During his tenure, he has led the Hawks back to prominence asone of the stronger programs in the Northeast and coached 17 Hawks to A-10 All-Conference hon-ors and two golfers to All-Region selections.

The architect of one of the region’s most demanding schedules, Lynch took the Saint Joseph’s pro-gram to the cusp of its first-ever NCAA Championship berth in 2003 as the Hawks placed second atthe Atlantic 10 Championship. The Crimson and Gray’s previous best effort at A-10s was third place,a feat the squad accomplished three straight seasons from 1993-95. He also guided the team to aberth in the Eastern Intercollegiate Golf Association Championships each of those seasons.

In his career as head coach, Lynch has compiled an overall record of 20 wins and 22losses. The last dual meet competition for SJU was a 426-465 win over Lafayette atLlanerch Country Club during the 1992-93 season. Since that time, SJU has compet-ed solely in invitational events that have taken the Hawks all over the country.

A former standout at Father Judge High School, Lynch is an avid golfer. The 51-yearold works for Spikes, a company that specializes in trophies and plaques. TheRichboro, Pa., resident also works as an official at high school and college basketballgames and works on the scorer’s table for both Saint Joseph’s men’s and women’sbasketball games. The Saint Joseph’s golf team started the 2009-10 season with astrong showing at the Navy Fall Invitational, tying for seventh in the17-team field. An All-Region selection last year, sophomore JimmyBea led the way for the Hawks, tying for sixth place with a one-under-par 141.

The 7,244-yard Newport National Golf Club proved extremelychallenging for Saint Joseph’s the following week as the Hawks fin-ished 17th Adams Cup field. Sophomore Kyle Sargis was the top fin-isher for SJU, tying for 73rd in the deep field that featured severalNCAA Tournament participants.

Bea again led the Hawks in scoring two weeks later at the FrankLandry Invitational. Shooting a five-over-par 221 at the Spring CreekGolf Club, Bea tied for 17th as Saint Joseph’s finished 14th.

Senior Zach Smith paced the team over the final three events ofthe fall. Playing his final year in Crimson and Gray, Smith tied for 37that the Big 5 Classic and followed that with a tie for 20th at theGeorgetown Hoya Invitational. Smith would cap the fall with a 55th-place finish at the Old Dominion/Seascape Invitational, while as ateam, Saint Joseph’s continued to get inconsistent scores.

Smith continued to lead the Hawks to begin the spring schedule, finishing tied for 72nd overall, while the team placed 20th at the C&FBank Invitational in March.

Sargis had his best showing of the year, tying for 17th at thePrinceton Invitational, while Bea led the way the following week atthe Navy Spring Invitational.

Playing in the final tournament before the Atlantic 10Championship, the Hawks again could not string together three solidrounds as they finished 14th at the Rutherford Intercollegiate at PennState.

Capping the season at the A-10 Championships, the Hawks wereled by Bea and Smith as the pair each finished in the top-30 individu-ally. Bea led Saint Joseph’s with a tie for 17th, while Smith capped hisHawk career with a tie for 28th place. As a team, Saint Joseph’s fin-ished ninth, while Charlotte won its fifth straight A-10 title.

HISTORY

10 Saint Joseph’s University

The 1962-63 SJU golf team went 11-1 duringtheseason, won the Middle Atlantic ConferenceTitle and qualified for the NCAA Tournament.

Golf has a long and storied tradition of success at Saint Joseph’s University. One of theoldest athletic programs on campus, golf debuted as a varsity sport in 1931 as it replaced base-ball on Hawk Hill.

The first Saint Joseph’s team - consisting of Gene Barnes, John McCormick, Frank Daly,James McCormick, Francis Gallagher, Michael Cullather, George Hartigan, Leo Murphy, JohnLehman, Allen Seltzer, Joseph Stanton, and Joseph Schaeffer - played its first match in theSpring of 1931 against the University of Delaware at the Newark Country Club.

After posting an 0-6 mark in their inaugural season, the Hawks claimed the program’s firstvictory in the fall of 1931 as they topped Philadelphia College of Osteopathy, 9-0. SaintJoseph’s also shifted its home that season from Cobbs Creek to the Cedarbrook Country Club.

The golf program was disbanded from 1942-47 due to World War II, but returned to HawkHill in the spring of 1948. Playing out of the Bala Country Club, Saint Joseph’s return to thecourse was spearheaded by seniors Tom Shannon and Jack McGinty, with future SJU Hall ofFamer Paul McDermitt playing out of the top flight for the Hawks.

As a team, the Hawks’ greatest success came in the early 1960s and late 1970s. SaintJoseph’s won its first Middle Atlantic Conference championship and qualified for the NCAATournament in 1963; however the team decided not to go so that they could make extramoney working summer jobs.

The Hawks would again claim the MAC title in 1964 and turned in similar feats from 1875-78 as they were led by All-America Honorable Mention John Truax.

In 1982, Saint Joseph’s became a member of the Atlantic 10 Conference, with the Hawkstying for fourth in their first conference championship. Saint Joseph’s has since turned in itshighest league finish in 2003, placing second overall. It previously placed third in 1993, 1994and 1995.

Left: Paul McDermitt (‘50) served as cap-tain of the golf team and also lettered inbaseball, basketball, and track and field. He graduated with more letters than any-one in Saint Joseph’s history, and wasenshrined in the SJU Athletics Hall of Famein 2006.

Center: Mike (‘97) and Kevin (‘99)McDermott earned Atlantic 10 All-Conference honors a combined five timesduring their years on Hawk Hill.

The Saint Joseph’s Hawk mascot has been flapping its wings for 55 years. One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Hawk is best known for staying in con-

stant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the SaintJoseph’s motto, “The Hawk Will Never Die”.

Saint Joseph’s athletic teams have been recognized with the nickname “Hawks” since 1929. Atthat time, the school’s yearbook editor initiated a contest among the student body for a symbol.More than 100 submissions were narrowed, with “Hawks” winning out over “Grenadiers” by a slimmargin. The name was appropriate because it typified “the fighting spirit of our crimson and grayathletes and it is suggestive of the aerial attack which has made our football team famous.”Football, ironically, was discontinued at SJU following the 1939 season.

The Hawk mascot has garnered numerous accolades in its 55-year history. It has been select-ed as the nation’s top mascot by The Sporting News, Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids,Street & Smith’s Basketball Yearbook and ESPN College Basketball magazine and was a nominee forthe 2008 Mascot Hall of Fame.

THE HAWK

The Hawks claimed their second-straight MACtitle in 1964 as Bob Toner (fourth from the left)claimed medalist honors.

ATLANTIC 10 CONFERENCE

16 Saint Joseph’s University

On March 2, 1975, the idea of what isnow the Atlantic 10 Conference was con-ceived. What started as an eight-school,men’s basketball-only affiliation has growninto a 14-university, 21-sport league that isuniversally hailed as one of the best con-ferences in the country.

That growth and prominence is adirect result of the ideals and commit-ments of the member institutions of theAtlantic 10 - the University of Dayton,Duquesne University, Fordham University,The George Washington University, LaSalle University, University ofMassachusetts, University of NorthCarolina at Charlotte, University of RhodeIsland, University of Richmond, St.Bonaventure University, Saint Joseph'sUniversity, Saint Louis University, TempleUniversity, and Xavier University.

The 14 member institutions of the A-10 are united and strengthened by theirdiversity. Each is extraordinary in its edu-cational mission, whether of a Catholicfaith, a private university or a land grantinstitution. The varied pursuits of eachmember prove that there are manythreads that weave the fabric for a greatconference.

The presidents and chancellors ofAtlantic 10 institutions, in conjunction withAtlantic 10 Commissioner Bernadette V.McGlade, have made a strong commitmentto making the academic and athleticsequation a successful one. Over the years, the league membership has strived to bet-ter recognize the academic accomplish-ments of its student-athletes. TheCommissioner's Honor Roll, which citesevery Atlantic 10 student-athlete with a 3.5grade point average or better, recognized1,199 student-athletes in the Fall 2009while 1,181 were named to the Spring2010 Honor Roll.

The league sponsors Academic All-Conference teams in each of its sports andhonors one student-athlete per sport asthe A-10 Student-Athlete of the Year. Moreover, the Atlantic 10 provides fourpostgraduate scholarship grants to quali-fied student-athletes. The Atlantic 10 has 59 of the 841Division I sports teams being honored withpublic recognition awards for their latestmulti-year Academic Progress Rate scores. This represents an increase of nine A-10teams from last season and 25 two yearsago. All 14 A-10 institutions had at leastone program recognized, while twelveschools had multiple teams garner distinc-tion. In addition, all 21 sports sponsored bythe conference were represented by atleast one A-10 program. Among the 31Division I conferences, only the Atlantic 10,the Ivy Group and the Patriot League hadeach of its member institutions receivepublic recognition awards for one or moreprograms.

Among the 21 sports sponsored by theconference, women's tennis had a league-high six A-10 teams honored, while fiveteams earned distinction in both men’s andwomen’s outdoor track & field and men’sindoor track & field.
