This could be the season in which Stony Brook emerges as one of the na-tion’s best men’s lacrosse teams. “From the minute we stepped on the field after the America East championship game last season, our focus has been on re-turning to that game in 2010,” coach Rick Sowell said. “I could not be hap-pier with the way we have gone about our business preparing for the season. It was clear from day one the team was motivated to improve. The combina-tion of talent, confidence, experience and motivation is dangerous, and we have all of it.” On offense the Seawolves are es-sentially intact from a year ago. They lose a total of eight goals from 2009, a season in which their attack ranked ninth in the nation in goals per game, ninth in ground balls per game and first in face-off percentage. The starting at-tack and midfield positions all re-turn, giving SBU one of the top re-turning offensive machines in the nation. The one loss among the starters comes on defense, where the Seawolves have a number of capable players ready to step into a starting role. And the start-ing goalkeeper from a year ago is back as well. Stony Brook finished the 2009 season ranked in the top 20 for the first time in program history and earned a number of top 20 posi-tions in the 2010 preseason polls. The Seawolves tied perennial power UMBC for first place in the final America East standings and battled the Retrievers in the con-

ference championship game, finish-ing 9-6 overall and 4-1 in the league. Stony Brook earned its most victories since 2005, which had been the last time it made the conference final.

AttAck

With the return of 95 percent of its goal-scoring from 2009, a season in which Stony Brook averaged more than 11 goals per game, offense should not pose a problem in 2010. Junior Jordan McBride averaged more than 40 goals during his first two seasons and is poised to challenge SBU’s all-time scoring records. After a 42-goal season, McBride earned honorable mention All-American and first-team All-America East honors for a second straight season. A quick shot with uncanny accuracy, he places well over 70 percent of his shots on goal

and will be the go-to guy again for the Seawolves. Senior Tom Compitello came off a medical redshirt season and had a breakout year for Stony Brook in 2009. Moving to attack, he flourished in his new role, scoring 13 goals and setting up many of McBride’s goals with his team-leading 25 assists. His posses-sion skills behind the net provided a big boost to the SBU offense. Sophomore Kyle Belton quickly turned into another potent stick on of-fense, scoring 18 goals as a freshman and proving to be an accurate shooter. Junior Brett Drost picked up his first career point in 2009 and will be getting more playing time in 2010. Se-nior Tyler Hope brings two years of junior college experience to the team. He totaled 28 goals in two seasons at Suffolk Community College. Freshman

Tim Hawkins, a local product from Rocky Point, will round out what should be a potent position for Stony Brook. “I like what I see with our at-tack; we have a really nice blend of players there,” Sowell said. “Of course, it all starts with Jordan McBride, who will draw a lot of at-tention from our opponents. Tom Compitello has shown that he can make plays, either scoring on his own or setting up other players. He really takes the pressure off our midfielders. Kyle Belton came on strong his first year for us and showed improvement in the fall. Brett Drost also had a strong fall and I expect him to play a role for

us this season.”

Midfield

Much like the attack position, the Stony Brook midfield returns virtually everyone from 2009. The Seawolves lost only two letterwinners at the posi-tion who saw significant playing time, and with three all-conference perform-ers back, the position will be talented

and deep. Junior Kevin Crowley, a two-time first-team all-America East selection, is a do-it-all player for the Seawolves. He is equally adept at scoring and set-ting up goals. Last season he led the team in points, putting in a career-high 28 goals and recording 23 assists to give him a hand in nearly a third of the Seawolves’ goals. He also picked up

a career-best 58 ground balls and fin-ished among the America East leaders in goals, assists and ground balls. Sophomore Robbie Campbell made an immediate impact, finishing third on the team with 21 goals and add-ing 12 assists. Junior Timmy Trenkle emerged as a starter last season and responded with 16 goals. Senior Chris Scott played in ev-ery game for SBU in 2009, scoring a career-high seven goals, including four against Albany in the America East semifinals. Sophomore Graham Ad-ams had a three-goal game against UMBC and should see more playing time in 2010. Sophomore Tyler McCabe is in his first season at Stony Brook after trans-ferring from Quinnipiac. He scored two goals in six games as a freshman. Se-nior Paul Randazzo will battle for play-ing time after getting into three games in his first season with the program in 2009. “This is just like our attack; all of our guys are back,” Sowell said. “With Crowley, Trenkle and Campbell all re-turning, we think that this is a very for-midable group. Crowley is a player that can both score goals and set up his teammates to score. Campbell scored 33 points as a freshman, had a great fall and is in great shape; he can be a very versatile player for us. Timmy has a split-dodge that is as good as any out there, so we expect great things from our first midfield. We also feel that we have good depth with our second mid-field line. Most of them gained valuable game experience last year.”

One of Stony Brook’s few losses comes at short stick defense with the graduation of Taylor Eason ’09 after a solid career. Sophomore Jared Le-Verne was impressive as a freshman playing in every game on his way to America East All-Rookie honors, scor-ing four goals and finishing among the team leaders with 37 ground balls.

Junior Vonzell LeGall also had a solid season, seeing action in every game but one and contributing a goal and an assist. Freshman JJ Laforet adds to the growing contingent of Ca-nadian players at SBU, coming out of Ontario, where he gained plenty of ex-perience playing Junior A lacrosse. Named Stony Brook’s Male Ath-lete of the Year in 2009, senior Steven Waldeck flourished as SBU’s long stick middie in 2009. He was an All-America East selection, and his tenacity on de-fense and on face-offs resulted in career highs in ground balls (96) and caused

Outlookturnovers (21). He ranked seventh in the nation in ground balls per game and among the national long pole leaders with five goals and five assists. After leading the nation by win-ning nearly 64 per-cent of his attempts, junior Adam Rand returns to handle the face-offs for Stony Brook. He won more than 50 percent of his face-offs in every game but two and finished in the top 30 nation-ally in ground balls per game.

defense

Senior Chris Gignilliat, an all-America East pick in 2006, came back last season after missing all of 2008 with an injury, starting every game and providing solid, experienced play. Se-nior Michael Sopko brings 40 games of experience to this defense and was among the team leaders in caused turnovers in 2009. Junior Bryan Reinert and sopho-more Greg Miceli, who saw significant playing time a year ago, will have their roles expanded in 2010. Reinert, who was quite impressive in the fall, played in a career-best 11 games last season. Miceli had a solid season as a fresh-man, picking up 16 ground balls and

causing four turnovers. Sophomores Robert Gibson, Savaughn Greene and Steve Kauf-man and freshman Devin Feeney will provide depth. “We feel that we have enough tal-ent and experience on defense this season to improve upon years past,” Sowell said. “We have three seniors back; Chris Gignilliat for a fifth year, and he is healthy for the first time in his career. Mike Sopko is also back for his senior season and gives us plenty of experience at close defense. And of course we have Steven Waldeck, our team MVP a year ago. Bryan Rein-ert had an impressive fall and we ex-pect him to step in and start along with Gignilliat and Sopko at close defense. Greg Miceli, who also had a great fall, will back up Waldeck at the pole as well

as get time at close defense.”

GoAlkeeper

Goalkeeping is another position for Stony Brook that will be in solid, expe-rienced hands. Senior Char-lie Paar is back after starting the first 12 games of the 2009 season. In his first season with the Sea-wolves, the former junior college All-American won seven of his starts and re-corded 36 ground balls. Injured in the

Hofstra game, he is back to full strength and will be the starter again. Backing him up will be senior Rob Camposa. He stepped in when Paar was hurt and helped lead the Seawolves into the America East final with a pair of wins over Albany, reaching double figures in saves in each of his three starts at the end of the season. “Charlie Paar coming back healthy for us in goal is a plus,” Sowell said. “He is a leader and takes great com-mand over our defense. He really showed what he can do this past fall and I think getting that first year under his belt has helped his confidence and will help our overall team defense.”

A three-time All-America East pick, Steven Waldeck was among the national leaders in ground balls as well as scoring for long stick middies with 10

points.

Rick SowellHead Coach

Fourth SeasonWashington College, 1986

In just three seasons at Stony Brook, head coach Rick Sowell has guided the Seawolves lacrosse program to a position as one of the top teams in the America East Conference as well as a one that is ranked in the top-25 nationally. He arrived at SBU in August of 2006 after three years at St. John’s where he restarted a program that had been idle since 1994. He also had highly suc-cessful coaching stints at Dartmouth College and Georgetown University. Last season Sowell, who will be an assistant coach for Team USA at the 2010 World Championships in England, led Stony Brook to its best record in five years, finishing 9-6 overall and ranked #20 in the USILA Coaches Poll, the first time the Seawolves have been ranked at the end of a season. Stony Brook finished tied for first in the America East Conference with a 4-1 record, another best for the program, and made an appearance in the America East Championship game for the first time since 2005. Over his first two seasons at Stony Brook, Sowell compiled a 15-12 record, including a pair of wins over nationally ranked opponents. In both seasons he guided the Seawolves to a berth in the America East Tournament. During his time at Stony Brook he has seen his team produce a two-time All-American, nine different All-America East players, an America East Rookie of the Year and the individual national champion in face-off percentage. Prior to Stony Brook, Sowell was tapped to head the rebirth and start up of the St. John’s lacrosse program in 2003 after leading two of the top programs in collegiate lacrosse to national acclaim. After a year of building the program back up, Sowell led the Red Storm back onto the field for the first time in 11 years in 2005. From 1999-2003 Sowell was the head coach at Dartmouth where he revived the Big Green program, taking the team from last to first place in the Ivy League during his five years at the helm. During his fifth and final season in 2003 with the Big Green, Sow-ell’s squad posted an 11-3 record, 5-1 in the Ivy League, en route to a conference title and an appearance in the NCAA tournament. During the title run, the Big Green registered a road victory at No. 2 Princeton, its first win at Princeton since 1958. Under Sowell’s leadership the Big Green steadily improved, with four student-athletes earning All-New England honors, two receiving All-Ivy honors and several receiving academic awards. Sowell was also named the NEILA Coach of the Year in 2003. From 1990-1998, he served as an assistant coach at Georgetown University where the Hoyas grew from an also-ran to a national contender in Division I, participating in the 1997 and 1998 NCAA Tournament. In 1998, the Hoyas finished 10-5 overall and advanced to the quarterfinal round before falling to top-seed Loyola, 12-11.

From 1988-1991, Sowell spent three years as the head coach of the boy’s lacrosse team at Mount St. Albans High School in Washington, D.C. While at there he also served as an assistant football coach. Sowell’s coaching career began at Washington College in Chestertown, Md. where he helped guide the Shore-men to the NCAA Division III national title game in 1986 and the semifinal round in 1987. Before dedicating his life to coaching, Sowell played lacrosse at all levels. He began his college career in 1982 at the State University of New York in Cobleskill, transferring to Washington College prior to the 1984 season. As a member of the Shoremen, Sowell was named the 1985 Division III National Midfielder of the Year and was also a two-time All-American. He helped lead Washington College to the Division III national championship game twice. In Sowell’s senior campaign he was team captain and earned the Dr. Charles B. Clark MVP Award. He was also named the Best Athlete by Washington College’s Athletic Council. His 45 goals and 14 assists earned him first team Division III All-America honors and an invitation to participate in the annual North/South All-Star game. In the professional ranks Sowell spent five years with the Baltimore Thunder of the Major Indoor Lacrosse League (MILL). While there he was a first team All-Pro selections three times. Sowell graduated in 1986 with a bachelor’s degree in history. He was inducted into the Washington College Hall of Fame on October 21, 2000. Sowell, and his wife, Catherine, live in Malverne, N.Y., with their daughters, Kennady and Avery.

Ryan WellnerAssistant Coach

Second SeasonMary Washington, 2000

Beginning his second year on the coaching staff at Stony Brook is Ryan Wellner. He brings a wealth of lacrosse ex-perience to the staff and will assist with the defense as well handling responsibility for the operation of the substitution box during games. Wellner comes to Stony Brook after spending a season as the men’s assistant coach and defensive coordinator at Washington & Lee University in Virginia, helping the Gener-als to a 9-6 record. Prior to W&L he served as the defen-sive coordinator for three seasons at the Stevens Institute of Technology in New Jersey where he helped lead the Ducks to a pair of NCAA Tournament berths. Wellner’s defenses produced a pair of All-America defensemen and ranked among the Top 10 in Division III in scoring defense. A 2000 graduate of Mary Washington College with a bachelor of science in business management, Wellner also served as an assistant coach at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy (2004) and Chaminade High School (2003), was the co-founder and director of the New York Lacrosse Acad-emy and served as the Director of Operations for the Na-tional Lacrosse League from 2001-2003. He was a captain and four-year letterwinner for the la-crosse team at Mary Washington, earning the school’s Out-standing Senior Award in 2000.

what’S a Seawolf? In an effort to bring an exciting new identity with its move to the Division I level, then-Stony Brook President Dr. John H. Marburger III and Dr. Richard Laskowski announced in 1994 that beginning in the 1994-1995 academic year, the University and its athletic teams would be referred to by their new nickname, Seawolves. The Seawolves became the fourth nickname in the history of Stony Brook and was chosen by a 32-person committee comprised of students, alumni, faculty and administra-tors. Seawolves was selected from a list of over 200 possible names. A Seawolf is a mythical creature of Tlingit Indian legend that is said to bring good luck to all those who were fortunate enough to see it.

Since its modest beginning as a men’s basketball-only conference in 1979, America East has evolved into one of the most comprehensive NCAA Division I conferences with a commit-ment to broad-based, competitive ath-letics programs, complementing the academic integrity and missions of the member institutions. Each of the nine institutions - Uni-versity at Albany, Binghamton Uni-versity, Boston University, University of Hartford, University of Maine, Uni-versity of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), University of New Hampshire, Stony Brook University, and University of Vermont - offers a unique blend of academic and athletic tradition. America East, which sponsors 21 sports, enters its 21st year of all-sports championship competition on the heels of one of the most successful seasons in history. UMBC overcame a nine-goal defi-cit to upend Albany, 14-13, in the finals of the America East Men’s Lacrosse Championship. The Retrievers, which won a school-record 12 games, were edged by national semifinalist Virginia, 10-9, in the first round of the NCAA Championship. UMBC finished the season ranked No. 6 in the USILA poll. Albany and Stony Brook were also ranked at one point during the season. Five America East standouts were cho-sen All-Americans by the USILA with UMBC’s Terry Kimener receiving sec-ond-team recognition.

2009 Review

Jordan McBride’s 10 goals at Dela-ware broke the Stony Brook school record and was just one shy of the NCAA record. It was the most goals scored in a game by any Division I player in 2008.

Prior to his arrival at Stony Brook, Dr. Stanley held the position of Vice Chancellor for Re-search and Professor in the Department of Molecular Microbiology at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. As Vice Chancellor for Research at Washington University, Dr. Stanley is credited with substantially advancing the research enterprise. In this role, he oversaw a research portfolio of $548 mil-lion, including $391 million in NIH fund-ing. His responsibilities encompassed a broad array of activities associated with the management of these extramural research funds, including, but not lim-ited to, the full range of matters related to undergraduate, graduate, and faculty research, and technology transfer. Jim FioreDirector of Athletics

hofstra, ‘91

On July 23, 2003, President Shirley Strum Kenny introduced Jim Fiore as the ninth Director of Athletics in Stony Brook University history stating “Jim has the energy, drive, enthusiasm and intel-ligence to take this program, in the tradi-tion of Stony Brook, very far, very fast.” At the time of his hire Fiore was one of the youngest Directors of Athletics in NCAA Division I. Since his arrival at Stony Book from Princeton University in August 2003, Fiore has hit the ground running and pointed Stony Brook on an aggressive course for success in all aspects of in-tercollegiate athletics. He has undertak-en a major restructuring of the intercol-legiate athletics program including the hiring of new coaching and administra-tive staff, dramatic facility upgrades and improved revenue generation. Fiore has also turned his attention to department-wide fundraising efforts, with his efforts seeing a dramatic increase in major gifts, annual giving revenue and overall volume of donors. In an effort to take a lead role in the university’s $300 million capital campaign, the Depart-ment of Athletics has secured several major gifts, three of which were the larg-est philanthropic gifts given to athletics in its history. In July 2005, the athletic department adopted a new philosophy for the annual Providing Athletes With Support (P.A.W.S.) fundraising cam-paign, a philosophy that streamlined the annual fundraising process to prepare Stony Brook to exceed all fundraising expectations in the future. In addition, he created the Athletic Director Advisory Council; a 19-member board comprised of Stony Brook alumni, staff and com-munity members that will advise Fiore in the fundraising advancement process. His attention to the bottom line re-sulted in a new athletic department budget process that relieved the depart-ment of a multi million dollar debt and an annual systemic deficit, resulting in a balanced budget. The first time that Stony Brook has realized that goal since moving to the Division I level. Fiore has

seen the department balance its budget every year since 2004 and has overseen a dramatic budget growth to $23 million. Beginning in the ‘04-’05 academic year Stony Brook University Athletics real-ized a near 20 percent increase in its operating budget due to new revenue streams for the department. Addition-ally, Stony Brook has teamed up with Islanders Media Inc. as the athletic de-partment continues to nurture and foster strong bonds with the Long Island cor-porate community. Under Fiore’s leadership, Stony Brook student-athletes have also at-tained new levels of achievement in the classroom. Since his arrival to Stony Brook, the GPA for America East Sea-wolf student-athletes has risen from 2.86 in 2003 to a 3.08 in the Fall of 2008. In the fall of 2008, 15 of 20 teams earned team GPAs above 3.0 and 57 percent of Stony Brook’s America East Fall student-athletes were named to the America East Honor Roll or the Ameri-ca East Commissioner’s Honor Roll for earning above a 3.0 or 3.5 GPA respec-tively. The ‘07-’08 academic year proved to be Stony Brook’s most successful season academically as its student-athletes compiled a department best overall G.P.A. of 3.06 and saw over 250 student-athletes named to the America East Honor Rolls - the most since join-ing the America East in 2001. Coincid-ing with this success, the 6,000-square foot state-of-the-art Goldstein Student-Athlete Development Center has proven to be an advantage in recruiting and for current Seawolves student-athletes. Fiore currently serves on University President Samuel L. Stanley Jr.’s Cabi-net and was also appointed by former President Kenny to co-chair the strate-gic plan for image and identity commit-tee. He has also served on the honorary degree, weekend life, NCAA certification and the university sponsorship commit-tees. In 2005 he was appointed to the Executive Committee of the America East Conference and currently serves as the Chairman of the group. Fiore

also is a member of the NCAA Division I Championships/Sports Management Cabinet and has been appointed to the NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel. In August of 2008 he was appointed to the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) executive board. Prior to his arrival at Stony Brook, he provided department-wide leadership in support of the director of athletics at Princeton University from 1999-2003, a program that supports 38 sports, 40 club sports programs and more than 1,000 student-athletes. A member of the senior management team, he was responsible for all athletic programming oversight of all varsity intercollegiate programs. In addition, Fiore directed all personnel matters including the coordi-nation of national searches for coaches, staff and administrative positions. Along with the director of athletics, he also assisted in the planning for short and long-term capital improvements. During Fiore’s tenure, Princeton achieved ex-traordinary success on the fields of play and in the classroom. A native of Long Beach, N.Y., Fiore graduated from Long Beach High School and went on to attain his Bach-elor of Arts degree from Hofstra Uni-versity, where he played free safety for the football team. Upon graduation from Hofstra, Fiore went on to receive a mas-ter’s degree in Education from Spring-field College. Additionally, he received a certificate from The Sports Management Institute held at the University of Notre Dame and University of South Carolina. Fiore and his wife Lisa have a son Michael who is seven years old. They currently reside in Stony Brook.
