United States Institute of PeacePublic Institution
2007. Moshe Safdie and Associates.
employer: Moshe Safdie and Assoc.
project title: United States Institute of Peace
site: Washington, D.C.
program: convention and offices
project manager: Paul Gross
my role: The project had just commenced construction documents when I joined the
firm, and I worked on them from start to finish. The majority of my responsibility was
in coordinating the drawings from all consultants with the architectural intent. The
different systems usually met at the ceiling, and therefore, the RCPs became the most
important drawings for this effort. All work was done in Revit.
competition posters were posted throughout GSAPP and on online venues

reflected programEvery type of space has a design intent which must be expressed with every detail. In Safdie’s office, the ceiling is treated as an interior elevation and is therefore studied case by case. While Revit models shared with the engineers assisted in catching coor-dination problems, I was ultimately inclined to redraw every con-sultant’s drawings and learn their constraints in order to produce the desired aesthetic while abiding by their respective code.
