2011-12 OUTLOOK

32011-12 WRESTLING

The Davidson wrestling team will have adifferent look this season with 11 freshmenjoining seven returners, but the Wildcats arejust as hungry for success as they open the2011-12 season Saturday at the Rat RumbleOpen hosted by VMI.

“I feel great, great things are coming in thepresent and I know they are going to come inthe future,” said head coach Bob Patnesky. “It’sjust a matter of time before we see more guyson top of that podium like Alex Radsky.”

With the departure of Southern Conferencepodium finishers Alex and Vitaly Radsky andheavyweight mainstay Charlie Wolff, theWildcats have some big holes to fill. Patnesky, beginning his eighth season at the helm and his10th season with the Davidson wrestling pro-gram, and assistant coach Michael Childs willlook for continued improvement from thereturners and for their talented newcomers tostep in early.

“We just have to be excited for where weare at as we have some talented freshmen, butyou just don’t know in a year like this whatcould happen,” said Patnesky. “It’s a matter ofhow fast they turn the corner, how fast theymature and how fast they understand the con-cept of college versus high school wrestling. It’sa whole different level of competition, but itcould be something special. We’ll just try to bepositive and keep encouraging them to moveforward.”

Senior captain Tyler Mullen, the lone senioron the team, will look to lead the squad andearn a Southern Conference Championship at165 pounds after his injuries marred hischances in 2011.

“I am extremely excited on the year and tosee what happens,” said Patnesky. “Our mainobjectives are to stay positive, win or lose, andto keep getting better each and every week.”

125 poundsJunior Matt Zarth will look to hold on to his

starting spot with freshman Philip Elias chal-lenging him for time on the mat. Zarth com-piled a career best 15-19 record and placedfourth at the Southern ConferenceChampionships last season.

“We do expect Matt to have a break outyear,” said Patnesky. “He is bigger, which isgood in his weight class, and hopefully he canput it together and have a great run at the endof the year. We are looking for him to step upand be a leader and take care of business.”

Elias was a 2011 Pennsylvania

Interscholastic Athletic Association state tour-nament place winner and Southwest Regionalthird-place winner wrestling at Shady SideAcademy in Pittsburgh, Pa. He also qualifiedfor the state tournament in 2010 and was theSouthwest Regional Champion.

133 poundsWith the departure of Alex Radsky, a fresh-

man will step into the void of the 2010Southern Conference Champion and NCAATournament participant. Anthony Elias, thetwin brother of Philip, will battle BenHartshorn for the starting nod. Elias won back-to-back Allegheny County championships as ajunior and senior wrestling at Shady SideAcademy, and qualified for the state tourna-ment as a senior. Hartshorn was a four-time all-county, all-league and Pennsylvania AAASoutheastern Regional Qualifier at ConestogaHigh School in Stafford, Pa. He was also a 2011state qualifier and two-time sectional champi-on.

141 poundsFreshman Kevin Birmingham will look to

replace last year’s team MVP, Vitaly Radsky.Birmingham placed seventh in the New Jerseystate tournament wrestling for Timber CreekHigh School in Slickerville, N.J.

“In wrestle-offs, Kevin was super impres-sive,” said Patnesky. “He’s exciting and cancatch you from anywhere.”

149 poundsJunior Scott Ray plans to stay at 149 for the

season, a weight he went 9-11 at in 2011 andcompeted in the conference tournament at.

“He is a lot bigger than he was last yearand I think it’s going to be a great move forhim,” said Patnesky. “He just needs to keep agood head. He is an extremely hard workerand has a lot of talent. We will just have to seewhat happens in the conference.”

157 poundsInjuries kept CT Talevi off the mat as a

freshman, but he’ll look to make a big impactfor the ‘Cats this season. A Roanoke, Va. native,Talevi was a two-time top-five state tourna-ment finisher Cave Spring High School.

“CT is really excited to come back andwrestle this year,” said Patnesky. “He is goingto go 157 for us and he’s been workingextremely hard to get into shape.”

165 poundsTyler Mullen had put together a career-best

season as a junior with a 15-11 record, but aninjury abbreviated it before the conferencetournament. In his senior season, Mullen willbe counted on to score points on the mat andbe a leader off of it with the ‘Cats’ youthfulteam.

“Tyler has all the talent in the world to winthe conference,” said Patnesky. “It’s just a mat-ter of what happens, and the Saturday the con-ference tournament is held, anything can hap-pen. It’s a tough weight but he has a good shotat winning if he puts it all together at the righttime.”

Junior Chris Cirenza will move down aweight class from last season and compete withMullen for the slot at 165 pounds.

“Chris has made a total commitment towrestling and it’s great,” said Patnesky. “He’sgoing to battle Tyler Mullen for the starting

spot. As far as his character and how far he hasgrown since he has been a freshman, it is justincredible.”

174 poundsAfter wrestling at 184 and 197 pounds as a

sophomore, Ike Crews is moving down to 174pounds for his junior season.

“Ike might not be down there for a fewweeks but he just works hard,” said Patnesky.“He tries to get better each and every day andyou can see significant improvement in himand he just needs to continue that. One advan-tage Ike has is that he is just very strong. Weneed to take advantage of that.”

Freshman Ian Solcz will look to challengeCrews for the starting nod. Solcz was a fourth-place finisher in the New York StateChampionship at Pittsford Mendon HighSchool in Pittsford, N.Y.

184 poundsSophomore Scott Patrick was named to the

SoCon All-Freshman team after going 8-10 withfour pins at 174 pounds, but will move up to184 pounds for the 2011-12 season. Patrickwent 2-1 in three bouts at the weight last sea-son.

“I think 184 will be a very comfortableweight for Scott,” said Patnesky. “He’s definite-ly got a chance to make conference finals. Withthe talent that he has, it is on him to determinewhat he wants to do. We are going to push himas much as we can, but in the end, he is the onethat’s going to really push himself to the top.”

197 poundsFreshman Eddie Isola will occupy a weight

class the ‘Cats struggled to fill last season. Isolawas a state runner-up as a senior at BishopMoore Catholic High School in Maitland, Fla.

“Ed is a true student of the sport and hewants to achieve great things in collegiatewrestling,” said Patnesky. “He is coming alongand will do well at 197.”

HeavyweightFreshman Jordan Ownbey will start at

heavyweight, replacing longtime starterCharlie Wolff. Ownbey placed fourth in theNorth Carolina state tournament wrestling atEnka High School in Candler, N.C.

“Jordan has a very solid wrestling back-ground and we’re excited to see his progres-sion,” said Patnesky.

Charles W. Parker '38Several areas in the Baker Sports Complex on the Davidson Campus are testimonyto the impact Charlie Parker had on wrestling at Davidson College. The Charles W.Parker Wrestling Room and the Wildcats' dressing room were both given in hishonor by former Davidson wrestlers. Except for a five-year break with the U.S.Army Air Corp in World War II, Parker spent four decades as the Wildcats'wrestling coach. One of the highlights of his career was in 1963 when he coachedthe U.S. wrestling team in the Pan-American games in Brazil. He served in severalnational amateur wrestling associations, including the U.S. Olympic WrestlingCommittee (1959-1960) and the National AAU Committee. Parker edited theNCAA Wrestling Guide and was secretary-treasurer of the Carolina WrestlingOfficials Association. He was a certified international wrestling official and a char-ter member of the National Athletic Trainers Association. Parker was inducted into

Davidson’s Hall of Fame in 1991-92

Lowell L. Bryan '68Inducted in the HOF Class of 1994-95, Bryan was a Southern Conference wrestlingchampion for Davidson in 1967. He also played football and baseball for theWildcats. In 1991 he received the James P. Bryan isa partner with McKinsey and Co., a New York financial consulting firm whichadvises top managers of companies on strategy and the impact of economic andcredit changes in their industry.

Harold A. Westervelt '59Inducted in 1997-98, Harold A. Westervelt is the only wrestler in Davidson historyto win three consecutive Southern Conference championships. In 1957 and 1958, hewon the conference title at 157 pounds. In 1959, Westervelt moved up to the 177pound class and won again. In 2006, he was named to the Southern Conference's75th Anniversary team - the only Davidson wrestler selected for that honor.Westervelt was also a three year letterman in football for the Wildcats from 1956through 1958, the last time Davidson posted three consecutive winning seasons.

Kerry Keith '69Keith was a two-sport standout, as a fullback on the football team and a star on thewrestling squad. Twice he led the Wildcats in rushing, first with 719 yards on 155carries (4.6 avg.) in 1967, then with 377 yards on 121 yards in 1968. On November 10, 1917, a small cohort of 22 footballplayers traveled to Atlanta to represent Davidson Collegeagainst Auburn, one of the most formidable teams in theSouth. The Plainsmen had massacred their first fouropponents, outscoring teams, 141-6.

According to one account, they were “big, quick, andundefeated” and heavily favored in the day’s matchup.Davidson was 2-4 and started a line averaging 20 poundsless.

Not surprisingly, Auburn dominated the game, out-gaining the “Red and Black” 240 yards to Davidson’s 91yards. Astoundingly, Davidson pulled together an offen-sive attack through the efforts of running back A.R.“Buck” Flowers and quarterback Henry Spann, deliveringa “bewildering array of forward passes.”

Davidson defeated one of the most powerful teams in

the South that day, 21-7, with scrappiness that cap-tured the awe and respect of Atlanta sportswriters. They wrote of the “Wildcats” from Davidson College, whose small stature and ferocious style proved over-whelming. One account notes that Morgan Blake ofthe Atlanta Journal remarked of the Davidson team,“No other team ever put together in these UnitedStates of the same weight as Coach Fetzer’s teamcould ever get the verdict over the flock of wild menfrom North Carolina.”

The Davidsonian picked up on the nickname, and ithas been used ever since, replacing former, milder ref-erences such as “Red and Black,” “Presbyterians” and“Preachers.”
