The first two seasons of the Don Verlin era of Idaho men’s basketball have featured a number of program firsts, significant accomplishments and team and individual honors. The team went to and won its first postseason game in nearly three decades, beat a ranked team for the first time in 28 years, took three out of four matchups with rival Boise State and earned more victories (32) than the previous four seasons combined.

The plan for year three? Keep climbing the mountain.

The loss of the most successful two-year Idaho group in nearly 20 years makes the 2010-11 season a bit of an unknown for Idaho fans. The team returns just 26.5 percent of its scoring and 36.1 percent of its rebounding from a year ago, but where some might see gaps, Verlin and the Vandals see opportunity.

“Any time you have a graduation and seniors leave, there are opportunities for other guys who have put in the time,” Verlin said. “Our guys are extremely excited about the coming year and they should be. They have opportunities to go out and play and make their mark on Vandal basketball.”

It will be up to the team’s seven returners and six newcomers to improve upon the foundation that the class of 2010 built. While the returners only combined to start 31 games last season and averaged just a collective 19.4 points per game, Verlin said the most important thing isn’t for one or two players to try to be individual stars, it’s about creating a strong, cohesive unit.

“We might not be as talented or athletic as we were a year ago, but we’re a more skilled team overall. We have a number of guys who can shoot it, pass it, handle it. Our skill level as a whole is a lot better than it was the last two years.

“We have to develop some team leaders. This team has to become a team that plays with purpose and that has to be developed among the team, which is why I’m so happy with where we are this summer because we’ve been together a couple weeks and we’re starting to look like a team that can play with some purpose.”

The low post should be an area of strength for Idaho in 2010-11, as the team returns 26-game starter Luiz Toledo, a 6-8 junior, and 6-10 sophomore Kyle Barone, who played in 31 games as a freshman. Fifth-year senior Brandon Wiley returns after sitting out 2009-10 with a back injury.

Toledo was Idaho’s fifth-leading scorer last season with 7.4 points per game. His long reach and soft touch around the basket were a big reason why he led the Western Athletic Conference with a 63.8 percent field goal clip. Barone started twice and played in all 31 games last season as a redshirt freshman. He averaged 5.0 points and 4.1 rebounds and came on strongly late in the year. Wiley should provide an extra boost, as he was a key component of Idaho’s CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament appearance in 2008-09 in averaging 8.2 points and a team-leading 5.6 rebounds per game and blocking 26 shots.

20�0-�� Season Outlook


Junior Renado Parker will add some muscle to the front court. The 6-6, 255-pound forward from North Idaho College was an efficient scorer and a solid defender for the nation’s sixth-ranked junior college. A 2009 NJCAA First-Team All-American as a freshman, Parker has a nose for the basket and a powerful build to fight for rebounds against physical WAC opponents. Redshirt freshman Joe Kammerer will also factor into the equation. The 6-9, 241-pound center sat out the 2009-10 season to add strength and to polish his game and he should push the returners for playing time early on.

Senior Shawn Henderson leads a very athletic group of wing players for Idaho. Henderson, a 6-3, 180-pound guard, broke the starting lineup in the team’s final two games of the year and made the most of his chances. In the final five games of the season, he averaged 7.8 points, 4.0 rebounds and shot 41.7 percent from the floor. Fellow senior Jeff Ledbetter is a 6-3, 195-pound guard with a sweet shot from distance, as well as the strength to take it to the basket through traffic. He scored 16 points in the season opener at Utah and shot 33.8 percent from long range

during the season.

Freshmen Stephen Madison and Matt Borton, both of whom were prolific high school scorers, bring the versatility to knock down a jumper from long range or to finish around the basket. Both also come with quality pedigree. Madison played for a Jefferson High School team that won an Oregon state title and sent four players to the NCAA Division I level, while Borton spent last season at the Impact Basketball Academy in Las Vegas, Nev., competing against the top prep schools in the nation. Idell Bell, Parker’s teammate at North Idaho College, gives Idaho another quick, athletic scorer on the perimeter. The 6-2, 170-pound junior averaged 20.6 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.1 assists at Brevard (FL) Community College as a freshman.

The task of replacing the departed Mac Hopson, Idaho’s No. 2 all-time assist leader, will be difficult, but three Vandals – one returner and two newcomers – are up to the challenge. Junior Landon Tatum has the leg up after redshirting the 2009-10 season at Idaho, but freshman Gary Winston comes in as one of the premier guard prospects in the Northwest and junior Deremy Geiger was a very productive player at Grayson (TX) County College.

Tatum helped lead South Plains College to an NJCAA national title in 2008 and was also an all-state honoree in Texas during his prep career at San Antonio’s O’Connor High School. He has the added advantage of going up against Idaho’s talented backcourt players every day in practice last season. Winston drew accolades for his play at both ends of the floor last year for Walla Walla High School as the Big 9 Cascade Division Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year. He also drew Division I recruiting interest as a football player. Geiger was the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference Player of the Year last season after averaging 18.5 points, 2.6 rebounds, 1.8 assists and shooting 51.8 percent from the floor. He averaged 25.0 points, 6.1 assists and 3.4 rebounds as a high school senior. All three players have the ability to score in the paint, knock down jumpers and create opportunities for teammates, as well as a knack for gritty, man-to-man defense.

““We’ve got a lot of new faces, we’re extremely young and extremely inexperienced,” Verlin said. “We’re going to have to make up for that with good chemistry and by getting guys to play as hard as they can on every possession. Our focus as coaches this season is going to be on getting our guys a little better every day.”

Starting League Play The Right WayWith its 59-52 win at Hawaiì, Idaho won its second-straight Western Athletic Conference opener. The Vandals are now 2-3 all-time in WAC openers, with both wins coming under Don Verlin. Even more impressive is that the two conference-opening wins came in road games. Last year, the Vandals opened with a 78-73 win at Nevada.

�,200 Wins AchievedWith its 79-55 win at Boise State on Feb. 6, Idaho earned the 1,200th victory in program history. Idaho is in its 105th season of play and holds an all-time record of 1,204-1,354 (.471).

Playing Stingy DefenseIn the first two seasons under head coach Don Verlin, the Idaho men have held their opponents below 60 points 17 times. That’s equal to the number of times the team achieved that defensive feat in the previous four seasons combined. The Vandals are 16-1 under Verlin when holding opponents below 60 points.

A Pretty Big WinIdaho’s 79-55 victory over Boise State on Feb. 6 was the team’s second-biggest win over its rival. The 24-point margin is the largest for Idaho in a road game in the series and is the second-largest overall behind the 1982 team’s 32-point win (91-59) in Moscow on Jan. 20, 1982. It was also Idaho’s biggest road win overall since the Vandals took down Cal Poly by a 101-75 margin on Jan. 9, 1999. The 46-15 halftime advantage Idaho held against Boise State on Feb. 6 is the team’s largest against a WAC opponent since joining the league in 2005-06.

A New Level of EfficiencySophomore forward Luiz Toledo hit eight of his nine attempts for a sparkling .889 field goal percentage in the 74-59 win over Fresno State on Jan. 28. The effort is the top single-game field goal performance for the team and the Western Athletic Conference so far this year. Toledo led the conference with a .638 percentage from the floor, which ranks as the second-best individual field goal percentage in school history and the seventh-best in WAC

history.

A Hot StartThe team’s 5-2 start to the 2009-10 season was its best after seven games since 1989-90, when the Vandals also started 5-2. That team went on to finish 25-6, win the Big Sky regular-season and tournament titles and face Louisville in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

A Long-Range StreakIdaho has made at least one 3-point field goal in 374 consecutive games. The last time Idaho failed to record a 3-pointer was Feb. 27, 1997 vs. Long Beach State. The streak includes 2,195 made 3-pointers and 141 games of seven or more made 3-point shots.

A High-Ranking WinIdaho’s 68-48 win over #25 Portland on Dec. 3 marked the first Vandal victory over a ranked opponent since March 14, 1982, when the Vandals took down #16 Iowa, 69-67 in overtime, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. The last time Idaho beat a ranked team during the regular season was also in 1981-82, when the Vandals beat #15 Oregon State at the Far West Classic in Portland, Ore., by a 71-49 margin on Dec. 28, 1981.

Working on the BoardsLast year, Idaho averaged a meager 30.4 rebounds per game, a total that rated dead-last in the WAC. So far this season, the Vandals are grabbing an average of 34.6 boards through to rate eighth among WAC squads, but they’re limiting opponents to just 33.4 boards per contest, the third-lowest average in the WAC, for a +1.2 margin. The Vandals ranked last in the WAC last year in rebounding margin at -3.5.

Owning the PerimeterIdaho entered the season with a highly-touted back court, it did not disappoint — offensively or defensively. In 2009-10, Idaho rated third in the WAC and 39nd in the NCAA with a .377 percentage from 3-point range, while allowing its opponents to just a .352 clip, which was fourth-best in the conference.

Playing the PercentagesIdaho is third the WAC in field goal percentage (.464) and fifth in field goal percentage defense (.444). In 2009-10, seven of the team’s 11 active players shot .400 or better from the field, while three players hit .500 or better.

A Road Less TraveledIdaho’s 94-87 win over Utah gave the Vandals their first season-opening win in a true road game since 2002, when Idaho beat Oregon State 76-73 in Corvallis.

Playing From AheadIdaho held halftime leads in 16 of its 31 games in 2009-10. Additionally, the Vandals led from start to finish five times.

A Tough TestIdaho opened its season with two of its first three games against 2009 NCAA Tournament teams. Utah was a No. 5 seed, while North Dakota State was a No. 14 seed. Idaho beat both Utah and North Dakota State on their home floors and started the season 2-1. Idaho has the only two WAC wins against 2009 NCAA Tournament teams so far this year. Idaho narrowly missed out on going 3-0 against 2009 Tourney teams, but fell 95-93 at Cal State Northridge on Dec. 3.

Preseason HonorsIdaho was picked to finish fourth in the conference by the coaches and media alike in 2009-10. It was the highest the Vandals were selected since joining the league in 2005. The media also selected senior guard Steffan Johnson, a transfer from Pacific, as the league’s Preseason Newcomer of the Year, while both the media and the coaches picked senior guard Mac Hopson to the preseason all-WAC first team.

World University GamesSophomore forward Luiz Toledo and senior forward Luciano de Souza represented their home country, Brazil, at the 2009 World University Games at Belgrade, Serbia. The pair helped lead Brazil to a 3-3 record, with wins over Japan, Mexico and United Arab Emirates. De Souza led the team with a 15.2 scoring average, while also pulling down 6.2 rebounds per game. Toledo shot .500 from the floor and averaged 8.0 points and 5.2 rebounds during the tournament. Both players started all six games.

Quick Hits• Idaho finished the 2009-10 season with an RPI ranking of 174.• With a 15-15 final regular-season record, Idaho wraps up its second-consecutve regular season with at least a .500 record. The last time Idaho had back-to-back regular seasons with at least .500 records was 1997-98 and 1998-99.• The 32 combined wins in the last two seasons are the most by an Idaho team since the 1992-93 and 1993-94 teams earned a combined 42 wins.• Idaho’s 12-point comeback on Jan. 30 at Seattle was the team’s largest comeback victory of the season.• Marvin Jefferson’s six blocks against Boise State on Jan. 25 were tied for the most by a WAC player this season and were the most by an Idaho player since Darin Nagle swatted six against New Mexico State on Jan. 11, 2007.• Idaho ranked 47th in the NCAA with 14.8 assists per game.

• The Vandals had 16 scoring runs of +10 or better in 2009-10.• Idaho allowed its opponents just 10 double-doubles in 2009-10.• Idaho’s opponents outscored the Vandals in fast break points just six times this season. For the year, Idaho outscored opponents 165-123 on the run.• In 2009-10, four different players led the team in scoring and five different players led in rebounding.• Idaho slammed home 82 dunks last season, 49 of which came from Marvin Jefferson. Last season, the team had just 47 slams in 33 games by only four players. Team Breakdown


Don Verlin joined the University of Idaho family as head coach of the Vandal men’s basketball team in March 2008 and brought an immediate change to a struggling pro-gram. Verlin led the Idaho program to 32 wins in his first two season, a total that exceeds the victory count of the previous four seasons combined (24). Under his watch, the team qualified for postseason play and won a postseason game for the first time since 1982, hosted a ranked non-conference opponent for the first time in No. 25 Portland on Dec. 6, 2009, then beat the Pilots, 68-48, to give the team its first win over a ranked team in 27 years. The Vandals are also 3-1 against archrival Boise State, including a 79-55 win at Taco Bell Arena in 2010 – the second-largest margin of victory by Idaho and the biggest road win by either team in the series. Idaho’s 32 wins in two seasons are the most by a Vandal squad in a two-year span since the team had 42 wins between 1992-93 and 1993-94. Under Verlin and his staff, Idaho earned its largest margin of victory over a conference opponent (24) since a 101-75 win over Cal Poly in 1999, as well as its largest winning margin (54) over a Division I opponent. In his first year at Idaho, Verlin turned a program that had not had a winning season in the previous decade into one that earned its first post-season victory since 1982. Along the way, the Vandals garnered a 17-16 overall record, a third-place finish in the WAC, and a 9-7 conference record. Idaho’s 17 wins were the most for a Vandal squad since the 1993-94 season and the Vandals won nine conference games for the first time since joining the WAC in 2005. In fact, the nine conference wins surpassed the total amount of conference wins from the previous three seasons combined (seven). Idaho’s RPI jumped an incredible 164 points from the previous season and the Vandals were invited to participate in the inaugural CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tourna-ment. Playing in its first post-season tournament game since 1990, Idaho defeated Drake 69-67 in the opening round and became the only WAC team to earn a postseason victory in 2009. The win also gave the Vandals their 13th win at home for the first time since the 1992-93 season. Verlin gave Vandal fans plenty to cheer about during his first season at the helm, including its first victory over rival Boise State in 15 tries in front of the third-largest crowd in the history of the Cowan Spectrum. The Vandals later defeated the Broncos at Boise for the first time since 1999. Idaho also stunned the WAC with a conference road win at preseason favorite Nevada; broke a 10-game losing streak to New Mexico State; won at Fresno State for the first time; earned its largest WAC victory with a 20-point win over Hawai’i; and used a 54-point victory over UC Irvine to gain its largest victory over a Division I opponent in school history. In year two, the Vandals earned another number of firsts for the program. The team finished the 2009-10 season with a 15-16 overall and 6-10 WAC record and finished sixth in the league. Idaho opened the season with a road win over Utah for the program’s first win at the Huntsman Center, then followed it up two weeks later with the team’s first win at North Dakota State. Both teams were 2009 NCAA Tournament participants. Idaho hosted No. 25 Portland at Memorial Gym on December 6, 2009, and beat the Pilots 68-48 for the team’s second-biggest win over a ranked team and first win over a ranked opponent since 1982. The Vandals beat Hawaiì, 59-52, in the WAC opener to give Idaho conference-opening wins in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1993 and 1994. Verlin also helped improve the culture of the program off the court by spearheading the Readers As Leaders program and participating in the YES Clinic. Readers As Leaders became a very successful program in its first two years, as the Idaho basketball program helped Moscow’s elementary-aged children find joy in reading. The staff also volun-teered with NCAA coaches from around the country in the YES Clinic at the Final Four where they had the opportunity to provide instruction to the children of Detroit. Prior to coming to Idaho, Verlin was the longest tenured assistant coach in Utah State history and had been with Aggie head coach Stew Morrill for 15 years, which includes their time together at Colorado State University before Morrill was hired at Utah State 11 seasons ago. The offensive guru for the Aggies, Verlin was a key component in Utah State’s nine successive post-season appearances and nine-successive 20-plus-win seasons. In his 17 years at the NCAA level, Verlin’s teams have won 72 percent of their games and over the past 21 years his teams have 484 victo-ries. The teams with which he has been involved never have had a record below .500. Verlin, who was in charge of USU’s complex offensive schemes, helped turn the Aggies into one of the best shoot-ing teams in the country as they currently are in a position to finish first in the nation for field goal shooting, as they did in 2005. The team has ranked among the top three shooting teams nationally in four of the last five years. “Don has been with me 15 years and it’s always tough to see someone go when they’ve been with you that long,” Morrill said in a statement released by the school. “I am very happy for him and his family. He will be a terrific head coach and we will miss having him as part of our program. Even though we will be competing in the same league, Don will always be family and that will never change.” Prior to Utah State, Verlin spent two tenures at Colorado State, as he was an assistant at CSU during the 1992 sea-son before moving to Cal State Bakersfield for the 1993 and 1994 seasons. During his two seasons as an assistant in California, Cal State Bakersfield won back-to-back NCAA Division II national championships. Verlin returned to Colorado State ahead of the 1995 season and then spent the next four seasons in Fort Collins. Prior to his first stint at Colorado State, Verlin was an assistant at Columbia (Calif.) Junior College from 1989-91. Columbia posted an 81-23 record in his three years there and won two conference championships. Verlin graduated from Cal State Stanislaus with a degree in physical education in 1991. He earned a master’s degree in education from Colorado State in 1993. Born June 15, 1965 at Roseville, Calif., Verlin graduated from Del Oro High School at Loomis, Calif. He and his wife, the former Serena Shumway, have one son ( Jacob, 13) and one daughter (Sydnee, 7). He also has a twin brother (Ron) who is an assistant basketball coach at Pacific.

Ray Lopes joined the University of Idaho men’s basketball program as an assistant coach in 2008 and was promoted to associate head coach in 2009. Lopes’ résumé shows success at multiple levels of coaching and includes a Western Athletic Conference regular-season title with Fresno State in 2003 and an NBA D League Championship with the Idaho Stampede during the 2007-08 season. Lopes spent two years as associate head coach of the Idaho Stampede at Boise. The team finished 36-14 on its way to the 2007-08 NBA D League Championship. During the 2006-07 season, the Stampede tied for the best record in the league at 33-17. Lopes spent the season prior as a personnel scout for the San Antonio Spurs. Prior to his NBA experience, he was head coach at Fresno State, where he compiled a cumulative 50-37 record over three seasons. He was WAC Coach of the Year and CBS Sportsline Rookie Coach of the Year in 2003. Prior to his stint at Fresno, Lopes spent eight seasons as an assistant coach at the University of Oklahoma under then-coach Kelvin Sampson. He helped the Sooners to eight consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, plus a trip to the Sweet 16 in 1999 and the 2002 Final Four. While at Oklahoma, the Sooners won at least 20 games five seasons in a row, averaging 26 wins per year, including a 31-5 record in 2001-02. The Sooners had a 187-74 record while Lopes was an assistant coach and won the 2001 and 2002 Big 12 Tournament title. Oklahoma was no worse than a No. 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament over his last three years. Lopes also served as an assistant coach under Sampson for one season at Washington State, where he helped the Cougars to a 20-11 record and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. He joined the Washington State staff after a four-year stint as an assistant at UC Santa Barbara from 1989-93 under head coach Jerry Pimm. The Gauchos posted a 73-44 record and advanced to three postseason tournaments. In 1990, UC Santa Barbara advanced to the second round of the NCAA Southeast Regional before losing to the Steve Smith-led Michigan State Spartans. That year, the Gauchos knocked off Jerry Tarkanian’s great UNLV team that won 34 consecutive games and the NCAA title. Lopes and his wife, Pierrette, have two daughters, Alaina and Teylor, and a son, Trey.

Mike Score joined the Idaho men’s basketball staff as an assistant coach in 2007. Score spent the previous three seasons at Utah where the Utes advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament during the 2004-05 season. Prior to his time at Utah, Score spent four seasons as an assistant at Eastern Washington University after earning his start in coaching with four seasons at Southeastern Community College (Iowa). Score has been to an NCAA postseason tournament with each of the three Division I programs he coached. During Score’s time at Utah he coached Andrew Bogut, who was the No. 1 overall pick of the 2005 NBA draft, and established himself as a premier recruiter of both national and international players. The talent he brought to Utah ultimately finished their careers as a No. 5 seed at the 2009 NCAA Tournament and shared the 2009 Mountain West Conference Championship. At Eastern Washington, Score recruited heavily in the Pacific Northwest and Canada and was heavily involved in both coaching and player development. With Score’s help, the Eagles went to the NCAA Tournament in 2004 and the NIT in 2003 -- the school’s first post-season appearances. Eastern also won the Big Sky Conference regular-season and tournament titles in 2004. Prior to his tenure at Eastern Washington, Score spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Southeastern Community College at West Burlington, Iowa. He helped guide Southeastern to the 1999-2000 National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) championship and a 34-4 record. Eight players from that squad went on to play at NCAA Division I schools. Southeastern was 94-41 in Score’s four seasons there as he helped recruit three junior college All-America selections. Score coordinated recruiting, academics, film exchange and scouting, and was also the team’s summer camp director. Score was a student assistant coach at the University of Washington from 1994-96, where he was involved in video exchange and various administrative duties. Score received two bachelor’s degrees from Washington in 1996, one in business administration and another in political science. A 1991 graduate of Everett (Wash.) High School, Score was born Dec. 10, 1972 at Seattle, Wash. He married the former Carly Kropff Aug. 6, 2005 and the couple welcomed their daughter, Ella, on Aug. 12, 2008, and their son, Carter, on June 24, 2010.

Mike Freeman was promoted to assistant coach with the University of Idaho men’s basketball program in 2008. Freeman joined the Vandals in 2007 as the Director of Men’s Basketball Operations. Freeman’s responsibilities include emphasis on post play and player development, as well as monitoring the academic progress of the players. Freeman came to Idaho from Lambuth University at Jackson, Tenn., where he was an assistant coach during the 2006-07 season. The team was ranked in the top 10 for 12 consecutive weeks, reaching as high as fourth in the country, and advanced to the NAIA National Tournament. He coached the Basketball Times NAIA Player of the Year in Ivan Jenkins, who was the second overall pick in the 2007 CBA Draft. Freeman graduated from Iowa in 2006 with a degree in Communication Studies and a minor in Sports Studies. He also earned a certificate in Entrepreneurship. While at Iowa, he was the student manager for the men’s basketball team from 2001-2006 where the Hawkeyes earned trips to three NITs and two NCAA Tournaments. In 2005-06, Iowa earned a 25-9 overall record, which was the second most wins in school history. The team also finished undefeated at home for the first time in school history at 17-0 and earned a No. 3 seed at the NCAA Tournament. He originally is from Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Chris Helbling joined the University of Idaho men’s basketball program as the Director of Operations in 2008 Helbling came to Idaho after spending two seasons at Gonzaga where he served as a student assistant for the Bulldogs from 2006-08. During his time at Gonzaga, the Bulldogs compiled an overall record of 48-19 and won two West Coast Conference championships. The team also made two NCAA Tournament appearances. Helbling graduated with honors in 2008. Before his time at Gonzaga, Helbling was an assistant coach at Walla Walla Community College during the 2005-06 season after a back injury ended his playing career. His responsibilities with the Warriors included recruiting, player development, fundraising, and game preparations. During his three years as a player and coach with WWCC, the Warriors earned a 50-34 overall record and made two trips to the NWAACC tournament where they finished fourth in 2004. During the 2003-04 season, WWCC was ranked as high as No. 2 in the NWAACC Coaches Poll. Helbling graduated from Moscow High School in 2003 and was a four-year letterwinner in basketball and baseball.
