2011 – A Year of Visioning

This month, I invite you to begin thinking of 2011 as a year of visioning at Zion. You will have the opportunity to help shape our congregation‘s vision and where we will be heading in the next 5 to 7 years.

One of things Zion was looking for in its new Senior Pastor was someone who could lead the congregation with vision. Sometimes people think this means that the pastor goes away and spends time in prayer, reading scripture and reflection and then comes back with a vision for the congregation. I invite you to think of developing a congregation‘s vision in another way – as a process that involves the entire congregation.

A small group of people, the Visioning Task Force, has been working on identifying a process for the congregation to use that will involve everyone in developing a vision for Zion. This task force is not creating the vision – just the process we will use. With this process, the Visioning Task Force (Karen Mattson, Scott Morin, Rick Johnson, Carol Clark, and myself) will seek to draw the entire congregation into a process that will eventually identify 3 to 7 big initiatives to guide the congregation‘s efforts for the next one to maybe 7 years. These initiatives will:

Be big goals identifying where we will intentionally invest our time, our energy and our financial resources.

Shape what new ministries are started and how our current ministries reshape themselves.

Influence how our current staff focus their time and what new staff positions are created.

Help shape who we are becoming as a congregation and who we will be.

Reflect our congregation‘s values, our priorities, our collective hopes and dreams of what kind of a church we want to be.

Reflect who we understand God is calling us to be as a church.

Describe what we believe God is calling us to do in mission.

Our Reaching For Tomorrow events are the very first step in developing a vision. In these events you will be invited to answer two big questions: ―What are the gifts, talents, and passions you most want to share inside Zion?‖ and ―What are the gifts, talents and passions you most want to share outside Zion?‖ There will also be refreshments, fellowship and great conversations about what God is doing at Zion.

Please attend one of these five events and help shape our vision!

It’s Lute Time at Zion!

Ticket Information

On Friday, October 29 Zion will hold its annual Lutefisk / Meatball dinner. The dinner will be from 4:30-7:00pm. Tickets are available at ZionBuffalo.org, in the church office, or watch for the ticket seller in the narthex between services on Sunday mornings October 10, 17 or 24. Tickets are $12 in advance and $13 at the door. Second helpings will be available for a $1 donation to help local families through the Buffalo Food Shelf and other projects.

Volunteer Needs

Many hands are needed to provide this delicious dinner. All new helpers are needed and welcome!

Be here on Monday, October 25 at 6:30pm to make meatballs, or on Thursday, October 28 at 6:30 to peel potatoes and set up the dining room. Helpers will be needed the night of the dinner to serve and clean up.

Barbary Coast

The Barbary Coast Dixieland Band will be with us again this year on October 31, as they have for the past several years.

The Barbary Coast Band started playing together as a banjo band leading group singing at a peanut and beer shack in 1967, and have led worship services of different denominations throughout the area since 1984.

This has been a very popular and well attended worship experience at Zion. They will participate in both the 8:30 and 10:30 services. Please come early and enjoy this unique worship opportunity.

Golf Outing Results

Golfers had a great day at the Ed Blair Classic at Wild Marsh in late August.

The winning team, with a score of 28 was Dan Hanson, Judy Bergquist, Wes and Mary Mahlberg. Closest to the pin was Melissa for women and Bob Strommen for men, and the longest drive was Joell Morin for women and Scott Morin for men.

Contests and the sale of ―mulligans‖ raised $150 for the Buffalo Food Shelf.

you reading his book, Power Surge: Six Marks of Discipleship for a Changing Church? Books are still available at a reduced cost from the information desk or church office for those that need a copy.

Discussion groups continue to form, and it‘s not too late to find a group

that will work for you. Groups are listed at ZionBuffalo.org/PT/PowerSurgeGroups. There is also a ‗Power Surge at Zion‘ Facebook group which can be

your small group, or it can be an additional resource and discussion for those meeting with any other small group.

The six weekly discussion guides for the congregational study written by Jim Pence, our Kairos consultant, who is working with Zion on A Promising Tomorrow, are available online and at the information desk.

A Promising Tomorrow includes four connected components: spiritual growth activities, visioning, stewardship education, and congregational resource development (giving of time, talents, and finances).

Reaching for Tomorrow

As we are learning from Michael Foss‘ book, Power Surge, ―Vision is a compelling picture of what the community of faith would look like if it was truly effective in living out its beliefs and values through its mission.‖

Who is God calling us to be? How is God calling us to participate in our community?

Our Country? Our World?

Come be part of the discussion and help us discover what shape God is calling us to…

Zion has been through a lot of change in the past few years. While many important ministries have continued, much energy has been focused internally on staffing and committee work. It‘s time to take a step back, and think about who and what God is calling us to be—individually, and as a community of faith—in the years to come.

A Visioning Task Force has begun working to help the congregation frame this process – but its work won‘t work without YOUR help. Although the main work of the Task Force will begin in 2011, five congregational events have been scheduled in October to give everyone an opportunity to brainstorm more about the gifts, interests and passions of Zion people. These Reaching for Tomorrow events are a time to gather together to help shape a vision for the Zion community of faith.

All members of Zion are encouraged to participate in one of the Reaching for Tomorrow events. At each event participants will have the opportunity to meet and visit with new friends and old ones to help us all understand more about the gifts, interests and passions in the congregation. They will also hear brief presentations from Pastor Mike Foss, author of Power Surge, and Pastor Ted, as well as enjoy food and conversation.

Choose the date and time that works best for you. Perhaps if you are retired the weekday morning would work well ... or if you have young children the Saturday morning. Seating is limited to 150 at each session. Everyone confirmation age and above is invited to attend. Child care will be provided for younger children.

Food For Friends Freezer Cooking Day

It‘s that time again to stock the Food for Friends freezer. Volunteers will be cooking at church on Saturday, October 2, from 9am-noon. Cooking days are a fun and social time as well as a time to practice discipleship by making over 100 freezer meals ... a great way to get to know others at Zion! Additional volunteers can pre-cook meat a day or two in advance.

Another opportunity to be part of this important program is making and delivering meals at a time that works for you, perhaps to someone in your own neighborhood.

Food For Friends (also known as FFF) is a much appreciated ministry to help ease the burden of our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ who are going through a particularly difficult time in their life. If you know of someone who could use a meal, please find a freezer meal in the FFF freezer to deliver, or notify the church of the need and the FFF crew will arrange for a warm and/or frozen meal to be delivered by a volunteers.

Zionaires

On Wednesday, October 20, the Zionaires seniors group will meet in Fellowship Hall at 9am. Guest speakers will be Eric Nagel, Director of the Buffalo Community Center, who will share information about activities offered by the City of Buffalo, and Zion member Kelly Hanson, an attorney, who will speak about legal and other issues that we face in our ‗golden years.‘ The 2011 calendar of events will also be discussed.

Coming up in November, the group will gather at the Wright County Heritage Center to decorate the best looking Christmas Tree as part of a wonderful display of various holiday trees.

In December, Zionaires will share in a communion service and be treated to a holiday dinner with the Zion Staff.

Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet

Zion Book Club

The Zion Book Club will meet on Monday, October 11 at 7pm in the Library to discuss Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford.

Henry Lee is a 12-year-old Chinese boy who falls in love with Keiko Okabe, a 12-year-old Japanese girl, while they are scholarship students at a prestigious private school in World War II Seattle. Henry hides the relationship from his parents, who would disown him if they knew he had a Japanese friend. His father insists that Henry wear an "I am Chinese" button everywhere he goes because Japanese residents of Seattle have begun to be shipped off by the thousands to relocation centers. This is an old-fashioned historical novel that alternates between the early 1940s and 1984, after Henry's wife Ethel has died of cancer. A particularly appealing aspect of the story is young Henry's fascination with jazz and his friendship with Sheldon, an older black saxophonist just making a name for himself in the many jazz venues near Henry's home. Women’s Ministry Planning

All women are welcome to help plan a

year of women’s events and Bible study

on Tuesday, October 12 at 6:30pm in

the Wilderness Room (behind the

kitchen).

Women of Zion encourages Bible Study

participation and/or input towards

events held for women and families

throughout the year such as the Mother

Daughter Brunch, Santa Lucia Supper,

and Prayer Sister Tea. Other outreach

includes service projects, helping at

funerals, homebound visits, and

providing the Portals of Prayer

devotional booklets for the

congregation.

We strengthen each other in faith and grow through our

ministry.

More Gospel With Robert Robinson

Raise the Roof

Lutheran Churches will join together again this fall to make wonderful gospel music with Twin Cities legend Robert Robinson on Saturday, October 23. The concert will be held at 7pm at Westwood Lutheran Church in St Louis Park. The gospel choir will be made up of members from Zion and Westwood as well as Redeemer Lutheran Church in North Minneapolis. Raise the Roof proceeds will help Redeemer replace the roof of their church building. Tickets are available at ZionBuffalo.org, or call the church office.

Rehearsals for the gospel choir will be held at Westwood Lutheran Church on Mondays, October 11 and 18 from 6:30-8:30pm. Scored music (4 songs) will be provided. All ages from high school and up are welcome. Register on Zion‘s website.

Home is Where Your Heart Is

The people of Zion have wonderful opportunities to serve, not only at home here in Buffalo, but across the miles. Whether it be alongside our mission partner church in North Minneapolis or through the All Kids Can Learn International (AKCLI) organization in Zambia at the ―Village of Hope.‖

As Steve Peterson mentioned in his Global Mission Ministry article last month, ―There are so many ways that Zion can provide support to [AKCLI].‖ Certainly, the same can be said about Zion‘s support of Redeemer Lutheran Church, our mission partner church in North Minneapolis. Giving of our time, treasures and talents can take many forms.

You may not know of Redeemer Center for Life (RCFL), which is essentially the social ministry arm of Redeemer Lutheran Church. RCFL is a nonprofit organization, whose mission statement is ―to be a beacon of hope for residents of the Harrison Neighborhood,‖ a neighborhood affected by poverty, with the purpose ―to develop compelling programs and partnerships that strengthen the Harrison Neighborhood of North Minneapolis and complement the ministries of Redeemer Lutheran Church.‖

As Zion kicks off another year of ministry, let us prayerfully search our own hearts, asking ourselves ―Where is my home?‖

Bloodmobile

The American Red Cross Bloodmobile will be back at Zion on November 15, 2010. All are encouraged to consider donating blood or helping with the many volunteer needs including setup, greeting, refreshments, and cleanup. Food Shelf Feasts

This fall, Zion will participate in two projects in partnership with the Buffalo Food Shelf.

On Thursday, November 18, Thanksgiving Baskets will be distributed at Zion. Volunteers can help assemble and distribute the baskets from 3-5pm.

On Tuesday, December 14, Christmas Baskets will be distributed in a similar manner. Families will also be served holiday snacks.

Garage and Bake Sale

A Fundraiser for Faith in Action of

Wright County will be held on

108 Division Street, Buffalo.

School Supplies

A big thank you to those who

contributed school supply donations

which were combined with other

churches involved in Love INC—Big

Woods and the Food Shelf. We

collected about $8,000 worth of school

supplies. Kits were assembled at Zion

for appropriate grade levels and also

added to many backpacks. They were

taken to the Food Shelf for distribution

to 220 kids. Leftover supplies were

donated to missions in Guatemala and

Jamaica along with the Hanover and

Annandale Food Shelves and local

schools.

Love INC Gala

Love INC Big Woods will he holding

their First Annual Gala on Sunday,

November 14 at Christ the King

Retreat Center. The event will feature

hors d'oeuvres, a silent auction, and

music from the Dahmen Brothers from

4:30-8pm.

Veterans

Zion will honor service personnel and

Veterans during November. Contact

Roger and Sandy Brenny if you have

Rivers of Hope

In December Zion will adopt families

affected by domestic violence and

support them by providing Christmas

presents through Rivers of Hope.

A Promising Tomorrow Depends on Today

In a Jimmy Buffett song he says he bought a wrist watch that most people would say is broken. It simply has one word on it … NOW. Well you really can‘t argue with that. That is what time it is ... now. And five minutes later when we get there it will be now again. It‘s really the only time that we have. Sure we can plan for the future. We do that in the now.

A little joke that I have with my coworkers is a little phrase about myself – ―future Tom.‖ Most afternoons the last thing I do at work is leave a note of where I left off. It‘s extremely important to do on Fridays. This is so that ―future Tom‖ won‘t have to puzzle about where I left off. When I have my favorite candy bar at lunch I tell them that ―past Tom‖ was being

very nice to ―present Tom,‖ look what he packed for me.

Let‘s do the same sort of thing for ourselves at Zion. Let‘s

do things today, right now, that will make things better for the whole congregation at

Zion. Get involved, read the ―Power Surge‖

book and attend a ―Reaching For Tomorrow‖

event. We owe it to our ―future selves.‖ I have been blessed to be involved

Cheerful Giving to God

This month is the last of the six

stewardship values from Mr. Charles R.

Lane’s book Ask, Thank, Tell. Value #6

is “Cheerful Giving.”

Mr. Lane refers to 2 Corinthians 9:6-8

“The one who sows sparingly will also

reap sparingly and the one who sows

bountifully will also reap bountifully.

Each of you must give as you have

made up your mind, not reluctantly or

under compulsion, for God loves a

cheerful giver. And God is able to

provide you with every blessing in

abundance, so that by always having

enough of everything, you may share

abundantly in every good work.”

In the last five months of this newsletter

we have touched on a different giving

value. They were intentional, regular,

generous, first, and proportional. We

briefly summarized Mr. Lane’s thoughts

on these five giving values. In his

writings for this value of cheerful giving

he notes that “The key to being a

cheerful giver is to practice the other

stewardship values. If the first five

stewardship values characterize your

giving, you will be cheerful in your

giving. If they don’t, you won’t. It is

that simple.”

Are you “cheerful” in your giving? Do

you feel good when you write your check

to Zion? Jesus says, where your

treasure is, and where you put your

money, that is where your heart will be.

Being a “Cheerful” giver will help you

grow in your relationship with God. I

hope the six stewardship values that we

have highlighted over the last six

months have helped you identify your

giving value. Giving by these six values

will lead your heart to Jesus.

Thrivent Choice Dollars

Eligible Thrivent members can now help

direct some of Thrivent Financial’s

charitable outreach funds to preferred

organizations through the Thrivent

Choice program.

It has been estimated that members of

Zion have a combined $4000 available

to direct!

The Maker of all human beings (GOD) is recalling all units manufactured, regardless of make or year, due to a serious defect in the primary and central component of the heart.

This is due to a malfunction in the original prototype units code named Adam and Eve, resulting in the reproduction of the same defect in all subsequent units. This defect has been technically termed "Sub-sequential Internal Non-Morality," or more commonly known as S.I.N., as it is primarily expressed.

Once connected, please upload your burden of SIN through the REPENTANCE procedure. Next, download ATONEMENT from the Repair Technician, Jesus, into the heart component.

No matter how big or small the SIN defect is, Jesus will replace it with: Love, Joy, Peace, Patience,

Kindness, Goodness, Faithfulness, Gentleness, Self control.

Kevin Lincicum Benefit

Zion‘s Jubilee worship team will host a benefit dinner and on Sunday, October 3, to support Kevin Lincicum (pictured below), a member of Zion and part of the Jubilee worship team. Kevin has large medical expenses from his recent amputation and hospitalization as well as the need for a wheelchair and prosthetics for both legs to give him the ability to walk independently.

Wright County Pork Producers pork chops will be served after the last worship service (starting around 11:30am). Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for under 12, with free hot dogs available for children under 5.

There will be music from 12:30-3pm including selections from Tim Lungstrom & Carol Moore, the Buffalo Community Theater, and Jubilee.

Wright County Thrivent Board will provide matching funds for this event.

Driver Improvement Course for Seniors

The Driver Improvement course at Zion is open to the public and led by a MN Highway Safety & Research Center certified instructor. Class content will include the most up-to-date information in regards to driver safety, new laws, and vehicle technology. This class has something for everyone! The fee for the four hour refresher course is $20 and the eight hour course is $24. The course will be held at Zion on these dates from 9am-1pm:

October 12th (4 Hour Refresher Course)

November 9 & 10 (8 Hour Refresher Course)

December 7 (4 Hour Refresher Course

Those age 55 and older who complete the course qualify for a ten percent discount on their auto insurance premiums for three years, according to Minnesota law. First time participants must complete the initial eight hours of training and a four hour refresher class every three years to maintain the 10% discount.

Singing the Faith Festival

The 2010 Singing the Faith Hymn

Festival at Luther Seminary will be held

at 7pm on October 31, and this year

celebrates 150 years of the

Scandinavian Augustana Synod

tradition in the Lutheran church. Luther

welcomes the Gustavus Adolphus choir,

under the direction of Gregory Aune, as

the guest choir.

Call Committee Update

The call committee, along with Pastor

Ted, is interviewing a number of

candidates. We are not rushing the

process, but rather following the Holy

Spirit’s lead. Thankfully we have Pastor

Karri until we find a new Associate

Pastor. She is doing such a wonderful

job that a number of congregation

members have brought her name to the

call committee as a great choice for an

Associate Pastor. As much as we

might love to keep her, it is against

Synod protocol to call an interim pastor

for a permanent position. As always,

we welcome your prayers in this

important venture.

Quincy’s Hat Story

My mom was impressed with the cute

hat her friend made. She borrowed her

hat loom and I was dying to use it —

finally, she agreed. I thought it was

really fun and couldn’t wait to get my

very own — I’ve been buying yarn ever

since. I also bought a hat loom to make

hats for my sister’s Barbies and

discovered it was a flower maker!

I started my business by selling hats to

my family, friends and at a local Apple

Orchard. I made hats for my great

grandmas for Christmas and also

donated a hat to Harvest of Hands’

silent auction last year to help raise

money for the hungry.

I cranked out many hats this past

summer in preparation for my

participation in the Uptown Art Fair (in

the youth section) —I raffled off a hat

and raised $120 for Feed My Starving

Children (I was amazed when I learned

that was enough for 631 meals!) Now,

I’m excited to have my hats for sale,

downtown Buffalo, at A Wreath of

Franklin and to be able to have another

hat in the silent auction at the

upcoming Harvest of Hands Bazaar!

My favorite time to make them is while

watching Gilligan’s Island.

The 2011 7th & 8th Grade Mission Trip

will take place in St. Paul, MN - June

19-24.

The cost is only $300/student.

There is a $100/student deposit

required by November 1.

Inspiring Your Children

Sunday school is off to a great start! Thank you to all the parents for involving your children in Zion‘s many Children‘s Ministry opportunities. At our teacher training, we encouraged our teachers to answer this question,

“Who has inspired their faith and why?”

Nearly 80% of the people in the room answered either their parents, or their grandparents. The common reason given,

“They took me to Sunday school, they took me church.”

Thank you to all the parents and volunteers for bringing your children to church, and leading them in the ways of Jesus Christ. We look forward to another wonderful year with all the Sunday school students!

Club 456

Club 456 is a program open to all 4th, 5th and 6th grade students. We meet bimonthly to spend time together, fellowship with our peers and spend some quality time enjoying our brothers and sisters in Christ! Our first event will be roller skating on Saturday, October 9 at St. Cloud Skatin Place. The bus leaves Zion at 11am and returns at 4pm. Cost is $13.50 per child including admission, skate rental, pizza, pop, and bus. Inline skate rental is available for an extra $2. Signup online at ZionBuffalo.org/Club456.

Christmas Program

Kids’ Place

The name is new, and the activities are just a little different. Kids‘ Club was a program that offered a bit more structure, and Bible lessons as part of the weekly routine; Kids‘ Place will be more of a childcare setting. There will be structure and supervision, but it will be more of a safe place for kids to play on Wednesday after school, after choir or before choir. Beth Solberg will be in charge of Kids‘ Place. Beth was a Zion Day Camp director during the summer daycare program. She is a member of Zion and has served on the church council and the Christian Education Committee. Beth has volunteered with VBS, Club 456, Sweetheart dance and other children‘s Ministry activities.
