Bill Keopple enters his second season as head footballcoach at Southern Arkansas, hired in December 2008 as the19th coach to lead the Muleriders.
Keopple has accumulated 26 years of coaching experi-ence, including his first stint as a head coach on the colle-giate level at SAU. He served 18 years as an assistant in thecollege ranks with stops at Tulsa, Arkansas, Boise State andCentral Arkansas.
Prior to coming to Southern Arkansas, Keopple servedsix years (2003-2008) as head coach at Arkansas High Schoolin Texarkana. His teams were 44-26-1 during his six seasons,advancing to the state playoffs the last five and winningconsecutive state championships in 2006 and 2007. Keopple’s2005 and 2006 Razorback teams were 6A South Conferencechampions. He was honored in 2006 as the 6A State FarmCoach of the Year, as well as 6A Outstanding Coach by theNational Football Foundation in both 2006 and 2007, and wasselected to serve on the Arkansas high school football All-Star coaching staffs in 2004 and 2007.
Before taking over the reins at Texarkana, Keopple wasat the University of Tulsa in 2002 on former Arkansas defen-sive coordinator Keith Burns’ staff. He spent that seasoncoaching the defensive line and serving as recruiting coordi-nator for the Golden Hurricane.
Keopple served as an assistant under Houston Nutt atArkansas in 1998 and 1999, and was with Nutt at Boise Statein 1997, coaching the defensive line at both schools. TheRazorbacks were 1998 SEC Western Division champions, fin-ishing 9-3 and playing Michigan in the Citrus Bowl. Arkan-sas had the fifth-ranked rushing defense in the nation thatseason and was ranked seventh in total defense. The 1999Razorbacks went 8-4 and defeated Texas in the Cotton Bowl,finishing the season 12th in rushing defense and 17th in totaldefense.
Keopple went to Boise State from Newport High Schoolwhere he was head coach and athletic director in 1996. Heguided the Greyhounds to the state playoffs in an 8-3 sea-son, giving him an overall mark of 52-29-1 in his seven yearsas a head coach on the high school level.
Graduating with a B.S.E. in 1982 and an M.S.E. in 1986from Central Arkansas, Keopple began his coaching careerthere in 1982 as a graduate assistant working with the offen-sive line. He spent 14 years with the Bears, tutoring theoffensive line the entire time and serving as offensive coordi-nator and recruiting coordinator from 1990-95. During histenure at UCA, the Bears won three NAIA national champi-onships and 10 consecutive conference championships from1983-92 in the former Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference(AIC).
A native of Little Rock, Keopple is the son of Hall ofFame high school coach C.W. Keopple. A 1976 graduate ofParkview High School, he played on the 1974 and 1976 statechampionship teams and was an all-state and super teamselection his senior season.
During his playing days at Central Arkansas, Keopplewas a member of two conference championship teams andwas an honorable mention selection on both the All-NAIADistrict 17 and All-AIC teams. He served as a team captainhis senior season in which the Bears were ranked first in thenation with an undefeated record and advanced to the na-tional playoffs.
Keopple has been associated with 18 championshipteams as a player and coach, and has recruited extensivelyon the collegiate level in 13 states, including Alabama, Ar-kansas, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Kansas, Louisiana, Missis-sippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas and Washing-ton.
Keopple, 51, has been married 28 years to the formerMarsha Lee Belew of Beebe, and they have a son, Landon,27, and a daughter, Brittany, 25. Landon currently serves asthe quarterback and wide receiver coach for the Muleridersand is SAU’s strength and conditioning coordinator, whileBrittany is a sales rep for R.J. Reynolds in Texarkana.

Head Coach Insights on the offense: Offensively we had a long way to go from last year being one of the worst in the league productively. We’ve had to address every position. In the line of scrimmage we were not physical enough and that was the first area we had to address. We definitely feel like we’ve fill the gap up front with the additions of Gary McClellan (6’5 360), Allen Hale (6’5 320) and Jeff Bordelon (6’3 293). Austin Civita established himself as the starter at QB mid way through last year and is a solid performer along with Tyler Sykora who is a red shirt freshman that has show a lot of talent at 6’6 225 with a big arm. We must be able to establish a running game and with the improvement up front along with the additions of LaDarien Brown (RSFr), Teddy Burns (FR) and getting the 2008 Newcomer of the Year back Mark Johnson; things are looking up. Our receiving group should be much improved from the inexperienced group of a year ago. The most experienced receiver we put on the field last year was a sophomore. That group is back along with the addition of Damion Atkins (6’4 230 / JC Transfer) and Jarriel Norman (ASU transfer). Spring practice was like night and day from an offensive stand point form a year ago. Our player’s knowledge of what we’re doing is so much further along and our talent level has increased drastically. We’re two deep in the offensive line with guys that we can win with and our depth at receiver is much better. We’re solid at QB with some really good young talent. At Running back last year we played with a bunch of rookies that should be much better physically. Head Coach insight on the defense: What we did defensively last year was remarkable considering how bad we were offensively. We return our entire secondary and have a group of young linebackers that are much more talented. We lost two solid performers in the line (Terry & Alexander) but expect that group to still be formidable with Cedric Thornton (6’4 295) back from an All American year. Jeremy Wiseman (6’3 275), Chester Owens (6’3 295), Aston Pennywell (5’11 277) and Greg Nelson (6’0 237) all bring game experience back to provide a solid group with the addition of Rodney Evans (6’0 260 / Kilgore JC) and Brandon Rashad (6’5 250 / Trinity Valley JC). This spring we were three deep at our linebacker positions with solid young talent; Grantel Kennedy (6’0 221), Greg Carter (6’0 217), Cameron Maser (6’3 201), AJ Steele (6’1 237), Cameron Davis (5’9 227), Sam Cowling (6’0 232) and will be lead by our only senior Simeon Oston (5’11 260). Our secondary will be much more physical and knowledgeable with Don Unamba (6’1 192), Jon Writt (6’0 206), Jacolby Stewart (6’0 203), LaMarcus Howard (5’11 195), Jamal Broussard (5’11 200), Anthony Johnson (6’1 201) all back from last year. Daren Lewis (6’4 210) and Trent Stevenson (5’7 167) will be the only seniors in the back end and have provided quality leadership. We expect big things from this unit this year. Head Coach goals for the upcoming season: Our goals for the upcoming season are to improve in every aspect as a program and team. Our goals will be lofty even though people in our league won’t expect much from us. With only three wins last year expectations are high here at Southern Arkansas. I’ve been involved with eleven conference championship teams in my nineteen years of college coaching and I don’t expect to be satisfied with just being an improved team. Our league is so balanced and with a break here or there wins will come our way. Our only two conference wins were against quality opponents (OBU & West Alabama) last year. We were able to beat a playoff team (West Al) in a great 5 overtime game. That win showed a lot of character by our team which we took as a positive sign for the future of our program. As our overall talent improves so will our ability to win games. We know we have a tall task ahead of us but our team is working hard to be the best we can be. Our schedule is one of the tougher ones in the country by opening against Harding on the road and then going to Texas State and North Alabama. Week 4 we finally get to play at home and Valdosta is our opponent; no one in the country would want our schedule. Regardless of our schedule and our previous record here at Southern Arkansas we expect greatness out of our players and they know it.

DEFENDING GSC FOOTBALL CHAMPION UNA PICKED TO REPEATBirmingham, AL—The 2010 Gulf South Conference Football campaign has a hard act to follow after last year’s thrilling, roller-coaster season. Defending Conference Champion North Alabama was selected by the league’s coaches to remain the kings of the GSC football jungle. West Alabama is expected to continue to ride its 2009 momentum into 2010, while usual suspects Valdosta State, Delta State and Arkansas Tech are also top contenders. The GSC-TV Live Game of the Week package is back for the sixth consecutive season, featuring a nine-game schedule led eight Thursday night battles. Highlighting this year’s regional television package includes the “Boomtown Classic,” which pits Southern Arkansas versus Arkansas-Monticello at Memorial Stadium in El Dorado, Arkansas on Saturday, November 6th. The GSC remained a part of the NCAA Production telecast schedule on CBS College Sports Network when Delta State hosts Arkansas Tech on Thursday, September 9th.
Defending GSC Champion North Alabama was selected to repeat, after inishing irst in the Coaches’ Poll for the irst time since 2006. UNA garnered 97 total points behind eight irst-place votes, one second-place nod and one for third-place. In-state rival West Alabama is the Lions’ top challenger after the Tigers recorded their highest Pre-Season ranking since 1976. UWA earned 84 total points led by two irst-place votes and four second-place nods. West Alabama previously entered as the top ranked team in 1976 and 1972. Third-place Valdosta State inished three votes shy of UWA, notching the inal irst-place nod en route to 81 points. Delta State is ranked fourth (72 points), followed by Arkansas Tech (62) and Ouachita Baptist (51). OBU tied its previous best ranking after also claiming the sixth spot in 2003. Just one point separates seventh and eighth place with Henderson State inching out in-state rival Arkansas-Monticello, 47 to 46. Completing the poll was Southern Arkansas (26), Harding (24) and West Georgia (19).

The Muleriders proved the prognosticators wrong, winning a share of the GSC Crown after inishing seventh in the Pre-Season voting. SAU is the lowest Pre-Season ranked team to ever win the league title.
Kings of the Pre-Season Jungle...North Alabama holds the dubious honor of leading all former and current league teams in irst-place Pre-Season honors with 10. Former GSC power Troy State is next with eight, while Valdosta State has been tabbed No. 1 six times.
Fulilling the Prophecy...Out of the past 35 Pre-Season Coaches polls on record, 12 irst-place teams have gone on to hoist the GSC trophy. The most recent Pre-Season favorite to win the Title is North Alabama in 2006.

2010 PRE-SEASON ALL-GSC TEAM The 2010 Pre-Season All-GSC Football Team includes ive returning Pre-Season stars, six players from previous All-Confer-ence First Teams and 11 2009 Second Team All-GSC standouts. Arkansas-Monticello and Ouachita Baptist led all schools with ive honorees, followed by four from Valdosta State. North Alabama, Southern Arkansas and West Alabama each placed three, while Arkansas Tech and Delta State added two apiece. Henderson State and West Georgia completed the contingent by placing one player. Returning from last year’s Pre-Season Team is UAM quarterback Scott Buisson, DSU running back Trevar Deed, VSU defensive lineman Demario Jones and linebacker Larry Dean, and UNA defensive back Charles McClain. Deed earned his second unanimous selection, while OBU defensive lineman Bryan Church, SAU defensive lineman Cedric Thornton were also consensus picks. Just six underclassmen made the squad, including VSU wide out Gerald Ford who was the second consecutive sopho-more to garner accolades.

WELCOME TO THE GSC There will not be any new head coaches in the Gulf South Conference this season, but the league did welcome a new staff member this past January. For the irst time since 1995, the GSC Football Oficials Association has a new leader after Jeff Roberson oficially took over for the retiring Bill Johnson. The Texarkana, TX resident brings 30 years of oficiating experience after entering the profession at the age of 18 in 1975. Roberson has since built an impressive resume, including employment by the Gulf South Conference, Southeastern Conference and Sun Belt Conference. He is no stranger to the GSC after oficiating in the league from 1995-2000. Roberson’s most recent experience came in the SEC when he worked as a referee from 2002-07 and an umpire from 2008-09.
GSC NON-CONFERENCE BATTLES Eight GSC schools will face fellow Conference foes in four non-conference contests this season. Two of the non-league games will be televised beginning with Game One of the GSC-TV LIVE Game of the Week West Alabama and host Arkansas-Monticello on Thursday, September 2nd. A national television audience will be on hand to watch Delta State host Arkansas Tech on Thursday, September 9th as the NCAA Productions crew broadcasts the game on CBS College Sports. Sandwiched between the televised battles are a pair of clashes on Saturday, September 4th: Southern Arkansas at Harding and Henderson State at North Alabama.

Special Teams Starters Returning/Lost: 0/0Arkansas-Monticello hopes that a large senior corps can lead the Boll Weevils to new heights in 2010. UAM returns 15 starters from a year ago, led by senior standouts at key positions. Scott Buisson is behind center for the fourth straight year, seeking to repeat his 2008 effort which led to GSC Player of the Year honors. The two-time Pre-Season All-GSC star was eficient a year ago, ranking fourth in the league in total offense (276.1) and passing (235.8) and 10th in rush-ing (40.3). Running back Johnny Polite led the team in rushing in 2009 with 543 yards on 149 carries, while Pre-Season All-GSC Jywin Ceasar is one of the top returning wide outs in the GSC after rank-ing fourth in yards (88.5) and sixth in catches (6.1). Tripp Boatner anchors the offensive line after compiling 22 starts at tackle the past two seasons. The defense is spearheaded by First Team All-GSC linebacker Carlton Johnson, free safety Augustus Ashley and de-fensive end Vincent Jackson. Johnson placed sixth in the Confer-ence in tackles with 81 stops in 10 games, while posting 2.5 sacks.
Special Teams Starters Returning/Lost: 0/4What a difference a year makes. Last season was one for Arkan-sas Tech’s record books. The Wonder Boys advance to the Second Round of the NCAA Playoffs and also provide a Harlon Hill Trophy Fi-nalist. Gone from 2009 are 18 starters, but Head Coach Steve Mul-lins will not let that lower his expectations for a successful season. The defense features six senior returnees led by Pre-Season All-GSC defensive back Tario Dansby and linebacker Brandon Wright. Linebacker Danny Martin is a three-year starter, while defensive back RonDerrick Jackson is the top returning tackler (73 total). The offense must replace its top two receivers and All-American signal caller Nick Graziano. The top mission entering spring practice was to solidify the quarterback spot with senior Robert Sagerian and redshirt freshman Rico Keller leading the charge. Senior running back Cody Burns is back after running for 479 yards in 2009, while Derrick Smith is an All-GSC Second Team offensive lineman. New-comers will also be featured on Special teams.
Special Teams Starters Returning/Lost: 3/0Delta State has plenty of motivation when it takes the ield this season, seeking to rebound from its lowest win-loss total since 2002 (5-5). The Statesmen return 16 starters, led by eight on the de-fensive side of the ball. Linebackers Hollan Fiu (40) and Robert Hogan (33) are the top returning tacklers, while Pre-Season All-GSC cornerback Dominique Davenport patrols the backield for the third straight year. While the top priority on offense is to break in a new quarterback, DSU does have one of the top backs in the nation in Trevar Deed. Deed is a two-time Pre-Season All-GSC and First Team All-GSC standout who was tops in the league in scoring (9.0) and was second in rushing (93.1) and all purpose yards (194.7). Anchoring the offensive line are returning tackles Phillip Yandall and Kendall Hunter. The Statesmen will team a trio of returning wideouts led by Xavier Rambo, with three Division I-FBS transfers. Micah Davis is the top quarterback entering the fall. Davis is a redshirt senior transfer who passed for 175 yards and three touchdowns in the Green & White spring game.
Special Teams Starters Returning/Lost: 2/0Sixteen returning starters fuel high hopes for Harding University this season. The offense leads the way, featuring nine starters from 2009, four of which are offensive lineman. Caleb Simmons and James Kee started all 11 games a year ago, but Kee’s availability is in question after he suffered a knee injury in spring practice. Quar-terback Josh Powell returns after passing for 1,735 yards and 10 TDs. Powell will be pushed by sophomore Chaz Rodgers. Junior Jeremy Holt rolled up 345 yards on 66 carries, while 2009 Pre-Sea-son All-GSC wide out Kurt Adams returns after suffering a season-ending injury in the irst game of the season. Three of the seven returning defensive players are lineman. Marcus Jones racked up 54 tackles, Andrew Jackson had 6.0 tackles for loss and Josh Aldridge added 6.5 tackles for loss. Defensive back Steve Hudson is the team’s leading returning tackler (67 total). Starting wide out Terrence Davis adds to the secondary depth chart after moving over during the spring. Micah Canterbury returns to handle the placekicking and punting duties (37.0 yards per punt; 9-16 FGs).
Special Teams Starters Returning/Lost: 2/1Familiar faces will take the ield for Henderson State in 2010. Nine defensive starters and eight more on offense give HSU a solid nucleus heading into the campaign. Five offensive lineman are back from 2009, keyed by seniors Kevin Rodriguez, Mike Tuimavave and David Rebata. Quarterback Nick Hardesty passed for 1,247 yards and 11 TDs and ran for 462 yards and three scores. Wide receiver Chris Evering was 10th in the GSC receiving (60.8 ypg) and added seven TDs on 33 receptions. Defenders Steve Butrick and Michah McDonald impressed Head Coach Scott Maxield during the spring. Butrick tallied 44 total stops a year ago at linebacker, while McDonald added 31 solos and three interceptions. Linebacker Taylor Stone will play a big role for the Reddies after recording 38 tackles, while Mike Wrightman totaled 53 tackles. Defensive back Kenny Evans is a three-year letterwinner who returns after sitting out a year due to injury. Not be forgotten is Pre-Season All-GSC defensive lineman Pat Gladney.
Special Teams Starters Returning/Lost: 1/2Despite returning just six starters from 2009, North Alabama was selected to repeat as GSC Champions. A trio of offensive lineman return in Jamie Dixon, Will Furlong and Kyle Futch. Lee Chapple is the favorite to start at quarterback after transferring from Divi-sion I-FCS Georgia Southern. Running back Marcus Sims was a First Team All-American in 2009, running for 325 yards and 11 TDs. Charles McClain (306 yards) and Jusmon Rivers (336 yards) lead the wide receiver stable. Pre-Season All-GSC defensive back Chad Daniel heads the defense after collecting 37 total stops a year ago. Joining Daniel in the secondary are Division I-FBS transfers Bryan Thomas (Florida) and Deandre Morgan (N.C. State). Linebacker Albert Russell played in all 13 games in 2009, posting 10 tackles for loss along with 37 tackles. Larry Wilson also played in 13 contests racking up 32 total stops. Pre-Season All-GSC defensive end Court-ney Harris collected 3.5 sacks along with 5.5 tackles for loss and 37 total tackles.

Special Teams Starters Returning/Lost: 4/2Ouachita Baptist started 2009 with four straight wins including back-to-back victories over Top 25 foes before settling for a 6-4 record. OBU seeks to improve on that streak this year, ielding 21 returning starters. Quarterback Eli Cranor is back at quarterback after rank-ing seventh in the GSC in passing (194.1) and total offense (221.0). Protecting Cranor are Pre-Season All-GSC guard Kyle Smith, tackle Corey Godbolt and tight end Phillip Supernaw. Supernaw also added four TD catches on 13 catches. Jaime Harris amassed 436 yards receiving and three TDs a year ago. Pre-Season All-GSC defensive tackle Bryan Church and linebacker Clayton Goree spearhead the 10 returning defense starters. Church ranked fourth in the GSC in tackles for loss (15), while Goree added 54 total tackles. Linebacker Tyler George was tops in the GSC in fumbles recovered (4) and he added 57 tackles and four TFL. Free safety Denszell Brown racked up 67 total stops.
Special Teams Starters Returning/Lost: 5/4Head Coach Bill Koepple will continue to put his stamp on the Southern Arkansas program after taking over the reins a year ago. Quarterback Austin Civita started ive games in 2009, totaling 1,441 yards and eight TDs in eight appearances. He showed his potential versus Arkansas Tech, passing for 419 yards on 36 completions. Travarus Brown (38 catches; 317 yard) and Raphyael Tyson (28 catches; 488 yards) inished irst and second on the team in receiving. Pre-Season All-American defensive end Cedric Thornton head-lines the six returning starters on defense. Thornton was tops in the GSC in tackles for loss (23.0) and sacks (tied, 8.5), while adding 80 overall stops. Defensive back Don Unamba was second in passes defended (1.04 pg), while Daren Lewis ranked seventh (0.90). Free safety Jon Writt started in nine of 10 games, posting 62 tackles and two interceptions. Special teams are in the capable hands of Pre-Season All-GSC punter Zach Massingill and placekicker Noé Cuevas.
Special Teams Starters Returning/Lost: 3/0Valdosta State has chip on its shoulder in 2010 after failing to advance to the NCAA Playoffs for the irst time in three years. The Blazers will be strong upfront thanks to four returning starters on the offensive line: tackles Jesus Torres and Britt Wilson, guards Jamarian Brown and Kyle Fox (Pre-Season All-GSC). Pre-Season All-GSC wide receiver Gerald Ford made an impact as a fresh-man with 41 catches for 526 yards en route to All-GSC Second Team laurels. Senior Russ Calloway enters as the top quarterback after an impressive spring game effort. Ronnye Nelson leads the rushing attack. Spearheading the defense are two-time Pre-Season All-GSC stars, defensive tackle Demario Jones and linebacker Larry Dean. Dean had 80 tackles, 7.5 for loss, while Jones seeks to rebound from an injury shortened 2009 where he played just three contests. VSU hopes that junior college transfers Jeff Jones and Harrison Drieling can ill the void in the secondary where free safety Matt Pierce is the only returning starter. Punter Jack Fulford earned Second Team All-GSC honors in 2009.
Special Teams Starters Returning/Lost: 2/2West Alabama seeks to continue to ride the momentum of a 2009 campaign which included its irst NCAA appearance since 1975. Quarterback Deon Williams leads the way after inishing ifth in the GSC in total offense (263.9) and sixth in passing (233.7). Williams is also the Tigers’ top returning rusher (359 yards). His top targets are Gerald Worsham (650 yards) and Eric McDonald (516 yards). The offensive line features Pre-Season All-GSC honorees, tackle Jared Porter and center Justin Moore. Sophomore Shontral Ford is one of the GSC’s top returning defensive backs after ranking third in in-terceptions (ive). Pre-Season All-GSC defensive lineman Bernard Sykes wrapped up 34 total tackles. Linebacker Deon Lacey placed fourth on the squad in tackles (67) and was tied for third in solo stops (48). Junior Brock Sharp will continue to handle punting and place-kicker duties. He booted 60 punts for 2,300 yards (30.8 avg) and also connected on 8-of-14 ield goals.
Special Teams Starters Returning/Lost: 4/0Head Coach Darryl Dickey continues his rebuilding project in his third year at West Georgia. UWG returns nine offensive starters from 2009, led by Pre-Season All-GSC running back Yusuf Holloway who ranked third in the GSC in rushing (70.0 ypg). Holloway is also the top returning receiver (251), so the Wolves need more production from its wide outs. Senior signal-callers Sean Gray and Brandon Behenna are back after splitting time a year ago, but both will be pushed by junior transfer Joe Weatherford. The entire offensive front returns, including center Ukandu Emeonye who suffered a broken leg during the 2009 pre-season. The defense brings back nine starters, highlighted by end Jeremy Cook who led the squad in tackles (64) and linebacker Travis Payton who inished second (49). The defense will also receive a boost with the return of tackle Juan Pickett who is back after an injury plagued 2009.
