The shadow of religion in history

Manybelievenowadaysthatreligionisthecauseofunrestsandconflictsbetweenpeoplesandnations, andintheendofthewarsthatshakemankind.Indeed, differencesin religious understandings led to conflicts many timesthroughhistory, even to thoseof theworstkind–armedones.

LetustakeasanexampletheCrusadesthatChristianswaged against Muslims in the Middle East during theMiddleAges:somanyvictimsfellfornothing, withtwistedmotivationofconqueringaterritory“inthenameofGod”.EvengreaterevilhappenedduringtheSecondWorldWar,whenGermany, ledbytheNazileaderHitler, performedthebloodiestandmosthorriblegenocidefoundinthehumanhistory:wholeethniccommunitiesweredecimated, mostlythemembers of the Jewish national and religious group, whowereoutof jealousyandenvyproclaimedunworthyoflife.

There were many more conflicts and persecutionscausedbyreligionandreligiousintolerances, butthesehadnot escalated to full-scale wars; instead, they remainedhidden from the history. No one should keep secret theatrocities performed because of religions, moreover:

DivineandgreatApostlePaul, definingwhatthefaithis, says:“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” (Hebrews,11:1) If someonedefined itas innergood, orthetrueknowledge, onethatconfirmsthesecretgoods, hewouldn’tdowrongtotruth.Afterall, theLord, teachingusaboutthesecretthingsandthatwedon’tseebutwehopefor, says:„The Kingdom of God is within you“. Religion and society before and now

Anytalkaboutreligiontodayisverydifficultandrisksbeing vague. We cannot speak about religion in general, onlyaboutreligions, thatisaboutfaiths, whichmakesthisspeechverysubjectiveandoftenbiased.

Religion came into being as man’s aspiration forsomething greater, as a wish to fulfill his purpose. It’s asimple attempt to respond tohis existence. Thequestionappears:whywouldpeopleatall liveon theplanet, whywouldtheyinhabittheEarth, withouthavingagoodreason.Itwasnotonlythereligionwhichtriedtogivetheanswerto this question, but philosophy aswell, with its roots inGreece.
