Allegheny College, the nation’s 32nd oldest college, is a nation-ally recognized college of the liberal arts and sciences. Allegheny’s 2,100 students are active in social, economic, and environmental issues and work collaboratively with faculty as part of the learning process. The College’s nationally recognized programs such as the Center for Political Participation, the Allegheny College Center for Experiential Learning, and the Center for Economic and Environ-mental Development offer powerful and engaging out-of-classroom experiences. In 2002 Allegheny College was selected as one of ten founding institutions to participate in Project Pericles, a not-for-profit organization funded by the Eugene M. Lang Foundation, committed to instilling in students a sense of social responsibility and civic concern. With about 40 programs of study and the capstone comprehensive Senior Project, the College’s rigorous education results in benefits that include acceptance rates to medical and law school that are twice the national average. And Allegheny’s geographic setting is ideal for our active student population, who enjoy biking, rock climbing, canoeing, and kayaking. We’re proud of Allegheny’s beautiful campus and cutting-edge technologies. And we know that our professors are leading scholars who pride themselves even more on being among the best teachers in the nation. But it’s our students who make Allegheny the unique and special place that it is. How do we characterize them? Though it’s impossible to label them, they do share some common characteristics. You’ll find an abiding passion for learning and life, a spirit of camaraderie and shared inquiry that spans individuals as well as areas of study. And you’ll see over and over again such a variety of interests and passions and skills that after a while unusual combinations don’t seem so unusual at all. Allegheny is not for everybody. If you’re the kind of student who finds labels reassuring...if you’re looking for a narrow

technical training...if you’re in search of the shortest distance between point A and point B...then maybe another college will be better for you. But, if you prefer the scenic route...if you recognize that everything you experience between points A and B will make you appreciate point B that much more...if you’ve noticed that when life gives you a choice between two things, you’re tempted to answer, “Both!” or simply, “Yes!”...if you start to get excited because you sense there is a college willing to echo the resounding YES from the various unusual combinations you feel within yourself...then we look forward to meeting you.

A national liberal arts college where 2,100 students with unusual combinations of interests, skills and talents excel.

Allegheny Advantage

Why Gators? Even though Allegheny shares its nickname with two other NCAA schools—the University of Florida and San Francisco State University (their Gators are Golden)—it seems the least likely to identify its student body with “Gators.” An alliga-tor in Meadville, Pa.? Through 1925, Allegheny teams had been referred to as Hilltoppers, Methodists, Timothi-ans (in deference to College founder Timothy Alden), and the Blue and Gold. In April of 1925, a group of Allegheny students published the first issue of a humor magazine titled the Allegheny Alligator. The editors explained the reasoning behind the title thus: “The name, Alligator, was selected not because the alligator is noted for its sense of humor, nor because the haunts of the above-mentioned critter are located in this vicinity, but purely and simply because of the 99.44% alliterative value of its orthography.” A column in that first issue was titled “Gator Gossip,” and in the fall of 1926 an organization called the Go-Get-’Em Gator Club appeared on campus. The club made its presence known at football games by occupying a reserved section of the bleachers and serving as a nucleus for the cheering section. By the end of the decade, Allegheny’s athletic teams were referred to as the Gators. It wasn’t until the 1970s that the name took on a face. It was then that a group of students started a publication evaluating faculty and courses. An illustration of a gator used in one of those publications was adopted by the College administration and eventually evolved into the nameless gator most Alleghenians are familiar with—posed in a tough but friendly stance and proudly wearing a varsity letter sweater. In 1980 the Golden Gator Club was formed, an organization that remains an important link between the Athletics Department and alumni. The gator graphic has retained its strong identity with athletics and in the fall of 2004, it was re-designed to give it a more contemporary look. A new mascot costume was unveiled and “Chom-pers” (above) made its debut.

A complete athletic facility comparable to the best among col-leges Allegheny’s size, the David V. Wise Sport & Fitness Center was opened in the 1997 volleyball season. The multi-million dollar build-ing is the hub of all indoor athletic activities on campus.

The 1,200-seat performance arena (right) is home to the bas-ketball and volleyball teams. The Neo-Shok floor is used by several NBA teams, including the Miami Heat. The arena’s six BPI baskets are among the best and most widely used on the market. The team locker rooms are located at court level and measure approximately 17-x-30 feet. Spectators enter the arena at street level on to a spacious concourse. The playing floor lies 15 feet below, creating a remark-able amphitheater effect. The bleachers, which include three rows of chairback seating, can be electronically compressed to create two full-length courts for basketball practices.

The first basketball game ever played at the Wise Center, left, took place on November 21, 1997 in the opening round of the Days Inn/Allegheny Tip-Off Tournament. Allegheny faced off with Fredonia State in women’s basketball action, with the hosts coming out on top 75-36. After the Blue Devils picked up the first ever bucket in the new gym, the Gators reeled off a 15-0 run to take the lead for good, includ-ing a layup by Chris Stefanini to kick things off. Shannon Keller led all scorers in the game with 18 points, while Sarah Kuhner was the top rebounder with eight.

The weight room (right) houses contemporary fitness equipment, which includes the newest Galileo resistance machines and free weights, stairclimbers, stationary bicycles and other similar fitness machines.

The sports forum (right) encompasses most of the upper level of the Wise Center. It is primarily used for open recreation, intramu-rals and physical education classes. Its 27,000 feet of floor space is roughly three-quarters the size of a football field. A 210-meter, four-lane jogging track is suspended 14 feet above the perimeter of the sports forum.

Also included in the Wise Center but not pictured: the Mellon Pool, three racquetball courts, an aerobics/dance room, the state-of-the-art athletic training room and all athletic department offices.

2010-11 Season Preview

After making a run to the championship game in the NCAC tournament in 2008-09, the Allegheny women’s basketball team endured injuries late in the year last season and took a step back finishing 10-16 overall and 7-6 in conference play. Despite the adverse outcome, the 2010-11 Gators, having learned from the experience, are poised to make another deep conference tournament run. The Gators return eight letterwin-ners from a year ago, including three starters. With a roster boasting five seniors, no juniors and 10 underclass-men, fourth-year head coach Kate Costanzo will rely on her senior class to provide the leadership on and off the court. “Our seniors obviously have the most experience on the team, especially at the guard position,” says Costanzo. “We will need them to set the tone on the court and be a positive example for the underclassmen.” Through the first couple of weeks into camp, Costanzo’s club is show-ing positive signs of adapting to the style of play the Gators will run in 2010-11. With no true center on the roster, the Gators will feature a smaller lineup, with guards and forwards. In a game where lack of size can create disadvantages against bigger teams, Costanzo has a different take on her team’s size. “We will be a very athletic team. Our style will be to push the tempo and use our size and athleti-cism as strengths of the team.” Given the makeup of the roster for the Ga-

tors, getting quality guard play will be paramount to the success of the team. Of the eight returning letterwin-ners, senior guard Jill Gregory is the most decorated with conference acco-lades. She garnered All-NCAC Honor-able mention as a sophomore and was selected to the All-NCAC First Team as a junior. In both seasons, she led the team in scoring. Last season she was the only Gator to average double-digit points (14.2). Gregory, who sits at 846 career points entering the season, is on track to be the first 1,000 point scorer under the guidance of Costan-zo. One of the four team captains, Gregory, who has the ability to gener-ate offense, brings an energy that is contagious and wreaks havoc on the opposition. Costanzo expects her to continue to be the scoring catalyst as well as being a force on defense. Joining Gregory as team captains will be classmates Kat Hritz, Laura Magnelli, and Britni Mohney. Magnelli and Mohney played in every game with Mohney also starting all 26 games last season, and Hritz bolsters the senior leadership. Mohney, who ran the point last year, will be asked to develop into more of a scoring threat. A vocal “coach on the court”, she brings solid defensive skills and a high basketball I.Q. from the point guard position. Magnelli returns as one of the best all-around shooters on the team. Enter-ing into her fourth year on the team, she has either been a sixth man or starter her entire career. Described by Costanzo as a disruptive defensive player, Magnelli will be asked to pull down the tough boards and become an even bigger rebounding presence. Hritz, a three-point sharpshooter, will be a role player coming off the bench this season. A great leader with high basketball knowledge, she has be-come more of a vocal presence. Nikki Johnson will re-join the team after spending a semester studying abroad last season. Johnson , when on the court, will help anchor the post at the forward position. With no juniors on the team, the 2010-11 Gators will feature 10 un-derclassmen including four returning sophomores that all gained valuable

minutes as true freshmen. Heidi Goeller returns as the Gators presence in the post after being a regular starter her rookie campaign. At 6-0, Goeller is athletic and quick at the post posi-tion which allows her the ability to work past some of her opposition in the paint. Skilled with a quality turn-around jump shot, she led the team in field goal percentage shooting .459 from the floor. With a year of playing experience under her belt, her num-bers project to rise. Becca Bajkowski, Daryl Ford, and Ann Ryan round out the sophomore class and will figure into the rotation. New to the mix will be the six incoming freshmen. The influx of new talent will help push the returnees as several newcomers will push for playing time in their rookie campaigns. Highly touted rookie Saddie Gravatt comes in with a ton of potential, sees the court well, and possesses a great three-point shot. Kendra Pilarski and Erica Restich will join Gravatt in com-petition for playing time as freshmen. Becky Nowacki, Cecilia Siegel, and Ally Weiner will add depth and Costanzo is counting on them to develop in their rookie campaigns. In a tough and competitive NCAC, Costanzo and the Gators know they will be in for a battle each conference game. With the ultimate goal of mak-ing their way back to the top of the NCAC, Costanzo will have her Gators focusing on improving their overall rebounding game, and emphasizing ball control in a league that features scrappy defenses who rebound well.

Head Coach Kate Costanzo Kate Costanzo enters her fourth season as the head women’s basketball coach at Allegheny. Costanzo became the eighth head coach in program history after serving as the Gators’ interim coach during the 2007-08 season.

In her first full season as the head coach, Costanzo led the team to the NCAC play-offs for the second straight year and advanced to the championship game. The Gators finished with a 16-12 overall record. She also mentored four all-conference players.

In her year as the interim head coach, Costanzo led a very young squad to an 11-15 finish with an 8-8 mark in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Allegheny closed out the season with six wins in its final eight contests before falling at Denison in the first round of the NCAC Tournament.

Prior to arriving at Allegheny, she served as a business analyst for the Pennsylva-nia State System of Higher Education for two years. Costanzo also spent the 2006-07 season on the Dickinson women’s basketball staff as a volunteer assistant coach. That year, the Red Devils posted a 22-6 record and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.

A native of Manorville, Pa., and a 2002 graduate of Penn State Erie, the Behrend College, Costanzo was a two-year All-Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference selection for the Lady Lions. During her freshman campaign, she helped the Lions win their first-ever AMCC title. In 2000, Behrend advanced to the ECAC Tournament and the following year she led the squad to only its second NCAA Tournament berth. She ranks fourth on Lions’ all-time scoring list with 1,055 points, having averaged 10.0 points per game for her career. Two of her teams, the 1998-99 and 2000-01 were recently inducted into the Behrend Hall of Fame.

Costanzo also holds a Master of Arts degree in student affairs and higher educa-tion from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She is also a member of the Women’s Bas-ketball Coaches Association.

She has been selected to serve as the North Coast Athletic Conference Captain for the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) in the 2010-11 season.

The Allegheny women’s basketball program is in its 37th year of existence. Gator teams have combined to produce 513 wins and a .618 winning percentage. Allegheny has captured six NCAC regular season championships as well as five conference tournament crowns.

Allegheny College Gators

Three Named to All-NCAC Women’s Hoops Team Seniors Brittany Bell and Emilie Simone along with junior Jill Gregory earned All-NCAC recognition for their efforts in the 2009-10 season. Gregory headlined the trio landing on the first team, while Simone nabbed second team honors and Bell made the honorable mention team. Gregory, an honorable-mention selection last season, led the team in scoring with 14.2 points per game. She also led the team in steals (37), while ranking second in assists (55) and third in rebounds per game (4.8). Gregory recorded double-digit points in 20 out of 25 games, including five contests putting up 20+ points and matching her career high on two occasions (23). Simone, a senior forward, earned her third all-conference honor and her second selection as a

second team honroee. Her first second team nod came in 2008. As a junior, Simone garnered honorable mention accolades. Simone averaged 9.4 points per game and grabbed a team-high 5.7 boards per contest.

A fixture in the post, Simone shot 44.9 percent from the floor

and led the team with 40 blocks, including seven swats at Oberlin for the second-most blocks in a game by a Gator in program history. She scored a career-high 24 points this season in a 69-55 win over Hiram. Simone leaves the program ranked fifth on Allegheny’s all-time blocks list with 98. Bell returns to the All-NCAC team after being named an honorable mention honoree in 2008. The senior guard knocked in 59 trifectas to help her average 9.9 points per game. She started in every contest and shot 93 percent from the charity stripe (28-for-30). Bell came away with 35 steals and dished out 52 assists this season. In the overtime win against Oberlin, Bell matched a career high six three point-ers for a career-best 24 point effort. The multiple nods for the Gators marks the 11th straight-season Allegheny has multiple players on the all-conference team.

Bell Named NCAC Player of the Week Senior guard Brittany Bell, was named the North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) Player of the Week for the week ending February 7, 2010. Bell shot 57 percent from the floor and 52 percent from behind the arc, averaging 15 points in a 2-1 week for the Gators. She knocked in 11 triples on the week, including five against Witten-berg for a team-high 17 points. Bell also added 13 and 15 points in the wins over Hiram and Earlham, respectively. At that point in the season, she ranked second on the team with 9.8 points per game, and was second in the NCAC in three-point field-goal percentage (.385) and was fourth in three-pointer per game (2.24).

Gators Fall To Denison in NCAC Playoffs No. 3 seed Denison women’s basketball team had five players in double figures, including Serafina Nuzzo tying a game-high 18 points to lead the Big Red over No. 6 Allegheny 80-58 in the North Coast Athletic (NCAC) quarterfinals on Tuesday night. Denison (19-7) outscored the Gators (10-16) by 11 points in each half to post its third win of the season over Allegheny to advance to the NCAC Semifinals on Friday at Wittenberg. Shaina Kaiser went 6-for-11 for 13 points and Lucy Follansbee came off the bench to score 12. Freshman

Heidi Goeller netted a career-high 18 points and four steals to pace the Gators. Emilie Simone added 11 points and three blocks.

Each team shot 50 percent or better from the floor in the first stanza, keeping the contest close until the final three minutes of the half. Allegheny had an 8-5 lead at the 16:55 mark and went ahead 14-13 on a Goeller jumper. Kyli Parker drained a triple off a Gator turnover to give the Big Red the lead for good at 16-14. Allegheny got within two points on three oc-casions over the next several minutes, but Kaiser, Nuzzo and Follansbee recorded four points apiece down the stretch to help Denison get an 11-point cushion at halftime. The Big Red continued to build upon their score with a 16-4 run to begin the second half to make it 57-36. The Gators could not recover in the final 13:50 of the game. Denison tallied its biggest lead with 3:51 left on Follansbee’s two free throws at 78-48. The Big Red knocked in seven three-pointers on the night, while Allegheny did not get one shot from behind the arc to drop. Both teams shot 83.3 percent from the free-throw line and Denison pulled down one more rebound (32-31). The Gators conclude their season with a 10-16 overall record and a 7-9 conference mark.

Women’s Basketball Hands Out Annual Awards The Allegheny women’s basketball program held its annual team banquet on Monday night at East AlCove on campus, where the coaching staff handed out four awards during the event. Junior Jill Gregory won the Most Valuable Player Award (The Gator Award) after being named to the All-North Coast Athletic Conference (NCAC) First Team and leading the squad with 14.2 points per game. Freshman Greta Pszenny took home the Most Improved Award (Blue & Gold Heart), while senior Shannon Culbreath earned the Gold “A” award for the Defensive Player of the Year honor. Founded in 1983, the North Coast Athletic Conference is dedicated to fostering a complementary relationship between intercollegiate athletics and the pursuit of academic excellence. Consisting of nine academically selective colleges and universities in Ohio, Indiana and Pennsylvania — Allegheny College, Denison University, Hiram College, Kenyon College, Oberlin College, Ohio Wesleyan University, Wabash College, Wittenberg University and The College of Wooster. Starting in 2011-12, DePauw University will join the NCAC as a full member — the NCAC believes that high-level athletic programs need not be sacrificed in order to meet rigid academic standards. Significantly, all nine NCAC institutions have been granted chapters of Phi Beta Kappa, the preeminent honor society for colleges and universities. Only 270 of the more than 3,000 four-year institutions in the United States have been so honored. A member of the National Collegiate Athletic As-sociation’s Division III, the NCAC features championship competition in 22 sports — 11 for men and 11 for wom-en. The 11 women’s sports are the most offered by any Division III conference, and the equality in number and emphasis between men’s and women’s athletics is just one of the elements that sets the North Coast apart. The goals of the conference express the best aspi-rations of American amateur athletics. The NCAC brings together a group of institutions which share a common allegiance to academic quality and to the conduct of athletics so as to support the educational purpose. In-tercollegiate athletics can and should complement aca-demic life, rather than compete with it, and sports should enhance the experience of students during their college years. This type of academic and athletic commitment has been led by the 10 school presidents, who have tak-en an active role in the governance of the conference. The NCAC’s commitment to equity, its broad base of athletic programs, and an unwavering insistence on excellence in academics has served as a model for conferences throughout the country. The North Coast has shown not only that these ideals can coexist, but that they can flourish. The NCAC continues as a pace-setter in the 21st century.
