Dayspring Center has a rich tapestry of memories, and many people to thank for the past 25 years. Some spoke passionately about their years of service at Dayspring’s 25th anniversary celebration event. For current board members, it was a privilege to hear first-hand about the many diverse experiences (using church pews in the earliest days to a food ministry for the neighborhood) that eventually formed the comprehensive emergency shelter Dayspring Center is today. The adage that it “takes a village” was never more evident, as we had the chance to hear from past leaders and former residents. As a board member, we are humbled to know that we stand on the shoulders of those who came before us. Their efforts set the foundation for the services being provided today. We are also blessed to have the support of more than 85 congregations, 40 corporate partners, and numerous individuals who help ensure the continued success of programs and services that have improved so many lives. As we look ahead, I and my fellow board members feel privileged to be part of a mission that brings hope to families and to build upon the efforts of its founding members. How do we do this? We continue to help family’s address the root cause of their homelessness and overcome the obstacles for healthier family living. We continue to raise awareness. We continue the message that 1,500 children left homeless each night in Indianapolis is unacceptable. We continue to invite people and organizations who are able to make a difference in the lives of our families. So, where do I see Dayspring in 25 years? Hopefully, right back here again thanking each and every one of you, and those who follow, for your vision, leadership and support.

We are also blessed to have the support of more than 85 congregations, 40 corporate partners, and numerous

individuals who help ensure the continued success of programs and services that have improved so many lives. As we look ahead, I and my fellow board members feel privileged to be part of a mission that brings hope to families and to build upon the efforts of its founding members.

How do we do this? We continue to help family’s address the root cause of their homelessness and

overcome the obstacles for healthier family living. We continue to raise awareness. We continue the message that 1,500 children left homeless each night

in Indianapolis is unacceptable. We continue to invite people and organizations who are able to make a difference in the lives of our families.

So, where do I see Dayspring in 25 years? Hopefully, right back here again thanking each and every one of you, and those who follow, for your vision, leadership and support.

Special Event Update Dayspring Center – Family Matters

Celebrating 25 Years of Service to Homeless Families25th Anniversary Celebration

Your Gifts in Action 25 Years Later…• Over 1 million meals served to homeless parents and

children• Over 5,000 families graduate Dayspring Center to lead

a better life.• In its seventh year, The Follow-up Program has helped

more than 1,000 formerly homeless individuals stay housed and reach their goals for independent living.

• A community garden that began at 200 sq. ft. over 15 years ago now spans 3,600 sq. feet and provides a variety of fresh produce for meals served at Dayspring Center and fresh, healthy food for families at Well-spring Cottage.

• Camp Discovery is in its 12th season and provides a safe, nurturing place for approximately 75 homeless children to engage in educational, social and recre-ational activities throughout the summer.

• The transitional housing program at Wellspring Cot-tage continues to assist formerly homeless families working towards a new career or educational path.

• Renovations are underway in the dining room area, the last section of the emergency shelter to be updated.

A Few of the Highlights:Rev. Nancy Ferriani, former clergy of Trinity

Episcopal Church, over saw the building project in the mid-80’s that would become the emergency shelter known as Dayspring Center.

“We were unable to get a permit to build a new shelter back then but realized no one could keep us from renovating the interior of the building we already owned”, she commented. It would take two years to transform the empty office space attached to the church into a shelter facility that would accommodate fourteen families at a time.

Debby Knox of WISH-TV worked closely with Dayspring Center to help raise awareness on the city’s homeless families. Guests viewed a feature story Debby did at Dayspring Center in the late 90’s. She spoke about the changing landscape of our Indy communities and the vital service Dayspring Center provides the many families who are struggling with homelessness today.

Former Board President, Jim Dodson who was instrumental in establishing Dayspring Center’s Wellspring Cottage in 1998, expressed his continued support of Dayspring Center. “I have served on several boards in my time. Dayspring Center continues to be the most memorable time of service and most cherished.”

Current Board President, Chris Johns, credited the efforts of former staff and volunteers, noting that each guest in attendance had contributed in some way to the organization we know as Dayspring Center today. Numerous community partners were also recognized and the vital role their continued support will have to the future of Dayspring Center.

The 25th anniversary event was also an opportunity to bring to light some of the startling facts about homelessness. With the help of a dozen volunteers, 1,500 child-like figures were placed on the front lawn of Dayspring Center, representing the number of children homeless on any given night in our city. For 5 days, downtown commuters, neighborhood residents and businesses were reminded of the tragic circumstance of too many children in our city.

Over 25 years ago, the kind gesture of a priest opening the parish doors so the homeless could sleep on a pew marked the beginning of a life-changing mission for families with children. Today, Dayspring Center continues to be one of the few emergency shelters for families with children in central Indiana. To date, over 5,000 families, including nearly 12,000 children found hope and a new beginning at Dayspring Center.

Mayor Greg Ballard, Debby Knox of WISH-TV and Bishop Cate Waynick of the Episcopal Diocese of Indianapolis were among the speakers to help kick-off Dayspring Center’s 25th Anniversary Celebration on Wednesday, March 16! Guests gathered around noon at All Saints Episcopal Church to listen to founding members, former volunteers and staff reflect on the early years of the Center.

The summer months pose additional challenges – separation from peers, isolation, chronic hunger and boredom – adding to learning loss and putting them at a distinct disadvantage at the start of a new school year. In its 12th year, Camp Discovery provides a safe, nurturing place for homeless children to participate in educational and recreational activities designed to boost

IncomeMany organizations have been slow to recover

from the recession, including Dayspring Center. The organization ended 2010 with income slightly under the previous year. The funding sources contributing the largest percent increase were government and individual contributions. Two significant government grants lost in 2009 were recovered in 2010 resulting in over $60,000 of income. In addition, development efforts to expand the private donor base helped to increase individual donations by 10%. As anticipated, faith-based and foundation funding declined slightly. As the economy continues to recover, support from faith-based organizations is also expected to improve.

ExpensesThe accompanying pie chart shows expenses for

2010 remained relatively unchanged compared to 2009. Family services (47%), Wellspring Cottage (18%), and the meal program (2%) are direct services for homeless families enrolled in Dayspring programming and account for nearly 70% of total expenses. The cost to run the meal program, providing over 22,000 meals a year to homeless families and their children decreased for the second year due to an increase in food and supply donations from community groups. Management and Fundraising expenses continued to be below the industry standard of 35% for nonprofit agencies.
