The Conference Council on Youth Ministries
(CCYM) is responsible for youth ministries in the
Tennessee Conference of The United Methodist
Church. The CCYM represents the youth and
youth ministers of the 600+ churches in Middle
Tennessee from the northern border to the
southern border of the state and from the
Tennessee River to the west to the Eastern Time
Zone to the east.
The CCYM is also composed of the youth
leadership team which is selected during Youth
Annual Conference (FRESH). These include the
following: President, Vice-President, Secretary,
Communications Chair, Conference
Representative, and two Middle School at large
members. Additionally, youth representatives
from the Black Methodist Church Renewal,
Hispanic, Korean, and Native American Ministries
are selected by their corresponding groups to
serve as members of the CCYM. The Conference
Director of Young People’s Ministries, the
Conference Youth Coordinator, and a
representative from the Bishop's Cabinet serve
along side the youth to help direct and discern
the ministries of the Conference.
We meet in July, September, November, January,
May and at Youth Annual Conference in June.
Our President assists the Bishop during Annual
Conference and our youth representatives serve
as Delegates to Annual Conference. At our
meetings, the youth and adults plan and
implement ministries that seek to build disciples
of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the
world. The ministries represented in this catalog
are the efforts of the CCYM and our ministry
partners to provide opportunities for spiritual
growth through the working of the Holy Spirit
and the conveyance of God's love to all creation.
We hope that you will join us on this spiritual
journey through your prayers, your presence,
your time, and your talents. The Youth Ministries
of the Tennessee Conference requires your
involvement in order to truly fulfill the call that
God has for us in transforming our world on
Earth as it is in Heaven.
Visit our website at www.tnumcyouth.org to see

listing of the CCYM members and District Youth
Ministry Team. We want to hear from you as
well, please send your suggestions or questions

Our Covenant As Leaders (Created by the CCYM in Oct 2009)
As members and partners with
the United Methodist Church,
we will serve as leaders who
promote and encourage unity
throughout the entire
community by creating
opportunities for everyone to
experience the love and grace
of God.
A unique component of Young People’s Ministry in the
Tennessee Conference is the use of Design Teams.
Design Teams consist of youth and adults who work
together to create the ministry events found in this
booklet. Youth leadership is a priority and is most
developed and demonstrated through the practice of
creating and designing opportunities for spiritual
growth.
In order for the design teams to function as
necessary, WE NEED YOU! There are some guidelines set by our standing rules that relate to
design teams and those are listed below. If you are interested in being a part of a design team
please contact Brad Fiscus at [email protected].
THE OFFICIAL STUFF ABOUT
DESIGN TEAMS (per TNUMC Youth Standing Rules)
Design teams:
D1. Design teams will be headed by co-
chairs, one adult and one youth.
D2. Design Team chairs are selected by the
CCYM executive council.
D3. The executive committee of the CCYM
will be the design team for FRESH.
D4. The Warmth in Winter design team will
have an adult and co-adult design team leader
to ensure prior leadership experience.
D5. Warmth in Winter design team will have a
youth leader and co-leader of the design team
to ensure prior leadership experience and a
continuation of planning.
D6. No person in the conference shall serve
on more than two design teams per year.
Executive Committee members may serve on
two teams plus Warmth in Winter. The
President, as the exception, will serve on all
design teams.
THE UNOFFICIAL LIST OF DESIGN TEAMS (unofficial because we always add more)
Warmth In Winter is biggest of all of the teams.
It consists of a management team and eleven
design teams. September 11
Summer Events group helps to develop and
lead the summer events like Nashville Shores,
the Sounds, and most intensively Summer
Sizzler. May 1
Hands and Feet group helps develop this
mission retreat. From organizing the mission
projects to developing worship, this team
creates this life-changing mission experience.
Conference Communications is our newest
team. This team is charged with creating and
developing efficient modes of communication
between the conference and the local churches.
Examples include the development of an online
newsletter, our website content and managing
social networking content.
We encourage you to utilize this model in
your local church and district ministry event
planning. We know that you will find it a
powerful tool in creating ministries that
have impact and ownership among those
who participate.

District Youth Ministry Team District Youth Ministry Team District Youth Ministry Team District Youth Ministry Team ---- Tennessee Conference of The United Methodist Church is comprised of 7 districts. In an effort to better connect the local churches in the districts to each other, we are excited to announce the formation of District Youth Ministry Team. The District Youth Ministry Team will comprise of youth and youth workers whose purpose is to connect the local youth ministries for fellowship, spiritual growth and training.
District Delegates The district youth leadership team is developed through a District Delegate Application process. Any youth may apply to be a District Delegate but they must commit to being an active member of leadership in the district. Each district will have 10 delegates. These delegates will be invited to the Youth Annual Conference/FRESH event.
These delegates will serve as members of the District Youth Ministry Team and work with the adult leaders on the DYMT to design ministry opportunities in the District. The DYMT will elect two youth representatives to serve on the Executive CCYM team.
District Youth Worker Team Four Youth Workers from each district will be asked to take responsibility for one of the following four areas: 1. District Youth Minister Network 2. Leadership of a Spring District Event 3. Leadership of a Summer District Event 4. Leadership of a Fall District Event The District Youth Minister Network will serve as a means to connect youth workers to share resources, support, and training.

District Youth Worker GatheringsDistrict Youth Worker GatheringsDistrict Youth Worker GatheringsDistrict Youth Worker Gatherings———— Connecting youth workers together to serve Christ! The challenges of ministry are tough. The challenges
of ministry while feeling disconnected are even
tougher. In order to increase connectivity, gain input,
fellowship, and study the scriptures together monthly
district youth worker gatherings will be held at local
churches inside of each district.
If you would like to host a gathering for your district,
please contact Brad Fiscus, Conference Director of
Young People’s Ministries at 615-327-1533 or 1-800-
403-5795. The gathering will consist of fellowship, a
scriptural focus and study, opportunities for input and
discussion about district and conference ministry.
If you feel called to leadership then put your talents and gifts to use as part of the District Youth
Ministry Team. The District Youth Ministry Team will work
alongside District Superintendent to plan district ministry
events throughout the year. This is a great way for you to
experience leadership in the United Methodist connectional
ministry system and an opportunity to meet other youth on
fire for Christ.
The members of the District Youth Ministry Team will be a
vital component in our desire to create disciples of Jesus
Christ for the transformation of the world.

Youth Service Fund is unique to the United Meth-
odist Church. Money from this fund is raised by
youth, and given to youth to be used to help
other youth. Each year 70% of the money we
raise stays in our conference. Most of that
money is given away to youth groups who re-
quest help with their mission projects for the
year. The other 30% is given to the United Meth-
odist Division on Ministries with Young People
which gives grants internationally to help youth.
YSF is much more than just a drive for funds. It
is one way United Methodist youth respond to
God’s command that we be good stewards of all
with which God has gifted us. In addition to
good stewardship, YSF provides opportunities for
youth to engage in the mission of the Church,
allowing them to be in ministry to a broken world
and to live as disciples of Jesus Christ who are
working to transform the world around them.
Where do your contributions go?
For every dollar given:
46 2/3 cents goes to ministries which serve
youth inside (1/2) and outside (1/2) the geo-
graphic bounds of the Tennessee Conference.
These grants are awarded by the CCYM.
30 cents goes directly to the Youth Service
Fund administered by the Division on Minis-
tries with Young People, to support minis-
tries around the world which serve the needs
of youth and children.
23 1/3 cents stays with the Tennessee Confer-
ence Council on Youth Ministries to aid in
funding the administration of YSF and other
youth ministries of the CCYM. Events like
Hands and Feet, mission projects at Warmth
in Winter, and other ministries aresupported
by your contributions.
You can contribute individually or through your
church or district. Some youth groups tithe
(10%) to YSF when they are fundraising for other
causes, e.g. for a mission trip or Warmth In Win-
ter.
Checks should be made payable to
Youth Service Fund and mailed to:

youth in the name of Jesus Christ and you would
like to be considered for a YSF grant, applications
are available through the Youth Ministries Office
or can be downloaded at our website. The appli-
cation deadline is April 15, and grants are deter-
mined by the CCYM at its May meeting. Grant
recipients are notified in May. The grant awards

“Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity.”
-1 Timothy 4:12 (NIV)
Second Sunday of September
We believe that we, the youth of the Tennessee
Conference, are the church of today not just “of
the future.” God has given us gifts, ideas, and
talents to lead others in unique ways. We
encourage you to use those gifts to help lead
worship in your local congregation throughout
the year. The CCYM suggests that at least once
a year or more, your youth ministry should take
the lead for the whole worship service. As a
way to mark it on the calendar, we suggest that
you work with your pastor to consider having
youth-led worship the second Sunday of
September. Share your gifts and talents and
“set an example for the believers.”

Learn the facts.
Every 30 seconds, an innocent child in Africa dies of malaria. This disease causes immeasurable suffering across the African continent. Left untreated, malaria's
flu-like symptoms - fever, chills, vomiting, headache - lead to convulsions, organ failure and unnecessary deaths.
All caused by a parasite called Plasmodium, transmitted through the bite of a tiny mosquito.
Imagine No Malaria is an extraordinary effort of The people of The United Methodist Church to eliminate death and suffering from malaria in Africa by 2015. Just as the cross is a sign to us of God’s love, we are called to be a sign of God’s love and commitment to the world.

As Christians we are called to make a difference in
the world for Jesus Christ. We are called to serve
each other out of that love. Mother Teresa once
said “In this life we cannot do great things. We can
only do small things with great love.” On April 17th,
we encourage you to do “small things with great
love” in your community.
This is not an opportunity like any of the others in
this magazine, this expression of service will be or-
ganized by you in your community. So what are
you being called to do where you live? Who do you
see that needs to be shown “great love”? Inspire your youth group and your church to “BE
THE CHANGE” that is needed in your community to connect all to the love of Jesus Christ.
We want to be a part of celebrating with you after you finish your day
of service. So join us at Franklin First United Methodist in Sanctu-
ary East at 6 p.m. for a special worship celebration. You will be
inspired by incredible music by the RE Worship Band.
Our special guest speaker for the evening will be Shane Claiborne.
During college, one of Shane’s professor remarked, “Being a Chris-tian is about choosing Jesus and deciding to do something incredibly daring with your life.” Taking up that challenge, his faith led him to a life many describe as an “Ordinary Radical.” Shane will share with us his call to serve the least, the last, and the lost.
When you join us, please bring some canned food to benefit those in need in Middle Tennessee. Email Brad at [email protected] for questions about this ministry opportunity.

deeper understandings of God working in our lives.

Now beginning its 4th year, Hands and Feet has
become an important part of the ministry that we
seek to do as we work to create disciple of Jesus
Christ for the transformation of the world!
Hands and Feet is a mission-focused event with
lots of options and ways to be in mission to the
community of Murfreesboro.
Focusing on Serving Others
During the day on Saturday, groups will be spread
across the host area serving the community. This
event began in 2007 when 65 youth and adults
served 7 projects throughout the Murfreesboro
area. In 2008 & 2009, the event expanded to 200
youth and adults reaching out in Christ’s love and
service to 19 area projects. Now in 2010,
Hands and Feet is expanding to 3 sites
across the Conference in order to better
serve those in need. This will be facilitated
through a
partnership
with the
Committee
for Mercy
and Mission
and VIM.
The variety of projects served in the past three
years include:
Building a wheelchair ramp for a girl with no
hands or feet
Prep work on a facility to provide job training to
homeless people
Food and supply drive for those we served as
well as the Domestic Violence Center
 Roof over a porch
Cleaning a gymnasium at a foster home facility
Young Adults
There will be projects offered exclusively for young
adults. Young adults may register individually or as
a team.
Celebration Saturday Night
A highlight of the event is a worship celebration
with a Christian artist. In 2009, The Whatever
Worship Project inspired us with spirit-filled music.
Housing
Participants will stay at host churches. Specific
housing arrangements will be determined at a later
date. The registration fee includes housing, the
concert on Saturday evening, lunch and dinner on
Saturday, breakfast
on Sunday and
supplies for your
work project.
Registration
In order to facilitate
safety, supervision,
and to ensure proper
transportation to job
sites, we ask that
groups register with a minimum youth to adult
ratio of 6 to 1. Church vans and other large
vehicles are needed to facilitate transport to sites
as well as materials to worksites. If you are not
able to meet this ratio requirement, please contact
the conference office to determine the possibility of
pairing with another group.
Safe sanctuary policies are expected to be
followed.

Over twenty-seven years ago a group of youth
and youth workers came together to pray about
the direction in which God was calling them to go.
From this time a decision was made to begin the
First Tennessee Youth Retreat in 1982 at Cedar
Crest Camp. The theme for this event was
“Warmth in the Winter.” Twenty-eight years
later, Warmth In Winter is one of the premier
youth led ministry gatherings in the Southeast
Jurisdiction of The United Methodist Church.
Warmth In Winter has grown from its original
attendance of 62 youth and adults in 1982 to just
over 2,000 participants. Churches from across
the conference and every district find that
Warmth In Winter is one of the most energizing
and cherished ministry events on their busy
calendars.
Location: Warmth In Winter will be held for the
2nd time at the beautiful Embassy Suites Hotel
and Convention Center in Murfreesboro.
Design Teams. Warmth In Winter is developed
utilizing a multitude of youth and youth workers
from across the conference. Youth are
empowered with the opportunity to create and
lead this event using our Design Team model. To
view a complete list of the Design Teams that are
utilized in the creation of this event, go to our
website at www.tnumcyouth.org. You have every
opportunity to come and join us as we develop
this event each year. The start of the Warmth In
Winter design process begins on September 11th.
Check the calendar for details.
Schedule: The schedule will be finalized through
planning sessions however you can count on large
group sessions, workshops, district meetings,
Youth Service Fund Challenges and free time.
Housing: You are responsible for arranging
housing for your group. Contact the conference
office for local hotel information. Local churches
may also be willing to share “lock-in” space.
Contact the conference office or local churches for
more information.

Quarterly Pastoral Care WorkshopsQuarterly Pastoral Care WorkshopsQuarterly Pastoral Care WorkshopsQuarterly Pastoral Care Workshops
During 2010, the Young People’s Ministry of the
Tennessee Conference will offer quarterly Pastoral Care
workshops for all youth workers. Ministering with young
people is a challenging calling. While our focus is
connecting them to Jesus Christ, the struggles they face in
life become the biggest roadblock to receiving the grace
they so desperately need. These workshops will help the
youth worker develop skills and tools as well as connect
them to resources that will equip them to discern the correct
course necessary to help those in need.
More details will be given at http://tnumcyouth.org about the
upcoming trainings and information will be sent out detailing these training opportunities.
Pastoral Care Workshop #1 - Tennessee Lives Count Tennessee’s Youth Suicide Prevention and Early Intervention Training
This workshop will help youth workers recognize the warning signs of
suicide in youth and young adults, and how to intervene and save a life.
The objective of this workshop is to provide participants with: - general knowledge of the societal view of suicide, by addressing myths, facts, attitudes and opinions

Great scholarship opportunities for United
Methodist students!
Martin Methodist embraces its heritage as a
Methodist institution and is intentional about being
in ministry with local congregations. Integral to that
mission is the Cal Turner, Jr. Center for Church
Leadership (CCL), born out of a
partnership between the college
and the Tennessee Annual
Conference.
One important program of
the CCL is the Ben Alford Church
Leader Scholarship, where two
United Methodist high school
seniors receive a full-cost four-year scholarship,
valued at more than $100,000. The annual deadline
to apply is March 1.
Plenty of other scholarship opportunities are
available as well. For more information, visit . .

Scholarships.”
