BREEDING GUARANTEE
Females: Cows represented as being “safe in calf” will have been examined and declared safe. They are considered breeders without further guarantee. Cows with calves at side shall be considered breeders. Cows and heifers represented as bred or exposed are not guaranteed as “safe in calf” but they and the open heifers selling are guaranteed to be breeders. No guarantee shall apply to calves not yet weaned. No guarantee is given that bred females will deliver a live calf. Any animal that ap-pears to be a non-breeder that is sold as guaran-teed to breed should be returned to the seller and after six months if the seller is not able to prove her a breeder, it is the sellers option to refund the purchase price or replace it with an animal of equal value. In cases where the animal is sub-jected to hormonal or surgical reproduction tech-niques after the sale, this guarantee is null and void. This guarantee applies only to the original buyer of the female.
Bulls: Should any bull sixteen months of age or over fail to prove a breeder after being used on cows known to be breeders, the seller will have the option to prove the bull a breeder within six months and if not found to be a breeder to refund the purchase price or replace the animal with an animal of equal value. If a bull becomes a non-breeder by reason of injury, negligence or miss-management the sellers guarantee is void. This breeding guarantee applies to natural service use only, no guarantee is given regarding artificial col-lection, preparation or storage of semen. This guarantee ceases when the bull is disposed of by the original buyer or is used in a herd other than the buyers.
Accidents: Although every precaution will be taken to protect the safety and comfort of the buy-ers, sellers, and other attendees, neither the Lim-ousin Association of Wisconsin nor anyone associ-ated with it shall assume any responsibility in this matter, and each disclaims any liability, legal or otherwise in the event of an accident or less of property. While accidents at cattle sales are rare, each person attending must understand that he/she does so at their own risk.

Whether you’re a new Limousin breeder or con-sider yourself a veteran, NALF’s enhanced registry serv-ices for Lim-Flex hybrids expand the range of cross-breeding solutions you can now offer commercial cus-tomers. With Lim-Flex hybrids, there are geneticoptions to fit every need, from fullblood and purebredLimousin for a “full-shot” of muscle and efficiency, toLim-Flex hybrids for a “blended-shot” of Limousinwith added marbling and maternal from Angus (blackor red). With Lim-Flex, breeders can offer a just-rightshot of Limousin to meet the needs of most any cross-breeding program.
Lim-Flex stands for Limousin with muscle andefficiency, along with flexibility — the most signifi-cant strength of this powerful genetic blend:
■ Flexible seedstock for simple, easily managedcrossbreeding
■ Flexible market progeny that consistently hitdressing percent, along with yield and qualitygrade targets for mainstream, case-ready markets
■ Flexible females adapted for efficiency across awide range of environments
■ FLEX stands for Limousin Efficiency Cross(X) — the beef industry’s answer to profitablesystem-wide production of case ready products
NALF’s UltraMate Xbreeding System outlineshow to use registered Limousin and Lim-Flex seed-stock on different types of commercial cows to hitend-product and maternal targets. This breeder’sguide to Lim-Flex focuses on how to record necessarypedigree and breed composition data required for reg-istry, as well as other policies for Lim-Flex animals.
Recording Lim-Flex — It all starts with the cow
Lim-Flex may be produced from either registeredor unregistered cows with known and documentedbreed composition (Limousin, Angus or Red Angus)and pedigree (sire) information recorded with NALF.
Using registered Limousin cowsto produce Lim-Flex
Recording Lim-Flex calves from registeredLimousin cows is similar to reporting straight-bredLimousin using the blue multiple application forms. The only exception: when recording the sire’s registra-tion number, the proper registration prefix mustaccompany the registration numbers for Angus andRed Angus sires. NALF registration prefixes for Angusand Red Angus animals are AAA and RAA, respective-ly. For example, when recording a calf from an Angussire with the registration number 12345678, the sire’sregistration number should be reported as AAA-12345678.
Many Angus and Red Angus A.I. sires alreadyhave their pedigree information recorded in the NALFherdbook. If registry applications are submitted foranimals out of sires that are not recorded, NALF staffcan obtain the necessary information from the Angusand Red Angus associations. To expedite processingfor such animals, breeders are requested to submitcopies of registration certificates for Angus and RedAngus sires previously unrecorded at NALF.
1
A Breeder’s Guide to
Lim-Flex Breed Composition and Pedigree Specifications1. Animals registered as Lim-Flex must be 25 to 75 percent Limousin and 25 to 75 percent Angus or
Red Angus, with a maximum allowance of another breed or unknown breed composition of 12.5percent (1/8th).Note: Percent Limousin blood is computed using the same NALF calculation and rounding procedures as are used for othercategories of registered Limousin. NALF percent Limousin blood of registered Lim-Flex animals is printed on registration certificatesand performance records. Breed composition requirements for Lim-Flex animals can originate from parents of any percent bloodthat meet the sire and dam specifications listed below.
2. Sires of registered Lim-Flex animals must be registered with NALF or the sire’s respective breedassociation and have documented pedigree information for parents.
3. Dams of registered Lim-Flex animals must be documented as from a registered sire included in either the NALF herd book or that of another breed association and have actual percent bloodinformation recorded.

Guidelines for Management and Care of Yearling Bulls1. Remember, your bull is now only 10-11 months old, even
though he may weigh 1,000 to 1,200 pounds. He has been on a feed test and ration changes should be done gradually. It is good to let them harden up on pasture before breeding season begins. However, the pasture must be good, and they still require extra energy and protein. If turned out on poor pasture or dropped off too fast, they can lose weight rapidly. Research show that this causes a bull to produce poor quality semen and also affects the bull’s libido. It takes 60 days for sperm to develop and mature. Any stress condition during that time can reduce its fertilizing ability.
2. Don’t expect a young bull to compete with older bulls or horned bulls. If intimidated by an older bull, he won’t breed effectively. If handled properly and not dominated by older bulls, a young bull should service 20-25 females his first season. Size of the pasture and terrain also influence this.
3. Limit the breeding season to no more than 60 days on a year-ling bull. If you can’t limit the season, consider rotation to give him a rest.
4. Watch a young bull early in the season to detect any physical problems. A virgin bull can have inadequacies undetectable except through observation.
5. Maintain a good general health program, salt, mineral and fly control.
6. Recondition young bulls after the breeding season to allow them to mature to their genetic capabilities. This is a very critical age as they start losing their teeth at 18-24 months. A young bull consequently eats slower and cannot utilize as rough a feed, or compete for feed, as one with permanent teeth. Worming can make a significant difference as well as a grub and louse control program. Research indicates that a bull’s usefulness as a two year old can be retarded if not properly reconditioned after use as a yearling.
Substantiated by research from NDSU and Larry Corah, Beef Specialist at Kansas State University.
