SEASON OUTLOOK

It is a ¬new era for the Lynn University women’s

soccer program. The team, which graduated eightseniors from last season’s squad, has undergone afacelift of epic proportions. One that in the hopesof head coach Chip Dutchik, will lead the FightingKnights back to the top of not only the SunshineState Conference but the nation.

The aspirations of the Blue and White will fall onthe shoulders of four returning starters and 13 newfaces. Getting accustomed to each other is thebiggest obstacle LU faces as the talent level of theincoming freshmen is undeniable.

“We have a fast and athletic team,” said second-year head coach Dutchik. “Will there be an ad-justment period? Probably. But these girls arefearless and hard workers. Plus, they get to learnand train with a fantastic foundation.”

The Knights will be counting on their returnersmore than ever but all four players have more thanproven they can hold their own in the collegegame. Junior Melissa Ortiz is the elder statesmanon the team as the lone upperclassman but don’tbe fooled by sophomores Kelsey Butler, Rio Han-lan and Alison Ramsey, all of whom started at least16 games last year.

ForwardsMelissa Ortiz became the first player to garner FirstTeam All-SSC recognition in consecutive yearssince Janine Nicolaisen in 1999-00

Ortiz has led the SSC in points in back-to-backyears

Ortiz is the lone returning forward on the squadbut the Knights will have seven players who haveexperience playing up top

Ortiz is fresh off a U20 Women’s World Cup ap-pearance where she scored a goal in her first careercap

Dutchik’s View…“I really like the depth that we have at forward. Allof the players are fast but they bring different di-mensions to the position. I think, because of thatversatility, we will play with more players up top.Obviously Melissa has shown she is one of the topplayers in the SSC [scoring 31 goals in two seasons]but I don’t think we will have to rely on her all thetime now because we have a lot of kids who canscore goals.

“Lauren Vernon is like a sniper out there, ex-tremely dangerous from 15-20 yards out. She hasa quick burst and is great at getting behind defend-ers. Those two, paired with Jamie Lockie could bedangerous. Jamie always puts herself in a positionto score and has that scorer’s mentality to put theball into the back of the net.

“Stevie Jones has the strength to muscle her wayaround the box and Kacie Huber could be thefastest player on our team allowing us to stretch thefield. Added to the mix should be Rachel Lallas, who is stealthy and technical.”

MidfieldThis is an area with the least amount of experienceas the Knights will look to replace all four startersfrom last year’s team

Lynn’s midfield last season contributed nine goalsand 18 assists

Dutchik’s View…“Although we don’t return anyone to this positionand will rely on all freshmen, I think this is an areathat could potentially have the most talent in time. These girls are extremely athletic and have atremendous work ethic which they will need so thatthey can learn from each other.

“Reanne Thomas is a great attacking player whowill set the tempo for us. Kayley Clay is going tobe a player who sets things up for us. She has greatvision on the field and can distribute the ball any-where. Our final two midfielders are real grinders.Megan Rodwell and Gabriela Durante will be play-ers who win balls in the air and make those hardtackles.

“This area is going to need the most developmentout of all our positions but once they learn thespeed of play, they are going to be fun to watch.”

DefenseLynn has the most experience in the back as theyreturn a pair of starters in Rio Hanlan and AlisonRamsey

Ramsey was the leading scorer among defenders, tallying two goals and one assist after returning fromACL surgery

The Knights defense posted seven shutouts, themost since the 200 season

Dutchik’s View…“I’m excited to see how our defense shakes out thisseason because of the personnel that is back there.Yes we have two returning players but we also havetwo freshmen who have little experience playingdefense. Our opponents may view that as a weak-ness but I think our athleticism will overcome someof our deficiencies early as they all learn to play to-gether.

“Rio is going to be counted on heavily to be the or-ganizer. She had a great teacher last year in [two-time All-SSC selection] Mindy DeCara and madegreat strides in the spring. Alison knows the systemwe have in place and has grown more and morecomfortable with her role as a vocal leader. Shemay not be the fastest player but she has a great feel

for the game and knows how to play the position.

“The newcomers will be tested early but I have nodoubt they are up for the challenge. Paige Meggi-son is as fearless as they come but she’ll need tolearn to be patient in her defensive challenges.Scout Stowe could be the best overall athlete onthe team and should be an enforcer in our box, butshe needs to get a little more consistent in the air.Gabriella Wuyke is another athlete with the speedto keep up with the faster outside midfielders in theconference. All three are going to see significanttime on the pitch.”

GoalkeepersKelsey Butler posted six shutouts in her first seasonas starter for the Fighting Knights, the most sincethe 2000 season

Butler ranked in the top-half of the SSC in shutouts(4th) and saves (T-4th)

Butler’s 66 saves last year tied her for the fifth mostin program history

Dutchik’s View…“Kelsey Butler looked good all spring and haslooked even better this preseason. She put in a lotof work over the summer and has done a great jobof addressing her weaknesses. She’s a year olderand wiser and should have a good season for us. Ithink Kelsey’s shot stopping has improved, espe-cially on lofted shots, while she has become domi-nant on getting in front of crosses.”

ScheduleLynn has four preseason nationally-ranked oppo-nents on its schedule: West Florida (2nd), Rollins(13th), Armstrong Atlantic State (19th), FloridaTech (21st)

Of the four ranked schools, two (Rollins andFlorida Tech) hail from the Sunshine State Con-ference

The Knights face off against two new opponents intheir opening weekend (AASU and Georgia Col-lege & State)

Dutchik’s View…“We are playing some pretty dominant teams rightoff the bat. I want to show our team where we needto be and where we are going. The goal of this pro-gram is to always make the national tournamentand to get there you need to play some tough op-ponents.

“I think the quality of our non-conference oppo-nents is going to help us in the SSC. Our confer-ence is always tough but we are fortunate this yearthat we have some of our key games such asRollins, Saint Leo, Florida Southern and Tampa,at home. But there is a stretch of six games on theroad that will test us.”
