After helping to produceone of the most significantseasons in the history of

the Cal Poly men’s basketballprogram, Joe Callero returns forhis third year as head coach ofthe Mustangs this fall. Selectedto finish fifth in the Big West, the2010-11 Mustangs insteadmatched single-season programrecords for highest showing inthe Big West standings (sec-ond), highest seeding for theconference tournament (second)and total Big West victories (10).One of the top defensive teamsin Division I last season, Cal Poly– out of 335 programs – rankedthird nationally in opponentthree-point percentage (28.7),sixth in opponent scoring aver-age (58.9 points per game) and25th in opponent field goaldefense (40.0 percent). TheMustangs also ranked 42ndnationally by committing just 11.9turnovers per game.

Under Callero’s direction lastyear, guard Shawn Lewis

earned All-Big West first teampraise and finished as the sev-enth-leading scorer in Mustangprogram history with 1,265career points. Additionally, for-ward David Hanson was namedto the all-conference secondteam while guard Maliik Loveearned Big West Co-FreshmanPlayer of the Year praise.

Callero’s initial 2009-10 sea-son at Cal Poly yielded one ofthe top single-year turnaroundsin program history. In orchestrat-ing a five-win improvement overthe previous season, Calleroalso directed the Mustangs to a5-2 start in Big West play – theprogram’s best beginning to anyconference schedule at theDivision I level. Predicted to finishlast in the standings, Cal Polyeventually clinched the No. 6seed for the Big WestTournament and capped thecampaign by winning the pro-gram’s first conference tourna-ment game in three seasons – a73-69 opening-round triumphversus UC Irvine. Individually,guard Lorenzo Keeler becamethe first Mustang in three sea-

sons to earn All-Big West firstteam praise. Hanson earned all-conference honorable mentionconsideration while guard KyleOdister was selected to the BigWest All-Freshmen Team.

Named head coach of CalPoly on April 3, 2009, Calleroowns a penchant for revitalizingcollege basketball programs. Ashead coach at Seattle (2001-09),Callero guided the Redhawks to75 victories during his final fourseasons and successfully direct-ed the program through its tran-sition to the Division I level.Callero’s final 2008-09 seasonwith the Redhawks produced a21-8 campaign and the pro-gram’s highest winning percent-age in 45 seasons. Additionally,the 2008-09 Redhawks – as anindependent program – finishedNo. 131 out of 347 programs inthe final Sagarin Ratings.

Under Callero, Seattle fin-ished the 2006-07 season with a20-9 record, a Great NorthwestAthletic Conference title and theprogram’s first berth in the NCAADivision II Tournament in 38years. During just his second

season at Seattle, Callero direct-ed the Redhawks to a 16-11 fin-ish that was the program’s firstwinning campaign in nine sea-sons and a 10-victory improve-ment upon the previous year.

Prior to his tenure at Seattle,Callero guided Division IIIUniversity of Puget Sound to acombined 22-25 record duringthe 1999-00 and 2000-01 sea-sons. The Loggers finished 14-10 during his final season tosecure the program’s first win-ning campaign in nine years.

Before pointing the PugetSound program in a winningdirection, Callero served the1998-99 season as an assistantcoach at USC. During his oneseason, Callero assisted theTrojans to a National InvitationalTournament appearance.

A prominent figure on thenorthwest basketball scene formore than two decades, Callerocompiled a 130-49 mark duringtwo three-season stints atHighline Community College(1989-92, 1995-98) and, beforedeparting for USC, helped guidethe Thunderbirds to successive

Northwest Athletic Association ofCommunity Colleges champi-onships. Callero twice earnedconference Coach of the Yearpraise after Highline posted acombined 63-2 mark during the1996-97 and 1997-98 cam-paigns. Callero coached BrianScalabrine while at Highline andrecruited the current ChicagoBulls forward to USC.

Between his successful stintsat Highline, Callero served as thehead coach and as a guidancecounselor at Sumner HS (1992-95). Under Callero, Sumner alsoposted its first winning campaignin six years.

A 1986 graduate of CentralWashington with a bachelor’sdegree in psychology, Callerohelped guide the Wildcats toconsecutive NAIA NationalChampionship appearancesduring each of his two seasons.The point guard and captain ofCentral Washington’s 1985-86team received his master’sdegree in education from Seattlein 1991. Omar Lowery, Cal Poly’srecruiting coordinator, isin his third season as an

assistant with the Mustangmen’s basketball program.Lowery also plays an integralrole in strengthening Cal Poly’spost play and reboundingefforts, in addition to scouting ofopponents and game-daypreparation.

“Omar is one of the mostwell-respected and connectedrecruiters in Texas, Illinois,

Minnesota and Wisconsin,”Mustang head coach JoeCallero said. “His ability to iden-tify quality student-athletes hasopened new doors for the CalPoly basketball program.”

A Wisconsin native, Loweryarrived on the central coast fol-lowing three seasons at TexasState (2006-09) where hehelped recruit seven total play-ers ranked among the top-40Texas high school prospects.As a result of his recruitingefforts, Texas State increasedits win total each season withLowery on the bench.

In addition to assisting TexasState achieve success on the

court, Lowery was instrumentalin the program’s success in theclassroom, helping to mentor2009 Capital One/SouthlandConference all-academic selec-tions John Rybak (Milwaukeenative) and Ryan White(Houston).

Prior to his tenure with TexasState, Lowery was a graduateassistant coach at Division IIEastern New Mexico University(2004-06). During his tenure atEastern New Mexico, Loweryrecruited and coached 2005Lone Star ConferenceFreshman of the Year JoshJackson (6-1, guard, MadisonWest HS, Madison, Wisc.) and

2006 All-Lone Star secondteam selection Justin Redman-Trotter (6-3, guard, Marquette-Milwaukee HS). As well asserving as a physical educationfaculty member at the universi-ty, Lowery’s duties with theGreyhound program includedon-court coaching, recruitingand the scouting of opponents.

Lowery has also served as avarsity assistant coach at HaleHS (2001-02) in West Allis,Wisc., and at Milwaukee’sMarquette HS (2002-03).

As a collegiate player,Lowery competed for two sea-sons at South Plains College(Levelland, Texas) before trans-

ferring to Concordia University(Mequon, Wisc.) where heearned All-LakeshoreConference first team praise.Concordia made its first post-season appearance withLowery in the lineup, qualifyingfor the 2000 NCAA Division IIITournament.

Assistant coach MitchFreeman is in his thirdyear as a member of

head coach Joe Callero’sstaff. Freeman, who alsoserved a highly-successfulstint under Callero at SeattleUniversity (2005-09), is CalPoly’s lead scout in charge ofgame preparation anddefense.

Under Freeman’s guid-ance during the 2010-11campaign, Cal Poly – out of335 Division I programs –ranked third nationally inopponent three-point per-centage (28.7), sixth in oppo-

nent scoring average (58.9points per game) and 25th inopponent field goal defense(40.0 percent).

“Mitch is as hard workingand as competitive as anyassistant coach in collegebasketball,” Callero said. “Heearned a full-time position atCal Poly by showcasingrelentless work ethic and loy-alty during four years atSeattle. His international con-tacts as well as attention todetail in all areas make him akey part of our staff.”

During his four-year tenureat Seattle, Freeman helped

the Redhawks to 75 victoriesand the program to a suc-cessful transition to theDivision I level. DuringFreeman’s final 2008-09campaign, the Redhawksposted a 21-8 record thattranslated to the program’shighest single-season win-ning percentage in 45 sea-sons.

Freeman began his coach-ing career during the 2004-05season as the varsity boy’sassistant at Marysville-Pilchuck HS (Marysville,Wash.). During his one sea-son, Freeman helped the pro-

gram reach the Washingtonstate district playoffs. Hisoverall duties with the pro-gram included the improve-ment of guard play, coordinat-ing off-season conditioningsessions, scouting the oppo-sition and video editing.

A 2004 graduate ofWashington State with abachelor’s degree in kinesiol-ogy and an emphasis inhealth and fitness education,Freeman served as a studentassistant with the Cougarprogram (1999-04). UnderDick Bennett, Freemanassisted with video exchange

and other administrativeduties.

Freeman, who completedhis master’s degree in educa-tion administration fromGrand Canyon University in2008, spent three yearsteaching in both the Seattleand Marysville school dis-tricts.

Kirby arrived at Cal Polyfollowing a one-season stintat Cañada College (RedwoodCity, Calif.) where he wasinvolved in all aspects of on-court coaching, strength and

conditioning, recruiting andperimeter player developmentin helping the Colts to a 20-6overall record, a second-place finish in the CoastConference with an 8-4 markand a final No. 7 ranking in theCalifornia Community CollegeAthletic Association coachespoll. Kirby also spent two sea-sons as an assistant atShoreline Community College(2008-10) in Seattle.

As a Californianative, he has a strong knowl-edge of the state and coaches

A Sacramento native, Kirbyserved as a student assistantcoach at Seattle during the2007-08 campaign while com-pleting a bachelor’s degree inliberal studies with a minor inpsychology. An All-Bay ValleyConference selection at SanJoaquin Delta College (2003-05), Kirby helped theMustangs to a 30-2 record

during the 2004-05 seasonand a berth in the semifinalsof that year’s CCCAA statechampionships. A graduate ofSacramento’s Foothill HS,Kirby assisted the program tothe 2003 CaliforniaInterscholastic FederationDivision III state champi-onship and a 36-2 record.

Prior to arriving at Seattle forthe 2007-08 campaign, Reavesserved as a team manager withWashington State (2005-08)where he was the head manag-er during his final two seasons.With the Cougars, his duties

included organizing the recruit-ing database and coordinatingteam activities, as well as dailyoffice tasks. Reaves attendedand helped coordinate opera-tions for Washington State atthe 2007 and 2008 NCAATournaments. The Cougarsreached the Sweet Sixteen in2008.

Reaves received his bache-lor’s degree in sports manage-ment with a concentration inbusiness administration fromWashington State in 2007.
