149 – True freshman Damien Arredondo, third-place finisher inthe California state high school championship last March, will starthis college career at 149. The Buchanan High School (Clovis) grad-uate is a three-time state placewinner, placing sixth as a junior andfourth as a sophomore. He was 43-5 as a senior.

157 – A tossup between junior Travis Rasmussen and redshirtfreshman Travis Gallegos. Rasmussen did not wrestle last seasonbut compiled a 13-12 mark as a redshirt freshman two seasons ago, placing first in the Cuesta Invitational and fourth in the MissouriOpen. Gallegos competed in five open tournaments as a true fresh-man and compiled a 15-8 record at 157 pounds with two falls, threetechnical falls and a pair of major decisions. "This one is going tobe close and that is going to make each other better," said Buckley.

165 – One of two weight classes with compelling wrestle-offspending in the practice room. Vasquez is a junior who was 16-16 ayear ago and 6-5 in dual meets at 174 pounds. He is dropping to165 this year. Redshirt freshman Dominic Kastl competed in sixopen tournaments as a true freshman and compiled a 14-5 recordwith two falls and three major decisions, placing first in the CalBaptist Open and second in the California Collegiate Invitational."These guys have different styles. Kastl is technically sound andVasquez is really athletic. It's going to be an interesting matchupand I have real high expectations in this weight class."

174 – DesRoches "is really strong and powerful," said Buckley."He's also real coachable, just a sponge, and has an amazing atti-tude. He's good on his feet, counters well, clearly one of the bestguys in the country and real good on top." DesRoches is 83-31overall in his Mustang career, 23-8 in duals and has 32 career pins, one shy of the school record.

184 – Ian Daube, a Poway High School graduate, wrestled atOklahoma in the 2009-10 season and compiled a 9-5 record in opencompetition at 184 pounds. He attended Cal State Fullerton last sea-son, but did not wrestle in any matches. Daube, now a redshirt

sophomore, was a state champion at 189 in 2009 andcompiled a 135-13 career prep record.

197 – Smith "has a great attitude and, for a big guy, isreally explosive and athletic," said Buckley. "There is noreason he can't be an All-American with the other sen-iors. He hustles and works really hard on the mat." Smithis 47-35 in his Mustang career, including a 17-10 dualmeet mark.

285 – Another very competitive weight class withDisney to be challenged by redshirt freshman DrewMeulman. Disney was 12-12 a year ago after transferringfrom Minnesota and is a three-time Kansas state champi-on while Meulman competed in seven open tournamentsas a true freshmanlast year and com-piled a 16-9record. He placedfirst in the UtahValley Open, sec-ond in the MenloOpen, third in theCaliforniaCollegiateInvitational andfourth in theFullerton Open."For a big guy,Atticus has a lot of

athletic ability," said Buckley."He has to open up hisoffense and his success willdepend on how much hedecides to wrestle with move-ment. Meulman is technicallysound. We need to get both ofthem in the mindset of notwrestling as heavyweights. We want them to use theirathleticism, not their weight."

huck Liddell ranks as one of, if not the, most famous Cal Poly graduates in theschool’s history. For two years Chuck

“The Iceman” Liddell reigned as the UFC lightheavyweight champion, but before that, Liddellstarred in Mott Gym as a 190-pound wrestler.

Recently, Liddell released a book that chronicleshis life as a fighter. Iceman: My Fighting Lifedebuted on February 17, 2008, and spent multi-ple weeks on the New York Times Bestseller list.

Liddell started training for his career at the ageof 12 in Santa Barbara. He was a four-yearstarter on the football team at San Marcos High School, andbecame a Division I wrestler at Cal Poly in 1988. After spend-ing five years on the wrestling squad, Liddell would completehis degree while pursuing a career as a professional fighter, graduating in 1995 with a B.A.in business. As a graduation giftto himself, he had his iconic tattoo inked on his scalp whichreads “Koei-Kan” (“prosper with happiness.”) He would thentransition to mixed martial artist when he earned a purple beltin Brazilian jiu-jitsu under John Lewis, ultimately aiming for acareer that would take his fame and fortune to a new level.

Liddell made his UFC debut in 1998 with a decision victoryover Noe Hernandez. He soon established his reputation as adevastating striker with victories over Tito Ortiz, RenatoSobral and Wanderlei Silva over the next few years. On May26, 2004, he knocked out Randy Couture in two minutes to

win the Light Heavyweight Title. He defendedhis titles successfully five times, all ending witheither a knockout or a TKO. He surrendered hisbelt after losing in a matchup with Quinton“Rampage” Jackson, three years to the day ofbeing crowned champion.

Despite his busy schedule as a fighter and aworld-renowned celebrity, Liddell still takes timeto remember his roots as a Cal Poly Mustang.Liddell can often be seen matside at Cal Polymatches and is an avid fan of the team. He wasinducted into the Cal Poly Athletics Hall of Fameon Sept. 11, 2009.

With the exception of football (GreatWest Conference), wrestling and men’s swimming(Pac-10 Conference) and the women’s swimmingand indoor track and field programs (MountainPacific Sports Federation), Cal Poly is also in its16th year as a member of the Big West Conference.Among Big West institutions, only UC Davis (22 pro-grams) boasts more athletic disciplines than CalPoly.

Prior to transitioning to the Division I level, CalPoly ranked as the most successful institution in thehistory of NCAA Division II athletics with 35 nationalteam titles. Cal Poly has continued its winning tradi-tion at the top flight with teams and individuals rou-tinely earning conference championships and NCAATournament berths.

During the 2010-11 academic year, the athleticsdepartment saw both the men’s and women’s tennisprograms advance to the NCAA Championships.Individually, Jen Keddy (volleyball), Asa Jackson(football), Boris Novachkov (wrestling) and JasminePickett (track and field) each earned All-Americahonors. At the NCAA Championships, Novachkovfinished as runner-up at 141 pounds while Pickettfinished seventh in the triple jump. Peter Kline qual-ified for three events in NCAA swimming and diving, the men's tennis doubles team of Andre Dome andAlex Sonesson qualified for NCAA competition andGeoff Gonzalez became Cal Poly's first Division Inational qualifier in men's golf. Maliik Love (men'sbasketball), Chris Frias (men's cross country) andKristina Graven (volleyball) each earned Big WestFreshman Player of the Year honors, Rachel Clancywas named Big West Player of the Year in women'sbasketball and Marty Mohamed earned Great WestDefensive Player of the Year honors in football.

As testament to Cal Poly’s athletic and academicintegrity, 56 Mustangs were named to all-conferenceacademic teams during the 2010-11 school year. TheCal Poly Athletics Department also finished secondin the Big West Commissioner’s Cup, an award pre-sented to the institution with the best overall resultsin the conference’s 16 sponsored sports.

Cal Poly athletes have consistently excelled out-side the bounds of the collegiate arena. Cal Poly wasrepresented at the 2008 Summer Olympics by formerMustangs Sharon Day (United States, high jump),Jimmy Van Ostrand (Canada, baseball) andStephanie Brown Trafton, whose gold medal for theUnited States in the discus competition was the firstsuch feat by a Mustang athlete. Other prominentpost-Cal Poly examples include All-American widereceiver Ramses Barden (2005-08), who was a third-round selection by the New York Giants in 2009.Former linebacker Chris Gocong (2002-05) – one ofCal Poly’s three Buck Buchanan Award winners asthe Football Championship Subdivision’s top defen-sive player – made 35 starts in three active seasonswith the Philadelphia Eagles before signing with theCleveland Browns in 2010. As a member of PlymouthArgyle Football Club, former men’s soccer midfield-er Anton Peterlin is the only Big West player to haveappeared in an English Football League match. As ofAugust 2010, the Cal Poly baseball program had pro-duced three current Major League players while 22other Mustangs were active professionally.

MUSTANG HEAD COACHES

For more than 100 years, Cal Poly’sstudent-athletes have been dedicatedto excellence in both the athletic and

academic arenas. During the 2010-11scholastic year alone, 56 Mustangs werenamed to all-conference academic teams.Since Cal Poly transitioned to the Division Ilevel in 1994, the school has enjoyed 576total all-conference academic selections –an average of more than 34 per year.

Taking pride in each student’s ability toexcel both athletically and intellectually, CalPoly and the athletics department offerguidance and support to each student-ath-lete during his or her tenure. To supportthese motives, the athletics department ini-tiated the Academic Resource Center.

Opened in 2001, the center provides year-round academic support, tutoring, work-shops and academic advising. The centerhas also developed study hall programswith bi-quarterly progress checks, weeklyacademic appointments and a first-yearseminar class for incoming student-ath-letes.

In deference to the student-athlete’sneed for class schedule flexibility, Cal Polyalso offers in-season priority registration fortwo of the three quarters during which com-petition occurs.

Of the 64 major courses offered at CalPoly, Mustang student-athletes wereenrolled in 54 separate areas, as of the Fall2009 term.
