Washington, D.C.Washington, D.C.The National Mall is usually the center of every visitor’s trip to Washington DC. This tree-lined area of parkland stretches two and a half miles from the Potomac River to the United States Capitol on Capitol Hill and is adjoined by the White House. At one end of the National Mall, known as West Potomac Park, the Lincoln Memorial faces the Refl ecting Pool with a good view of Arlington Memorial Bridge, Constitution Gardens, the Tidal Basin and the Washington Monument. Further towards Capitol Hill are a number of museums and galleries, among which are many of the Smithsonian Institution’s museums, including the National Museum of Natural History, the National Air and Space Museum, National Museum of the American Indian, and the Smithsonian Institution building.

Situated within the northwest quadrant of Washington, D.C., American University’s traditional-style campus has much to offer students in the way of comfort, modern conveniences, and quick, easy access to city life.

Our 84-acre, tree-lined campus, which was designated as a National Arboretum, is located at the top of Embassy Row in one of the most attractive, safe, and residential areas of our nation’s capital.

The center of campus, also referred to as “the quad,” is a focal point of student life not only because our academic buildings line its grassy borders, but also because it’s a place to meet-and-greet with friends and student groups, catch an impromptu game of ultimate frisbee or take part in an after-class debrief with professors.

Another favorite spot on campus is the beach volleyball pit located between the athletics fi elds. The adjacent grassy hillside is also a well known hangout for students on game days.

In TheIn TheSpotlightSpotlightAmerican University is located in the center of one of the largest media markets in the country, Washington, D.C. From television to radio, AU student-athletes gain exposure on both a local and national level.

Each of the four major television networks (ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox) has an affi liate in D.C. and can often be found on campus. Regional cable networks Comcast SportsNet and MASN also cover the Eagles throughout the year.

National newspapers The Washington Post and Washington Times serve as AU’s hometown papers. USA Today is also headquartered just miles away from campus.

AcademicAcademicSupportSupport

Marueen Breslin, Coordinator of Academic Support, tutors a student-athlete in the Bender Library.

The academic support program for student-athletes, a collaboration between the Academic Support Center and the Department of Athletics, assists student-athletes in successfully attaining academic goals and creating a balance between academics and athletics. The program serves to promote responsibility and initiative while encouraging student-athletes to take advantage of the rich resources offered at American University.

Academic counselors work with student-athletes on skills needed for success in the classroom, and provide information about educational options, university and NCAA requirements, as well as policies and procedures. The program focuses on the development of the total person through individual meetings, study hall and tutoring, and life skills workshops. AU’s academic support program coordinates with faculty, advisors, and coaches to support each student-athlete.

Now in its third decade as an all-sport conference combining academic and athletic excellence, the Patriot League sponsors championships in 23 men and women’s sports. Initially started as an NCAA Division I-AA football conference in 1986, the Patriot League became an all-sport conference in 1990 and includes American, Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh and Navy as full members, and Fordham, Georgetown and MIT as associate members. These institutions are among the oldest and most prestigious in the nation and their alumni have, and continue to play leadership roles in shaping our country.

Since 1998, the Patriot League has ranked fi rst each year among all Division I conferences awarding athletic aid in the NCAA Graduation Rate Report. The League fi nished at the top spot with 96 percent of its teams reporting a graduation rate of 85 percent or higher in the most recent data.

Cornelius Kerwin was named president in the 2007-08 academic year after serving as acting and interim president since August 24, 2005. Dr. Kerwin is a longstanding member of the AU community. He earned a BA from American University in 1971 (followed by an MA in political science from the University of Rhode Island in 1973, and a PhD in political science from Johns Hopkins University in 1978) and has been a member of the AU faculty since 1975. He held a number of prominent leadership positions within the School of Public Affairs, including serving as dean from 1989 to 1997, acting provost from 1997 to 1998, and provost from 1998 to 2005.

A longtime supporter of AU athletics, Dr. Kerwin endorsed AU’s decision to move to the Patriot League in 2001, joining Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, Lafayette, Lehigh, Army, and Navy in athletic competition that has resulted in 30 Patriot League championships (fi eld hockey, men’s cross country, women’s cross country, women’s lacrosse, men’s soccer, women’s soccer, men’s tennis, women’s tennis and women’s volleyball, and men’s basketball). Since fall 2005, the Department of Athletics and Recreation has reported directly to Dr. Kerwin, a move that refl ects the strong relationship between academic and athletic achievement at AU.

As provost, Dr. Kerwin was the university’s chief academic offi cer, leading approximately 475 full-time teaching faculty in AU’s six schools and colleges (College of Arts and Sciences, Kogod School of Business, School of Communication, School of International Service, School of Public Affairs, and Washington College of Law). Among the offi ces he supervised are: admissions, fi nancial aid, the Offi ce of Institutional Research and Assessment, the University Library, the Offi ce of the Registrar, and the Washington Semester Program and those reporting to the Dean of Academic Affairs (including the General Education and Honors Programs). His accomplishments as provost

include: working with deans and faculty to complete AU’s master’s and doctoral program reviews; overseeing creation of the University College Program for fi rst-year undergraduate students; leading the process to restructure faculty governance and create a new Faculty Senate; and overseeing AU’s decennial self-study that resulted in the Middle States Association Commission’s unconditional reaccreditation. Dr. Kerwin also advanced major efforts to support faculty scholarship, teaching, service, and diversity; bring faculty salaries to the AAUP–Level 1 standard; and develop plans for assessing student learning.

A professor of public administration in the School of Public Affairs, Dr. Kerwin is a nationally recognized specialist in public policy, with emphasis on the regulatory process. He teaches courses in administrative process, policy implementation, and American government and is actively engaged in research. Dr. Kerwin founded and directs AU’s Center for the Study of Rulemaking. He is the author of Rulemaking: How Government Agencies Write Law and Make Policy (3rd ed., 2003, Congressional Quarterly Press) and the coauthor of How Washington Works: The Executives Guide to Government (3rd ed., 1996). His scholarly articles have appeared in Public Administration Review, Journal of Politics, Policy Studies Review, Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory, Judicature, Justice System Journal, and Harvard Journal on Legislation.

Keith GillDirector of Athletics

and Recreation

American University named Keith Gill its seventh Director of Athletics and Recreation on June 1, 2007.

As Director of Athletics, Gill oversees the operations of all American University intercollegiate and intramural athletic programs, including more than 250 student-athletes participating in 16 varsity sports, the majority of which compete in the Patriot League Conference.

In three years at American, Gill has helped to lead the athletics department to never before seen successes including back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. Since his arrival Gill has also seen the volleyball team win a record eighth Patriot League Championship, the fi eld hockey team win a record seventh straight Patriot League Championship and the women’s basketball team make three consecutive postseason appearances for the fi rst time in program history. Individually, American has crowned 14 All-Americans over the past three seasons.

The Eagles have fl ourished in the classroom as well under Gill’s guidance as American’s 16 teams have

continued their streak of 20 consecutive semesters with a combined GPA over 3.0. During the 2009-10 academic year, 159 student-athletes were named to the university’s Dean’s List and the department recorded a record 3.37 combined GPA.

In his 15th season at the helm of one of the most successful and enduring programs at American University is Swimming & Diving Head Coach Mark Davin. With over 20 years of experience, Davin has redefi ned success both in and out of the pool at AU.

Davin’s focus on success in the pool is apparent with numerous student-athletes earning all-conference and national awards, including fi nalists at the NCAA’s, the U.S. Olympic Trials and U.S. Nationals. His clear commitment to academics is also a strong thread that runs throughout his program. For the past 29 semesters, his team has been honored as one of the most academically successful programs in all of Division I, earning Academic All-America by the College Swimming Coaches Athletic Association.

The 2009-10 team continued the tradition of success in competition and in the classroom. In the pool, senior Matt Pelletier and junior Dory Isaacs were named to the All-Patriot League First Team while junior Jess Ballance was awarded All-Patriot League Second Team honors. Pelletier set the school record in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 48.89. Isaacs set the meet record in the 100 yard breastroke at the ECAC Championships with a time of 1:02.15.

Academically, the men’s team led the nation in GPA for the third semester in a row, while the women’s team placed fourth in the country. Eight men and 11 women received Dean’s List honors. The Eagles were named to the Collegiate Swim Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) Scholar-Athlete Teams for the 29th consecutive semester with Pelletier receiving an All-Academic Team Honorable Mention. Both the men’s and women’s teams received perfect Academic Progress Rate scores, one of only seven Division I schools to have both teams recognized for APR scores in the top 10 percent of the country.

The 2008-09 campaign was also a successful season both in and out of the pool for Davin’s squad. Three student-athletes were named All-Patriot League - Pelletier, Isaacs and freshman Alexandra Wessel. Isaacs set new AU records in both the 50 free (23.23) and 100 yard breast (1:02.13) during the event and went on to break her own AU record, set in 2008, with a third-place fi nish in the 100 free (50.72).

Out of the pool, the men’s swimming and diving team posted a 3.54 GPA in the spring semester, the highest team grade-point average of all Division I swimming and diving programs in the country. The women’s program placed 14th in the nation with

a 3.44 GPA. Based on their GPAs, both teams were named to the Collegiate Swim Coaches Association of America Scholar-Athlete Teams for the 27th consecutive semester.

In 2007-08, the Eagles earned fi ve All-Patriot League selections, including Isaacs, who set a new school record in the 50 free with a time of 23.79 at the conference meet, and 21 PL Academic Honor Roll nods. The previous season of 2006-07 saw Meghan Thiel continue her conference dominence in the distance freestyle events, capturing her third-consecutive PL Championship in both the 500 free and 1000 free.

The 2005-06 season saw Kaitlin Moughty and Thiel each win conference championships, capping off a season in which each were named to the All-PL First Team and set new school records. Twenty-three Eagles on both the men’s and women’s sides were named to the PL Academic Honor Roll as the team earned yet another Academic All-America nod.During the 2004-05 season, Davin’s swimmers again led the league athletically and academically. Both teams had over 95 percent lifetime best performances at the conference championships. The Patriot League Co-Female Swimmer of the Meet, Thiel, led the women’s team, while PL Male Swimmer of the Year Val Fomenko was the best for the men. Joining Thiel and Fomenko on the PL All Conference Teams were 400 IM Champion Steve Brennan, Kevin Falkenstein, Alex Kinzler, Cami Miller, Moughty and Estebe Salgado.

The men’s and women’s teams also led all PL teams in the classroom, with the highest team GPA for the fall 2004 and spring 2005 semesters. The teams also received CSCAA Team Academic Awards for each semester as both the men and the women again fi nished in the top-10 of all schools in Division I.

The 2003-04 season was another triumphant year for the Eagle men with both Ethan Bassett and Erwan Jeffroy obtaining NCAA qualifying s t a n d a r d s .

Bassett also won the 400 IM, going 1-2 with freshman Brennan. Along with Bassett, Jeffroy and Brennan, Fomenko earned All-PL First Team honors. The Eagle women were led by 1650 freestyle champion Cami Miller along with All-PL First Team teammates Jessica Lidstrom and freshman Moughty.

Academically, the 2003-04 season was another strong showing as both teams again received recognition for being ranked in the top-10 nationally for the fall and spring semesters. Individually, Bassett and Jeffroy received Honorable Mention Academic All-America status.

The season ended with Bassett competing alongside teammates Mark Liscinsky and Dominic Szabo at the US Olympic Trials where Bassett fi nished in seventh place in the 200 breaststroke.

In the fall of 2002, the men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams became the fi rst counterpart teams in modern American University history to achieve the highest team GPA in the athletics department. The men’s team led the way for all AU men’s sports teams while earning the highest team GPA of any Division I swimming and diving team in the country while the women’s team earned 11th place honors. The teams again shined in 2003 with the men fi nishing fourth and the women eighth among all Division I programs.

Individually, Seth Bell earned Verizon Academic All-America Second Team and was joined by Ethan Bassett on the Academic All-District II University Division Team. Lidstrom repeated as the PL Female Swimming & Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year while Bassett and Liscinsky were honored as CSCAA Scholar All-Americans.

During the 2002-03 season, Davin coached the program’s 18th individual All-American when junior Szabo raced to an eighth-place fi nish in the 100 breaststroke at the NCAA Championships in San Antonio, Texas, in a time of 53.77. Szabo’s honor marked the 23rd All-American award garnered in AU’s swimming & diving history and the 33rd

student-athlete from AU to be named All-American.

The 2002-03 season was one of fantastic achievement that was highlighted by an outstanding PL Championship where 12 pool, nine meet, six league and four school records fell.

At the 2002 league championships, the men’s squad set seven new PL records while the women broke two league records of their own. The men’s and women’s teams were academically ranked 11th and 13th, respectively, among NCAA Division I programs and were awarded with Team Academic All-America status.

Davin has earned Coach of the Year honors three times in his career including his fi rst season in the Patriot League. Under the instruction of Davin, the 2000-01 Eagles broke six CAA records, earned 20 CAA Championship titles and boasted fi ve NCAA provisional qualifi ers while the men’s team fi nished a perfect 7-0 season. At the conference championships, the men’s team scored more points than any other team, while the women’s team scored the second most of any other school in the conference.

Davin earned a second consecutive Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Coach of the Year nod and a perfect 7-0 men’s record in 2001. In 2000, AU’s last season as a full competitive member of the CAA, the men’s team made its best showing in the conference since the 1995 season, fi nishing third. The women also celebrated their best fi nish since 1994, fi nishing fi fth.

Before coming to American, Davin spent four years as head coach of the Fort Lauderdale Swim Team, which won the 1994 Summer Nationals, the 1994 U.S. Open and the 1995 Spring Senior Nationals. His collegiate coaching career began at the University of California at Berkeley where he was an assistant for a men’s team which won back-to-back NCAA titles in 1979 and 1980. From there, Davin took the assistant reins for the women’s team at Arizona State, which brought home a fourth-place fi nish at the Collegiate Nationals during the 1980-81 season.

From 1981-90, Davin coached the Swim Devils throughout Arizona, during which time he guided 12 athletes to the Olympic Trials. He was the assistant men’s swimming coach at the University of Pittsburgh from 1990-92 where he helped guide the Panthers to back-to-back Big East titles and top 25 national rankings.

The founder of the Arizona Swimming Coaches Association, Davin is a graduate of Florida State University with a degree in behavioral psychology. He was a member of the Seminole team that captured a pair of National Independent Conference Championships.

Upon graduation, Davin was an assistant coach for the Narcoossee Swim Team in Tallahassee, Fla., before joining the Pleasant Hill Swim Club in Pleasant Hill, Calif.

John Barry, in his fourth year at American, looks to transpose his core diving beliefs of fundamentals, focusing on strong, balanced board-work. That, he believes “is where all great divers begin.”

Barry began his life on the boards in 1970 at the age of seven. During his youth, Coach Barry competed in the Northern Virginia Swimming and Diving League, one of the largest leagues in the country. Throughout his decorated career, he won numerous dual, relay, and divisional titles. In the mid 1980’s, Barry performed in professional diving exhibitions up and down the East Coast of North America, from Largo, Maryland up to Toronto, Canada. Barry’s travels as a competitive diver allowed him to absorb the fi ner points of diving and coaching while working along side some of the great competitive and acrobatic divers of the day.

After a long break from the diving scene while starting a family and working as a Service Manager for Cannon USA, Barry returned to his diving roots in Arlington, Virginia.

Aside from his work at AU, Barry coaches several divers competing at the National level under Dominion Dive Club, a U.S. Diving team in Fairfax, Virginia. He also has a “for fun/non-competitive” program in the winter, just to keep interested young divers wet during the colder months. During the summer months, Barry draws some 70 young divers to his program at Overlee Swim Club. He also coaches at an Arlington Public Middle and High School, where his son and daughter now compete.

Former Eagle standout Mark Liscinsky is in his fi fth season as head assistant coach for the 2009-10 year.

Recently, Mark has excelled in his work with the sprinters, as student-athlete Matt Pelletier set school records in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke. Mark has implemented new training techniques that emphasize breath control and several of the sprinters continue to rise in the top-10 rankings for the team.

In 2007-08, Liscinsky’s work with the team’s sprinters paid off as one of his student-athletes swam the second fastest time in school history in the 50 freestyle and earned a U.S. National qualifying time in the event. Additionally, Liscinky’s work with the IM’ers showed dividends as Kaitlin Moughty swam a career best in the 200 and established a new AU school record in the 400.

Both athletically and academically talented, Liscinsky set AU and conference records in the 100 and 200 freestyle, the 100 and 200 backstroke and the 200 IM. In his senior year he qualifi ed for the NCAA’s in the 100 and 200 freestyle, 200 backstroke and 200 IM while earning CSCAA Academic All-America honors. As a Freshman, Liscinsky was named Rookie of the Meet and in both his junior and senior seasons was awarded the Most Outstanding Athlete in the conference. Liscinsky completed his career having set six American University records including the 100 freestyle (44.61), 200 freestyle (1:36.75), 100 backstroke (49.87), 200 backstroke (1:45.85), 100 IM (short course meters) (57.72) and 200 IM (1:47.20). Additionally, Liscinsky is ranked in the all-time top-ten list in the 50 and 500 freestyle, the 100 and 200 breaststroke, the 200 butterfl y and the 400 IM.

Liscinsky has also been a multiple fi nalist at the U.S. Senior Nationals, was a member of the 2003 U.S. World University Games team that competed in Korea and was a 2000 and 2004 US Olympic Trials Qualifi er. In addition to coaching at AU, Liscinsky is in his second year as the head coach at the Washington Golf and Country Club. Liscinsky has also coached with both the Curl Burke Swim Club and the Arlington Aquatic Club.

2009-10 Review

Three AU swimmers were named to All-Patriot League in 2009-10. Matt Pelletier and Dory Isaacs were honored to the All-Patriot League First Team, while Jess Ballance was named to the All-Patriot League Second Team. For Isaacs, the selection was the third straight of her career.

Pelletier captured the Patriot League Championship in the 100 backstroke with a time of 49.61. He set two school records in the 50 free (20.49) and 100 back (48.89) during the season.

In addition to her Patriot League success, Isaacs set a new school record in the 200 IM (2:03.74). She also captured the ECAC Championships in the 100 breaststroke with an all-time meet best of 1:02.15.

Both the men’s and women’s teams were recognized by the NCAA for earning perfect Academic Progress Rate (APR) scores of 1,000. The APR provides a real-time look at a team’s academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress a team’s student-athletes. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation, and is a key measurement of each team’s academic performance.

AU was one of seven swimming and diving programs in the country to earn APR scores in top 10 percent on both men’s and women’s side.

For the 29th consecutive semester in the spring 2010 term, both the men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams were named CSCAA Scholar-Athlete Teams. In order to earn the honor, a team must have a 3.0 team GPA or higher in that given semester.

Additionally, 32 members of the squads were named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll in the spring 2010 term.
