In this floortalk she discusses the journey she has taken to create these works and her new project Stranded, which will be shown as part of Fotofreo in March.

Compiled from the outtakes of her Sleepers project, this animated video work provides another dimension to Martin- McGuire’s work. Tossing and turning, her subjects appear to dance across the screen as they descend into sleep
Each year the Head On Portrait Prize grows in popularity as well as in critical regard. This year Head On has expanded to become a photographic festival, utilising venues around the city. Festival curator Moshe Rosenzveig and guests discuss the evolution of Head On.
Experience the world of subculture as photographers document the dress codes, attitudes and what it means to belong. They present a selection of their images and discuss the complexities of gaining access to and trust from the communities they photograph.

Floortalk Video Portraits 1pm Saturday 8 May
The screen-based works in My Favourite Australian and The Mirror Effect were all created specifically for the gallery environment. In this floortalk, ACP Program Manager Malcolm Smith leads a discussion on the works in these exhibitions and the broader role that video can play in contemporary art.
From over three thousand entries in this innovative portrait prize, forty finalists are selected to exhibit their work at the ACP and another one hundred and fifty entrants are selected to show their work as part of a video presentation in the ACP lounge.

Head On hosted by the ACP, is Australia’s most critically acclaimed photographic portrait competition reflecting a vibrant diverse cross-section of new and traditional photographic practices. In 2010 Head On has grown to become the Head On Photo Festival, encompassing exhibitions and events in venues around Sydney.

Since Narcissus we have been both captivated and tormented by our reflected image. Mirrors give us access to an interior world where it is sometimes difficult to distinguish between the civilising effects of ‘self-awareness’ and the dark vortex of ‘self-obsession’.
In The Mirror Effect, Natalie Bookchin (USA), Adad Hannah (Canada), Sally Rees (TAS) and Torben Sko (ACT) playfully explore the way mirrors work and what they mean to us in the modern world. Embracing old-fashioned optical trickery as well as state of the art technology, this exhibition is a hall of mirrors in which our anxieties as well as our aspirations are reflected back at us.
All Australians have a favourite Aussie: whether it is an historic figure, sporting hero, popular idol, cultural great or the local publican.
My Favourite Australian, a unique multi-platform collaboration between the National Portrait Gallery and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, called on the public to vote for their favourite Australians in two categories, Popular and Unsung Heroes.
Leading Australian artists and filmmakers were then commissioned to create short duration, moving image portraits of each subject. Filmmakers were given complete independence to develop their creative concepts. This approach has created a wonderfully engaging and diverse juxtaposition of portraiture.
This exhibition includes video portraits of famous Australians including Gough Whitlam, Fred Hollows and Olivia Newton-John, and includes work by Lynette Wallworth, TV Moore, Merilyn Fairskye and SODA_JERK.

Love Me is a collection of images documenting how far people will go for the quest for physical perfection. Negotiating the boundaries of art and documentary photography, this series reflects a world we have created where enormous social, psychological and economic rewards and penalties are attached to the way we look.
Zed Nelson’s subjects are school girls; body builders; Iranians queuing for nose jobs; New Yorkers having foot surgery to fit into Jimmy Choo shoes; and South American women undergoing surgery to bring themselves eerily close to Barbie dolls.
Zed Nelson has produced a powerful body of work that forces each and every one of us to question our own place in a culture that compels us to constantly judge, and be judged, by our own appearance.

Domesticated is a series of images that draws a connection between the mystery and freedom of the natural world, while commenting on our desire to tame the wild around us and compulsively control the wild within our nature. Amy Stein’s work examines the primal issues of comfort and fear, dependence and determination, submission and dominance that play out in the physical and psychological spaces between man and the natural world.
Amy Stein was born in New York. She recently won the Saatchi Gallery/Guardian Prize for the Domesticated series, and has been named one of the top fifteen emerging photographers in the world by American Photo magazine. Her book, Domesticated, won the best book award at the 2008 New York Photo Festival.

Sydney artist Olivia Martin-McGuire photographs her subjects at the point where consciousness finally slips away and sleep takes over. On a bed in the studio, she captures the artless choreography of sleep; the intimate way couples hold or fall against each other and the graceful simplicity of bodies without inhibition.
Martin-McGuire’s images are intensely, almost unbearably, intimate. Shot on medium format film in sharp detail, we are able to observe every hair on these sleepers’ bodies at the moment when they are most vulnerable.
