Boston College proudly dedicates this media guide in memory of Harold Vincent Connolly.Boston College alumnus Harold Vincent Connolly, former executive director of the Special Olympics and one of the most prolific figures in the history of hammer throwing, passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 18., 2010, at 79 years young.A native of Brighton, Mass., Connolly won 12 national titles in the hammer throw as an Eagle. Two years after his graduation in 1953, he be-came the first American to surpass the 200-foot mark in the event and made an unlikely rise to international fame when he won the gold medal in the hammer throw competition at the Melbourne Olympic Games a year later. The four-time Olympian held the world record in the event from Nov. 2, 1956 until Sept. 4, 1965, progressing the mark on six different occasions. Connolly reigned as the U.S. Track and Field As-sociation champion in the event for seven consecutive years from 1955-61 and reclaimed the crown in 1964 and 1965. He is the last American to win gold in the hammer throw and just one of two to medal in the event in the past 54 years. An original member of the Boston College Hall of Fame, Connolly suffered from severe nerve paralysis in his left arm at the time of his birth. He went through 11 years of physical therapy to be able to touch the fingers in his left hand with his thumb. Determined to be an athlete, Connolly tried foot-ball, baseball and track, until eventually becoming a hammer thrower un-der Eagles’ head coach Bill Gilligan. With Gilligan’s guidance, the Brighton native went on to claim nine outdoor championships and three indoor titles in the hammer throw. After graduation, he became a teacher and coach in Boston and Los Angeles. In 1988, he was hand-picked by Sargent and Eunice Kennedy Shriver to become the Director of the U.S. Programs for the Special Olympics International. He served the department until 1999. Connolly was immortalized with a statue in front of William Howard Taft School in Brighton, Mass. in 2005.

running in boston

Various cities across the country may attempt to claim status as America’s running capital, but no city can rival the diversity and excitement of run-ning in Boston. Through the Boston Commons, Franklin Park and the miles of pathways along the Charles River, runners in Boston can find anything to suit their needs.

On any given day, Boston running can be reflected in the masses of athletes training on Common-wealth Avenue, to the seclusion and serenity that come from running through the beautiful parks and pathways throughout the city. As the academic year begins at Boston College, so do the prepara-tions of thousands of running enthusiasts as they prepare for the Boston Marathon.

By the spring, Boston College – perched atop “Heartbreak Hill” – buzzes with anticipation for the world’s finest marathon. Boston College is within easy access of the city and some of the best indoor track and field complexes in the country. Alterna-tively, within minutes of the opposite direction, BC athletes can be running on endless, soft trails such as those found at Walden Pond.

It is this unique access to both the city and the countryside that really sets Boston College apart from any other school. We invite you to come and join in this experience, to live, to study and to run!

Sincerely,Matthew KerrDirector of Men’s Cross Country/Track & Field

Matt Kerr begins his third year as the Director of Men’s Cross Country and Track and Field at Boston College. Kerr was named to his current role in 2008 after serv-ing as the assistant coach for the men’s and women’s programs at Wake Forest for four years.

In the first two years under Kerr’s guidance, Boston College has garnered 49 All-ACC Academic Honor Roll distinctions, five All-ACC Academic Team members, been recognized as the ACC Performer of the Week on three occasions and made one appearance on an ACC All-Conference team.In his first season at the helm of BC, Kerr’s impact was felt immediately. During the 2008 outdoor track season, he led Dave Emerson to a New England Championship in the 10,000m and coached Jeff Smith to a school record in the 100m dash.In the fall of 2008, with Kerr’s tutelage, standout Timothy Ritchie earned a pair of ACC Cross Country Performer of the Week honors and sophomore Theodore Doyle added one of his own. Kerr led Ritchie to a second place finish at ACCs - BC’s all-time best individual performance - with the Eagles taking sixth place for their highest team finish since joining the conference in 2005. Kerr also coached Ritchie to a New England Cross Country Championship that year. The BC star took seventh place at the NCAA Northeast Regional and went on to make his first appearance at the NCAA Cross Country Championship, finishing No. 62.During the 2009 indoor track season, Kerr brought continued recognition to Bos-ton College. At the 2009 ACC Indoor Championship, Ritchie placed sixth in the 5000m. The senior took third in the same event at the conference championship, the highest-ever individual placing by an Eagle at the meet. Earlier in the season, BC’s captain busted out two NCAA Regional qualifying times in the 5000m, one of which was a 14:02.59 performance at the ICAAAA meet. After making the transition outside, Kerr guided Ritchie to qualify for the NCAA pre-liminary round in the 5000m by posting a time of 14:03.21. With Kerr at the helm, the Eagles earned their first podium finish in several decades at the New England Track and Field Championships, having grabbed third place behind Matt Adetula’s championship in the triple jump.

The 2010 Men’s Cross Country team took big strides in the fall campaign. As a unit, the Eagles improved their team total in seven of eight meets contested and dropped personal records or seasons-bests on 44 occasions. The Eagles opened the season as host of the Boston College Invitational, using the meet to display the talents of their youth filled lineup. In their first collegiate race, freshman Joseph Mc-Conaughy and Anthony Bellitti stepped up to led BC to a string of personal records on opening day.Two weeks later, senior Michael Keebler turned in an 11th place finish at the Williamstown College Invitational. His showing was BC’s lowest placing of the season and guided the squad to its lowest team total on the year – sixth place at 145 points. The New England Championship held on Oct. 9 featured seven nationally-ranked and 21 regionally-ranked teams. The com-petition that day also marked the return of standout Louis Se-rafini, who led the Eagles with a 32nd place finish on a time of 25:27 – one second shy of his PR. Not to be out done, junior Ian Thomas, as well as sophomores Jordan Hamm and Danny Kane posted PRs to help deliver Boston College’s best show-ing at the meet in three seasons. The times continued to drop when BC made the trip to the Princeton Invitational on Oct. 16. Serafini led the way again - as he would continue to do throughout the season – this time setting a PR of 25:08.40. At the meet, Hamm emerged as Boston College’s number two runner. A total of eight Eagles lowered their standard times for their career or season and BC improved its team standing over the previous year once more.

At the Mayor’s Cup, graduate student Cory Ahern ran his fast-est time in over three seasons to led BC with a 46th place finish. Sophomores Akash Chougule and John Shannon were solid second and third runners on the day. In addition to Chou-gule and Shannon’s PRs, classmate Nahed Lakkis helped pace freshmen Thomas Jennings and Michael Mahoney to their personal bests. However, the fastest Eagle of the meet was assistant coach Tim Ritchie, who claimed sixth place as a member of the Boston Athletic Association.Franklin Park was abuzz once more as Boston College host-ed the ACC Championship for the first time since joining the conference in 2005. The sophomore class again led BC to a greater team finish – ninth place - than the previous year and three quarters of the lineup pushed themselves harder than they had in the previous meets. Serafini lowered his PR for the second consecutive meet for 35th place and was followed in by Kane and Hamm once more. Upperclassmen Ian Thomas – narrowly missed a PR – and Ted Doyle filled in the score card for the Eagles. The NCAA Northeast Regional tested the men’s side at the 10 kilometer distance for the first time all season. Unphased by the challenge, the entire seven man lineup - consisting of Serafini, Kane, Doyle, Keebler, Hamm, Hughes and Thomas - notched personal records and the team posted a 19th place finish on 487 points – eights spots and 224 fewer marks than in 2009.The IC4A Championship was the final meet of the season for the Eagles, who utilized the opportunity to improve one final time with a 14th place team finish on 344 points.

1949-53 Hammer Throw )

Arguably one of the best athletes to call Boston Col-lege home, Harold Connolly won 12 national titles

as an Eagle, including nine in the hammer throw and three in the indoor 35-lb. weight throw. Connolly was the first Boston College student-athlete to reach the All-American level in the hammer throw. As a collegian, he also was named to All-New England and All-East teams. After departing from the Heights in 1952, he became the first American to throw over 200 feet at 201-5.0 ft and later set a world record of 224-10.0 ft. Connolly went on to win the gold medal in the hammer throw at the 1956 Melbourne Olym-pic Games and reigned as U.S. Track and Field champion in the event for seven straight years. After he retired from competition, he became the di-rector of the U.S. Chapters Programs where he saw the management of the Special Olympics American franchises. A statue honoring Connolly sits at the intersection of Warren and Cambridge Streets on the front of lawn of William Howard Taft School in Brighton, Mass.

In 1984, John Clopeck became the first Boston Col-lege student-athlete to earn All-America status in cross country. His ’84 campaign was instrumental in guiding the Eagles to their first and only ap-pearance in the national meet, where they finished in 11th place. On the track that year, he set school records in the 10,000m (30:44) and five-mile (24:06) competitions to lead Boston College to Greater and New England Championships. The following XC season, Clopeck went on to become the first BC student-athlete to win the BIG EAST individual title, en route to collecting All-BIG EAST, All-New England and All-East Region honors. The indoor season brought continued success for the BC standout, setting marks in five events: 1,500m (3:47), 3,000m (8:05), two-mile (8:46.3) and 5,000m (14:11.3) and as a member of the 4xMile Relay team (17:15). In 1986, he established yet another record in the 5,000m (13:53.7) at the pres-tigious Penn Relays. As of the 2010-11 season, both of Clopeck’s 5,000m records remain intact.

1963 Hammer Throw

NCAA Champion)

George Desnoyers was a versatile and talented athlete during his time at Boston College. In addition to being a reckoning force in the hammer throw, he brought success to the Maroon and Gold in the discus, high jump, javelin, pole vault, shot put and sprinting events. At the 1962 New England Championships, Desnoyers claimed both the hammer throw and discus wreaths to led BC to its first regional title in 29 years. His record hammer toss of 59.13m (194-1.5 ft.) at the meet remained untouched for three seasons and ranks as the eighth longest throw in BC history as of 2010-11. That season he went on to collect All-American recognition in the hammer throw. In 1963, Desnoyers concluded his collegiate career as NCAA Hammer Throw Champion.

performances on the world stage of track and field. In 1920, Driscoll became the first All-American runner at BC following a world record performance in the indoor quarter-mile. Four years later, he would be part of the first contingent of Eagles to participate in the Paris Olympic Games. Throughout his time at the Heights, Driscoll captured 440-yd. dash titles at the New England Championship, IC4A Championship and the Eastern Regional meets.

As an Eagle, he racked up points in the discus, hammer throw, shot put and weight throw events. In 1965, he returned the NCAA Hammer Throw Championship to Chestnut Hill, Mass. where it would remain for two years. During Fiore’s final indoor campaign, he recorded a mark of 18.90m (62-6.5 ft.) in the 35-lb. weight throw to set a school standard that went unmatched for over 20 years. His days wearing Maroon and Gold in the circle were capped with a repeat as NCAA Hammer Throw Champion in 1966. Fiore’s distance of 62.27m (201-3.5 ft.) surpassed former teammate George Desnoyer’s school record and was upheld until the 1985 season.

At the 1994 BIG EAST Cross Country Champion-ship, Christopher Georgules turned a time of 24:34. The run was only the third sub-25:00.0 mark in the history of Boston College on its home course and would go unmatched for six years. That indoor season, Geor-gules would run the first-and-only sub-8 minute 3,000m time in BC history (7:59.27) en route to earning his first All-American honor in the 3,000m competition. In 1995, became the first Eagle cross country athlete to qualify for the NCAA Championship in three years and went on to collect his only All-American recognition in the sport. Georgules continued his excellence on track, running the third fastest 5,000m in school history (14:18.99), before concluding his BC career as an All-American in the 3,000m.

Boston College was founded in 1863 by the Society of Jesus to serve the sons of Boston’s Irish immigrants. It was the first institution of higher edu-cation to be founded in the city of Boston. Today, it is one of the foremost universities in the nation, with a coeducational enrollment of 14,500 un-dergraduate and graduate students. Boston College has drawn students from all 50 states and more than 80 countries.

Boston College has grown not just in size, but also in stature and di-versity. Today, it is ranked among the top 34 national universities by US News & World Report. Its Graduate School of Social Work is listed among the nation’s top 15, also by US News, while the graduate pro-grams of its Lynch School of Education are among the top 20 and its Connell School of Nursing and Law School are among the top 30. In addition, eight undergraduate programs of the Carroll School of Manage-ment placed among the top 10 in the nation according to BusinessWeek, with accounting placing first in its category. Boston College is among the nation’s most selective universities, with nearly 30,000 applications received for its 2,250-member Class of 2013, and is numbered among the top American private research universities.

After more than a century of growth and evolution, Boston College holds fast to the ideals that inspired its Jesuit founders. The University today remains focused on its mission of helping students to develop their minds and talents while providing them with the motivation and compassion to use those talents in the service of others.“Deeply rooted in its Catholic and Jesuit origins, Boston College offers an education that is distinctive in spirit and content, that is doubly rich with the best of human thought and with the profound insights of faith,” writes Reverend William P. Leahy, SJ, who assumed the presidency of Boston College in 1996. “We believe that Boston College provides a transform-ing experience for young men and women.”

A continued expression of this philosophy, based on the Jesuit principle of cura personalis, or care for the individual, is the faculty’s dedication to teaching. BC faculty members have been honored for their teaching by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Education, while the University’s overall commitment to teaching has been ranked among the nation’s top 20, also by US News & World Report.

KBOSTON COLLEGE

A Boston College education focuses not only on intellectual develop-ment, but also on personal, spiritual and physical development. Students are asked to use their abilities, education and acquired skills to help oth-ers in need, whether in Boston or Belize. Each year, more than 5,000 undergraduates give some 375,000 hours of community service in the Boston area, while more than 650 students trade vacation for service during Spring Break. Nearly 2,000 students take part in retreats and spiritual formation activities annually.

Today, the Boston College motto “ever to excel” also extends to a broad array of extracurricular activities and opportunities ranging from sports to the arts. Athletics is integral to the University’s focus on the development of the whole person in body as well as in mind and spirit. BC offers 31 men’s and women’s varsity sports, all of which compete at the NCAA Division I level, and annually has one of the highest gradu-ation rates in Division IA. BC offers a wide variety of resources that enrich intellectual and cultural life beyond the campus gates. Among these are the Jesuit Institute; Cen-ter for Ignatian Spirituality; Center for Catholic Education; Church in the 21st Century Center; Boisi Center for Religion and American Public Life; Center for Human Rights and International Justice; Center for Christian-Jewish Learning; Winston Center for Leadership and Ethics; Center on Wealth and Philanthropy; Center for Retirement Research; Sloan Center on Aging and Work; Center for the Study of Testing, Evaluation and Edu-cational Policy; TIMSS and PIRLS International Study Center; Center for International Higher Education; Burns Library of Rare Books and Special Collections; Robsham Theater Arts Center; McMullen Museum of Art; Center for Child, Family and Community Partnerships; Center for Corpo-rate Citizenship; Center for Work and Family; Center for Irish Programs; Urban Ecology Institute and Weston Observatory.

Franklin Park Cross Country Course

When the city of Boston was awarded the honor of hosting the1992 International Association of Athlet-ics Federations (IAAF) Cross Country Championship, it was in need of a world-class facility. At that time, Franklin Park was selected to have a cross country specific course designed on its premises. Although a special 12.5 kilometer course was implemented for the competition, the park features courses ranging from 5-, 6-, 8-and-10-kilometer distances. Each lay-out typically includes variations of three major compo-nents, the stadium loop – a journey around the back of White Stadium - Bear Cage Hill - elevating and descending athletes to 99m (194ft.) - and the Wilder-ness, which crosses into the wooded area of the park and follows a twisting path through the trees.

The course sits on a partially-wooded 527-acre park in the Jamaica Plain and Roxbury neighborhoods of Boston. Although the park boasts other athletic fa-cilities such as a golf course, tennis courts, baseball fields and basketball courts, it is the course designed primarily for international running competition that is utilized most often. In addition to hosting all Boston College home meets, the Boston Athletic Association, the NCAA and numerous organizations throughout New England all make use of the competitively beau-tiful course that is Franklin Park.

KFranklin Park Cross Country CourseThe park was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, an American journalist and father of landscape archi-tecture, in the 19th century and named for Boston-born patriot Benjamin Franklin. It is the largest and final component of Boston’s famed Emerald Necklace – the 1,100-acres of parks linked by parkways and waterways in the city – developed by Olmstead. Two years prior to the parks formation, American transcen-dentalist Ralph Waldo Emerson lived on the grounds on what is now known as “Schoolmaster Hill”.

PRESIDENTWilliam P. Leahy, S.J. became the 25th presi-dent of Boston College on July 31, 1996. Born in Omaha, he grew up on his family’s farm near Imogene, Iowa. After one year of college at Creighton University, he entered the Wisconsin Province of the Society of Jesus in 1967. He re-ceived a bachelor’s de-gree in philosophy and a master’s degree in Unit-ed States history from

Saint Louis University in 1972 and 1975, respectively. Between 1975 and 1979, he studied theology at the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, California, earning a master’s degree in divinity and a master’s degree in sacred theology while there. Ordained a priest in 1978, he completed doctoral studies in United States history at Stanford University in 1985.

Father Leahy joined the department of history at Marquette University in 1985 and became a tenured associate professor there six years later. In July 1991, he was named executive vice president at Marquette, where he served until being named president of Boston College in 1996.

During his years at Boston College, Father Leahy has presided over an institution that has solidified its position among the nation’s best and

most selective national universities. Since 1996, BC’s endowment, spon-sored research grants and student financial aid have doubled, and the percentage of student applicants accepted has fallen from 41 percent to 27 percent, while SAT scores have risen by more than 130 points. In ad-dition, 100 full-time faculty members have been added, minority student enrollment in undergraduate programs has climbed from 18 percent to 26 percent and annual cash gifts to the University have increased from $24 million to $95 million.

During his presidency, undergraduate applications to Boston College have grown from 16,500 to 30,000, making BC the fifth most- applied to private university in the United States. Currently, the University en-rolls students from all 50 states and 80 countries, and its undergradu-ates have earned more than 250 prestigious fellowships, including two Rhodes Scholarships. Student-athletes at BC succeed in balancing the demands of academics and athletics, and BC consistently ranks among those universities with the highest NCAA graduation rates.

Most recently, the Boston College community has been engaged in a comprehensive assessment and planning effort that resulted in a 10-year Strategic Plan. This plan will build on Boston College’s strengths and ac-complishments of the past and will focus additional resources on under-graduate liberal arts education and formation, as well as integrated science research and teaching. The University also intends to increasingly apply the strengths of its professional schools to resolving critical societal issues, and foster even more international links. In addition, Boston College in-tends to remain faithful to its Jesuit, Catholic heritage and to become the leading Catholic university and theological center in the world.

KDirector of athletics

Since Gene DeFilippo became Director of Athlet-ics in September of 1997, he has led the BC athletics program to an unprecedented period of innovation, growth, fundraising, athletic and academic success. He also led the program through one of the most sig-nificant periods in its history as it transitioned to full membership in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Under DeFilippo’s leadership, Boston College stu-dent-athletes’ achievements in the classroom have become an immense source of pride for the Univer-sity and its supporters. Twenty-one Boston College sports teams received a perfect Graduation Success Rate score of 100, according to data released by the NCAA last November. That figure represents the most teams with a perfect 100 score of any Division I intercollegiate athletics program in the country. Last year, 379 BC student-athletes maintained a grade point average of 3.0 or better, earning the Athletic Director’s Award for Academic Excellence. BC’s graduation rate for all student-athletes has consis-tently ranked in the nation’s top ten. DeFilippo initiated an impressive overhaul of BC’s athletics facilities that includes new football practice facilities, a total renovation of Conte Forum, includ-ing a new sound system, floor and video boards, new soccer, field hockey and lacrosse facilities on the Newton campus, new Field Turf for Alumni Sta-dium, and an air-inflated bubble to cover the stadium turf to provide an indoor practice facility for all sports during the winter months. DeFilippo was instrumental in raising money to build the privately funded $27 million, 72,000-square-foot Yawkey Athletics Center, which houses the football program, the Office of Learning Resources for Student-Athletes, and a large function area for general use. After football moved into the Yawkey Center, BC undertook a multi-million dollar renova-tion Conte Forum to provide additional locker room and office space for many of BC’s 31 varsity sports.

DeFilippo renamed the Athletics Association’s fundraising arm (formerly Blue Chips) in honor of longtime Athletics Director Bill Flynn. Alumni, parents and friends of Boston College contributed more than $27 million during the past year (this total includes an extraordinary payment towards a capital project). The 4,600 donors to the Flynn Fund prove that there is strength in numbers; nearly 700 alumni, parents and friends have given to BC Athletics for at least 10 consecutive years. Anne and Gene DeFilippo cemented their com-mitment to Boston College by announcing their pledge of $100,000 to endow a scholarship. The scholarship will be awarded annually to a female student-athlete who demonstrates outstanding academic achievement and financial need. In athletics competition, DeFilippo has over-seen some of the most successful seasons in Boston College Athletics history. During the 2009-10 season, the football team appeared in a school-record 11th consecutive bowl game and the men’s ice hockey team captured its fourth national championship (its third since 2001). In 2008, the men’s soccer team captured both the ACC regular-season and tournament champion-ships and entered the NCAA Men’s Soccer Tour-nament as the overall No. 1 seed.

From 1993-97, DeFilippo served as director of athletics at Villanova University. He served as Associated Director of Athletics at the University of Kentucky from 1987-93, Director of Athletics at the University of South Carolina-Spartanburg from 1984-87 and Director of Administrative Ser-vices at Vanderbilt University from 1983-84. His coaching experience includes three years as offensive backfield coach at Vanderbilt (1980-82), which included the 1982 Hall of Fame Bowl. From 1975-79, he was offensive coordinator at Youngstown State University, during which time the team won two consecutive Mid-Continent Conference championships, 1978-79. In 1973-74, he was graduate assistant football coach for the University of Tennessee, coaching in the 1973 Gator Bowl and 1974 Liberty Bowl. A 1973 graduate of Springfield College with a Bachelor of Science degree, DeFilippo earned three varsity letters as a quarterback in football during his undergraduate career. He received a master’s degree in educational administration from the University of Tennessee in 1974. DeFilippo and his wife, Anne, are the parents of three children – Christine Eldred (married to Matt Eldred), John and Mary.

The Tradition

Consistency. It is the mark of true excellence in any endeavor. However, in today’s intercollegiate athletics, competition has become so balanced and so competitive that it is virtually im-possible to maintain a high level of consistency. Yet the Atlantic Coast Conference has defied the odds. Now in its 57th year of competition, the ACC has long enjoyed the reputation as one of the strongest and most competitive in-tercollegiate conferences in the nation. And that is not mere conjecture, the numbers support it. Since the league’s inception in 1953, ACC schools have cap-tured 105 national championships, including 56 in women’s competition and 49 in men’s. In addition, NCAA individual titles have gone to ACC student-athletes 139 times in men’s competition and 86 times in women’s action.

THE CHAMPIONSHIPS

The conference will conduct championship competition in 25 sports during the 2010-11 academic year - 12 for men and 13 for women. The first ACC championship was held in swimming on Febru-ary 25, 1954. The conference did not conduct championships in cross country, wrestling or tennis during the first year. The 12 sports for men include football, cross country, soc-cer, basketball, swimming, indoor and outdoor track, wres-tling, baseball, tennis, golf and lacrosse. Fencing, which was started in 1971, was discontinued in 1981. Women’s sports were initiated in 1977 with the first champi-onship meet being held in tennis at Wake Forest University. Championships for women are currently conducted in cross country, volleyball, field hockey, soccer, basket-ball, swimming, indoor and outdoor track, tennis, golf, lacrosse, softball and rowing.

A History

The Atlantic Coast Conference was founded on May 8, 1953, at the Sedgefield Inn near Greensboro, N.C., with seven charter members - Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest - drawing up the conference by-laws.The withdrawal of seven schools from the Southern Confer-ence came early on the morning of May 8, 1953, during the Southern Conference’s annual spring meeting. On June 14, 1953, the seven members met in Raleigh, N.C., where a set of bylaws was adopted and the name became officially the Atlantic Coast Conference.Suggestions from fans for the name of the new conference appeared in the region’s newspapers prior to the meeting in Raleigh. Some of the names suggested were: Dixie, Mid South, Mid Atlantic, East Coast, Seaboard, Colonial, Tobac-co, Blue-Gray, Piedmont, Southern Seven and the Shoreline. Duke’s Eddie Cameron recommended that the name of the conference be the Atlantic Coast Conference, and the motion was passed unanimously. The meeting concluded with each member institution assessed $200.00 to pay for conference expenses. On December 4, 1953, conference officials met again at Sedgefield and officially admitted the University of Virginia as the league’s eighth member. The first, and only, withdrawal of a school from the ACC came on June 30, 1971, when the University of South Carolina tendered its resignation. The ACC operated with seven members until April 3, 1978, when the Georgia Institute of Technology was admitted. The Atlanta school had withdrawn from the Southeastern Conference in January of 1964.The ACC expanded to nine members on July 1, 1991, with the addition of Florida State University. The conference expanded to 11 members on July 1, 2004, with the addition of the University of Miami and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. On October 17, 2003, Boston College accepted an invitation to become the league’s 12th member starting July 1, 2005.
