Those are two things the ETSU softball team has worked on this preseason. Those two goals were lost a year ago after jumping out to their best start in school history (15-5), but at the end the Lady Bucs finished 27-28.

However, a new season is upon the Lady Bucs, and they will be led by their five senior leaders both on and off the field. The class of Cheniece Cason (Moreno Valley, Calif.), Darci Gilbert (Murfreesboro, Tenn.), Marissa Hardy (Rocklin, Calif.), Katy Jett (Talbott, Tenn.) and Trisha Massenzo (Russellville, Tenn.) has meant so much to this program since arriving in Johnson City three years ago; however, this strong group wants to go out on top and lay the foundation for years to come.

“I have been telling the seniors throughout the preseason that this is their team,” commented head coach Andrea Mangrum. “These five ladies have the opportunity to go out on top and have everyone remember how they laid the foundation of a winning program.”

Along with the five key seniors, ETSU returns six total starters and 11 letterwinners from a year ago. Joining the five are Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team selection Amy Campbell (Chattanooga, Tenn.), freshman outfielder Annie Martin (Centerville, Tenn.) and catcher/third baseman Katie Henderson (Jackson, Tenn.).

The Lady Bucs lost key components in Jessie Hackworth (Clinton, Tenn.), Kate Powell (Johnson City), Cat Zyskowski (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Vicki McCoy (Ringgold, Ga.), but ETSU filled the void by bringing in seven fresh faces in 2010.

“We lost a lot of power and speed with our senior class a year ago, but I felt my staff and I did a great job bringing in players to fill in those gaps,” commented Mangrum. “Overall this freshman class will have a chance to fight for starting positions and playing time when the preseason begins in January.”

With the Lady Bucs playing their second season in the newly constructed stadium, having key senior leadership and a deep bench, the sky is the limit for ETSU in 2010.

“Our team has one goal and one goal only – win a conference championship,” said Mangrum. “The road getting there won’t be an easy one; however, if we play fundamentally sound ball and stay focused as a team we are capable of making anything happen.”

PiTChErS And CATChErS The one area ETSU has strength and numbers is with its battery of pitchers and catchers. Seniors Marissa Hardy and Darci Gilbert are the catalysts in the circle while Trisha Massenzo hasn’t lost a step with the play calling behind the plate. Over the last two years Hardy has combined for 36 of ETSU’s 57 wins and Massenzo has started 147 of the 173 games over the last three years. Hardy, who holds the Lady Bucs’ single season record for wins (19) and strikeouts (255), also fanned a program-best 16 batters against Presbyterian as a sophomore in 2008. Meanwhile, Massenzo led the club with 10 doubles and 28 RBIs in 2009 and has only missed four games in the last two years.

Joining Hardy in the circle is Gilbert, a right-handed hurler out of Murfreesboro, Tenn. Gilbert was on pace to have her best season in 2009, but shoulder injuries placed her on the disabled list throughout the major part of the conference race. The Murfreesboro native jumped out to a quick 6-2 start, but finished

the year 8-7 however, she recorded a stellar 2.06 ERA (33 ER/112.0 IP). After having successful shoulder surgery in the off-season, Gilbert looks to bounce back and finish her Lady Buccaneer career on a positive note in ’10.

“Marissa and Darci are the go-to pitchers on our staff this season,” commented Mangrum. “They have the most D-I experience and their mental toughness will come into play when we face some strong competition. We expect both of these senior pitchers to produce in their final year and help this team win ballgames.”

Junior Katie Henderson will also share duties with Massenzo behind the plate. Henderson enters her third year with the Lady Bucs and will also be counted on to play third.

Back in the circle the Lady Bucs can also call to junior newcomer Jessica Duncan (Ooltewah, Tenn.) and second-year player Shelby Morris (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.). Duncan gives ETSU some experience as she helped guide Chattanooga State to its first-ever #1 ranking in the NJCAA Poll, an FCCJ Tournament title, and a 60-win campaign in 2009. The Ooltewah native also posted a perfect season in the circle – going 13-0 with a 1.32 ERA (20 ER/105.2 IP). Meanwhile, after gaining a year of Division I experience, Morris hopes to battle for more innings as a sophomore. The Mt. Juliet native made six appearances (one start) and tossed 8.1 innings as a rookie in 2009.

“Both Jessica and Shelby bring a different style of pitching to the team,” added Mangrum. “They pitched a lot of innings for us in the fall, and that added experience will pay off once the season begins in February. We look to use both of them in certain game situations to keep the opposition off balance.”

inFiELdThe Lady Buccaneer infield consists of a solid mixture of veterans and rookies. The middle infield slots will be filled by senior Cheniece Cason at short and sophomore Amy Campbell (Chattanooga, Tenn.) at second. Cason has been one of the most reliable players for the Lady Bucs since arriving in 2007 – making 118 consecutive starts and playing in 172 of the 173 games over the last three seasons. In addition, Cason is coming off her best season in an ETSU uniform in 2009 – hitting a team best .345 (57-165). Campbell, meanwhile, can also see time at third, as she will share duties with Katie Henderson and freshman Arielle Garner (Buchanan, Ga.). Garner can also play the other corner at first, while Trisha Massenzo will fill the gap when she is not called in to catch. Garner is a very versatile player as she played third, short, first and pitched at both Bremen and Central high schools. The Buchanan native was selected Player of the Year in Carroll County as a senior and Most Valuable Offensive Player as a sophomore.

In addition to Campbell, a pair of freshmen will be used at second with Lucy Schneider (Dade City, Fla.) and Sam Lower (Sebring, Fla.) handling the chores. Schneider, who can also play short, is a valuable commodity with her bat, speed and defense. The Dade City, Florida, native hit .495 (48-for-97) with 10 doubles, three triples, three home runs and 35 RBIs as a senior at Pasco High School. The standout player helped the Pirates not only with her bat, but also her speed, as Schneider was 32-for-33 in stolen base opportunities in 2009.

“Our infield rotation will be based on who steps up and wants the job,” commented Mangrum. “We have some key players who will contribute on a daily basis, but at other positions we will go with the hot bat and who is playing well.”

OUTFiELdTwo of ETSU’s three outfield positions are filled with sophomore Annie Martin (Centerville, Tenn.) taking the lead in left and senior Katy Jett covering ground in center. Like Cason, Jett has also been consistent as she can be, starting in 171 of the 173 games played in her career. Jett has been a solid hitter for the Lady Bucs over the last three years, as her .347 batting average in 2008 ranks third all-time and her .337 clip a year ago was the fifth highest in program history. Martin and Jett are a strong one-two combo as they cover a lot of ground and their strong arms pose issues for opposing base runners.

“Katy and Annie are two solid outfielders as we enter the 2010 season,” said Mangrum. “Their speed and strong arms are a valuable asset in left and center, and they are capable of making plays at any given time. They both play very well together.”

The starting right field position will be a battle between three Lady Buccaneer players. Sophomore Marlina Delisa (Tucson, Ariz.), Tara Hartnett (Snellville, Ga.) and Jessica Duncan will contend for the starting job and can possibly split time in the gap depending on productivity in the position. In addition to those three, freshmen Whitley Hensley (Erwin, Tenn.) and Mikayla Treadway (Unicoi, Tenn.) will both compete for playing time in the outfield.

SChEdULE When looking at the 2010 ETSU softball schedule two words come to mind – “Road Warriors.”

The Lady Bucs, who kick off the season with 24 consecutive road games, face six teams from NCAA Tournament play a year ago.

“I think playing 24 straight road games will bring this team closer,” added Mangrum. “We wanted try to utilize our new stadium early in the season, but due to the weather conditions in East Tennessee we are forced to play in warmer climates.”

ETSU kicks off the season playing in five tournaments – which begins on Feb. 13 in Charlotte, N.C. The Lady Bucs open up the campaign with BIG EAST foe St. John’s at 11 a.m. Along with the Red Storm, ETSU will also play Liberty and the host 49ers.

Following their stint in Charlotte, the Lady Bucs make the trip to Greenville, S.C., for a doubleheader with Furman on Feb. 17.

From there, the Lady Bucs continue with tournament play in Atlanta where ETSU collides with Temple, Eastern Illinois and Georgia State. The Panther Invitational takes place from Feb. 20-21 inside Georgia State’s Bob Heck Field.

The Lady Bucs finally play their first set of games inside the Volunteer state in 2010 when ETSU makes the journey to Chattanooga. ETSU goes head-to-head with Central Connecticut State and Ball State on Feb. 26; while taking on in-state rival and 2009 NCAA Participant – UT-Martin – along with BIG EAST foe Rutgers on Feb. 27. The Lady Bucs close out competition at the Frost Classic with another in-state counterpart – Tennessee Tech – on Sunday, Feb. 28.

ETSU wraps up its tournament play when the Lady Bucs make their longest road trip in school history, and seniors Marissa Hardy and Cheniece Cason make a visit to their home state of California from March 5-13. During this span, the Lady Bucs will play in two tournaments – one in Riverside and the other in Fresno. The pair of tournaments include games with four teams who appeared in postseason play last year – including the opening game with Big 10 opponent Ohio State on March 5 in Riverside. Joining ETSU in Riverside are the host Highlanders (March 5), and BIG EAST foe and

NCAA Tournament participant Notre Dame (March 6). The Lady Bucs then travel north to Fresno to play in the Bayer CropScience Classic – marking their final regular season tournament of the campaign. While in Fresno, ETSU takes on host Fresno State (March 11), Cal State Northridge and Georgetown (March 12). Then, ETSU plays Colorado State and Mississippi State on March 13.

“I feel all four of these tournaments will test the girls each and every weekend,” Mangrum said. ”Each tournament features teams from the top conferences, and opponents who reached the NCAA Tournament last season. I always feel in order to become stronger you have to play teams that are very successful, and I believe this format achieves that goal in 2010.”

After the 24-game road trip – which covers four tournaments in four different states – the Lady Bucs finally say hello to Johnson City when ETSU hosts Presbyterian in its home-opener on March 20.

“The home-opener is always an exciting game, and I am sure the team will be ready to protect their home turf,” mentioned Mangrum. “The early road games are critical, so we can enter the home opener on a high note and have the stadium filled for the game against Presbyterian.”

The homestand doesn’t last long for the Lady Bucs, as Mangrum’s squad embarks on a three-game road swing to close out the month of March. ETSU begins Atlantic Sun Conference play with a series in the Music City against Lipscomb (March 26) and Belmont (March 27). The Lady Bucs conclude their road trip with the short trip over the mountain to Boone to play Appalachian State on March 31.

“Opening A-Sun play in Nashville is a good test for our team,” said Mangrum. “Playing on the road is never easy, but adding in-state and conference rivals to the mix makes things much more difficult. It’s very important to get off to a hot start in conference play, because that will set the tone for the rest of the season.”

Once again the Lady Bucs return home for a brief two-game home-stand when conference contenders Stetson and FGCU visit the newly built ETSU Softball Complex. The Lady Bucs host the Hatters on April 2 and Eagles on April 3.

During the final stretch of the season, the Lady Bucs split time both at home and on the road. ETSU travels to Blacksburg for a night game with Virginia Tech on April 6, before heading down to Florida for a critical A-Sun showdown with Jacksonville (April 9) and North Florida (April 10). Other road swings include a trip to North Carolina for games at UNC Central and a doubleheader against A-Sun Champion Campbell on April 22.

Following a trip to USC Upstate on April 25, the Lady Bucs wrap up regular season play with a three-series homestand starting on April 28 against Western Carolina. In addition to the Catamounts, ETSU hosts former A-Sun rival Gardner-Webb (May 1) and Big South and 2009 NCAA participant Radford on May 7.

The Atlantic Sun Tournament and automatic bid to the NCAA Regional will again take place in DeLand, Fla., as Stetson hosts the top six teams. The only team not eligible in 2010 are the Eagles from Florida Gulf Coast. The double-elimination tournament begins on May 13-15 at Patricia Wilson Field.

“The team knows what the goal is entering the season, and they know the journey to an A-Sun Championship won’t be easy,” said Mangrum. “They know the hard work in the fall and preseason will eventually pay off when the regular season rolls around. We can’t take any opponent lightly and have to play fundamentally smart ball each time we take the field. If we follow this recipe, we know our goals can be reached.”

Head CoachFifth SeasonBelhaven ‘02

The 2010 season will mark head coach Andrea Mangrum’s fifth season at the helm of the ETSU Lady Buccaneer softball program.

Over the course of her first five years with the Lady Bucs, Mangrum has guided ETSU to four consecutive Atlantic Sun Tournament appearances, a program-best 30-win season, notched career win number 100, and guided the team to the best start in program history at 15-5 in 2009.

Last season the Lady Bucs stormed out of the gates and jumped out to their best start in program history – picking up wins over Big East foe Syracuse and ACC contender Boston College. For the second straight year Mangrum saw Marissa Hardy and her ETSU pitching staff make history by setting six new program records, as well as tossing the Lady Bucs’ first-ever perfect game back on April 4 inside the newly built ETSU Softball Complex. At the end of the year, Mangrum saw Annie Martin and Hardy receive Atlantic Sun Player of the Week honors, while Amy Campbell was voted to the Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team.

While Mangrum’s club was getting it done on the field in their newly constructed 500-seat stadium in 2009, the Lady Bucs were also making the grade in the classroom. Thirteen of Mangrum’s 17 players were selected to the A-Sun All-Academic Team; while ETSU posted a 3.34 GPA in the spring and had an overall GPA of 3.32 for the year.

Since Mangrum took over the reins in 2006, she has made strides in increasing the win total for those first three seasons – including a program-best 30-win campaign in 2008. After reaching the 100-win plateau in 2009, Mangrum looks to guide the Lady Bucs to their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance in 2010. In addition to the winningest season in ETSU history in 2008, Mangrum also reached the 100-win milestone with the Lady Bucs’ 5-2 win over Howard back on Feb. 29, 2008.

Mangrum’s team was one game away from reaching the 2008 Atlantic Sun Championship game as a number four seed. Mangrum’s small-ball philosophy paid off, as the Lady Bucs set school records with 95 stolen bases and 61 sacrifice hits. Meanwhile, the ETSU pitching staff also stepped up in a big way thanks to the strong arm of Marissa Hardy. Hardy and the Lady Buccaneer pitchers set a season record with 353 strikeouts and Hardy also set five individual marks as well. Hardy also joined teammates Katy Jett and Jessie Hackworth as 2008 Atlantic Sun All-Tournament Team members.

In 2007, Mangrum’s club boasted the best offensive season in program history en route to earning the third seed in the Atlantic Sun Tournament, which marked the best slot in Lady Buccaneer history.

As a team, Mangrum’s club set school records in batting average (.280), runs (247), RBIs (213), slugging percentage (.401), on-base percentage (.340), and sacrifice hits (54). The Lady Buc bats were also on fire during their 18 conference games. ETSU led the A-Sun in every offensive statistical category in 2007.

After opening the 2007 season with a demanding 17-game road swing, which included games against top-ranked programs at South Florida, Washington, Wisconsin and Hofstra, Mangrum’s crew finally enjoyed play at home and in conference. ETSU stormed out of the gates in A-Sun play as it won nine of its first 12 games and took over first place by sweeping Jacksonville on April 13. During the stellar play, the Lady Bucs also posted a Nashville sweep by bombing Belmont and at the time first-place Lipscomb in Johnson City. During the four-game win streak (eventually reached a season-high six after JU), ETSU set new school records by posting 48 runs and 47 hits. The explosive offense led to Stephanie Gaynord being named ETSU’s first conference Player of the Week winner in ’07. Teammate Marissa Hardy became the second winner after earning both wins over the Dolphins and followed that up by tossing the program’s first-ever no-hitter the very next day (after receiving the honor). In total, Mangrum coached four Lady Buccaneer players to conference awards, including Stephanie Gaynord and Amanda Haverman to First Team All-Atlantic Sun honors, and Cheniece Cason and Katy Jett to the Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team. Gaynord was also voted to the Atlantic Sun All-Tournament Team; while Jett was named Atlantic Sun All-Second Team as well.

In her initial year, Mangrum’s club closed out the 2006 campaign on a hot streak, winning seven of its last eight regular season games to earn the fifth seed in the conference tournament. At the A-Sun Tournament Mangrum had the Lady Bucs playing solid ball, as they knocked off fourth-seed Campbell and finished one win away from reaching the championship game. Mangrum’s squad was also the only team in the conference to sweep Stetson, the best team in the league. Mangrum helped coach Mary Catherine Vercoe, Stephanie Gaynord and Jessica Lonsinger to A-Sun accolades. Vercoe was named to the A-Sun All-

Freshman Team, while Gaynord and Lonsinger were named to the conference All-Tournament Team.

Even though coach Mangrum has only five years under her belt with ETSU, she is certainly no stranger to Northeast Tennessee. Mangrum, who is originally from Kingsport, was a member of ETSU’s inaugural softball team in 2001, and returned to Johnson City after a three-year coaching stint at Belhaven College, in Jackson, Miss., where she served as an assistant during the 2003 season and moved to the helm of the program for the next two seasons in 2004.

Mangrum began her coaching career as an assistant varsity/head junior varsity coach at Dobyns-Bennett High School in Kingsport, before moving to The Veritas School in Jackson, Miss., where she started the first fast pitch softball program in school history. Upon moving to Belhaven, Mangrum led the team to a school-record 28 wins in 2004 and proved her recruiting skills by signing 12 student-athletes within three months of taking over the program. In her two seasons at Belhaven, Mangrum posted a 48-52 record.

“I am excited to be back home and coaching,” said Mangrum. “I am really excited to be able to make an impact in the town I grew up in.”

Mangrum took over the ETSU reins from former head coach Amy Fuller who posted a 78-96 record over three seasons with the Bucs.

As a player, Mangrum started in 39 of ETSU’s 49 games in 2001, when the team posted 14 victories in its first season of competition. As a middle infielder, Mangrum recorded a .924 fielding percentage with 96 putouts and 61 assists in her lone season with the Bucs. Prior to ETSU, Mangrum played at Chattanooga for two seasons.

At UTC, Mangrum played for Ralph and Karen Weekly, current head coach at the University of Tennessee. She also spent three summers playing international softball in Mexico, El Salvador, Guatemala, Venezuela, and Austria. In the summer of 2002, Mangrum was named the hitting MVP of the Austrian National League as she batted over .600. During her senior year in high school, Mangrum was invited to play international ball in Central America on a college-level team. On each international stint, her team played the national clubs in each country they visited.

Mangrum also devotes her time to helping out with softball clinics and is very active in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) as she is the Huddle Coach here at ETSU. She has also instructed at the University of Tennessee and Baylor University softball camps.

In August, Mangrum revamped her staff as she brought in Virginia Tech graduate Callie Rhodes to guide the ETSU slap hitters and fielders. Mangrum’s sister, Laura Roberts, will also be a volunteer assistant to the program.

“I think we have a great mix in our staff, which will be a tool for the success of our program,” said Mangrum. “I want this program to earn the respect that it deserves, and represent ETSU with character and integrity. When we do that on and off the field, we will see a lot success.”

Andrea is married to Joel Mangrum, who is the assistant baseball coach at Austin Peay.

Assistant CoachThird SeasonBYU ‘05

Ariel Beus enters her third season as the Lady Bucs’ pitching coach in 2010.

In her first two years with the Lady Bucs, Beus brought in a winning attitude to the team, and her pitchers helped break numerous school records.

In 2009, her ETSU pitching staff set six new program marks. Led by the ace of the staff, Marissa Hardy, ETSU broke single-season records in ERA (2.23), shutouts (15), hits (337), runs (153), earned runs (119), and opponent batting average (.240). In addition to setting those marks, Beus saw Hardy and sophomore right-hander Shelby Morris make history for the Lady Bucs. The dominate duo tossed ETSU’s first-ever perfect game, as they combined to blank UNC Central on April 4.

Beus’ first season was highlighted by the dominant performance of Hardy and, as a staff, the Lady Bucs broke the single season strikeout record (353). Meanwhile, Hardy broke five Lady Buccaneer pitching records – including the single game strikeout mark of 16 against Presbyterian on March 26. To add to the list, Hardy also broke the single season records in wins (19), IP (223.1), appearances (41), and strikeouts (255). Hardy also tied a program record by posting five of ETSU’s eight shutouts in 2008.

“I feel the timing is perfect for Ariel’s arrival to our program,” Mangrum said. “We are on an uphill climb and her expertise with not only pitching, but also speed and conditioning training will be the extra boost we need to make it the rest of the way.”

Beus was an assistant at Mountain View High School (Boise, Idaho) last year, as well as a private pitching instructor. The BYU standout led her team to the Mountain West Conference Championship in 2001 and 2005 as well as two NCAA regional appearances. Beus was the first player from BYU to be named the Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week. Beus started out as the Sports Clinic Director at Tahoe City Public Utility District in Tahoe City, Calif., in 2005.

“Ariel has played at a very high level and been successful, so she knows what it takes to get there,” added Mangrum. “Her success will bring a

new attitude of winning to our team. She also believes in our program’s foundational values of faith, family, education, and softball. These intangibles will bring great depth to the character of our program.”

Beus earned her B.S. in exercise science from BYU in 2005. Beus, a native of Houston, Texas, is married to Lance Beus, a former Seattle Mariner. Ariel and Lance have an infant daughter Kendall.

“Ariel’s husband Lance, a 2005 Seattle Mariner draft pick, brings another added benefit because of his level of competition at that level,” said Mangrum. “I am thrilled to have them both as a part of the family here at ETSU.”

Callie Rhodes enters her first season with the Lady Bucs in 2010. Rhodes will take over a plethora of duties such as: speed training, recruiting, outfield workouts and assisting the slap hitters.

Rhodes, who was a four-year letterwinner at Virginia Tech, graduated as the Hokies’ all-time leader in career and single-season stolen bases. Currently, Rhodes ranks second all-time in career stolen bases, but she is the only Virginia Tech player in school history to record 30 or more stolen bases in three separate seasons. In her four-year playing career, Rhodes played in 225 games (195 starts) and hit .315 with 102 runs scored and 113 steals. Rhodes also had a hand in leading the Hokies to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in 2006 and 2007, as well as guiding Virginia Tech to the 2007 ACC Championship title.

“The hire of Callie is another step toward a championship season for our program,” said Mangrum. “She brings a new dynamic

to our team with her expertise in speed, slapping, and strength and conditioning. Along with her defensive specialty in the outfield, she will assist in the efforts of taking this program to the next level. Her experiences at Virginia Tech and

playing in the Big East and ACC will bring a wealth of knowledge to our program.”

Not only did Rhodes excel on the field for the Hokies, but she was a scholar in the classroom. Rhodes earned a B.A. in Communications from Virginia Tech where she graduated Magna Cum Laude in 2007, and was also selected to the Big East and ACC All-Academic teams. On the field, Rhodes was named to the 2007 All-ACC Second Team (Designated Player) and the NFCA All-Northeast Region Second Team. In addition, the speedster was a two-time VaSID All-State First Team selection and a five-time Strength and Conditioning Softball Athlete of the Year recipient.

“I am most pleased with her character and reputation as a player, because she fits the mold of the foundations of our program,” commented Mangrum. “To me, this is more important than knowledge and experience.”

After posting a program-tying fourth consecutive winning season, ETSU women’s basketball made history by making its second consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2008-09. The Lady Bucs, who boasted the number one seed in the Atlantic Sun Tournament, defeated Mercer and Jacksonville en route to being tabbed the No. 13 seed in the Berkeley Region. ETSU set a new school record with 16 conference victories and tallied its third straight 20-win season after finishing the campaign at 20-11. Four Lady Bucs were rewarded for their hard work on the court, as Siarre Evans was named the 2009 Atlantic Sun Player of the Year, while Latisha Belcher received Atlantic Sun Defensive Player of the Year honors. In addition, TaRonda Wiles was named First All-Conference and Gwen Washington was selected to the Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team. Meanwhile, Evans also cleaned up at the A-Sun Tournament by being tabbed Tournament MVP and was also named a Finalist on the NCAA Division I State Farm Coaches’ All-America Basketball Team.

Back-To-Back

In 2008-09, the ETSU men’s basketball team continued to build on its long-standing tradition of success, capturing the 2009 Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament Championship. With that victory, the Buccaneers

made their eighth trip all-time to the NCAA Tournament, while bringing home the 26th overall championship in program history. More recently, ETSU has now enjoyed four 20-win seasons in the last seven years, having won

conference titles in each of those four campaigns.

Dancing Again

A year removed from earning its first-ever NCAA Tournament win, the ETSU men’s tennis team continued to dominate play winning its fourth straight A-Sun Regular Season crown, while dropping league rival Stetson 4-2, for its third straight A-Sun Tournament title and NCAA Tournament berth. In addition to its seventh NCAA Tournament appearance the No. 61-ranked Bucs swept through the conference awards as head coach Yaser Zaatini was named the 2009 A-Sun Coach of the Year, while senior Enrique Olivares was again named the A-Sun Men’s Tennis Player of the Year and tournament MVP for the second consecutive season. Overall, the Bucs placed six total players on the all-conference teams in addition to running its current A-Sun winning streak to 34 straight wins.

BLUEThe ETSU men’s cross country/track and field program joined an elite group in 2008-09, as the Bucs were only one of five Division I programs to win the “Triple Crown.” The Bucs began leg one of their quest on the first Saturday in November when ETSU held off Belmont for its first A-Sun crown and 21st overall conference championship. ETSU, who defeated the Bruins by six points (29 to 35), brought its first cross country championship back to Johnson City since winning the crown in 1996. Then, on the third weekend of February, the Bucs completed leg two of the Trifecta run, as ETSU knocked off reigning conference champion Kennesaw State and hoisted the A-Sun Indoor Championship crown for the third time in the last four years. The “Triple Crown” was finally completed in mid-May when the Buccaneer squad overcame many obstacles – and once again – held off Kennesaw State to claim its second outdoor title since joining the league in 2005-06. The ETSU distance runners had a huge hand in winning the championship, as the Bucs went 1-thru-3 in the 5000m and 1-thru-4 in the 10000m.

Head coach Steve Brooks’ squad returned to the Big Dance for the second time in school history, after winning both the regular season and A-Sun Tournament titles over league rival Stetson. Despite a first-round NCAA Tournament loss to in-state rival and host Tennessee, the Lady Bucs rolled to their best overall season in program history, placing four members on the all-conference team, while senior Tara Byrne (MVP), junior Yevgenyia Stupak and sophomore Tara Sheets earned all-tournament honors.

Seamus PowerPower, who was part of an ETSU awards sweep as the Freshman of the Year in 2007 (with Warren and Rhys Davies), became the third Buccaneer to win the conference Player of the Year. Power and former teammates Davies (2006-07) and Gareth Shaw (2008) combined to put an ETSU stranglehold on the league’s top individual honor over the last four years. He joins Jacksonville State’s Matias Anselmo as the only two in Atlantic Sun history to win both the Freshman of the Year and Player of the Year in a career. The Waterford, Ireland native shared Medalist honors at the Larry Nelson Collegiate Invitational and placed second at the Kauai Collegiate Cup. In addition to the A-Sun honor Power became the eighth person in ETSU men’s golf history to receive All-America honors as he was named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar.

Michael StewartIn winning the Freshman of the Year award, Stewart followed in the footsteps of teammates Power and Rhys Enoch (Cornwall, England) as the third straight Buccaneer to capture the honor. At last month’s A-Sun Championships, he rallied from four strokes down entering the final round to catch and pass fellow freshman, Campbell’s Vaita Guillaume, thanks to three consecutive birdies on his closing nine holes. His win marked the third in a row for a Buccaneer, following Power in 2007 and Shaw in 2008. His win at the

A-Sun Championships carried him to a unanimous spot on both the All-

Atlantic Sun First-Team and All-Freshman Team.

Fred WarrenThe Bucs legendary golf coach picked up his ninth Coach of the Year award in 2009. Overall, the Hall-of-Famer coach has won the A-Sun award twice, to go along with the seven he totaled while in the Southern Conference. Under Warren’s direction the Bucs earned their 18th trip to the NCAA Championships this past May.Yaser Zaatini

After losing four seniors off of the 2008 Bucs squad head coach Yaser Zaatini responded by leading ETSU through one of the toughest

schedules in the entire nation. After coaching ETSU to its sixth straight unbeaten conference season and wins over four ITA-ranked teams, Zaatini was honored for the second straight season as the A-Sun Coach of the Year. Overall, it was

Zaatini’s third “Coach of the Year” honor by the A-Sun and fifth overall (SoCon 2004, 2005)The Bucs earned their third straight NCAA Tournament appearance after dropping league foe Stetson, 4-2 for its third straight A-Sun Tournament title.

Tara ByrneAfter leading the ETSU women’s tennis team to its

second NCAA Tournament appearance senior Tara Byrne received the prestigious Southeast Region ITA/NCAA Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award. The First-Team All-A-Sun member and tournament MVP also became the second player in program history to surpass 100 career wins. Back on April 13, 2009, the local Johnson City native became ETSU’s all-time career wins leader, passing Masha Illina’s mark of 103 victories. Overall the four-time all-conference member and team captain

left ETSU with 107 career wins, which tops all players in the A-Sun this past season.

Yevgenyia StupakStupak continued to impress in her junior season leading the Lady Bucs to a share of their third regular season championship and second A-Sun Tournament title. Overall, Stupak rolled to an impressive 30-6 singles mark, picking up wins against players from 16 ITA-ranked teams. In addition to a remarkable 23-9 doubles record, Stupak was the highest ranked ITA player in the conference, which helped earn her the 2009 A-Sun Women’s Player of the Year award.

Ben Ronoh ETSU track and field newcomer Ben Ronoh lived up to the hype after helping the Bucs win the “Triple Crown” in 2008-09. The native from Sotik, Kenya was named Most Outstanding Track Performer at both the indoor and outdoor conference championships. At the Atlantic Sun Indoor Championships, Ronoh swept the 3000m and 5000m events on the David E. Walker track inside Memorial Center and was named the league’s top performer. The sophomore distance runner made it a clean sweep after winning the steeplechase and finishing second (behind his cousin Kenneth Rotich) in the 5000m and 10000m at the Atlantic Sun Outdoor Championships in Jacksonville, Fla.

Enrique OlivaresOverall, Olivares closed out his career as not just one of the top men’s tennis players in

program history, but as one of the most decorated student-athletes in the history of intercollegiate athletics at ETSU. The second winningest player in school

history wrapped up his career with a remarkable 115 wins, including posting an

Atlantic Sun Conference record-setting mark of 32-1(.969 winning percentage). The four-time A-Sun First-Team member and two-time A-Sun Player of the Year, became the highest ranked ITA preseason player in

school and league history in 2008 as the No. 9-ranked ITA singles player in the nation. The three-time A-Sun Tournament MVP, again led the Bucs to their fourth straight A-Sun Regular Season title and a third consecutive NCAA Tournament berth. A mainstay in the national rankings since arriving in the Tri-Cites, Olivares held 14 career wins against nationally ITA ranked players.

Kenneth Rotich Kenneth Rotich, a three-time Cross Country Athlete of the Week winner, was named the Atlantic Sun Runner of the Year after winning the conference championship with a time of 24:34 in Macon, Ga. The native of Nairobi, Kenya helped the Bucs win their 21st cross country title in school history and was the first ETSU runner to win a championship since 1995. In total, Rotich won three races in 2008 and moved his current running total of A-Sun Athlete of the Week honors to six, which marks a new conference best.

Heidi DahlDahl was an outstanding track and field athlete in 2008-09, as she represented ETSU at both the Indoor and Outdoor NCAA Championships. The Orem, Utah, native became the first Lady Buccaneer student-athlete to receive All-America honors since 2000 at the Outdoor Championships, as she finished sixth in the 1500m run. In addition, Dahl claimed the NCAA Mideast Regional Championship in the 1500m at Louisville. Dahl, who won the Atlantic Sun Championship in the mile (indoor), 800m (outdoor) and 1500m (outdoor), was also a five-time A-Sun Athlete of the Week winner. The senior runner ran a leg in both the indoor and outdoor conference championship 4x400-meter relay. In total, Dahl contributed for 29 percent of the Lady Bucs’ scoring at the outdoor conference championships and was named Most Outstanding Track Performer at the post-race ceremony.

Siarre Evans Since arriving in Johnson City in the fall of

2006, rising senior Siarre Evans hasn’t disappointed the Lady Buccaneer faithful. After adding Atlantic Sun Freshman Player of the Year, First Team All-Conference, Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team and Atlantic Sun

All-Tournament Team accolades to her resume in her first two seasons, Evans

continued to impress in 2008-09. The Griffin, Ga., native, who became only the 16th ETSU player of all-time to reach the 1,000-point club and lead the conference with 16.4 ppg and 10.3 rpg, was named the 2009

Atlantic Sun Player of the Year and Atlantic Sun Tournament MVP. Furthermore, Evans’ stellar play placed her as a finalist on the NCAA Division I State Farm Coaches’ All-America Basketball Team.

The 2008-09 season saw many impressive feats out of Reeder as he defeated ACC foe Virginia Tech in his first career start, while throwing a complete game and hitting for the cycle in the same week. Reeder also came in to get the save against Tennessee on the road to complete a sweep of the Vols. Reeder was a unanimous selection for the Atlantic Sun All-Freshman Team, was named the A-Sun Player of the Week and made the College Baseball Foundation National All-Star Lineup on March 23.

Over the past decade one of the biggest changes in collegiate athletics has been the new attitude toward strength and conditioning. ETSU’s success on the field could not have happened without the hard work and dedication of each student-athlete in the weightroom. Under the direction of head strength coach Lee Morrow, who is currently in his 25th season at ETSU, the Buccaneers have earned eight Gatorade/National Strength Coaches Association All-American Team honors. With its recent collaboration with the Sports Performance Enhancement Consortium (SPEC) ETSU’s strength and conditioning program has focused its efforts on helping each student-athlete reach his/her greatest athletic potential, in the areas of strength, speed, agility and injury prevention. Located inside Memorial Center, the ETSU’s strength and conditioning complex features one of the finest weightrooms in the area. Overall, the Buccaneers have access to a 7,200-foot facility that features state-of-the-art equipment, including customized full power racks, Hammer-Strength machines, including bench press, incline press, military press, rowing machines, speed mats, pull-up and other impressive array of sports performance tools. Through the SPEC and strength and conditioning web site, ETSU student-athletes have 24-hour access to workout plans, nutrition, and other information that monitors each individual or team off-season conditioning program.

The Center of Excellence for Sport Science and Coach Education

The Center of Excellence was established July 1, 2008, and is housed in the College of Education. It incorporates three very important aspects of competitive sports: education, service, and research. The former Sport Performance Enhancement Consortium (SPEC) is now a very active branch of the Center of Excellence. The SPEC program continues to be a collaborative effort between Intercollegiate Athletics and the Sport Science Lab in the Department of Kinesiology Leisure and Sport Sciences. Buccaneer student-athletes in collaboration with sport science, sport medicine, and the sport coach have the opportunity to have their program evaluated and monitored throughout their college career. This monitoring and evaluation process produces one of the most advanced training environments in the nation. This type of relationship is not found anywhere in the U.S. and offers a unique opportunity for the advancement of athletic performance, athlete and coach education and sport science research.

The program is dedicated to meeting the following goals: 1. Providing monitoring services for the ETSU sport

teams2. Supporting and providing up-to-date information to

coaches regarding coaching practices. 3. Advising on the Training Process4. Providing an opportunity for the interaction

between sport scientists, medical staff, strength and conditioning staff and the ETSU Sport Coaches.
