Welcome by the President
Dear ICRS Members, Colleagues, and Guests,
On behalf of the International Cartilage Repair Society, I am pleased to invite you to attend the 9th ICRS World Congress in Sitges – Barcelona, Spain. This will be our first ICRS World Congress on the sunny Mediterranean coast and represents our continued commitment to globalization as a society. Sitges is a small fishing village located southwest of Barcelona that
has an excellent reputation for hosting large conferences, yet it remains a town with deep architectural and cultural heritage and a vibrant urban center. Our local organizing Committee Chairs for Sitges, Ramon Cugat and Pedro Guillen have been working closely with the ICRS Executive Team and the Program Co-Chairs, Bruce Caterson and Christoph Erggelet, to orchestrate an exceptional scientific, educational, and social event.
The ICRS World Congress is our most important event of our Society. It is through active participation in World Congress events that surgeons, scientists, and in-dustry representatives exchange ideas and partner in our unified goal. Together, we strive to further our understanding joint biology and improve cartilage repair to help our patient’s live active, pain-free lives. The World Congress also provi-des an ideal venue for us as a society to demonstrate our devotion to education and training of our young scientists and clinicians through directed instructional courses, industry symposia, and didactically-focused sessions.
Start writing your abstracts today and save the dates of September 26 – 29, 2010 to attend the ICRS World Congress! Visit our website www.cartilage.org for frequent updates on dates for abstract submission and recent developments in the World Congress. Thank you for your support of the ICRS and I look forward to seeing you in Sitges, Spain in September, 2010.
Sincerely,
Lisa A. FortierICRS President
Welcome by the Congress Chairmen
Dear Colleagues and Friends
Welcome to the 9th ICRS World Congress to be held next year in the Spanish Mediterranean village of Sitges. It offers a wide mix of culture, history, tradition, and touristic facilities like, water sports, golf,
restaurants, hotels, shopping, night life… Sitges is next to the well known Spanish city of Barcelona. It is very well connected by train and road to the Barcelona city centre.
The ICRS goal is to promote cartilage progress through education throughout the world, therefore the 2010 ICRS World Congress is reaching out to cartilage scientists, surgeons and industry leaders of all nations to share their common interests about cartilage.
Simultaneous translations (English to Spanish), of a major part of the meeting is planned.
The scientific programme committee is working very hard on organizing an excellent and attractive programme for the ICRS 2010 World Congress.
As we meet with old friends and make new ones, it is always important to mix education with a time to talk, reflect, enjoy life, and experience the local scene. Sitges is truly a fantastic host city to bring this to fruition.
We are looking forward for your attendance to the 9th ICRS World Congress.

Welcome by the Scientific Programme Committee
Dear ICRS Members, Colleagues & Friends
The 2010 ICRS Programme Committee is committed to providing our ICRS member-ship, friends and industry partners with new and exciting developments in clinical and preclinical applications to the repair and re-
generation of cartilage and other musculoskeletal tissues. Our overall goal for this meeting is to broaden the scope of presentations provided at our annual ICRS meeting and to promote interdisciplinary education and understanding bet-ween the clinical and preclinical scientists.
From the clinical perspective we plan to have this meeting introduce and evalu-ate new surgical procedures used for cartilage repair and regeneration as well as the use of new biomaterials and bioengineering technologies in these clinical applications. Animal models used in early developmental studies for TE / TR ap-plications in musculoskeletal tissue regeneration and repair will also be introdu-ced and evaluated at this meeting.
From the basic science (preclinical) perspective, we have decided to include some new research areas (e.g. biomarkers, proteomics & genomics and new ima-ging technologies) that we believe will become sources for future patient clinical diagnosis and outcome measures for determining the efficacy of preclinical and clinical research using cartilage and musculoskeletal tissue regeneration and repair technologies.
At this meeting we will have a session that will focus on introducing Spain, our host country to the ICRS. The session will highlight TE / TR applications to carti-lage repair and regeneration in this country and also initiate and promote new collaborations for future clinical and preclinical research.
Our local organisers have provided an exciting and beautiful venue for the 2010 ICRS meeting. The programme committee is committed to providing our congress attendees with new and exciting developments in TE / TR technologies that pro-mote the repair and regeneration in cartilage and other musculoskeletal tissues. We look forward to you providing us with your scientific presentations, opinions and personal contributions to this meeting.
Yours sincerely,
Bruce Caterson & Chris ErggeletScientific Programme Chairmen

Welcome to Sitges, a true MediterraneanPearl
Sitges, with its mild climate the whole year around, has always been a place which has enchanted artists, tourists and visitors from all over the world. For many, the secret lies in its light and almost 300 days of sun that it enjoys every year, which attracted the pain-ters, sculptors and writers who settled here at the end of the 19th century.
Nature has indeed been generous to Sitges with its setting in an outstan-ding location on the Mediterranean coast at the foot of the Garraf Massif. Its cultural heritage is extraordinary, with a lively art scene and its traditions are respected with a modern perspecti-ve. Sitges has preserved important fea-tures both from mediaeval times and from its history as an old fishing town, enabling visitors to enjoy a notable architectural heritage. Sitges in the 21th century, whilst mindful of its roots, is focused on innovation and creativity.
Another fundamental aspect of the attraction that Sitges possesses is its gastronomy and shops, thanks to the variety, quality and singularity. In Sitges you will find small, unique boutiques with a hospitable welcoming and
restaurants where the Mediterranean cuisine reaches its highest mark. Not to forget the lively nightlife that has made Sitges so famous and all the events celebrated here throughout the year that gives Sitges its own personality.
But above all, it’s the character of its people: open, tolerant, charming and cosmopolitan, given the more than 70 different nationalities living here, that makes Sitges such a passionate destination.
Location• Sitges is located on the Mediterra-
nean coast, 25 Km south from Barcelona

A meeting point for taxi- and /or private bus transfers will be organised at the ICRS welcome desk at the arrival hall of Terminal 1.
