Team Duhawk

Hello From TEAM DUHAWK!

We are embarking on a new academic and athletic year at Loras College. As Denise Udelhofen and I begin our second year of our administration of Duhawk Athletics, our goals remain the same. We want to teach our student-athletes to be great citizens and people through their involvement in athletics. We, also, always strive to compete at the highest level in the Iowa Conference and in the NCAA. While our season and year are new, our goals remain the same.

Denise and I have worked extremely hard to rebrand what was once called the Duhawk Club. The Duhawk Club worked to financially benefit the entire department. In reorganizing this booster club, our discussions revolved around how we could move forward by garnering more support for our student-athletes and, at the same time, provide more benefits for our members. The true greatness of Loras College revolves around the people who make up this proud institution both past and present. We want to take advantage of these Duhawk relationships for our members. Our goal is to be more accessible, visible and provide more opportunity for members to celebrate and connect to Loras College Athletics. Denise, our coaching staff and I will be on the road to see and celebrate the Duhawks with our members. Consequently, we hope more alumni and friends of Loras College participate in this new program. We also hope that TEAM DUHAWK serves its members at a more beneficial level.

Please consider becoming a member of TEAM DUHAWK! Serve the Duhawks, Support the Duhawks and Socialize with the Duhawks!

As Always…GO Duhawks!

IIAC Conference

Founded in 1923 and recognized as one of the top NCAA III leagues in the nation, the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference consists of nine private, liberal arts institutions.

The IIAC sponsors 15 intercollegiate championships in men’s and women’s sports. The IIAC has proven to be one of the nation’s most dominant conferences, annually having many of its teams finish highly at the NCAA III national level.

IIAC MISSIOn STATEMEnTThe Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) consists of independent, regionally accredited, residential four-year, liberal arts colleges that share common academic philosophies and goals and that place primary emphasis on the academic progress of students. To that end the athletic programs of IIAC member institutions facilitate the intellectual, spiritual and physical development of all students, whether as participants or spectators.

Members of the IIAC place highest priority on the overall quality of the educational experience of our student-athletes and their successful completion of it. Therefore, the member colleges seek to provide an environment in which athletic activities are conducted as an integral part of our student-athletes’ educational experience. In that vein, intercollegiate competition is provided by the IIAC to develop participants’ skills in self-discipline, teamwork, fair play, sportsmanship and ethical conduct; it is not provided primarily to serve the entertainment needs of spectators nor the talent needs of professional sports teams.

Student-athletes in the IIAC should experience growth of physical and mental skills as well as an appreciation for the rewards of adequate preparation and superior performance. They also should learn to work and play with others who are unlike themselves but who are talented and productive persons. They also should experience the pride of representing an organization, not just themselves, and the responsibility of proper conduct that comes with it. But primarily, they should have the opportunity to excel in their academic work as well as in their athletic endeavors; competitive events and practice sessions will be scheduled to minimize the potential conflict between academic and athletic excellence. In sum, athletic competition in the IIAC serves to encourage our students to participate in activities beyond the classroom, to enhance skills helpful to career success, and to assist them in their general development as human beings.

Head CoachBob Schultz

Head Track & Field/Cross Country CoachBob Schultz returned to Loras in 2005 to serve as the head men’s and women’s cross country and track and field coach. Schultz was previously an assistant at Loras from 1991-1994, and earned his master’s degree in physical education/athletic administration from the college in 1994.

Coach Schultz recently completed his seventh season as the Duhawks’ cross country coach. The men’s team won the IIAC Championship this fall for which Schultz was named the Iowa Conference Coach of the Year. The Duhawks went on to qualify for the National Championship where they finished 25th in the country. During the season, the men won the Wartburg Invitational and were the top DIII finisher at the National Catholic Championships hosted by the University of Notre Dame. The women’s team finished third in the IIAC behind two top 25 teams and finished 9th in the Central Region, arguably the top region in the nation. Individually, Genna Kinley qualified for the National Championship and went on to run 22:28, the second fastest time in program history. In track & field, the Loras women finished the 2012 indoor season second in the Iowa Conference, while the Duhawk men finished third. Loras sent a number of athletes to the National Championships in 2011 and senior Laura Rieger earned All-American for the indoor 800 with a new school record time of 2:12.52. Schultz has received a wide array of accomplishments during his time at Loras, including the IIAC and NCAA Central Region Coach of the Year for 2007 in men’s indoor track and field. He led the men to the IIAC indoor championship in 2007 and the IIAC outdoor championship in 2005, including two top ten NCAA Indoor & Outdoor finishes at the Men’s Championships. Schultz also led the women to a 5th place finish in 2007 at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. Loras Track & Field has had a combined 59 All Americans in men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field at Loras, including three NCAA Division III Champions under Schultz. Loras is Schultz’s third different head coaching stop. He comes to Dubuque from Lewis University in the suburbs of Chicago. Schultz spent three years coaching at Lewis, where he held the same position he holds at Loras. Combined between both teams, Schultz guided the Flyers to four Great Lakes Valley Conference titles in track and field and two in cross country. Schultz has also previously served as the Head Coach at Elmhurst College, an NCAA Division III school in his hometown of Elmhurst, Illinois. He headed the cross country programs for eight years (1994-2001) and the track and field programs for six seasons.

Schultz graduated from Lewis University in 1991 after a successful career as an athlete. He ran in high school for nationally known York High School in Elmhurst, Ill. He, and his wife, Jennifer, are the proud parents of two sons, Joey and Justin. They reside in Dubuque.

Scholar AthleteAbby Erion named

duane Schroeder IIAC Female Scholar Athlete of the Year

In May of 2007, Abby Erion was helping the Duhawks to a fifth place finish at the NCAA meet just days after graduating maxima cum laude (3.966 GPA) with a degree in Sports Science and a Mathemathics minor. Her performace at the IIAC meet in April earned her MVP honors. Monday, December 10, 2007, it was announced she won the Duane Schroeder IIAC Female Scholar Athlete of the Year award.

Erion’s athletic resume is impressive. She was captain of the team her junior and senior years. She qualified for the national meet eleven times in four different events (including the heptathlon). She won six IIAC titles and performed at the All-IIAC level 22 times.

Academically, Erion, a native of Decorah, Iowa, was a true student-athlete and tremendous in the classroom. She was on the Dean’s List in each semester at Loras, President and four-year member of Loras’ Delta Epsilon Sigma chapter- a nationally recognized Honors Society, and was also a four-year member of the Health Sciences Club.

“In my fifteen years of coaching, she is one of the finest people I have had the privelage to work with and is a coach’s dream,” head coach Bob Schultz said of Abby. “Another reflection of her tremendous character is that she was voted to be a captain twice by her teammates...she did an outstanding job of leading our team to successful seasons.”

Abby is the first Loras College student-athlete, male or female, to win the award in its seven year history.

The Duane Schroeder IIAC Female Scholar Athlete of the Year Award was first presented in December 2001 for the 2000-2001 academic year. To be eligible for nomination, a student-athlete shall have graduated or exhausted their eligibility during the academic year for which the award is given. She must have demonstrated a high level of accomplishment and achievement in a varsity sport, have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 (4.0 scale), and show evidence of scholarly achievements, community service involvement and leadership.

The Duane Schroeder IIAC Scholar Athlete of the Year Awards are named in honor of the late Duane Schroeder, former sports information director at Wartburg College. Schroeder served as Wartburg’s SID for 43 years until his retirement in 2000. During much of his 43 years, Schroeder served as the IIAC’s secretary and treasurer.

Welcome to Loras College!Dear Duhawk Fans,

Welcome to Loras College Athletic Department and the Loras College 2011-2012 Track and Field/Cross Country Media Guide. The entire Loras community is thrilled that you are experiencing Loras College and “Duhawk Nation.” We hope that you are able to visit Dubuque, Iowa, so you can experience our historic, beautiful and state-of-the-art facilities firsthand.Pleasealwaysknowthatwhetheryouvisitforthefirsttimeorareabletoseeusregularly, youare welcomed by our athletic department, faculty and staff and most importantly our student body.

The Loras College Athletic Department is constantly striving to extend the classroom for all of our student-athletes. Teachable moments occur for our coaches and student-athletes literally hundreds of times a day at practice and games. Traits like strength of character, sportsmanship, a solid work ethic and teamwork are taught and reinforced to produce Loras College alumni who will serve the world with integrity!

As members of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, another department goal is to compete at the highest level in all athletic venues. Our coaches are recruiting not only young men and women of character, but also athletically gifted and talented young people. It is my belief that you will see well-rounded student-athletes who demonstrate both integrity and athletic prowess as Duhawks.

In the end, we hope you, like thousands before you, enjoy and choose Loras College. When you make that choice, you will truly experience the tradition and engaging personalities that make us all Duhawks.

Thanks for your time and as always…Go Duhawks!
