The Iwaki May Day was held at Onahama’s Suwa Jinja on Sunday the 9th, and

many people came to see this year’s short and sweetened festival. Everyone

enjoyed live performances and delicious English Cream Tea – sweetened tea and

with his semi-acoustic guitar, next Rob De Lancey played Celtic music with his

Irish Fiddle & Flute, and then Matt Hawthorne & James Foley blew the crowd

away with their amazing Shamisen performance. Next the specially-formed Iwaki

Morris Dancers performed a May Day dance using bamboo sticks and dancing in

Japanese festival headbands (hachimaki). The adorable children from Wakagi

Kindergarten took centre stage for the finale as they danced round the Maypole in

white and pink uniforms. Congratulations to John Loynes for organising a great

Sunday afternoon, and thanks to Sky Store for providing the English Cream Tea.

Gods belonging to Onahama’s Suwa Shrine went for a swim on Tuesday the 4th of

May. The occasion was the annual Suwa Jinja Dai Matsuri festival, and in recent

years many international residents of Iwaki and throughout Fukushima prefecture

have been invited to take part. Shrines are carried from the Shrine through local

Henoko and Oura Bay Undersea Photo Exhibition The Ryukyu Archipelago consists of the Amami, Okinawa, Miyako and Yaeyama Islands. These islands have had

their own unique and original cultures since they were a part of the ancient Kingdom of Ryukyu. The Kingdom of

Ryukyu was an independent dynasty which ruled most of the Ryukyu Islands from the 15th to the 19th Century.

Aquamarine Fukushima has just opened an exhibition of undersea photos from Henoko & Oura Bay, east of

Nago city, Okinawa. Henoko is the area where there are many kinds of sea grass along the coast, and where the

unusual sea-mammal the Dugong lives and feeds. Huge Blue Corals approximately 50m long were found in

offshore coral reefs in Oura Bay in 2007. Within Japan it is the largest, most internationally-recognised coral reef

after Shiraho on Ishigaki Island. More than 35 kinds of newly-discovered shrimps and crabs were found here,

and this area receives a lot of attention from many people all over the world.

In recent years, this bay has also become a part of “Camp Schwab”, because it is right next to the existing U.S.

military base in Henoko & Oura Bay. However, this is a sea in which a lot of fish and sea creatures live as well.

Please come and have a look at these photos, and give some thought to this beautiful undersea environment.

Exhibition Dates: 25 May 2010 – 11 May 2011

Where: Aquamarine Fukushima, Onahama, Iwaki

Exhibition features: Approx 700 undersea and aquatic photos

Photos taken by: Diving team Sunakku Sunafukin
