MOCS SUCCESSACADEMICALLY, ATHLETICALLY & SOCIALLY

Cross country’s Emmanuel Kirwa won his fourth conference race, third in the SoCon, and was the SoCon Runner of the Year for the third time.

The women’s golf team won its second-straight SoCon title and advanced to the NCAAs for the third year in a row.

The softball team won its fifth-straight SoCon Title and advanced to the finals of the NCAA Regionals for the first time.

Junior Stephan Jaeger was the SoCon Men’s Golfer of the Year for the second year in a row, leading the Mocs back to the NCAAs.

Sophomore Jenna Nurik won the SoCon Sportsmanship Award and was a second team all-conference selection.

The Mocs wrestlers have won seven-straight SoCon titles and are riding a 35-match winning streak in league action.

Sophomore Paula Passmore was the 2010 So-Con Volleyball Libero of the Year after leading the league with 5.45 digs per set.

Bailey Dewart returned from numerous inju-ries to earn the SoCon Ann Lashly Inspiration Award.

ATHLETICALLY Overthelastfiveyears,UTChaswon17reg-ularseasonand19 tournamentchampionshipsin theSouthernConference, farmore thananyotherschoolduring that time. Afterfinishing inthetop-100intheLearfieldSportsDirectors’Cupin2009,theMocshadtheirthird-bestshowingatNo.136in2011.HereisabrieflistofsomeofUTC’smajoraccomplishmentsin2010-11.

ACADEMICALLY TheMocs’ student-athletes continue tohavetremendous success in the classroom. Beloware justa fewof theAcademicaccoladesUTCreceivedlastyear:•Theoverallg.p.a.oftheMocs’student-athleteshasincreasedineachofthelastsixtrems,cul-minatingwithaschool-record2.97inthespring.• Over half of all UTC student-athletes earnedatleasta3.0grade-point-averageineachofthelastfoursemesters.•Eachmemberof theSoConChampionwom-en’sgolfteammadetheDean’sListinboththefallandspringsemesters.•Wrestlinghada3.14g.p.a.fortheyear,rankingNo.7inthenation.

SOCIALLY The Chattanooga Mocs Athletics Depart-ment is heavily involved in community eventsthroughout theyear. UTCstudent-athletesarewellrepresentedintheannualSusanG.KomenRacefortheCureandtheMocsarealwaysin-volvedwith localprojectssuchascanned fooddrives, theFreshmanMove-Inandotheractivi-tiesthroughoutChattanooga. The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee(SAAC)plansmanyoftheAthleticDepartment’scommunityevents. TheMocsalsohaveapres-enceatChattanooga’sSpecialOlympicseventseachyear.TheMocsalsohostmanyeventsthatengage the local community, suchas the2011SoConBasketballChampionships.

The Mocs graduated 53 student-athletes dur-ing at the summer, fall and spring commence-ment ceremonies in 2010-11.

Senior David Moore became the 12th Moc in school history to be named Capital One Aca-demic All-American.

Senior Courtney Barnes was three-time Academ-ic All-District and the recipient of the SoCon Bob McCloskey Insurance Graduate Scholarship.

Chris Berry earned a spot on the Capital One Academic All-District team and won the SoCon Outdoor 10000M race.

Sophomore Jackson Tresnan was an ITA Scholar Athlete and led the team with 14 sin-gles wins.

Men’s basketball senior Ricky Taylor talks to youth at a local clinic hosted by the Mocs men’s basketball team.

Wrestling senior Dan Waddell led his teammates in an outing to help the local Habitat for Human-ity.

The softball team adopted Amanda Swartout as an honorary teammate through the “Friends of Jaclyn Foundation.”

Nearly all of the Mocs teams work to organize or participate in the annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on the campus of UTC.

At thehelmof Chattanooga cross countryandtrackandfield,BillGautierhasestablishedhimself as one of the top coaches in the Southern Conference and perhaps the Southeast. In20years,Gautierhasledhismen’scrosscountry teams to four leaguetitles and sevenrunner up finishes. His 1998 men’s SoConChampionship team also captured the South Region crown and made school history asthe only UTC team to compete in the NCAA Championships. The Mocs were led by NicCrider, who became the first Chattanoogarunner toearnthreestraightSoCon individualtitles. Last season Emmanuel Kirwa becamethesecondwithhis thirdstraightSoConCrossCountrytitle. Thewomen’scrosscountryteamhasseensimilarsuccesswithseventitlesandfourrunnerup finishes. Former distance runner ShannonWommack is themostdecoratedChattanoogarunner inschoolhistory.She isafive-timeAll-American, four-time Southern ConferenceIndoorTrackPerformeroftheYear,three-timeSouthernConferenceCrossCountryRunnerofthe Year and the 2006 Southern ConferenceWomen’sAthleteoftheYear. ShebecameUTC’sfirstthree-timequalifierfor the NCAA Cross Country Championships,earning automatic qualifications at the NCAASouth Regional in 2002, 2004 and 2005.Wommackalsofinishedthirdinthe3,000metersteeplechase at the 2006 NCAA Outdoor Track andFieldChampionships,settinganewschoolrecord, while earning her second All-Americahonors in that event. In 2007, Gautier saw another one of hisrunners, Lanni Marchant, earn the program’ssecondstraightSouthernConferenceWomen’sAthleteoftheYearAward. Gautier’s first of two Indoor Coach of theYearhonors came in1998,whenhiswomen’steamclaimedthetitleandhissecondin2003,

when his women’s team amassed the mostpoints in school history for a third place team finish. Chattanoogahaswonnumerousindividualchampionships and top-athlete honors over the years. Steven Kocsis wrapped up hisjunior season with a third top athlete crownwinningtwodistanceeventsattheconferencechampionshipsandthenearninganat-largebidto compete in themen’s 5,000meters at theNCAAChampionships,alongwithWommack. In 2005, Wommack became the seventhChattanooga track and field athlete to beawardedtheA.C.“Scrappy”MooreAwardsince1992. This award is given to theUTC student-athlete who best personifies the athleticdepartment’s corevalues.Pasttrackandfieldwinners include Ian Mayne (2004), AmandaLynch (1999), Anna and Catherine Wright(1998), Mary Jane Middlekoop (1997) andMichaelKyle(1995). During his UTC career, Gautier has beennamed the Southern Conference Cross Country Coachof theYeara totalofninetimes.Thesehave included six times for women’s crosscountry(1997,1998,2001,2004,2006,2007),fourtimesformen’scrosscountry(1998,1999,2003,2004)andtwiceforindoortrackandfield(1998, 2003). He earned All-Region honors in1998,forhismen’scrosscountryteam. PriortohisarrivalatChattanooga,Gautierserved as the head cross country coach and assistant track coach at Southeast Missouri State. In his six seasons at SEMO, his men’sandwomen’s teamswon six conference titlesin cross country. His teams also placed in the topfiveattheNCAADivisionIIChampionshipsinboth trackandcross countryfiveoutof sixseasons. Gautierwasnamed theNationalCombineCoachof theYear in1990,andwas theNCAADivisionIICoachoftheYearforsixconsecutiveseasons. He has coached 17 NCAA Division IINationalChampionsand56All-Americans. Gautier earned his Bachelor of Science inPhysicalEducationandBusinessAdministrationfromWesternKentucky in 1983, and receivedhisMaster’sin1984.WhileatWKU,Gautierwasa standout distance runner for the nationally-recognized Hilltoppers. He and his wife, Jan,havetwodaughters,TaylorandSydney.

Roger Brown, Ph.D.Chancellor

D r . R o g e rG . B r o w n , aproven academicleader and nativeTennessean, is thefifteenth head ofThe University of

TennesseeatChattanooga.HisappointmentasChancellorwascelebratedbythecampusinFebruaryof2006. UnderBrown’s leadership, the campushas experienced record enrollment growthat all levels, and projections point to anenrollment ofmore than 10,000 studentsin 2009. Since taking the helm of theChattanooga campus, he has promotedUTC’smission as ametropolitan universitywithspecialemphasisinthefieldsofscience,mathematics, and technology. Brown haspledgedthecampus’commitmenttoteacherpreparation,healthcareprofessions,businessandcommerce,andculturalappreciation. UTC recently completed a strategicplanninginitiativethatfocusescampuseffortson the power of partnerships, especiallyrelationshipswithin the learning laboratoryofChattanooga. In 2008,UTChattanoogaearned the Community Engagementdesignationby theCarnegieFoundation fortheAdvancementofTeachinginrecognitionof itsmany successful partnerships in thecommunity. Brown came toChattanooga from theUniversity ofNorthCarolina at Pembroke,where he served as Provost and ViceChancellor forAcademicAffairssince2000.Previously, he had served since 1991in various academic and administrativecapacitieswiththeUniversityofNorthCarolinaatCharlotte.BrownleftUNCCharlottein2000asSeniorAssociateProvost andAssociate

ViceChancellorforAcademicAffairs. Apoliticalscientistwithparticularacademicemphasis inAmerican government, Brownearned bachelor’s andmaster’s degreesin Political Science from theUniversity ofTennesseeandthePh.D.inPoliticalSciencefromTheJohnsHopkinsUniversity.HebeganhisteachingcareeratIowaStateUniversityin1983beforejoiningtheUNCCharlottefacultyin1985. In2002,Brownwasappointedto the inaugural delegation of theAmericanAssociation of StateColleges and Universities Sino-AmericanLeadershipDevelopmentTraining for Higher EducationLeadersinChina.HehastraveledonassignmentfortheU.S.Departmentof State to Syria, Jordan, andIsrael. He also helped establishinternat ional exchanges withuniversities inGermany, France,SouthKorea,andSouthAfrica. In Chattanooga, Brown is amemberofRotaryInternationalandhasalsobeennamedtotheUnitedWayofGreaterChattanoogaBoardofDirectors,theRiverCityCompanyBoard, and theChattanoogaAreaChamber of CommerceBoard ofDirectors. He is a commissionerof the SouthernAssociation ofColleges and Schools and hasbeen appointed to theSoutheastTennessee PreK-16 EducationCouncil. Brown’s wife and partner,Dr. Carolyn Thompson, is alsoa committed community activist.In addition to her involvementand support of the university, she

currentlyservesontheboardsoftheCommunityFoundationofGreaterChattanooga,AlliedArtsofChattanooga,ChattanoogaSymphonyandOpera,WTCI,GoodShepherdChurchSchoolandCollegeAccess. When Rick HartcametotheUniversityof Tennessee atChattanooga, hebrought with him avision and plan for

the futureof theMocs. SincehishiringonMay23,2006,HarthaschangedthelandscapeoftheUTC Athletics Department with his leadership,organizationalskillsandinnovativeideasonhowto fulfill theMocs’mission of preparing studentsforproductiveandmeaningfullives.Enteringhisfourthseasonas theDirectorofAthletics,Hart’sefforts have made a tremendous impact on theMocs student-athletes’ quest for comprehensiveexcellence – academically, athletically andsocially.

Academically• Added staff to both the Compliance andAcademicServicesdepartmentstohelpstudent-athletes progress toward the ultimate goal ofearningacollegedegree.• Placed at least 90 student-athletes on theAthleticDirector’shonorrolleachsemester.• Showncontinuous improvement in theoverallgrade-point-averages for student-athletes -highlightedbya2.77g.p.a.inthespringof2009,the highest semester mark for the Mocs sinceHart’sarrival.• DevelopedandimplementedanambitiousAPRimprovementplanthatisworkingtoincreasetheAPRscoresofallMocsathleticsprograms.

Athletically• Captured11regularseasonand14tournamentchampionships in theSouthernConferenceoverthe last three seasons, more than any otherSoConschoolduringthattime.• In 2008-09, Chattanooga posted schoolrecordswith five teams competing in theNCAAChampionshipsand10squadsrepresentedinthepostseason.• Set a school record with a 99th place finishin the NACDA Learfield Director’s Cup thatmeasures the overall success of all Division Iathletic programs. Three of theMocs’ top-5 alltimefinishes in theNACDADirector’sCuphavecomeinHart’stenure.• Captured UTC’s first Germann Cup in 2007-08, signifying the best all-around women’ssportsprogramintheSouthernConference;andfinished second in both the Germann Cup andCommissioner’sCupstandingsin2008-09.• 12student-athletesselectedasSoConAthletesoftheYearwhiletwoMocshavebeennamedtheSoConFemaleAthletesoftheYear.Socially• Encouraged Chattanooga student-athletesin their involvement with many local communityprojects and charity work and has personallyservedasamemberof theChattanoogaRotary,theGrandMarshalofthe2007Region4Special

Olympicsandisasought-afterspeakeramongthearea’smanycivicorganizations.• Cultivated and maintained relationships withlocalandnationalpressthathasledtounequalledmediaattentionforaprogramofthissize.• Duringthemen’sbasketballNCAATournamentrun in 2009, the NBC’s “Late Show with JimmyFallon” adopted the Mocs as its team of thetournament.Theweek-longexposurebrought inanestimated$500,000ofadvertisingandnationalexposureforUTC.• Expandededucational programming (diversity,gambling prevention, etc.) for student-athletes,coaches and staff as part of a commitmentto learning and personal and professionaldevelopment.• Focused attention on strengthening therelationshipbetweenMocsAthleticsandtheUTCcampuscommunity.

Hart has also been very successful in thetraditional rolesasUTCAthleticsDirector. Inanefforttoensureefficientandeffectivemanagementof all elements of the athletics program, and tobetter align athletics with the academic missionof the institution, Hart developed and installedtheStrategic Plan forUTCAthletics.A focus onthe student-athlete experience has resulted inincreasedticketsalesandfundraising,innovativepartnerships, improvedathletics facilitiesandtheadditionofqualitycoaches.

Revenue Generation/Fundraising/Attendance• Signedanexclusive,long-termmarketingrightsdealwithLearfieldSportsthatguaranteesrecordrevenues from advertising and marketing withUTCAthletics.• Restructured theMocsClubwith two full-timestaff, resulting in nearly a 20% increase in thenumberofindividualsdonatingoverthelastyear.• SecuredthreemajorgiftsfromUTCbenefactorsthattotalednearly$2millioninthepastyear.• Excluding these three major gifts, the MocsClubcappedthe$1millionmarkforthefirsttimein2008-09.• Implemented a donor program for footballseasonticketsales.• Overall ticket revenues have increased nearly35%sinceHart’sfirstyear.• Women’sbasketballledtheSoConinattendancein 2008-09 after increasing their season ticketsalesby40%overthepreviousyear.• Men’s basketball was second in averageattendanceintheSoConin2008-09.• Attendance at softball games nearly doubledfrom2008to2009.

Coaches• IgnitedfanseverywherewiththehiringofRussHuesman,aformerMocletterwinner,inDecember2008 to “Restore the Glory” to ChattanoogaFootball.• Hired Chris Bono in 2006 to take over thewrestling program. Bono guided UTC to three-straightSoContitles.• Orchestrated Jeff Clark’s return to the headcoachingpositionofthewomen’stennisprogramin2007.

Managingfiniteresourcesincollegiateathleticsiswidelyknownasadifficulttask.Hartmadefiscalstewardshipapriorityforthedepartmentsincehisarrival.Withdiligentleadershipandacommitmentfromeachandeverymemberofthedepartment,UTCAthleticshasmadesignificantstridestowardsreducing the financial burden on the institution–includingabalancedbudgettwoofthelastthreeyears. Hartarrivedon theUTCcampusafterservingseven years at the University of Oklahoma invariousathleticsadministrativecapacities.Hart’scareer with the Sooners began in 1999 as theDirectorofMarketingandLicensing.HebecameAssistant Athletics Director for Marketing andLicensingin2001,anddevelopedandimplementedmarketing campaigns which generated annualticket revenues in excess of $19.5million. Hartwas promoted toAssociateAthleticsDirector forProgramAdvancementandBrandingin2003andSeniorAssociateAthleticsDirectorin2006. Hart has also worked in athletics for theUniversity of North Carolina and East CarolinaUniversityandhasservedwith theU.S.OlympicCommittee.A1994graduateofUNC,Hartearnedabachelor’sdegreeinPhysicalEducation,HealthandSportScience.Hartandhiswife,Allison,alsoagraduateofNorthCarolina,haveason,Trevor,10,andadaughter,Caroline,7. AviewofMoccasinBendfrom Point Park located on Lookout Mountain. The openfieldatthebottomof the Moccasin Bend peninsulaisthelocationof the Mocs race course. Thelandformwasgiventhename“MoccasinBend”becauseofitsresemblancetoafootandtoreflecttheNativeAmericanheritageof the Tennessee Valley.

TheMocsatthestarttheannualFrontRunnerInvitationalruninOctoberattheMoccasinBendRaceCourse.

TheLadyMocsracealongtheMoccasinBendcourseattheannualPowerAdeInvitationalruninSeptember.

The Moccasin Bend race course is located at the end of the historic MoccasinBendArcheologicalDistrict.TheMoccasin Bend Archaeological Districtis an archeological site in Tennesseethat is included in the Chickamauga andChattanoogaNationalMilitaryPark. The 956-acre area was designateda National Historic Landmark in 1986. Itis located directly across the Tennessee River from Lookout Mountain, siteof an American Civil War battle. Thearcheologicaldistrict issignificantduetoits archaeological resources of AmericanIndiansettlement. The site played host to the 2006 Southern Conference Championships that saw the UTC women edge AppalachianStatebyonepoint for its seventhSoContitle in 10 years. UTC’s Lanni Marchantwonthewomen’sindividualtitleandwasnamedtheSoConRunneroftheYear. TheRunningMocshaveusedthesiteastheirhomecourserunningtheannualPowerAdeandFrontRunnerInvitationalseach year.

The Southern Conference, whichbeganits91stseasonofintercollegiatecompetitionin2011,isanationalleaderinemphasizingthedevelopmentofthestudent-athlete and in helping to buildlifelongleadersandrolemodels. The Southern Conference is thenation’s fifth-oldest NCAA Division Icollegiate athletic association. Onlythe Big Ten (1896), the MissouriValley (1907), the Pacific 10 (1915)and the Southwestern Athletic (1920)conferences are older in terms oforigination. Academic excellence has been amajorpartoftheSouthernConference’stradition. Hundreds of SouthernConferencestudent-athleteshavebeenrecognized on ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDAAcademicAll-Americaandall-district teams. A total of 19RhodesScholarshipwinnershavebeen selected from conferenceinstitutions. The Conference currentlyconsists of 12 members in fivestates throughout the Southeastand sponsors 19 varsity sportsand championships that produceparticipants for NCAA Division IChampionships. The Southern Conferenceoffices are located in the historicBeaumontMillinSpartanburg,S.C.Atextilemill thatwasinoperationfrom 1880 until 1999, BeaumontMill was renovated in 2004 andtodayoffers the league first classmeetingareasandofficesaswellasaspaciouslibraryforstorageoftheconference’shistoricaldocuments.

Membership History On Feb. 25, 1921, representativesfrom14oftheSouthernIntercollegiateAthletic Association’s (SIAA) 30members met at Atlanta’s PiedmontHotel to establish the SouthernIntercollegiate Conference. On handat the inauguralmeetingwereofficialsfrom Alabama, Alabama PolytechnicInstitute (Auburn), Clemson, Georgia,GeorgiaSchoolofTechnology(GeorgiaTech),Kentucky,Maryland,MississippiA&M(MississippiState),NorthCarolina,North Carolina State, Tennessee,Virginia, Virginia Polytechnic Institute(VirginiaTech)andWashington&Lee. Dr. S.V. Sanford of Georgia waschosen as acting chairman and N.W.Dougherty of Tennessee was namedsecretary.Thedecision to formanewathletic conference was motivated bythedesire tohaveaworkablenumberof conference games for each leaguemember. Playbeganinthefallof1921andayear later,sixmoreschools joined thefledglingleagueincludingTulane(whichhad attended the inaugural meetingbut had elected not to join), Florida,LSU, Mississippi, South Carolina andVanderbilt. VMI joined in 1925 andDukewasaddedin1929.

By the 1930s, membership in theSouthern Conference had reached 23schools. C.P. “Sally” Miles of VirginiaTech, president of the SouthernConference, called the annual leaguemeeting to order on Dec. 9, 1932 atthe Farragut Hotel in Knoxville, Tenn.Georgia’s Dr. Sanford announcedthat 13 institutions west and southof the Appalachian Mountains werereorganizing as the SoutheasternConference. Members of the newleague included Alabama, AlabamaPolytechnic Institute, Florida, Georgia,Georgia School of Technology,Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi,Mississippi A&M, University of theSouth, Tennessee, Tulane andVanderbilt.

TheSouthernConferencecontinuedwith membership of 10 institutionsincluding Clemson, Duke, Maryland,North Carolina, North Carolina State,South Carolina, Virginia, VMI, VirginiaTechandWashington&Lee. Thesecondmajorshiftoccurredsome20 years later. By 1952, theSouthernConference included 17 colleges anduniversities. Another split occurredwhensevenschoolsincludingClemson,Duke,Maryland,NorthCarolina,NorthCarolina State, South Carolina andWake Forest departed to form theAtlanticCoastConferencewhichbeganplay in 1953.The revampedSouthernConference included members TheCitadel, Davidson, Furman, GeorgeWashington, Richmond, VMI, VirginiaTech,Washington&Lee,WestVirginiaandWilliam&Mary. Today, the league continues tothrivewithamembershipthatincludes12 institutions and a footprint thatspans five states: Tennessee, NorthCarolina, South Carolina, AlabamaandGeorgia.Currentleaguemembersare Appalachian State, Chattanooga,College of Charleston, The Citadel,Davidson, Elon, Furman, GeorgiaSouthern,UNCGreensboro, Samford,WesternCarolinaandWofford.

Coaches and Administrators The Southern Conference has alsobeen a breeding ground for some ofcollege athletics’ most recognizedcoachesandadministrators. Legendary basketball coachesAdolphRupp of Kentucky andEverettCase of North Carolina State bothworked the sidelines in the SouthernConference. Rupp guided theWildcats to a 30-5 mark during the1931 and 1932 seasons. Yet, for allhis coaching accomplishments, Ruppnever led Kentucky to a SouthernConference tournamentchampionship.Case mentored the Wolfpack to sixconsecutive Southern ConferenceTournament championships from 1947through1952.

Lefty Driesell coachedDavidson to three SouthernConference Tournamentchampionships in 1966, 1968and 1969. Driesell also won theleague’sCoachof theYearawardfour straight times from 1963through 1966. Former GeorgiaTechcoachBobbyCreminsearnedleague Coach of theYear honorsthree times in the late ’70s andearly ’80s while at AppalachianStateandisnowtheheadcoachattheCollegeofCharleston. Terry Holland saw hisbasketball coaching career takeoff atDavidsonwhenhe returnedtohisalmamaterin1970.Hollandwas honored as the SouthernConferenceCoachof theYear forthree consecutive seasons from

1970-72 and led the Wildcats to theconference tournament title and anappearanceintheNCAATournamentin1970.J.DallasShirley,amemberoftheBasketballHallofFame,spent21yearsas the assistant to the commissionerand supervisor of officials in theSouthern Conference. He also servedas president of the InternationalAssociation Basketball Officials andthe United States Olympic BasketballCommittee. The legendary Paul “Bear” Bryantgot his coaching start in the SouthernConferenceasheguidedtheMarylandTerrapins in 1945. Another famousSouthernConference football coach isthelateFrankHowardofClemson,whoguidedtheTigersasaleaguememberfrom 1940-52. The incomparableHoward won 69 Southern Conferencegames. TheSouthernConferencehasbeenrepresented on the sidelines at fiveSuper Bowls in recent years. BobbyRoss, who piloted the San DiegoChargerstothe1996SuperBowl,wasthe head coach at The Citadel from1973-77. Former Buffalo Bills headcoach Marv Levy directed William &Maryfrom1964-68.HewassucceededatWilliam&MarybyLouHoltz.William& Mary competed in the SouthernConferencefrom1936-77.
