It is with pride and excitement to share the past years’ results of the Nationally Accredited St. Stephen’s Community House!! We are certainly proud to announce the earning of this tremendous achievement and what it means to communicate our level of integrity as an organization, the trust of those we serve and the confidence of those who invest in our work; our results speak to our ability to provide high quality and proven services.

The results you will learn about in this report are just the beginning of the changes we want to see for the individuals and families we serve. The change we want to see and the change we want to be part of making happen, the change of brightening lives for years to come.

We, the Best and Brightest staff and the dynamic Board of Trustees begin brightening lives, as early as 6 weeks of life in the womb, supporting expecting families to ensure every life has a great beginning and healthy start of life. We continue the work of brightening lives by igniting of spirit and urge of learning, which happens in our childcare center and we build on this excitement through our afterschool and summer programs. The field trips, building of Skimmers, tutoring and Art in our House will lead and can begin a life of love and enjoyment of learning. The love of learning will improve graduation results and lead to greater academic and career achievement. Although our youth programs are critical we are committed to building families, we subscribe to the Annie E. Casey mantra of family strengthening- Children do well, when families do well and families do well when they live in supportive environments.

In partnership with you as a stakeholder in our work, we will build leaders for tomorrow, strengthen families and communities, and take our place when invited to brighten lives throughout Franklin County, brightening lives one family at a time! Please join us as our new season is underway-“A hub of self-sufficiency.”

A Message from the Board Chair

Since 1919 St Stephen’s Community House has been brightening lives, please join me in our celebration of 91 years of service to the Greater Linden community. This year, I have been blessed with the privilege to serve as Board Chair, joining a team of leaders who are not shrinking in the face of a tough economy but daily rising up and strengthening families. I am proud to walk alongside a team of determined board members, inspired staff, committed donors, and diehard volunteers who are advancing self-sufficiency in the Linden community.

Please read our compelling stories, picture yourselves in the lives of those mentioned, and consider pledging time, talent or treasure to support our legacy for another year. On behalf of the Board of Trustees and our dedicated staff, thank-you for supporting St. Stephen’s and its important work.

Brooke BillmaierBoard Chair

Celebrating 92 Years of Community Service

“Family Success” was referred to the Family to Family Program in the fall of 2010. This family unit consists of a mom, age 68 and her son, age 12 whom she adopted 6 years ago after fostering him for over 4 years. Also in the household is her twin sister, age 68, with dementia. The reason the family was referred was because of behavioral issues the 12 year old was displaying both at home and at school. This family did not lack any love. This mom needed some 2010 problem solving skills and the 12 yr. old needed someone to hear his frustrations without being grounded for it. Family to Family intervention specialists intervened with home based services on effective parenting skills, alternative disciplinary actions, positive communication skills, developmental youth services, mentoring, tutoring, and a true sense of support. The 12 year old continued to share his frustrations and continued to have difficulties with the intense bullying at school. The 12 yr, old began cutting himself and threatening to run away. Once the case worker observed the school situation several times, the case worker and tutor realized trying to teach and convince a 12 yr. old to practice non-violent behavior in the classroom in a school where you needed fighting methods to survive was non-productive. So after the second incident of the 12 yr. old cutting himself and screaming that’s he’s not going back to THAT school, we all heard him! Working together with Ohio State Children’s Psychiatric Hospital and the caseworker, we found a private school that would take him. Once the school’s community realized mom’s age and now her onset of gout that was physically deterring her to support her son like she always has, the community stepped up and granted him free tuition, paid uniforms, and transportation! The 12 yr. old has volunteered for several family functions here at SSCH and seems to gleam when he walks through the doors ---- as we do gleam back!

I would like to THANK YOU for the guidance your program at St Stephen’s has provided my child. Neil has been taking the COTA bus from Fort Hayes H.S. to the St. Stephen’s program two or three times a week. Mr. Ferguson and the OSU student volunteer have been working with Neil on his OGT preparation for the 2011 OGT Testing. Mr. Ferguson would have Neil practice Math, Reading, Writing while at St. Stephen’s. I am happy to report that Neil PASSED ALL OGT Sections! Reading – 439, Math – 429, Writing – 433, Science – 453 and Social Studies- 462.

I would like to THANK YOU AGAIN for the confidence, support, and fellowship, Neil has received from Mr. Ferguson and the St Stephen’s Team.

For over 7 years, St. Stephen’s has helped with transportation. I am a widow on a fixed income, a two-year breast cancer survivor and am not able to drive. To me this [transportation service] has been a Godsend and has really helped me. I don’t have a need to worry about how I am going to get to the Doctor’s appointments and back home again.”

St. Stephen’s Christ Child Childcare Center has been one of my true blessings. Since being at the center, my daughter has developed social skills that are challenged daily. My daughter [has learned] practical and spiritual skills and performs what is being taught to her on a regular basis. I love the evening time when my daughter wants to engage in stories or songs she has learned from her day at the childcare center and is now the leader of prayer before every meal. From the positive environment and encouraging staff, I am vey thankful to have my daughter in the center. Thank you so much St. Stephen’s for all the opportunities and encouragement you have given to my family!

How We Spend Our MoneySt. Stephen’s Community House expects all employees to make sound purchasing decisions that ensure the continued efficient operation of the agency. To help get the most from every procurement dollar we have established vendor partnerships. These partnerships are negotiated using the full benefit of the agency’s buying power and include an analysis of the vendor’s corporate sponsorship of community activities.

Discussions on corporate sponsorship usually go one of two ways. Either the vendor is pleasantly surprised at how their corporate involvement in the community is honored by the agency and how their corporate mission is compatible with the mission of St. Stephen’s, or they see the importance of this aspect of contracting with us and catch the spirit of community involvement through corporate sponsorship.

We recognize the value of corporate sponsorship in the community regardless of the beneficiary, and frequently the benefit accrues to us. Vendors often donate gifts for our fundraisers, provide services at little or no cost, or share costs with us. Strong relationships with our vendors are developed through this process.

The Columbus Business First Annual Corporate Care awards recognize outstanding corporate contributions to our community, and many of the recent recipients have a strong relationship with us. Examples include Huntington National Bank, Grange Insurance and Cardinal Health to name just a few.

In 2010 more than 1000 volunteers assisted St. Stephen’s in our mission to assist Linden area residents in developing self-sufficiency and maximizing their potential. Families benefitted from the volunteers who assisted with our major fundraising activities: BRAVO for the Children and Gingerbread. During September, 41 volunteers joined us for Community Care Day and in December, more than 700 volunteers assisted area residents during the Christmas Care On New Toy program helping us serve, along with the AFL-CIO, more than 2900 families

Other volunteers assisted our departmental staff at St. Stephen’s. Students from the Catholic Diocese, OSU, Otterbein, Cardinal Health, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Girl Scout Troop 374, Key Bank, AABE, Hillel Academy, Salem Baptist Church, and Christ Child Society volunteered and impacted the lives of Linden area residents by sharing their talents with our seniors, our children in the day care center, our youth in the after school program, and our clients who use the food pantry. Other volunteers served in other areas at St. Stephen’s: administration, development, maintenance and grounds and the community garden.

Our volunteers impact SSCH in so many ways. They provide assistance to our staff, companionship for our seniors, mentorship for our youth, and maintenance for our physical plant. During 2010, our volunteers served 2,260 hours for a savings of $51,635.00.

Together, with our partners, we develop socially through…..

hLiving Well In Linden Initiative focuses on providing health and wellness services to the Linden community.

hBike Loan Program aids to increase physical fitness by loaning bicycles to individuals/families. In 2010, 40 participants were loaned bicycles; riding an estimated 720 miles.

hCommunity Garden is a fruit/vegetable garden on-site at the agency for community residents and program participants to volunteer and in-turn receive the harvest. In 2010, over 70 volunteers and residents worked hands-on in the garden.

hChoice Food Pantry allows individuals/ families to “choose” food for their family. In 2010, we converted our food pantry into a “choice” pantry with shelving, freezers & refrigerators, similar to a grocery store.

In 2010, a total of 211 youth were served of these, 97% passed to the next grade level, 97% demonstrated (Columbus or Ohio)district standard of 94% school attendance, 82% demonstrated reading levels at or above grade levels and 75% demonstrated math levels at or above grade level.

In 2010, 38 students received services; 74% demonstrated a positive gain in reading accuracy and 78% showed overall improvement in math skills.

In 2010, 300 youth were served and placed into 80 various worksites; 20 hours per week for six weeks.

In 2010 (July-December), 380 families received services in the countywide Initiative.

In 2010, 404 seniors received services and of those seniors receiving services, 97% seniors reported maintaining independent living status.

St. Stephen’s Community has national accreditation for childcare and program services.

St. Stephen’s Community STEM Summer Program is one of two programs in the United States. Washington DC is the other.
