry Real, a marriage and

family therapist and author, tell us a lot about

our relationships with othersand with God.In his January 19th article, of theHuffington

Post, Real contends that : Quality time is noth-

ing more than a self-serving yuppie rationalization for not being

there for your kids. The fairy tale of quality time is that you

can make up for the time you dont have to be a good mom or dad

by scheduling short doses of time intentionally focused on your

kid. The entire idea is a fallacy.

He goes on to say that real parenting interaction occurs in

the midst of the normal daily routine of activity. Real contends

that, Kids, if you let them, will pull you into their slower, more

    nourishing kid-time.

This noted counselor also advises, You have to yield to their

world which is simpler, less stimulating and slower and open upto the subtle richness of it. The reward is that when you enter into

that relationship with your kids its so much fun and so nourish-

    ing for you.

This is outstanding parenting advice! It is also wonderful

    spiritual counsel!

God clearly expresses His desire to spend quantity time with

us. In the first letter to the church in Thessalonica we are ex-

horted to pray without ceasing. God

says a way to deepen your relationship

with Him is to be in continual

    conversation with Him.

As we indicated last week, Godcommunicates to us through the

Bible. This is a tremendous re-

source to help you understand who

God is. To continue to grow in your relationship with Him, you

must spend time with Him. The Westminster Shorter Catechism

provides some help in understanding the reason for this. It tells us

that our chief aim is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.

A great way to do thisin conjunction with othersis

to take part in our Wednesday night prayer community. This

group gathers 6:308:00, in room 1244 for a rich time of prayer

and mutual encouragement.Another way to deepen your relationship with God is by

spending the next 30 days praying for specific needs of First

Federated Church. A 30-Day Prayer Guide will be handed out

during the worship service Sunday morning. Well also have

copies available in the display racks at each of the main entrances

    next week.

God invites you to develop the practice of in everything

    by prayer and petition with

    thanksgiving letting

    your requests be made

    known to God. As

    you do this, God

    will pull you intowhat relational

    expert Terry Real

    could refer to

    as His slower,

    more nourishing

    God-time.

    VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Choir Needed For Easter!By Michael Howland, Pastor of Youth Ministries, Worship Leader

We are excited to be working on a special

service for Easter Sunday. We welcome allsingers high school age and up! We need you

to join us as we put together a choral program

for this event. We were so blessed to add Beth

and Travis Wilkins and their expertise in

choir directing during the Christmas season.

They, along with worship team member, Scott

Johnson, are willing to lead for this endeavor as

well. We are looking for a choir between 30-50

members in size, and we need you to make that a reality!

    The style of music will

    be more formal, reflective

    and moving. We will utilize

the Wilkinses to help us run

    sectionals, learn our parts,

    and give us direction. The

    choir will sing from folders

and music will not need to

    be memorized. This worship

    experience will include

    choral selections, songs

    from a praise ensemble and

    congregational singing. There

will also be a narrator to tie

    everything together. Would

you begin to pray for thiseffort? Would you pray about your own involvement, and would

you also help us to recruit all those who can sing to join us? A

table with more information (including rehearsal schedules) will

be in the main foyer after worship service today. You can also

email Deb Boscaljon at [email protected] with any

questions that you may have. Please check the box on the Care

& Communication Card if you are indeed interested in joining

the choir. Rehearsals will likely be on Wednesdays and select

Sundays. We continue to be excited about what God is doing in

this body and look forward to see how He will bring this special

    service together.

    Mission Aviation Fellowship

    Location: Quito, Ecuador

What do they do? As a mis-

    sionary pilot/mechanic, Danprovides safe transportation

    for missionaries, Christian

workers and patients in rain forest areas where there is no

other means of transportation. The Rogerses have served in

Suriname, Haiti, Honduras and now again in Ecuador where

Dan is Chief of Maintenance. Sylvia, a gifted musician,

    teaches music and provides hospitality.

    Prayer Requests:

Ask for future direction for Lori who has arrived safely in

Spain to study at a small Bible college.

Healing for Heidi who broke her leg when a horse slipped

and fell on her. She teaches riding in the US. For the MAF-Ecuador ministry. Operators permits have

only been issued for Ecuadorian pilots since early December

    Pray for permission to fly.

Safety for Dan and Sylvia as they go to Haiti to help in

MAFs flying there for 3-4 weeks.

For wisdom as to how to proceed. They plan furlough in

September but may have to move it up to March if they aren

    flying in Ecuador.

    Je & MelissaClosed Country

What do they do? Jeff & Melissa serve in a restricted accessnation, both serving as English teachers at their host univer-

sity. They focus on the 30,000 students in their town. Their

vision is to see a group of national teachers and students

meeting together regularly for worship and reaching out to

others in ministry. They seek to identify students with spiri-

    tual interest.

    Praises:

Thirty+ students gave a great performance at the annual

Christmas program; an audience of 300+ gathered to see the

    program.

The program strengthened relationships among the Christian

students and some seekers took a step nearer to God.

    Prayer Requests:

Staff members were recently told that students are not al-

lowed to take part in church activities. Will the policy be

enforced? Ask God to protect the student fellowship and that

students would not be intimidated by their teachers threats

    or negative comments.

For a spiritual breakthrough among the faculty and staff.

(Some struggle with doubts, others feel the cost of following

Christ in their society is too great.)

For three recently married Christian couples.

MISSION ONE Reaching others for Jesus ChristFocus On: Dar Hamid of SudanLanguage: Sudanese Arabic

    Trade Language: Arabic

    Population: 695,000

The Dar Hamid are a confederation of about nineteen tribes

and some sub-groups that share a common culture and are ledby a single chief. This group has a population of about 695,000

nomadic people who live in Northern Sudan.

Traditionally, the Dar Hamid are Sunni Muslims. However,

as a rule, most are not religious and know very little about the

Islamic religion. Very few can read or write, and the written word

is actually considered a source of magical power.

The Dar Hamid raise all types of livestock and trade them

for essential living supplies. The men tend to the herds and the

women to the households and small gardens. They have very

complex systems of migration as nomads and, because the desert

is very dangerous, all of the men carry sheathed daggers. Some

carry swords, but all carry shotguns or rifles in order to protect

themselves from bandits.Quoted from CALLED TO PRAY: Frontiers Guide to Praying for the Unengaged.

    Paul & Cheryl NyquistMission Board:

    Avant Ministries

    Location:

    Kansas City, Missouri

What do they do? Our former

    FFC Senior Pastor, Dr.

    J. Paul Nyquist, assumed

    the presidency of Avant

Ministries (formerly GospelMissionary Union) in 2001. His responsibilities include

building, training and motivating the organization to develop

the church where it does not exist. The ministry trains and

deploys Short-Cycle Church Planting teams and develops

    strategic partnerships with churches.

    Praises:

Thanks to generosity in 2008, they met all three of their

matching grants, benefiting ministries in West Africa,

    Europe and North America.

Team Czech-Prague started their Short-Cycle Church Plant-

    ing strategy Jan. 1.

Prayer Requests: For Team Czech-Prague as they find permanent housing,

enroll their children in local schools and start to initiate

    ministries in their neighborhoods.

For their recruitment team as they connect with people who

are excited about participating in the work God is doing at

    Avant.

For the future plans of missionary candidates who came for

the candidate orientation program last week.

KZ ChurchIts day three for all of our AGENTS IN

ACTION! Today we learned how telling

lies can cause lots of trouble for us and for

others around us. However, when we are

honest, people know that they can counton us. Gods Word in Matthew 19:18 says,

Do not steal, do not give false testimony.

Parents, ask your children how smelly

goat skins and a good meal got Jacob into

really big trouble with his brother and his dad.

    CHILDRENS MINISTRY

AWANALast Wednesday night our AWANA kids chose a few specialpeople to be the recipients of tasty pies. It was all good, clean (orshould we say MESSY!?) fun for the kids and their good-naturedleaders. Now, dont you wish you were an AWANA leader??

It may be cold outside, but its not too early to think

    about summer camp. Just imagine

the great timesswimming in the lake,

singing around a campfire, meeting new friends,

learning more about the God who created and loves you! Early
