Match Reports – Petrea Cahir 16/05/10

The fight amongst the top three teams for first position on the Senior Women's B Grade ladder currently comes down to percentage. Eltham has only just slipped to third position, but has the same number of wins as the two top teams. The

team has found it difficult to get into a groove this season due to a number of public holidays and byes disrupting the

fixture - they are yet to play three games in a row. Round 4 was the first taste of real competition that Eltham has had since the first game of the season. They met MCC's women with whom they share a special camaraderie after touring

New Zealand with them in 2009. There were hugs all around before and after the game, but an atmosphere of fierce competitiveness was evident on the field. Eltham shone in the first half. They played hard, wanted the ball and were able

to slow the ball down in attack. Work on and off the ball looked promising with Drew Fitzpatrick setting up some strong

plays. After a number of weeks off, Tess Woodward was able to convert 4 goals before the half-time siren. Eltham's energy seemed to drop in the second half whereas MCC seemed to spark some fire in their belly with two of their State

League players taking the field with gusto. A number of MCC's fast breaks meant that the game became stressful in defence and the pressure was on Eltham to continue their strong attack from the first half. Eltham held on to win ?-?.

The team appreciated a challenging match and it was the first of those for a few new players.

30/5/2010 Round 5 of the Senior women’s season was destined to be tough for Eltham as they came up against the top team,

Camberwell – 2009 Premiers. The Panthers’ aim was to enjoy the challenge and the team did well to achieve this goal and try some new things in a match that ended with a (16-1) score line. Unfortunately injuries have struck a few Eltham

players which happened to almost wipe out their normal attack line. Nonetheless habitual mid-fielders Jacqui Solly and

Tess Wendell were ready and willing to spread their wings onto the forward line. With strong support and direction from experienced attacker Jessica Ivory, Eltham was able to settle the ball down in attack – something that the team has been

working on. In goals, Daniela Norman was under some intense pressure from some State League level opposition players and put up a great fight. Lauren Clayton shone in the mid-field and helped Eltham to find a rhythm and use the game as

a team-building experience.

2010 U13 Girls Team

This season the U13 girls have the luxury of having two coaches, the focused and experienced Tess

Woodward and the young and enthusiastic Assistant Coach Tess Wendel. The coaches are busy moulding the

mix of new and returning players into a solid competitive team that is exciting to watch.

We are definitely on the winning track as existing players keep coming back and each week new ones are

expressing interest to join. We currently have 16 keen players that are developing into a strong team.

Our newly joined players - Siena, Tanja, Michellie, Ashleigh and Georgia are settling in well and their rate

of improvement is amazing. Our returning players - Emily, Rachel, Isabella, Kate, Sasha, Brooke, Bess, Remy,

Dani, Jessica and Emma are demonstrating strong leadership to new players and are consolidating their skills.

Starting a season with lots of newly beginning players always presents a challenge. But the girls are living

up to the challenge. We are now at the half way mark of the season and the wins are starting to come and we

look forward to some exciting close contests.

2010 U15 Girls Team

At the half way mark of the girls under 15 season, Footscray has established themselves as the team to

beat. Of the rest of the competition our under 15 team is arm wrestling with the best of them.

Deanne and Sonja are very excited by this talented batch of youngsters with the best part of this group

being that unlike a number of other teams we do not rely to heavily on 2 or 3 players but get an even

contribution right across the board.

In defence we have the ever reliable Maddi , Bridget and Emma having great seasons in front of who I

believe to be the best goal keeper in the competition Kellie. Surely state honours await kellie later this season.

Our midfield runners have been outstanding this season with Ruby, Sasha and Danni teaming together and

showing great leadership to the rest of team with Remy chipping in from offence and sometimes defence

New import players Maudie and Aimee have been fantastic players for us both scoring heavily throughout

the season as well as adding solid defence and just genuine experience to the group

You wouldn't have an under 15 Eltham team without drafting or blooding a big number of U 13 players. Of

those players Brooke, Kate, Isabella, Michellie & Georgia have been terrific and show a great future for Eltham

girl’s teams. bearing in mind that Isabella 10yrs old Georgia 10 yrs old and Michellie 9yrs old have all scored

goals in the 15s!

Staggering to think how good this trio will be in 3 or 4 years time.

Although at the tumble turn mark of the season our girls sit at 3 wins and 5 losses we fully expect to

reverse that stat by seasons end.

EDITOR’S SECTION Diane Gent—Deputy Vice President – Newsletter - [email protected]

Hi All, This weekend looks to be a fantastic one and a great opportunity to show our club

spirit with three senior men’s teams and a hosting round for the women which will see the grounds full of lacrosse all weekend!

It would be great to see lots of gold & black supporters and helpers over the two

days so come along and show the other clubs how fantastic Eltham is. Two weeks ago I was down at the club early on the Saturday morning and as I

drove in I can’t express how wonderful it was to see every ground in use and a sea of gold & black juniors out there having fun.

We were lucky to have all but one of the under 12 teams playing at home that day

and for the entire morning the club was vibrant and alive! It made my day and I know other clubs commented on how strong Eltham’s junior program must be.

This week we have two under twelve teams at home (9.30am) so if you have the

chance, come down and cheer them on. Di Gent.

CLUB DAY 31st JULY, 2010 This year Club Day will be held on Saturday 31st July, 2010. We have been allocated 4 Senior home games and are presently negotiating with Clubs to have one game start at 12.15 pm. Letters are being sent to players in the 2000 Grand Final as per the April issue of the Newsletter. We are also hoping to have an unveiling of a commemoration to the construction of the Multi Purpose Area and will be inviting our Federal and State Members of Parliament together with local councillors. As per last year I will be looking for people to help with rosters, preparation, afternoon tea and the canteen – if you can help please contact me. Thank you, Mary C Millar Vice President [email protected]
