Situated on the coast in the south east of England and steeped in history, Collins and Hayes has been successfully designing, developing and manufacturing upholstered furniture, of the highestquality, for over 130 years.

Skilled craftsmanship, combined with both traditional and modern techniques, means that we at Collins and Hayes can proudly offeryou a bespoke service with several unique benefits.

Our upholstery is individually handmade to meet our customers specific requirements, as well as our own. Our wealth of knowledge and well established reputation ensures a deep understanding of the materials and skills required, which culminates in beautifully designed and crafted furniture.

Attention to detail is essential at Collins and Hayes. Our large collection of fabrics and leathers are specifically selected andsourced from all over the world in order to enhance and complement our furniture. Colour, tone and texture are important factors and we are constantly researching so that we canupdate our lavish collection of fabrics, which are perfectly suited totoday’s contemporary lifestyles. However, should you discover your own fabric, we can use this to create your very ownunique piece of furniture using our Customer’s Own Material service. Our furniture is designed to look stylish and engineered forcomfort. Comfort is particular to each individual and, for that reason, we offer a selection of seat cushion interiors – foam with apolyester fibre wrap, foam with a feather wrap, feather or polyesterfibre. Our back cushions, pillow cushions and scatter cushions arefeather-filled as standard.

Our products are designed not only to look appealing but also to ensure ease of delivery. Thanks to our methods of construction, weare able to deliver to the most difficult and inaccessible places asall our models can be delivered disassembled for assembly in thehome.This flexible approach extends to a ‘custom fit’ service. Should yourequire your sofa to fit a specific space we can tailor its width tosuit. In the back of this brochure we show the possibilities.

Comfort and durability are essential and to this end, all of our furniture designs are archived, which means that nothing is discontinued. So, should you wish to add to, refresh or replaceyour favourite furniture - you can.

Our sofabeds are a great space saving remedyoffering an easy and convenient solution when

friends and family come to stay.

A comfortable sprung mattress and slatted pull-out mechanism allow a restful and

The sizes listed here are our standard dimensionshowever, should you wish your sofa to fit a specific space we can tailor its width to suit your requirements. We can increase or decrease the widthof our sofas in units of 5 centimetres, however thisdoes not apply to sofa beds.

As mentioned in the technical specifications our designs are supplied with standard seat cushion interiors, fibre fill, foam with a fibre wrap, foam witha feather wrap or feather. Should you wish to changethe standard seat cushion interiors you can choosefrom any of these four options in order to create yourown individual sofa. All our back and scatter cushions are feather filled.Please be aware that you can order scatter cushionsin any of our fabrics to make more of a feature ofyour furniture.

We also offer a Customer’s Own Material service so you can create your very own unique piece of furniture with your very own fabric. In these instances we can also advise you on fabric suitability with regard to upholstered furniture.Archived designs are available only with the current fabric range or customer's own material.

To ease delivery even to the most difficult or inaccessible places all of our models can be delivered disassembled, for assembly in the home.

Loose cover furniture is supplied on castors as standard but glides are an available option.

Cleaning - Regular Maintenance

Dust settles on your upholstery and can not onlyspoil the look and colour of the fabric, but can alsoaccelerate wear and tear as it contains abrasive and gritty particles which can cut and breakdown fibres.

Care should be taken not to use high pressure vacuum cleaner when cleaning feather filled cushions. There is the possibility that feathers couldbe pulled through the cover.

Particular care and consideration should be given todelicate and specialised fabrics.

Spot Cleaning

Accidents happen and all stains and spills should bedealt with quickly (with the exception of mud, whichshould be left to dry and then lightly brushed off). Soak up any spills as soon as possible using a cleanwhite cloth or white kitchen paper.

Please check that your fabric is washable, or requires a specialist cleaner, before taking any further

action. This can be confirmed by telephoningyour retailer who shouldbe able to supply youwith all the necessary information and guidance.This brief telephone callmay save a lot of expenseand disappointment.

Remove any solids with aspoon or a blunt knife,taking care not to spreadthe stain.

Carefully dab the areawith cold water, takingcare not to rub the fabricas this may cause thecolour to fade.

To treat oily stains, use a proprietary cleaning fluid.However we would suggest that before using a cleaning fluid that you always read the makers instructions and do a test on a hidden area of fabricto ensure that it has no adverse effects, as somecleaning fluids can alter the colour or dye in certainfabrics.

Specialist Cleaning - Fixed Cover Furniture

We would recommend that the cleaning of yourCollins and Hayes furniture is best left to a specialist cleaning company. It is important thatcleaning is done before dirt or soiling becomes tooingrained. We would advise that the cleaning is carried out on the piece in its entirety. Do not take

cushions to be dry cleaned separately as this couldresult in a mismatch of colours.

Safeclean is a specialist cleaning company and canbe contacted on: www.safeclean.co.uk. They will be able to direct you to their closest representative.

Leather

At Collins and Hayes we pride ourselves on manufacturing upholstered furniture of the highestquality, we only select superior materials in order toachieve these standards.

Leather is a natural product and is available in manydifferent qualities and finishes; each hide is uniqueand will have its own individual characteristics. Therewill always be differences in grain, texture andcolour from one hide to the next and even within thesame hide.

Natural markings such as neck and belly wrinkles,growth marks, healed scars and insect bites are common and are proof of the natural product and setit apart from man-made imitations; to obscure themall from view would destroy the natural beauty andsoftness of the hide.

It is essential to accept that these natural character istics will be an integral part of the hide and therefore part of your leather furniture.

Our highly skilled craftsmen carefully tailor hides toenhance the full beauty and character of the leatherand therefore the finished upholstered product.

Aniline leather

Aniline leather is a natural product that has a particular appearance. It has an exceptional touchand special warmth that does not come with lowerquality pigment dyed leathers.Aniline dye is transparent; it enhances the natural appearance and unique features of the individualhide. Each hide absorbs the dye differently thus allowing it to retain its distinctive character.

Only the finest hides are selected for anilinetreatment; a process that creates outstanding andbeautiful results.

Semi-Aniline Leather

Semi-aniline leather is very similar to aniline leatherand shares a few of the characteristics.Semi-aniline leathers are treated with a light coating,which contains a small amount of pigment. This ensures a consistent colour, makes it more resistant toscratches and also gives an element of stain resistance.

Semi-aniline leather is more durable than anilineleather whilst still retaining a natural appearance. Adistressed look will still be achieved with this leatherover time and whilst it is slightly less absorbent thananiline leather, any spills or stains must be dealt withimmediately.

Caring for leather upholstery

Our aniline leather has been treated with a lightleather protector to help give some protection againststains and scratches. This however will not protect itfrom the effects of sunlight. Leaving leather furniturein sunlight will bleach it and if left in direct sunlightor in excessive heat for prolonged periods the naturalmoistures present in leather will evaporate, theleather will fade, dry out and eventually crack.

Leather furniture does require some maintenance. It should be dusted on a regular basis; any light scratches can be removed by rubbing carefully with aslightly damp, soft clean cloth or chamois. To avoiddiscolouration it is essential to rub very gently.

If something is spilt it is important to act immediately. Soak up any surplus liquid with cleanwhite kitchen paper, then gently dab with a newpiece of kitchen paper being careful not to spread theremaining liquid. Allow the leather to dry naturally.

Lighter shades of leather in particular will require increased maintenance in order to prevent discolouration from constant handling, dye transfer

from clothes and atmospheric dust.

Be aware that skin and hair products may cause irreversible damage to the leather’s surface especiallyin high contact areas.

Never use any cleaning solvents, oils, wax polish,saddle soap, furniture polish or general-purpose stainremovers on aniline leather.

For all types of stain it is important to wipe with thedamp cloth from the outer edge of the stain towardsthe centre to prevent cleaning rings.

The cleaning processes mentioned here will not affect the oil and water repellence of the treatedleather.

Loose covers

Our loose cover furniture provides a perfect combination for those who seek elegance and practicality.

Whilst the construction of our loose cover furniture is identical to our tight cover product, theoverall appearance will differ due to the removablecovers.

Removing loose covers is straightforward:

Firstly remove the cushion interiors from their cases,being careful not to damage the zip. Remove upholstery pins if they have been used onthe underside of the arms and backs. Gently lift thefabric over one arm and then the other; the base canthen be removed.

To replace the covers follow this procedure in reverse.

When fabrics are cleaned, there may be a slight lossof colour. We therefore advise that all items from a piece of furniture (if possible the entire group) are cleaned atthe same time so that they continue to match eachother. Cleaning items individually is of course possible but may result in colour differing from therest of the furniture.

It is essential that you check whether the fabric thatyou have selected is washable, dry clean only or requires a specialist cleaner.

Washable fabrics will have been pre-shrunk in thefinishing process but it is still important not to exceed the recommended temperature as higher temperatures could lead to further shrinkage.

Please wash covers separately from other articles anduse mild washing detergents, that do not contain Optical Brightening Agents. these could dramaticallyalter the colour of the material and must be avoided.The product Persil Silk and Wool is suggested as amilder agent.

We recommend that the covers are hung up and allowed to dry naturally rather than tumble dried inorder to avoid possible shrinkage. Please do not dryin direct sunlight or close to direct sources of heat.

Do not replace loose covers if they are still wet asthis could damage other components of your furniture.

Let the covers settle on the furniture for a day or so.Ironing should not be necessary but if it is required,iron the covers on the furniture over a damp cloth.

Machine washable fabrics can also be dry cleaned.Please advise your dry cleaner of the composition ofthe fabric.

Alcantara

Alcantara is a soft durable faux suede. It is simple tokeep clean only requiring mild soap and water. Inorder to keep your furniture looking new simply wipeit over periodically with a damp cloth then give it asoft brushing.

Removable covers can be machine washed at 30°.Once washed, allow to dry naturally, replace andsoftly brush the covers to restore its natural lustre.

Do not use any solvents on Alcantara and avoid direct contact with steam appliances.

Under no circumstances should Alcantara be drycleaned.

Wooden Feet and arms

Please appreciate that all our wooden products aremade from a high quality natural timber. Natural timber will display small colour variationswhich have to be accepted as a feature of purchasing a product of this quality.

Castors

We recommend that you check the condition of yourcastor feet on a regular basis. This action is suggestedon the basis that a damaged or faulty castor coulddirty or damage both wooden and carpeted floors.

Cushion interior care

We select only the highest grades of filling materialsfor our cushions. However, after constant use, it maybe found that your cushion will show signs of compression.

For this reason it is recommended that the cushions are “plumped” on a regular basis in order tomaintain loft and appearance. It is also recommended that cushions are turned and alternated on a regular basis in order to minimisewear and tear.
