Hello New North Texans!

On behalf of the Office of New Student and Student Success Programs, Welcome to

the University of North Texas. You have made a wonderful decision to attend UNT and

become part of our growing community. As you transition to UNT, know our office exists to

provide you with the necessary tools to acclimate you to the University, ensuring a smooth

transition. It may help to consider Orientation the first step our office takes to help you succeed,

but our efforts continue beyond this session.

Through our other programs, like Eagle Camp and First-Year Experience (FYE), you will continue to make new friends, discover UNT traditions and learn how to make the most

out of your college experience. We also have the Transfer Center which is distinctively designed

to support the specific needs of transfer students. To learn more about or office and what we

have to offer you, check out our section on pages 23-29.

The Office of New Student and Student Success Programs is only one of many members

of the University community that is here to help you succeed. This magazine is designed to

highlight some of the offices, departments and companies so you are more aware of the resources

they offer you as a new North Texan. From academic success tools, to involvement opportunities

and banks that can do more than just hold your money, this publication should serve as a guide to

the University and the surrounding Denton community. As you begin to make North Texas your

home, we encourage you to take advantage of and use these resources… they will help to ensure

a thriving and rewarding UNT experience.

We are confident that you will enjoy the time you spend at UNT and we look forward to

welcoming you back to campus soon.

Refunds

The University of North Texas has partnered with Higher One, Inc., a financial services company focused solely on higher education to bring this new method of refund disbursement to our students. Founded in 2000, Higher One provides higher education institutions with efficient, convenient and easy to use solutions to handle financial disbursements.

Students can select one of three options to receive their refund. "Easy Refund" a co-branded Higher One/MasterCard debit account for the card; ACH, whereby the student may have the funds sent directly to their personal bank account, or paper check which will be mailed to the student's designated mailing address on their myUNT account. Students will receive their UNT Debit Card in the mail. Do not throw the card away! You will need it to select your refund preference.

1. When you receive your UNT Debit Card, log on to www.untdebitcard.com. 2. Enter your 16 digit debit card number in the spaces provided. 3. Select your refund option.

1purchase

As a new semester begins, hope springs eternal, and you’re ready to spring into the academic action. But you can’t do that without books. New, used (sold at a discount), digital or downloadable. If your classes require them, we carry them. And if you really want to go the extra mile, we have all the books not required, but recommended by your professors.

2class

Let’s say you enrolled in Advanced Swahili when Introductory Swahili is really more your speed. It won’t take you long to realize your mistake. And the good news is, we’ll generally accept returns on textbooks one week after the start of classes. We’ll print the last day for text returns on your receipt. Even after this date, we’ll gladly buy a book back from you See the buyback section for details.

4value

Follett publishes The Follett Blue Book of wholesale textbook values for all college bookstores. Why does this matter to you? Because it’s what ensures that you receive a fair price for the books you sell back. If an instructor on campus re-adopts a book, we’ll generally buy it back for half the new price. If not, we’ll try to sell it to another bookstore and give you the wholesale price. On the rare occasions when there is no longer any demand for a book, unfortunately, no bookstore will be able to buy it back.

5 buyback

Prime book buyback time is during finals. That’s when we know the most about what we need for next semester, and have the least inventory. Which means you’re likely to get the best price on what you sell back. We have a big buyback event, and after you’ve breathed a sigh of relief over finishing finals, you can stop by and make a little money to celebrate in style.

the life of a textbook

3adoption

When a professor chooses the text-book for a class it’s called an adoption. They may decide to use the exact same textbooks you’re using now—after all, Shakespeare hasn’t changed much in 400 years. Or, to keep up with new in-formation and viewpoints, they may choose an updated edition or a brand new book. When they let the bookstore know of their plans, they “adopt” a book. A book that will soon be making an appearance on a syllabus near you.
