Tupper, the Bryant University bulldog mascot, was named after Earl Tupper, president and founder of the

Tupperware Corpora-tion. Mr. Tupper donated his 220-

acre Smithfield farmestate to what was then

Bryant College on October24, 1967. Tupper, who had

originally planned to sell hisestate, was so impressed

with Bryant that he decided todonate the land instead, allowing

Bryant to move from its original locationon Providence’s East Side to its current

Smithfield, R.I. residence.

Originally nicknamed the Indians, Bryant became the Bulldogs in 1995. Out of appreciation for Earl Tupper and his generosity, when the school made the move,Tupper the Bulldog was born.

Ahighlight of Bryant University’s stellar athletic facilities, the Bryant Turf Complex was completed in2006 to provide a new home for Bulldog field hockey, men’s and women’s soccer and men’s andwomen’s lacrosse.

Made from Sprinturf technology, the field provides a consistent G-max level that trumps even the mostprestine of natural grass fields. The playing surface is surrounded by a state-of-the-art track, rennovated in 2006 as part of the Turf Field project, which houses both the men’s and women’s track

and field programs, while the field also serves as a practice facility for a number of Bryant teams.

With the recent addition of stadium lights, the Complex also allows for athletic practice and competition throughout the seasons. A new scoreboard provides the Bulldogs with timing and scoringnot just for field hockey, soccer and lacrosse, but also for track timing up to eight lanes. Meanwhile,Bryant’s recently installed bleachers accomodate its many fans — the Bulldogs drew a crowd of over 1,000for its men’s lacrosse contest against crosstown Brown University in 2009.

The Bryant Turf Complex is located adjacent to Bulldog Stadium, and the complex shares the stadium’sconcourse, training room, concession stand and restrooms. An upgrade to the stadium’s concourse, completed in 2009, also gives Turf Field teams new and improved locker rooms of their own inside the com-plex, offering cutting edge video technology, coaches lockers and comfortable and accomodating team rooms.

In addition to serving as the home of Bryant field hockey, soccer and lacrosse, the Bryant Turf Complexhas played host to the Rhode Island Special Olympics, Relay for Life and several conference and NCAAchampionships.

The Stadium Expansion Project, Bryant

University’s newest addition to its athletic facilities, was completed on

August 31, 2009, marking the addition ofbrand new, state-of-the-art locker roomfacilities for Bryant student-athletes as

well as the completion of renovations to Bulldog Stadium

and the Bryant Field House.

The 15-week project, whichbegan in the Summer of 2009, included

the addition of five new locker rooms, as well astwo coaches’ meeting rooms and a fully

equipped training room.

Thanks to the generous donation of former Bulldog lacrosse player andBryant University alumnus DavidBierne, who made the Stadium Expansion Project possible, themen’s lacrosse program is the

beneficiary of one of the nation’s newest and most

impressive facilities.

Nestled on the back concourse of Bulldog Stadium just steps from both of the team’stwo practice and game fields lies a 1,685-

square foot locker room tailored specifically to the comforts and needs

of the men’s lacrosse program. Themodern and personalized meeting

place features 49 individualizedfine oak lockers, a comfortable

lounge area, high-definitionflatscreen television and personal

shower facilities, and well as state-of-the-artaudio/visual technology.

The fully carpeted area, used solely by the men’s lacrosse program, also comes outfitted with itsown equipment room and coaches’ office space.

Designed by Edward Rowse Architects, this spacious area cultivates a true team atmosphere and provides the perfect space for team meetings, film review and a multitude of other activities, both in and out of season.

The Stadium Expansion project also added brand new locker room facilities for the Bryant football, field hockey, women’s lacrosse and women’s soccer teams and stretches the length of the Bulldog Stadium concourse. The additions to the field house fullfill the needs of many Bulldog student-athletes, as the Bryant University Athletic Department continues to grow and expand not just on the road to full Division I membership, but also on

its way to becoming a competitive player on the Division I scene. The addition was officially opened for the start of the 2009-10 fall seasons.

Hon. Ronald K. MachtleyBryant University President Under the leadership of President Ronald K. Machtley,

Bryant University has evolved into one of the mostprogressive and leading institutions of higher learn-

ing in New England.

Hardly a president who remains behind the scenes when itcomes to intercollegiate athletics, Machtley — a former col-legiate student-athlete in his own right — has been an ar-dent supporter of Bulldog sports since becoming theUniversity’s seventh president in 1996.

Mr. Machtley’s “New Century Plan For Excellence” initiatedthe most significant enhancements to the Bryant campusand community since the university’s move to Smithfield, and athletics was no exception. His New Century Plan sawthe Bulldogs’ varsity athletics program expand to 22 teamswith the addition of football, field hockey, men’s andwomen’s lacrosse, and in 2005 men’s and women’s swim-ming.

The addition of the new varsity programs brought about anoverhaul of the university’s athletics facilities as well. Theserenovations are highlighted by the construction of BulldogStadium, which serves as the home of the Bryant football, soccer and lacrosse teams, as well as state-of-the-art fieldsfor baseball, softball and field hockey. Changes to Bulldogathletics also inspired and supported the introduction of theWellness Center, which provides Bryant with a health andfitness center that is second to none.

Before assuming the presidency at Bryant in June of 1996,Mr. Machtley was best known as one of Rhode Island’s lead-

ing public servants. He served as a member of the UnitedStates House of Representatives from 1988 to 1995 and wasa member of the House Armed Services Committee. As a reflection of the es-teem in which his congressional colleagues held him, Mr.Machtley was elected president of his congressional classduring each of his terms in the House.

Upon completion of his term in Congress, Mr. Machtleyserved as a partner in the international telecommunicationslaw firm Wilkinson, Barker, Knauer & Quinn in Washington,D.C. He is admitted to practicing law in Rhode Island, Mas-sachusetts and Florida.

2010 SEASON OUTLOOK

12 2010 Bryant University Lacrosse

This year, as fourth-year head coach MikePressler will tell you, there are no moral victo-ries for the Bryant University lacrosse team.

A loss is a loss.

But after the team put up an impressive 10-5 recordin its inaugural Division I campaign last season, thatmentality, that mantra, is a testament to just howclear the goals of the 2010 Bulldogs are: they arenot here to just put pressure on the best of the best– they are here to beat them.

“We set some concrete goals for our program: onceagain to get to .500 – which is nine games with ourpacked slate of 17 contests – and also to pull offdouble-digit wins,” said Pressler. “To pull off 10 winswould certainly be a special accomplishment for theBulldog lacrosse team. And with 11 of our 17 gameson the road, that’s just six home games, the task be-comes even more difficult as we look toward ac-complishing one, if not both of those goals.”

With a strong core of veterans back for another runat Division I competition and ready to lead arguablythe most exciting class of newcomers in Bryantlacrosse history, the Bulldogs will look to stand tallin the face of one of the strongest schedules in thenation – a slate that features more games than anyother team in the DI ranks.

In fact, Bryant has so many games, 17 to be exact, that the team will have no scrimmages or preseasontests before taking on fourth-ranked North Carolinain its Feb.13 season opener.

“We’ll have just 17 practices before we head downto North Carolina, where normally we would havefour to five weeks and a couple of scrimmagesunder our belt at that point,” said Pressler. “But theway we set up this model with a packed slate of 17games, we knew what we were getting into.”

But the 2010 squad certainly has the talent and ex-perience, as well as a fresh look stemming from a12-man recruiting class, to continue the success theprogram achieved last season and more.

ATTACKThe Bulldogs’ biggest battle, especially in the sea-son’s early goings, will come up front, as junior JohnTruscello (Holbrook, N.Y.), sophomore Travis Har-rington (Vestal, N.Y.) and freshman Peter McMahon(Wilton, Conn.) step in to fill the holes left by thegraduation of last year’s entire first attack unit.

“If you look at our team, the obvious void is the factthat we lost all three starting attackmen from a yearago,” said Pressler. “But in the unit that is set to takeover, we have some terrific players. It will be a goodmix of new guys and veterans, as well as some un-derclassmen who have put in their time and waitedtheir turn – and their turn is now.”

Six attackmen will look to contribute as needed andreplicate the offensive production lost by the grad-uation of Zack Greer (42 goals, 26 assists), KevinHoagland (33g, 14a) and Bryan Kaufmann (30g,

15a), who were the team’s top three scorers a year

ago and represent more than half of Bryant’s 2009total points (160).

Harrington will lead those ranks after chipping innine goals and seven assists in his rookie campaign. While the starting unit seems set, the other three –junior Chase Hayes (Greensboro, N.C.), freshmanJK Poirier (Coatesville, Pa.) and freshman Kyle Crow-ley (Scituate, Mass.) – will look to chip in as needed. And that job as the fourth attack option could justfall to Poirier.

“The starters are very clear cut, but the fourth at-tacker whose stock seems to rise every day is JKPoirier,” Pressler said. “And after being that fourthguy himself a year ago, Harrington is the one withthe most experience despite being just a sopho-more, and he is expected to step in as the leader ofthat group.”

MIDFIELDBryant will look for much of its offensive prowessto come from a stacked midfield platoon, particu-larly from a top line that includes three of the team’stop four returning scorers.

Junior Matt Larson (Cheshire, Conn.) represents theBulldogs’ top returning scorer, finishing fourth onlast year’s squad with 16 goals and six helpers in 15starts. He will be joined on the first line by classmateGary Crowley (Scituate, Mass.) and sophomorestandout Max Weisenberg (Long Beach, N.Y.), whonotched 10 goals with nine assists as a freshman.

“We really like our first midfield in those threeguys,” said Pressler. “They were really coming alongas a unit last year. Matt Larson, Gary Crowley andMax Weisenberg will be our first midfield withoutquestion, and we will follow that up with a group ofstrong veterans in senior captain Bryant Amitrano(Valley Stream, N.Y.), junior Evan Roberts (WestCornwall, Vt.) and one outstanding freshman inRhode Island native Ben Sternberg (NorthKingstown, R.I.) on the second line.”

FACEOFFWithout a doubt the most crucial retention forPressler and the Bulldogs is fifth-year senior captainAndrew Hennessey (Wading River, N.Y.), who re-turns as the nation’s top faceoff specialist.

Hennessey posted a nationally top-ranked .711 face-off winning percentage in 2009, coming out aheadof his opposition on 248-of-349 opportunities at theX. The 2010 captain won more than half of the totalfaceoffs in all 15 games last season, winning 70 per-cent or better in 11 outings. Hennessey was so dom-inant that the next-highest faceoff winningpercentage – that of Stony Brook’s Adam Rand –was just a 63.8 percent success rate. But he didn’tjust win faceoffs. In fact, Hennessey also finishedatop the team standings in ground balls with 118,good for third nationally (7.80 per game), andchipped in a goal and two assists.

“If there is a player more accomplished in his ca-reer here at Bryant than Andrew Hennessey, Ihaven’t met him yet,” said Pressler. “Andrew’s debutat the faceoff X in 2009 was truly remarkable. Hisnumbers – 71 percent with 100-plus ground ballsagainst the level of competition he went up against– and just his consistency throughout that 15-gameseason has made Andrew one of the premier face-off specialists in the country.”

But even without his spectacular numbers, Hen-nessey is a threat to even the best of teams.

“What matters most isn’t even what the statisticssay, but how other teams game play against him,”added Pressler. “They really try to game plan a wayto get the better of Andrew, and through 15 gamesa year ago, they couldn’t do it. Andrew proved tobe very dominant against the toughest teams on ourschedule and should continue to be one of ourstrongest assets in 2010.”

SHORTSTICK MIDFIELDFellow fifth-year senior and two-time captain MattMcAllister (East Quogue, N.Y.) rejoins the Bulldogs

2010 SEASON OUTLOOK

healthy and ready to be a leader at theshortstick defensive midfield positionafter missing all of last season to in-jury.

“The return of Matt McAllister as afifth-year senior and a returning cap-tain takes the unit from a year ago thatwe felt so strongly about and vaults itto an even higher level for the 2010season,” said Pressler. “Matt is ar-guably our best overall athlete and heis 100 percent healthy from his kneeinjury a year ago.”

Don’t be surprised to see him playingsome offense, too — he is that versatileand that dynamic, according to hishead coach.

McAllister will be joined by junior RobStufano (Garden City, N.Y.), who re-turns as a three-year starter after dish-ing out seven helpers and picking up22 ground balls last season.

“Rob has just been so steady, so rocksolid throughout his career at Bryant,”said Pressler. “He and McAllister makea great duo at their position.”

And when they need a break, sopho-more James Devine (New City, N.Y.) isready to jump in after spending muchof last year waiting his turn and learn-ing from the sidelines.

“James will see a lot of playing time,”said Pressler. “He is a solid athlete anda very smart player, and he hasearned the opportunity to get someminutes.”

LONGSTICK MIDFIELDOne of four captains this season andthe only junior elected to the position,Anthony Iannello (Lake Ronkonkoma,N.Y.) is the obvious choice for the Bull-dogs at the longstick middie position.Iannello recorded 56 ground balls inhis 2009 campaign with 26 causedturnovers, good for second on thesquad. He also added a goal and a trioof assists in 15 appearances.

Junior Rob Maiorano (Easton, Conn.)(19 ground balls, 9 caused turnovers,3 goals), will play opposite him, andthe two complement each other well.

“We’re led at this position by our jun-ior captain and three-year starter An-thony Iannello,” said Pressler.“Together, he and Rob Maiorano — asit is with McAllister and Stufano at theirposition — give us two quality playersin the long pole ranks. Anthony andRob are very athletic, great checkers

and outstanding wing players on thefaceoff.”

CLOSE DEFENSEThe true strength of the 2010 Bulldogslies in the return of its fully intact andhighly experienced first defensive unitof senior Matt Murnane (RockvilleCentre, N.Y.) and juniors Joe Rauchut(Philadelphia, Pa.) and Ryan Mahoney(Wading River, N.Y.).

Touted by Pressler as one of the bestdefensemen he’s ever coached, Mur-nane anchors the unit after picking up58 ground balls and causing 43turnovers (No. 2 in the nation) duringhis junior season in 2009.

Murnane will be scripted with the jobof defending the opponent’s top at-tackman every time out, and with anuncanny ability to put the ball on theground, be it through a check or aknocked-down pass, Murnane mightjust have the best stick skills on theteam, a quality that will be quite anasset against squads like North Car-olina, Brown, Hobart and Army.

“Arguably, our best overall player isfour-year starter Matt Murnane – thisis not news to anybody,” said Pressler.“He will draw the No. 1 attackmaneach and every week. Matt is as ver-satile and complete a defenseman asI have ever coached.”

But it is the deadly combination ofMurnane, Mahoney and Rauchut thathas been shutting down opposing of-fenses since 2008.

“Joe is our physical left-handed stop-per where Ryan is more of a checkerand cover guy,” said Pressler. “But likeany great attack unit, these three de-

fensemen complement one anotherexquisitely.”

Close defense is without question thedeepest position for the Black andGold, and a number of other Bulldogswill be in the mix for significant playingtime. Among them is junior HarrisonTull (Annapolis, Md.), who appearedin all 15 games last season with 12ground balls after transferring toBryant from Colgate University. Join-

ing Tull in the fight for minutes is soph-omore Tim Clinton (Darien, Conn.),who had a spectacular rookie seasonfor the Bulldogs, as well as a pair ofoutstanding freshmen in Mason Poli(Downingtown, Pa.) and Glenn Maio-rano (Easton, Conn.).

GOALKEEPERSophomore Jameson Love (Darien,Conn.) returns to man the pipes forthe Bulldogs in 2010 after a stellarfreshman campaign that left himranked nationally in goals against av-erage (8.75; No. 22) and save per-centage (.559; No. 20). Love started all15 games, playing in all but 36 min-utes. He posted 160 stops and faced459 shots, going 10-5 on the year.

“For the second year in a row, we willopen up our season with Jameson

Love between the pipes,” saidPressler. “Jameson has had an out-standing preseason here in 2010. Heis seeing the ball very well and hisclearing skills have improved greatlyfrom a year ago. Jameson also isemerging as one of our key vocal lead-ers in the defensive end. Our coachingstaff couldn’t be more pleased with hisprogress to date.”

Backing up Love will be junior AlecRosenbruch (Nashua, N.H.) and out-standing freshman John Wallace(Winchester, Mass.).

THE SCHEDULEPressler again gave his Bulldogs aschedule they could “hang their hatson,” a fact that will be more evidentthan ever come February 13, whenBryant opens up its second season ofDivision I action against the fourth-ranked Tar Heels in Chapel Hill.

“We opened up our Division I cam-paign in Year One against [top-ranked]Virginia and in Year Two we headsouth again to face off against anotherquality opponent in UNC,” saidPressler. “So for the second year in arow, it’ll be another ambitious openerfor the Bulldogs, to say the least.”

Following the opener is Bryant’s homedebut, coming against the Universityof Vermont, one of two America Eastteams the Bulldogs will take on (StonyBrook). The Black and Gold will thenface off against a tough Army side forthe second-straight season and willlater take on fellow Patriot Leaguemember Holy Cross. The Bulldogs takeon a trio of Ivy League opponents(Brown, Yale and Dartmouth) and fourmembers of their future home in theNortheast Conference (Wagner,Robert Morris, Sacred Heart and Quin-nipiac). Bryant will also make returntrips to Bellarmine and Presbyterianand add first-time opponents Fairfield,Providence and Hobart to the 2010slate.

2007 Field Turf Division II Coach of the Year • 2005 USILA•Division I National Coach of the Year • 1987 USILA Division III National Coach of the Year • Three-time ACC Coach of the Year

(1995, 2001, 2005) • Three-time NCAC Coach of the Year(1987, 1988, 1989) • Northeast-10 Coach of the Year (2007)

In his first two seasons as the head coach ofthe Bryant University men's lacrosse pro-gram, Mike Pressler transformed Bulldog

lacrosse from a successful Division II team to adominant Division II team, guiding the Bulldogsto a pair of Northeast-10 Conference titles and

one NCAA playoff berth. Last year, in histhird season at the program's helm,

Pressler elevated the Bulldogs'game once again, turning a

dominant Division II team intoa feared Division I squad, ca-pable of contending withand upsetting some of thebest teams in the nation.

In just his third season inSmithfield, R.I., Pressler ledthe Bulldogs into the Divi-

sion I ranks and into a degreeof success that shocked the DIlacrosse world. The 2009 Bull-dogs faced off against such na-

tional powerhouses asMaryland, Virginia, Brown, Army,

Penn and Loyola (Md.), earning a 10-5 overall record and recognition inboth national polls throughout theirinaugural campaign. Pressler's Bull-dogs earned key wins over oppo-nents such as Penn (15-11), Lehigh(14-13), Bellarmine (14-4) andDartmouth (12-9), en route to be-coming the biggest upset story ofthe season.

Pressler's efforts and contributions, not just with Bryant but throughouthis illustrious coaching career, wererecognized in September 2008when he was named head coachof the 2010 U.S. Men's NationalTeam.

Before making the move to Division I, Pressler ledhis Bulldogs to a 14-4 overall record in 2008, enroute to the program's second conference title, de-feating top-ranked Le Moyne College in Syracuse,N.Y. on May 4, 2008. Bryant sealed its 14th win withthe victory, setting a new school record. The 5-4 winalso earned the Bulldogs their first-ever NCAA tour-nament berth.

Bryant has posted a 35-13 record in three seasonsunder Pressler, who guided the Bulldogs to an 11-4record in his first season in 2007.

In his first year with Bryant, Pressler's Bulldogsearned the program's first-ever Northeast-10 Con-ference regular-season title and top seed in the con-ference tournament. Bryant tied what was then aschool record with 10-consecutive wins during the2007 campaign, posting an undefeated 9-0 leaguemark. Among those wins was an overtime victoryover defending national champion Le Moyne, snap-ping the Dolphin's 70-game win streak. The Bull-dogs, who ranked as high as No. 4 nationally in 2007,gained the No. 1 regional ranking for the entiremonth of April.

Previously the head coach at Duke University for 16seasons, Pressler was named Bryant's new skipperon August 5, 2006, becoming just the second coachin program history.

In his years in Durham, N.C., Pressler compiled a153-82 overall record at Duke, leading the Blue Dev-ils to three Atlantic Coast Conference champi-onships, 10 NCAA tournament berths and anappearance in the 2005 Division I men's lacrossechampionship game.

In 2005, Pressler earned the nation's top coachinghonor after directing the Blue Devils to an NCAA sin-gle-season record 17 wins against three defeats, being named the National Coach of the Year. Behindthe play of three First Team All-America selections,

the 2005 squad established a new NCAA record for the best win total turnaround(up from 5 wins in 2004). Duke led the nation in scoring offense, averaging over13 goals per game, and finished the year ranked second in the national poll.

During his tenure at Duke University, the men's lacrosse program posted a 100 per-cent graduation rate.

Pressler arrived at Duke as one of the most successful NCAA Division III lacrossecoaches in the country. In five seasons at Ohio Wesleyan University, Pressler led theBattling Bishops to the NCAA finals in three-straight seasons and the semifinalstwice. He was named the USILA's Division III Coach of the Year in 1987 and theNorth Coast Athletic Conference's Coach of the Year three times.

Your best defense against sports relateddental injury and concussion.

Mike PresslerMen’s Lacrosse Head Coach,

Bryant University / Team USA

“At Bryant University we practice how we play; full-contact and full-speed. Unfortunately, with that come the inevitable big-hit collisions. That’s why we make sure the Bryant Bulldogs only use the very best equipment.

Concussions in lacrosse occur at an alarming rate. Protection against head injuries are my biggest safety priority. That’s why we use Defender Mouthguards. Never before have I seen the quality and customer service that Defender provides. Their completely custom and streamline designed mouthguards provide our student-athletes with optimal protection, while ensuring their ability to communicate clearly, breathe easily, and perform at the highest level. Most importantly, Defender Mouthguards keep our student-athletes off the IR, on the field, and in the classroom.

The Bryant Bulldogs only use the very best. We only use Defender Mouthguards.”
