5OY 3—Whana WhanaWhanawhana loosely translated means "give me all that you have, give me all that you

have”, and that was appropriate for a lot of the orienteers out there, as Whanawhana, Got tagotta.Firstly I would like to thank Geoffrey for his tremendous input. Initially I had the red long

course shaped like a giant cricket pitch but thanks to Geoff we changed it to being a lot morecompact without losing distance or too much height and eventually it looked like a giant MickeyMouse head which was also appropriate as a lot of the runners thought some of the control positionswere a bit Mickey Mouse. One shared red med/red long leg was particularly under immensescrutiny as times varied from 1m38s to 24m31s which is quite considerable for 125 metre leg. Iwould like to give my condolences to the families of those still out there.

I was particularly happy with the white and red short courses. I liked the variations wemanaged to obtain for the whites, with the use of tape only once. I would estimate that 80% ofthem crossed the creek at the start instead of following it around and I did see one of the girlstearing up the hill at the start, chasing a red long runner, and another couple of lads making theirway to the finish via the start. As there weren't any DNFs I assume they got the lot. The red shorthad 3 uphill controls to start with and the rest was either across or down. This was achieved withoutcompromise to variation of landscape or technical difficulty. Due to the spe- cious nature of thelandscape there were some big name MPs (not the Tariana Turia type MPs) on the red short course.I think Ken finally found the elusive 3rd control 2nd time out there.

Because some clown complained about the onga onga at Smedley ( the nearest town iseven called Onga Onga for chrissakes) the Orienteers Course Setters Guild decided that thenasty little shrub should be eliminated from red short courses, which unfortunately meant Ispent a day out there chopping out the infringing culprits. It’s a funny feeling when you runafter being stung on the calf about 30 times; it feels like the muscle has separated from thebone. No other complaints about the onga onga were heard, so it was all worthwhile.

The orange and yellow courses had the most contestants. The winning times were moreakin to a short course event whereas the mean times for both around the 42 min mark were spoton what you'd expect for middle distance; maybe there are a few trying to burgle some cups inthese grades this year.

I'm not going to thank Dave Fisher for fixing up all the computer results that went awryon the day, nor for helping tidy up the caravan after nearly all had gone but I am going to for- givehim for my electrocution at The Slump.

A note for setters in the future; if you have to take the caravan 45 minutes to the event addon an extra one and half hours if you forget the caravan key. When we eventually put out half thecontrols we returned to the caravan only to hear a shotgun go off. Next thing a couple of farmersdrove up to us and threw us two phat feasants. We finished putting out the controls and returnedto the caravan, when again we heard shotgun shots , three reports this time. Along came the samefarmers and threw us another five pheasants, that was seven birds in four shots, as the boot wasgetting full we headed home. Next day I overheard Geoff saying, "We had a really good day anda pheasant plucking night too".

Geoff did do the ultimate sacrifice to protect some gear. Whilst collecting controls heslipped down a bank, with the e-bases in the vest, a vice like grip on the control flags in onehand and the controls standards in the other, he was horrified to see an enormous onga ongabush waiting to break his fall. Quick thinking (???) Geoff thought he would protect his newshoes from being ravaged by this bush and spread his legs only to take an onga onga to the

groin. Left straddling this bush he eventually managed to work himself free but did give a newmeaning to walking with a limp...

A special thanks to Bill Beamish for the use of his farm, turning off the electric fencesand the pheasants1; they were absolutely delicious, a rare setter’s and vetter’s perk. Thanks to allthat helped with the collection of controls, all that helped with the running of the event, all those(except Dave) that helped with the computer, a moderate thanks to those that considered protestingcontrol positions but didn't, an enormous thanks to Geoff, and a general thanks to those that turnedup and participated, and of course, Big Hewie for a cracking day even though that was possiblyresponsible for a few members opting to go to the beach for a swim and a sunbathe instead.Possibly we could look at car pooling for those events a little further out than normal to keep thenumbers up.

Rob1. Editor’s Note: I think I can explain Bill Beamish’s remarkable marksmanship. With

out checking, I’d guess that he is a descendant of Captain Harold Francis “Kiwi” BeamishD.S.C. of 3 Squadron, Royal Naval Air Service and 203 Squadron, RAF. During 1917-18, heshot down 11 German aircraft while flying Sopwith Pups and Camels, to finish as New Zea-land’s 6th highest scoring ace of World War 1. He later farmed at ...Whanawhana.

11Te Mata Peak (Score)The bottom half of Te Mata Peak was covered in cloud as I drove from Napier early in themorning of 8/8/10, but at least it wasn’t raining as had been predicted. My wonderful helpersfor the day, Mike and Lynn Helliwell, were already there by the time I had put out directionsand with little fuss the caravan and all the other trappings needed for an event were set up andready to go. When the first runners arrived out came the sun and the rest of the day went likeclock-work – apart from one control not having a clipper, but this was soon fixed by Lynn whohad an unexpected early run. Thanks so much Lynn and Mike for your cheerful, efficient helpand I was particularly appreciative Mike that you drove the caravan for me. Thanks also toPhillip Herries who brought the toilet (so that a certain un-named senior orienteer would notbe caught out), to Roger who manned the caravan and to the control collectors at the end ofthe day.

Preparation for this day started in my mind some months beforehand but I didn’t really havemuch time to do much about it until 2-3 weeks beforehand. Someone told me that everyoneknows Te Mata Peak and maybe I could do something different, perhaps use an old black andwhite map to make it more interesting (which I didn’t do). On the other hand others told methat they found the maze of paths confusing and the terrain itself is challenging, meaning thatrunning can be slower than expected on a 1:5000 map. I fitted into this second category andwas quite happy to give it a go, so that I could finally “suss it out.” My vetter Pamela told menot to try and cover the map but to concentrate on maximizing route choices. Download Con-des she said, ask David Fisher to forward me the map and there should be no problem….yeahright! Many hours later (don’t ask my wife how many) a couple of trips to the peak and somephone calls to David I finally had the courses done. Pamela knows the area so well that she didnot have to go out and check, so after some adjustments she kindly sent it all off to the printer. My son Karl (who originally got me into orienteering) happened to be at home and he helpedme put controls out on Saturday. However we took longer than expected and by the time Pam-ela and Geoff arrived to check them we still had some to go. Thanks both of you for puttingout those last controls and for all the rest of your help. I was glad you had lights to check thelast one!

The course was well received and I think it did offer lots of choices. I was also pleased that oneperson, Duncan, was able to almost, but not quite, gain maximum points. It was much moredifficult for others and I realised that when I saw some of the scores; I thought at the time thatit was brave for someone to take on a score event rather than the white course when they had-n’t done any orienteering before.

My lasting impression of the day was a young girl telling her mother that she had been scram-bling up and down cliffs and hanging on trees. I don’t know how many points she got but theglow on her face said it all. This is what orienteering is all about!

July - the Helliwell familyHow long have you been involved in orienteering? Lyn started in 2001

How did you get involved with orienteering? Lyn had to do 3 courses as part of her OutdoorInstructors Course, then carried it on for training in Adventure Racing. Got Mike, Cameron andAmber to come along as well. Initially Mike went with Amber but then ventured out on his ownto do an Orange Course.

What do you remember about your first event? Wet and muddy and lots of fun.

What courses do you usually run? Lyn does Red Short or Med, Mike does Orange but ismoving up to Red soon. We’re trying to get Amber to move from Yellow to Orange.

What do you enjoy about orienteering? Finding the checkpoints where I thought they wouldbe. Setters aren’t always good at putting them there.

If we met you during the week, what would you be doing? Mike would be cleaning and rentingout cars , Lyn sneaks off for a run or a paddle or a cycle, sometimes all in one day

What's the most absurd thing you have hidden in a dark closet at home and how did youget it? Flipfold – the ultimate folding tool, perfectly folds all sizes of Polo Shirts, T-Shirts,Sweaters, Pants, Towels. A never used Xmas present from Canada. (If anyone wants it just askMike.)

Member of the MonthAugust - Pearson WilliamsHow long have you been involved in orienteering? I have been involved since year 4 in Pri-mary school, so I am now year 12, 8 years or so, on and off though.

How did you get involved with orienteering? I got involved when the Barrett family (Jenny andco.) took me to an event out at Maraetotaroa. I was good friends with Jay and they took me outthere for a reason I cannot remember.

What do you remember about your first event? Running in a large square paddock (fairly basicstuff) with Jay behind me to make sure I did not get lost, lots of rocks and doing skids in the gravelon the way there.

What courses do you usually run? These days I’m normally running on a red medium, justbecause the distances are a little more friendly. And I think I would get totally walloped in thered long.

What do you enjoy about orienteering? Mud, blackberry and large impassable objects that Imanage to pass. Orienteering for me is all about the challenge of running and thinking fast inthe middle of nowhere with only a map to guide you. I feel a little bit adventurous when I’mnot suffering severe fatigue. It’s very satisfying finding your way around a large and hardcourse. It is a good mix of brains and fitness.

If we met you during the week, what would you be doing? Eating, sleeping or swimming.School is crammed in there too with refueling and dechlorination.

What's the most absurd thing you have hidden in a dark closet at home and how did youget it? My O maps of Maraetotaroa. I always seem to get hopelessly lost on that map, and so

never want to see the mapsagain and relive stupid mis-

takes. They go to the bottomof my dark closet.

Pearson’s after school job isworking for a beloved videogame character cum Italianplumber.

17OY 4—Havelock VillageSix weeks out and I have the map.Four weeks out and I still have the map. Still without any control sites, and not a clue

about where to start. No problem, I’ll just ask my vetter Derek for some advice when I see himat Pukeora. Except he doesn’t turn up – the only time I can remember him doing this in the last5 years. So I ask a few other familiar faces instead, most of whom say they are not really surehow many courses an urban sprint should have, or how long they should be. Ruth provides ashort, pithy observation on trying to please everybody and refers me to the website for histori-cal information. Wish I’d thought of that.

Three weeks out and Rolf needs to know about contacting landowners. No pressure, butobviously time to pull finger and get something on paper, so it’s time to delve into the un charteddepths of Condes and randomly click on icons until something useful happens. Several hourslater, with constant reference to course specs on the website, I have what I would like to believeis a pretty good set of courses that I have actually managed to print out on separate pieces ofpaper. So far, so good.

Time to get Derek to validate this masterpiece, but when I meet him at the office hedoesn’t have the latest version of Condes on his computer so can’t open my courses. And Ididn’t think to bring paper copies. Must be the first time I’ve been the most technologicallyadvanced person in the room – any room. However, after suggesting a new start/finish area andproviding some general advice, we agree to meet at the Te Mata event and go through every-thing then.

Back in front of the computer screen, I quickly realise that shifting the start/finish willmake all of my previous work redundant. So it’s back to square one. And several more hours oftrying to achieve a fiendishly difficult set of courses on a dead flat course in an urban areathat 90% of club members are very familiar with. At the next meeting with Derek he diplomaticallysteers me towards a range of changes that will hopefully help with the fiendish bit, and thenprovides feedback on the actual sites after a look on the ground. Time is running out fast, butwe seem to be ahead of the game until Saturday night, when Ruth reminds me that the batterythat powers the computer needs to be charged. After two trips to the caravan (occasioned bya boy look the first time) and a certain amount of stress, the battery is duly connected to thecharger and I can get some sleep.

Sunday morning dawns warm and fine-ish, so things are looking up. Until we start put-ting controls out in the mud of Anderson Park and realise just how wet it has been in the last fewweeks. However, we do have the advantage of a sealed carpark and dry access for com- petitors.Phillip and Ruth are on site early to set up the electronic stuff, and Andrea and Marcus Yule havethe caravan ready to go on time, so it was a relatively relaxed few hours of actually running theevent. Except for the unseen individual who moved a white control into the middle of the creekand caused a few white runners to go for a morning dip, and the battery giving up the ghost andrequiring some 4WD gymnastics to get a car close enough to the computer to connect it up again.

Feedback on the day was generally positive, even the slightly excessive length failing togenerate much excitement. For the longer courses, Derek’s counsel to offer route choices onmost of the controls appeared to work very well, with a number of competitors making deci-sions that they later confessed to regretting. For those who ran orange / red short, my sincereapologies for control 7 (#32). A none too couth local obviously got caught short (only 100m

from a public convenience) on Saturday night and it was way too late to think about re-printingmaps on Sunday morning.

Thanks to Derek for making his valuable time available to keep me on track and ensureI learned a little more about the process, as well as his input on the day. Also to Phillip for theelectronic systems (and paper back up), Ruth for baby-sitting me on the computer until Timtook over, to Andrea and Marcus for running the caravan and collecting controls, and last, butnot least, to Rolf for having (along with Stewart Hyslop and Mark Irwin) the most perfectlyaligned punch pattern on his score card, enabling it to be easily used as a template for checkingthe other competitors cards – some of which resembled not so much punch patterns as a card-board colander.Red Long (17) 3.6 km1 Duncan Morrison 22:162 Scott McDonald 23:083 Cameron Massie 23:194 Amber Morrison 24:165 Hamish Goodwin 25:586 Chris Howell 29:477 James Tinker 29:568 Rolf Boswell 29:589 Kyle Higham 30:0810 Phillip Herries 31:3411 Georgia Wedd 34:4412 Neville Smith 36:4213 Russell Higham 37:3814 Adam Forbes 43:0815 George Nelson 54:4016 Stephan Alsleben 57:1017 Callum Wilkie 1:02:17Red Medium (19) 3.6 km1 Pearson Williams 27:182 James McCaughan 29:453 Cairn Coghill 29:484 Samuel Clarke-Winiata 30:025 Mark Irwin 30:136 Nat De Burgh 33:007 Matt Stone 34:128 Holly Edmonds 34:169 Paul Jones 34:2310 John Craven 34:2411 Campbell Edmonds 34:4512 Tim Anderson 36:4713 Steve Armon 38:5914 Murray Richardson 43:1215 Blake Hone 43:1416 Norris Cox 43:4117 Greg Edmonds 49:0918 Alan Davidson 58:3919 Peter Watson 59:20Red Short (10) 2.9 km1 Callum Herries 18:512 Natalie de Burgh 23:513 Sarah Baxter 28:384 Sarah Davidson 28:445 Harriet Baxter 29:176 Zivana Donnelly 33:357 Nicholas Jacobs 34:168 Kelly Mulvay 35:18

HAWKEYEHamish had the ignominy of being beaten into 3rd place byM60s Neil Kane and Michael Wood at the recent Win- terClassic in Wellington.

Lawrence de Burgh’s HNHS team won at the Yr9/10 science quiz at Lindisfarne. Callum’s NBHS team wereplaced 2nd in the Yr9s.

Caroline Howell has been chosen to dance with the Impe-rial Russian Ballet in Napier on October 3.

Helen Howell won the Constance Miller Academic Scholarship to HGHS.

At the recent Town & Country Schools’ Mathletics competition Helen Howell was in the teamplaced 2nd in the Yr 8s. She was the only girl in the top 3 teams.

Navigate Napier located a control in the “motley rock garden” of the Boswell’s house. Evi dentlyRolf has taken exception to his rockery being labelled as such and has employed MaggieBarry to redevelop it. A large digger was recently spotted moving in that direction…

After Navigate Napier, Callum, Ieuan, Devon and Isaac were very happy they didn’t have PEat school. Their team were doing very well until they took a “short cut” through some fight andafter 10 minutes came out INSIDE an industrial site surrounded by 6ft barbed wire fence sothey had to leave back through the fight.

Rumour has it that a well known Yr 1-8 Hastings School Principal was asked not to turn up tohis meeting at St Matthew’s Cathedral for fear the plague and pestilence ravaging his schoolwould then be spread to the parish. He has assured us it was a mere sniffle and nothing to bealarmed about.

Rolf Boswell might be the unluckiest host in the world. For the second time in five years, oneof his guests was murdered at his birthday party. A well known local sports club president, whowas providing security, was powerless to prevent the tragedy. However, he was fortunatein unmasking the killer using the old fashioned “wild stab in the dark” technique – which wasexactly what happened to the victim.

Rolf’s party was fancy dress. Who was the slippery politician and erstwhile drama queen? Whowas the punk that pierced his ear with a safety pin? Who was the fastidious and officious park-ing warden? How did Linda get hold of so many photos of everyone from 30 years ago? It’sprobably best that the answers to these questions never see the light of day... Until you get topage 30.

212010 N. Z. Secondary Schools’Orienteering Championships

In the July School Holidays, the 15th, 16th and 17th, the New Zealand Secondary SchoolsOrienteering Championship was held in Auckland, and what seems to be the Auckland club’sfavourite map, Woodhill Forest. Several School teams from around the Bay travelled up to theevent, including Napier Boys’, Napier Girls’, Havelock North and Karamu.

This year, the competition comprised of a sprint event on the Thursday before the nor- malcompetition and was a test run for future NZSS championships. It was held at a local high school,Roskill College, and was a very fast map and seemed to be quite enjoyed by most com- petitors. The course ran through the building complex, across the school fields and touched a neighbouringreserve. Some top finishers included Cameron Massie (NAPB), 1st in Senior Boys, PearsonWilliams (NAPB) 3rd in Intermediate Boys, Callum Herries (NAPB) 2nd in Jun- ior Boys, SeanMorrison and Jarrod Lobb (both HAVE-INT) 2nd and 3rd in Y7-8 Boys, Jamie Goodwin (HAVE)2nd in Senior Girls and Natalie de Burgh (HAVE) 3rd in Intermediate Girls. Although points fromthe sprint did not contribute to overall standings, it was still an enjoyable event that I hope willbe continued at future NZSS competitions.

The next day was the Individual competition that was set on a section of the ‘awesome’Woodhill forest called Stag’s Roar. The map consisted of blocks of forest with unmapped

mountain bike tracks and intricate contouring that made navigating more difficult than usual.Despite this it was still a well set course that was a great challenge for the competitors. Againthe Bay schools came out with some great finishers including: Duncan Morrison (NAPB) 2nd

in Senior Boys champs, James McCaughan (NAPB) 1st in Senior Boys standard, Pearson Wil-liams (NAPB) 1st and Thomas Eatson (TAUP) 3rd in Intermediate Boys champs, Thomas Airey(NAPB) 3rd in Intermediate Boys standard, Callum Herries and Devon Beckman (NAPB) 2nd

and 3rd respectively in Junior Boys champs, and a clean sweep of Nick Wilkey (HAVE), HarryEvans and Craig Roberts (NAPB) 1st, 2nd and 3rd respectively in Junior Boys standard. To thegirls: Kate Hensman (HAVE) 1st in Senior Girls standard, Holly Edmonds (NAPG) 2nd in Inter-mediate Girls champs, Vida Fox (NAPG) 2nd in Intermediate Girls standard, Brianna Massieand Monieka Scott (NAPG) 1st and 2nd in Junior Girls champs, Laila Franklin and Amy Wol-land (HAVE) 2nd and 3rd in Junior Girls standard. After this race, Napier Boys’ were leadingthe male side of the overall standings while Napier Girls’ were just ahead of their rivals, Havelock North.

The last day consisted of the Relays, the best orienteering race for the spectators. Thisrace was held on the same map, Stag’s Roar, but in a smaller area. The courses also had a greatspectator control where competitors emerged from the forest onto the road right next to the eventcentre, so the runners were in plain view. It was a very exciting and well set course that challengedeven the top teams. Still great results were achieved by our teams: Duncan Morri- son, CameronMassie and Bradley Ivory (NAPB) 1st in Senior Boys, Zane Tomalin, Callum Herries and PearsonWilliams (NAPB) 3rd in Intermediate Boys, Naiomi Anderson, Georgia Lindsay and HollyEdmonds (NAPG) 1st in Intermediate Girls, Harrison Gregory, Mitchell Webber and Nick Wilkey(HAVE) 1st and Devon Beckman, James Allcock and Ieuan Ed- monds (NAPB) 2nd in JuniorBoys, Monieka Scott, Katherine Rybinski and Brianna Massie (NAPG) 1st and Malin Dolden,Laila Franklin and Amy Wolland (HAVE) 2nd in Junior Girls.

The final standings placeNapier Boys’ as the top boysschool, again, whileNapier Girls took out thegirls side of the competition.Despite the rain on Fridayand Saturday, the event wasstill a huge suc- cess anda big congratulation to allthe runners who partici- patedand especially all theplace-getters. Well Done!

23Navigate Napier – August 1, 2010

Fundraisers are generally hard work. The man-hours and effort often equate to an abys-mal hourly rate. So, when the HNI boys hockey team were looking to raise funds for the AIMStournament options included wood chopping, raffles, selling kiwifruit, cleaning sewers andcontract killings, the idea of a rogaine seemed appealing. With Sean, Jarrod Lobb and Oliver Lockall members of the orienteering club, it seemed a fun way of raising funds.

The question was, where to have it at that time of the year? Farmland was out, so whynot an urban event. And, how could we use electronic timing?. Napier, with its city centre, labyrinth of streets and the hill to negotiate, plus outlying areas of Westshore, Onekawa indus-

trial area and Napier Boys’ to the south looked like it had possibilities on the 1:50,000.. Checking the map, revealed plenty of alleyways, tracks and parks which were added and even I wasenvious of the participants on the start-line.

Only 4 controls weren’t guarded, as the organisation to get 23 parents to various mystery locations became a mini-military exercise. The Forlong-Fords, Boswells, Roses and Helli-wells all obliged and allowed markers to be placed on their properties. It turned into a perfectevent to set – put out only 4 controls by car an hour before the event, send out the rest donewith the minders, armed with photographs of the control site, 15 minutes before the start andthen around 3 hours later they all start coming back - some returning before the last of the fin-ishers!

With Superman, Batman and Robin entering the event, enter the press. Eccentricity drawsthe media like nothing else, so this was right up there, making the front page of HB To- day onthe following Monday! Forget the story, madness rules. The photographer had chased them allover town, but probably would not have found them in the 53 minutes it took to get betweenPerfume Point and Pandora Pond. Apparently the time was well served re-hydrating at Shed 2.

Andrew Bott couldn’t find a partner silly enough to go with him and one could see why,as he visited all 27 controls in 2.5 hours, a distance of about 35 kms. So too did Aiden Boswelland Chris Howell (fresh) from Rolf’s 40th birthday party the night before - they finished with acouple of minutes to spare.

The real winners were the variety of participants, some very young and some not soyoung, who went out and had a great time. Many experienced orienteering for the first time -60% of competitors were non club members. Some groups visited cafes on their course ortreated themselves to ice cream at the local dairy and of course the opportunity for a quickbeer was always tempting. There was a great turnout of Napier Boys’ and Girls’ students supportingthe event, and despite a lot of people for various reasons unable to compete, there was a 100who did.

Thanks everyone for your support – GO HNI Boys Hockey!!!!

PS – there were numerous requests afterwards for the next event. Look out for NavigateNapier II in the future - there will be plenty more hockey fundraising to come.

PSS and talking of hockey fundraisers…. Four teams of intelligent orienteers took onthe best of the rest in a HB U13 Hockey quiz evening on August 13. Team “Broken Compasses” made a powerful start picking up the first round prize on Hockey trivia. They sooncame back to the pack with teams “Ripped Maps”, “180’s” and “Mispunches” all showingglimmers of brilliance, but struggling overall to maintain consistent scoring. Thanks everyonefor taking part.

27Scott at the JWOC

This year was my third JWOC and after two years experience I decided to focus on themiddle distance rather than spread my effort over the three individual races. The middle dif-fers from the other races as it has a qualification race followed by the final the next day. Thequalification consists of 3 heats with the top 20 in each going through to the A-final, the next20 in the B-final and the rest in the C-final. Having made the C and B finals the last 2 years Iwas keen to make the A this time around. However, there’s a bit of a mental barrier that I’vestruck in the past when it comes to making the A-final. I was told that a clean run was all thatwas needed to make the A but I learnt that wasn’t quite the case. You did need to be prettyclean but also aggressive in your execution, being cautious and clean probably wouldn’t quitecut it.

Getting drawn to start near the end of the field for the qualification meant that when Ifinished I wouldn’t have to play the waiting game at the end, painfully watching my namedrop slowly down the list into the lower finals as has happened in the last two years. I did getcaught during my race by Rasmus, the top Danish guy who’d won the sprint earlier in theweek, and he was really handy to have around for about 4-5 controls before he got away, butI had been clean before seeing him and continued to be clean and aggressive afterwards whichturned out to be enough to finish 15th in my heat (which Rasmus won) and qualify for my firstA-final! This just about guaranteed that I would beat my previous best JWOC result (of 56th

in the sprint last year) as long as I didn’t completely mess up.New Zealand hadn’t had any men in the A-final since Tom made it in Australia in

2007 so I was proud to qualify along with Matt Ogden (12th) and Angela Simpson (5th) in thewoman’s race. The way that it works on the day is that the C and B finals run first and finishbefore the A-final starts. This creates a good atmosphere for the A runners with the early run-ners and all the people running the spectator races all there cheering for them as they comethrough the spectator control and into the finish. The starts are staggered so that those whoqualified first start last in the final which builds up the excitement as the race progresses. Itwas really awesome to watch it all unfold last year and to be in it this year was exciting andI was determined to do well.

I stuck with the same preparation that I’d been using all week of sitting down the nightbefore and planning out what to do before the race from waking up to starting. This meant thatI wouldn’t be thinking about what to do in the lead up to the race and that I could fully focuson the race itself. This is something I’d like to bring back to events here but it’s a bit harderwhen it’s not a serious race and you keep bumping into people to talk to which is great but itdisrupts the whole process. Although I think it’s important (for me at least) to socialise andchill out before the race a bit to avoid getting too tense or nervous. So don’t be worried to havea chat to me before a race!

Anyway my preparation went well and I was in a really good mindset before the start– really focused, not nervous much, just telling myself to concentrate hard and to stay in controlthe whole time. If I was in control then I’d be clean and my confidence would grow from that. This meant not going too fast, especially as the early stuff looked like it was going to be tricky, detailed dunes. I knew that I was never going to win the race in the first few controls (notthat I thought I had any chance of winning anyway!) so I was just determined not to lose it.

Page 29: 2010 08 CPoints - hborienteering.comhborienteering.com/club/uploads/cpoints/2010_08.pdf · Sarah Anderson mp Anne Baxter mp Yellow 1 2.0 km 19 C 1 Hamish Duncan 23:54 2 Sue Stone

28

As expected the start was tricky and as I’d planned I took the first few controls fairlycautiously, nailing them but having relatively slow splits. The fourth control was a longer onein the dunes. I stuck on my compass and picked up the vegetation well along the way but mis-read the contours coming close to the control and swayed off slightly. I felt it wasn’t quiteright and should’ve stopped and sorted it right then but instead I trusted myself and went on tomess it up completely – losing about 90 seconds (to many people this might not sound like acomplete screw up but when racing against the top juniors it’s quite a bit). I tried to just getback into my rhythm after this but the dunes got the better of me again on the 6th control whereI lost about 60 seconds after losing focus slightly and undershooting the control. Despite thesemistakes I’d caught and passed two other runners who were obviously having greater troublesthan I was among the sand hills. I knew other runners would make mistakes in the early con-trols too so I just put my mistakes behind me and focussed on settling back into my rhythmrather than trying to hare off and make up for lost time.

The next part of the course took us into the slightly easier forest where I was reasona-bly clean but not fast or aggressive enough to catch up any places. Not far from the end of thecourse was the spectator control which was awesome to come through with on wall of peoplealong a chute yelling and cheering and gave me a bit of a boost for the last loop. I’d also justbeen caught by the top British lad, Ralph, so tried to stick with him until the end but he wasabsolutely storming along and I just couldn’t keep up beyond about 2-3 controls. He ended upgetting 7th and it just reminded me how good some of these guys are. It was like he was run-ning an 800m race and he was nailing every single control – how am I meant to beat that? ButI guess it’s just another mental barrier, just like making the A-final was. All it takes is a hell of

Page 30: 2010 08 CPoints - hborienteering.comhborienteering.com/club/uploads/cpoints/2010_08.pdf · Sarah Anderson mp Anne Baxter mp Yellow 1 2.0 km 19 C 1 Hamish Duncan 23:54 2 Sue Stone

29a lot of hard work! Anyway I sprinted down the finish chute to the NZ team singing some ren-dition of “Old McDonald” to spur me on.

So I finished with mixed feelings, frustrated with my mistakes but happy that I got mybest JWOC result to date of 45th. Matt was 3 seconds behind me in 46th (he was ahead until thesplit to the finish where I beat him by 5 seconds) and Angela placed 36th to cap off a solid weekfor herself.

So where to go from here? Next year in Poland is my last JWOC and I’d like to focus onthe middle again but also on the sprint. I think I can improve, firstly, by training harder and beingfitter for next year so that I can at least keep up with those top guys. I also need to work on myrace plan and have strategies to cope with different situations, so that I actually do stop when Ilose myself next time.

Thanks to the club for their support once again, to everyone who buys baking at club events,to the University of Canterbury and Sport Hawke's Bay for their generous donations, to the teamand of course to my family!

Editor’s Note: The other members of HBOC who were selected to participate at JWOC wereDuncan Morrison, Kate Morrison, Jamie Goodwin and Rachel Goodwin. Rachel, unfortu-nately , was unable to participate due to injury and the other three all promised me photos thatwould “amaze me.” I guess they decided they were inappropriate to our readers...

Letter to the EditorDear Sir/Madman

At the recent OY at Havelock Village, I followed my young son and his mate around theWhite course. The course planning was excellent, however they (and others that I noticed)had real trouble seeing the small ‘street controls’ that we have. Several times the boys ranstraight past the control and become frustrated when they couldn’t find it.

One of the key criteria for a control site is that it is visible once you are at the featuredescribed in the control description. I am sure most club members will have had frustratingmoments trying to find one of those small controls.

It occurred to me, that perhaps it was time we designed something better for our subur-ban events. It may not be as big or visible as our normal controls but perhaps someone couldcome up with something better than we currently have.

I suppose they will need to have a reasonable vertical profile so that runners can see it asthey approach. They could be free standing or on a stake as they are now but they will need toretain the chain and lock. Is there a possibility that the Sport Ident box could also bechained/locked to the control so that we could use them for urban events?

So if you are the ‘inventor’ type or perhaps a senior student who wants a science fairproject, then this could be the challenge for you!

CheersRolf Boswell
