Coaching Staff

BARBARA JAHN Head Coach37th YearUC Santa Barbara ’73

Jahn is now in her fourth decade at the helm of the UC Davis women’s swimming program, having guided the team from AIAW Division III through the ranks of NCAA Division II to Division I status. Entering her 37th year, she owns the unusual distinction of earning Coach of the Year honors in four different conferences. She captured that award numerous times in the Division II Northern California Athletic Confer-ence, won it again in the team’s final year of the multi-divisional Pacific Collegiate Swimming Conference (2003), then garnered similar honors in the last season of the Big West Conference (2010). Most recently, she earned the inaugural award at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championship in 2011.

Since the university completed its transition to NCAA Division I, Jahn has guided the Aggies to new levels of success. In 2008-09, the women’s team earned a second-place at the Big West Championships, with Heidi Kucera capturing Athlete of the Year accolades. Kucera, in turn, became the first female swimmer of the D-I era to automatically qualify for the NCAA Championships, where she competed in three individual events.

A year later, just the third official year of D-I competition, Jahn led the 2009-10 UC Davis women’s swimming program to its first ever Big West Conference championship. Under Jahn’s guidance, the Aggie women won six titles at the conference championship en route to a program-best 864 points.

Then in 2010-11, Jahn mentored UC Davis to eight individual MPSF titles and the team championship. Linda Hermann was selected as Ath-lete of the Year while Liliana Alvarez – who later competed at the NCAA Championship – was named Freshman of the Year.

During her tenure at UC Davis, Jahn has coached a multitude of All-Americans, including two student-athletes – Anna Pettis and Kristi Wheeler – selected as part of the NCAA Division II swimming team of the decade for the 1980s. Her student-athletes have been widely recognized on the university level as well. Kobayashi won the campus’s Hubert Heit-man Award for a second time in 2005, becoming the fourth Barbara Jahn protegé to capture the honor as outstanding female athlete of the year. Additionally, three of her swimmers have won the W.P. Lindley Award as the university’s top scholar-athlete of the year.

On the vaunted rosters of the Cal Aggie Athletics Hall of Fame, no fewer than four of her student-athletes are listed: Anna Pettis Scott (1991), Kristi Wheeler-Hussain (1993), Jamie McClellan (1999) and Mary E. Fiedler-Althof (2001).

Jahn is a respected member of the faculty at UC Davis, teaching a number of aquatics courses in the exercise biology program.

A 1973 graduate of UC Santa Barbara, Jahn was also a diver for the Gauchos. She received her degree from UCSB in cultural anthropology with minors in ergonomics and coaching.

Jahn earned her master’s degree in kinesiology from UCLA in 1975. She and her husband, Tom, reside in El Macero.

PETER MOTEKAITIS Associate Head Coach17th Year overall2nd Year with womenUC Davis ’83

Motekaitis enters his 17th overall season at UC Davis and his second as assistant coach with the women’s swimming program.

As head coach of the UC Davis men’s swimming program for his first 15 years, Motekaitis guided the Aggies into conference and national prominence at his alma mater, culminating with a Big West Conference Championship during the 2010 season. Under his leadership, the Ag-gies won the conference title with a record 985.5 points, the most ever in a five-team field and set two schools records and hit 12 NCAA “B” Consideration times. He was named Men’s Coach of the Year for the second straight season.

Under his tutelage, Scott Weltz, who finished his Aggie career as one of the most decorated swimmers in UC Davis history, became the first UC Davis student-athlete in its Division I history to earn All-American honors after finishing 15th in the 200 individual medley at the 2009 NCAA Division I Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships. The 2006 Big West Conference Freshman of the Year was named Male Athlete of the Year in back-to-back seasons in 2009 and 2010.

Prior to beginning Big West Conference competition, Motekaitis guided the Aggies to the team title in their final year as a member of the Pacific Collegiate Swimming Conference in 2004. UC Davis claimed six individual titles and three relay championships at the meet.

In Motekaitis’ career, his student-athletes have captured the uni-versity’s Colby E. “Babe” Slater Award, given to the outstanding male athlete of the year, three times and twice won the W.P. Lindley Award as the top scholar-athlete. In 2005, one of his prized pupils, 1998 national champion Tadeshi Kaneko, was inducted into the Cal Aggie Athletics Hall of Fame. Two years later, Motekaitis protegés Pat Foster and Tea Austin earned their respective nods into the Hall of Fame.

Motekaitis also served as head coach for the Davis Senior High School swimming program until 2007-08. Under his guidance, Blue Devil teams have earned 23 straight league titles and an astounding 19 Sac-Joaquin Section championships.

In addition to his guidance of UC Davis student-athletes, Motekaitis also coached former UC Berkeley standout Haley Cope during 2003-04. In the year following her training under the Aggies’ mentor, Cope won three medals (including two gold) at the FINA World Championships, one national championship, multiple World Cup gold medals and a silver medal at the Olympic Games in Athens.

A 1983 graduate of UC Davis with a bachelor’s degree in history, Motekaitis was also an All-American swimmer for the Aggies throughout his college career. He set individual school records in three events as well as two relay marks. As an educator, he earned a master’s degree in sports management & fitness from the University of San Francisco in 1997.

Motekaitis’ wife, former NCAA champion Koren Pollock, coached swimming and water polo at nearby Sacramento City College. He has four children: Ty, Samantha, Mia and Elle.

RICK HENDERSON Administrative Assistant14th YearSacramento State ’80

Henderson enters his 14th year with the Aggie swimming program, serving as administrative assistant for the women’s team. Like Motekaitis, Henderson is no stranger to the local swimming scene – he is now in his fourth decade of coaching in Northern California.

Henderson first joined the Aggies in 1983 as the interim head coach for the UC Davis women’s program. During that lone season at the helm, Henderson guided the Aggies to a fourth-place NCAA finish, was selected Coach of the Year in the conference, and boasted an unprecedented four individual national champions. Among his protegés are Cal Aggie Athletic Hall of Fame enshrinees Anna Pettis Scott and Jamie McClellan.

Henderson recently retired from his position as senior coach for the Woodland Swim Team. In his 13 years in Woodland, he garnered three Sierra Nevada Swimming Coach of the Year honors and guided numer-ous members of the national junior team.

Henderson graduated from Sacramento State in 1980 with a degree in social science.

PHIL TONNE Head Diving Coach8th YearSan Diego State ’79

After a successful 20-year run as the head diving coach at UC Berkeley, Phil Tonne brought his expertise up Interstate 80 to the Aggie program. He enters his eighth year at UC Davis in 2011-12.

Tonne’s ever-growing stable of divers has made substantial contribu-tions to the Aggies’ team success at the Big West Conference, culminating with Jennifer Meyer’s 1-meter title and Jason Andrade’s 3-meter champi-onship at the 2010 edition of the conference meet - both program firsts.

Under Tonne’s guidance, UC Davis diving has steadily improved as the program has moved through the ranks of Division I. The women’s squad scored 139 points at the 2007 league meet, led by Kristyn Chal-dekas’ second-place finishes on both boards, while Jamie Flynn was the 3-meter runner up in 2008.

Tonne’s student-athletes have also left their marks on the UC Davis records as every Aggie diving record has been set by Tonne’s students on both the men’s and women’s side.

In 20 years with the Golden Bears, Tonne’s finest hour came in 1991, when he guided Melissa Graviss to a seventh-place finish on the 3-meter board. She was Cal’s first-ever women’s diver to qualify for the NCAA Championship. Graviss qualified for the national meet on both springboards in 1992 as well.

In 2004, Tonne protegé Louie Gagnet reached the national meet on the tower and both springboards. In his career, Tonne has coached two Pac-10 men’s finalist and one conference champion on the women’s side. Additionally, every Golden Bear diving record was set during his tenure.

In addition to his collegiate guidance, Tonne also served as head coach for the Diablo Divers in Walnut Creek, Calif. During that time, he oversaw the careers of 23 North Coast Section champions, one age-group national champion, 11 Junior Olympic participants and six senior national competitors. Also under Tonne’s guidance: his Aggie predecessor Karla Helder, who has captured numerous national and world master’s national titles in recent years.

Tonne was a two-time JC All-American diver at Chabot College before continuing his career at San Diego State. He was twice named MVP for the Aztecs. Tonne graduated from SDSU in 1979 with a degree in physical education.

Aggie Coaching HistoryUC Davis women’s swimming and diving dates back to 1949, op-erating under the auspices of the Women’s Athletic Association and its advisor, Dr. Marya Welch. In the 1950s, the Picnic Day aquacade was among the campus’s most popular sports activities. After the passage of Title IX, swimming was among the first varsity sport offerings for women. Debbie Meyer, who won three gold medals at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, was brought in as head coach before Barbara Jahn took the reins in 1975.

BUFFY AJIMURA Free/Fly • Sr.Discovery Bay, Calif.Liberty HS ’08

2010-11: Finished season with season-best times in five events at Allington Memorial meet: 50 free (24.29), 100 free (52.46), 200 free (1:52.24), 500 free (5:05.96), 100 fly (59.19)... Also anchored 400 free and 400 medley relays at that meet... Earned MPSF All-Academic honors.

2009-10: Swam in four events at the Big West Conference Cham-pionships... Advanced to consolation finals in the 100, 200 and 500 freestyle... Finished 11th overall in the 200 freestyle with a season-high time of 1:54.39 and 12th in the 100 freestyle (53.32)... Clocked in at 53.08 in the 100 free prelims which was a season-best... Placed 15th in the 500 freestyle with a season-best time of 5:12.53... Swam anchor leg of 400 medley relay “B” team at conference championships... Also swam 100 and 200 butterfly in various dual meets... Swam third leg on winning 400 freestyle relay in dual against Pacific Jan. 16.

2008-09: Competed in five individual events at the Big West Cham-pionships... Advanced to consolation finals in the 100, 200 and 500 freestyle... Won 500 freestyle consolation final in a season-high time of 5:01.76 to place ninth overall... 500 freestyle time ranks 6th on the Aggies’ all-time list... Placed 13th in the 200 freestyle (1:53.57) and 16th in the 100 freestyle (53.81)... Swam third leg on 200 freestyle and 200 medley relay “B” teams at conference championships... Won 500 freestyle and swam second leg of winning 200 freestyle relay in dual vs. Cal State Bakersfield (1/31)... Swam third leg on winning 400 freestyle relay in dual at Pacific (1/24).

LIBERTY HS ’08: Swam the leadoff leg on All-American 200 and 400 free relay teams... Helped 400 free relay to 3rd-place finish (3:33.49) at North Coast Section, while 200 free relay took 4th at 1:38.03... Also finished 5th in 50 free (24.61), 10th in 100 (53.65) while helping re-lays to final heats at NCS meet as a sophomore... California Scholarship Federation... Also swam for Crow Canyon Sharks (San Ramon, Calif.).

PERSONAL: Born in Livermore, Calif.... Majoring in political sci-ence... Parents are Allen & Ann Ajimura... Favorite facility at which she has competed is Texas’ Jamail Swimming Center (site of American Short Course Championships).

ALYSSA BRITT Breast/Fly • Sr.Tracy, Calif.Tracy HS ’08

2010-11: Reached consolation final in each breaststroke event at MSPF Championships, placing 10th in 100 (1:03.87) and 12th in 200 (2:19.39)... Both times are season bests, while 200 breast mark ranks 5th in school history... Also hit season bests of 2:09.23 in 200 IM, 4:35.63 in 400 IM at conference.

2009-10: Advanced to finals in 400 IM and 100 and 200 breast at Big West Championships... Finished 7th overall in the 100 breast (1:05.05), eighth in 400 IM (4:35.16) and 200 breast (2:21.08)... Prelim time of 1:04.64 in 100 breast ranks 7th in UC Davis record book...Prelim time of 4:34.44 in the 400 IM is 10th fastest all-time... Swam third leg of 200 medley “B” relay and second leg of 400 medley “B” relay.

2008-09: Finished 8th in 200 breast (2:24.39) at Big West Confer-ence Championships... Hit PR of 2:22.97 in prelim, 5th in Aggie record book... Also made consolation finals in 200 IM (16th, 2:09.97 prelim) and 100 breast (10th, 1:05.61)... Mark in 100 breast is 6th all-time at UC Davis... Named Most Improved.

TRACY HS ’08: Starred in swimming and water polo... Named team MVP in swimming, competing in fly, breast and IM... Qualified for Sac-Joaquin Section meet in 100 fly and 100 breast as a senior... Part of school record-setting 200 medley and 200 free relays in 2006... Also a team MVP in water polo, leading team in goals and assists... Member of Ripon Aquatics for six years.

PERSONAL: Born in Tracy, Calif.... Majoring in exercise biology... Parents are Keith & Cindy Britt... Keith played basketball at Gonzaga... Considering careers in physical therapy/sports medicine, or as an el-ementary school teacher... Lists her older sister Alexis as her hero, who also swims and plays water polo, as well as her younger sister Allie who inspires her every day.

Moved into 3rd all-time at UC Davis in 400 IM... Also placed 15th (2:06.35) in 200 fly at MPSF meet... Hit 2:06.04 in MPSF prelim heat, 10th in school history...Named MPSF All-Academic.

2009-10: Made finals of 100 fly (57.05), 200 butterfly (2:04.25) and 200 IM (2:04.93) at Big West Championships... Finished 6th in both butterfly events and 9th in the 200 IM... Posted season-best 56.74 in 100 fly prelim... Marks in both 200 IM and 200 fly ranked 3rd in school history... Swam third leg of 200 free “B” relay at conference champion-ships... 2008-09: Accounted for 29.0 points at Big West Conference Champi-onships... Advanced to finals in both IM events, plus consols in 200 fly... Finished 7th in 400 IM (4:28.65 prelim), 8th in 200 IM (2:05.88 prelim), 11th in 200 fly (2:08.00), posting season-best times in each... Also went 57.62 in 100 fly as exhibition swimmer, 7th in Aggie history... Ranks 3rd on school’s all-time top 10 lists in each IM event, plus 10th in 200 fly.

SAN MARIN HS ’08: Four-year qualifier for North Coast Section meet, earning finishes of 12th and 13th place in 200 IM during final two seasons... Captured Marin County Athletic League title in that event as a senior... Also advanced to sections in 100 fly, placing 16th... Four-year letterwinner in water polo, garnering All-MCAL honors in 2007... Two-time team MVP in each aquatic sport... 2010-11: FIVE-TIME MPSF CHAMPION, capturing titles in 50 free (22.58) and 100 free (49.59), plus shares of titles in 400 medley relay (3:39.48), 400 free relay (3:20.66), 800 free relay (7:15.42)... Added runner-up finishes in 100 fly (54.39) and 200 medley relay (1:41.07)... Set school 50 free record of 22.74 in MPSF prelim, then broke it by another 0.16 in final... Split of 1:48.01 to open 800 free relay ranks 2nd in school history... Also moved into 2nd all-time in 100 fly, while sharing Aggie records in each relay at conference.

2009-10: BIG WEST CONFERENCE CHAMPION in 100 free (49.45), 800 free relay (7:17.96), 400 medley relay (3:42.52)... Set school record and hit NCAA ‘B’ standards in 100 free, long relay set meet and conference records, while medley relay made ‘B’ cut... Finished 2nd in 50 free (23.05), 3rd in 100 fly (54.64) and 2nd in 400 free relay (3:21.24)... Set another UC Davis record and hit ‘B’ standards in that relay.

2008-09: BIG WEST CHAMPION as anchor of 800 free relay (school-record 7:20.23)... Also member of 200 free relay (1:33.29). 400 free relay (3:24.11) and 400 medley relay (3:45.15), each of which finished 2nd and set additional school records... Scored 43.0 individual points in three freestyle events at conference... Clocked in at school-record 50.15 to place 3rd in 100 free... Added 5th place in 50 free (23.25), 6th in 100 free (1:51.59).

AMADOR VALLEY HS ’08: Won East Bay Athletic League and made North Coast Section finals in both 50 and 100 free as a juinor and senior... Earned NISCA and USA Swimming Scholastic All-American honors in each... Made final swims in 200 and 400 free relay, finishing 3rd in the latter as a senior... Finished 3rd in the 50 and 100 free at the NCS meet as a junior... Swam for Pleasanton Seahawks from 2006-08, qualifying for 2007 U.S. Open in both sprint free events.

2010-11: Earned second swims in two events at MPSF Champion-ships, placing 12th in 100 fly (56.84), 13th in 200 free (1:52.39)... Swam season-best 1:52.38 in 200 free prelim to advance... Also com-peted as part of 200 free relay (1:33.81) plus 500 free (5:00.63) and 200 back (2:06.44) at conference... Hit season bests in 50 free (24.39) and 200 IM (2:09.28) at Arena Invite.

2009-10: BIG WEST CHAMPION as part of 800 free relay (7:17.96), setting meet and conference records... Finished 7th in 100 fly (57.03) and 200 back (2:05.81) at Big West Championships... Also made consols in 200 IM, placing 15th at 2:06.51; and swam as member of 2nd-place 200 free relay (1:34.03).

2008-09: BIG WEST CONFERENCE CHAMPION as part of 800 free relay (7:20.23)... Also placed 8th in both 200 free (1:52.07) and 200 back (2:04.63), while adding 13th in 200 IM (2:06.62).... LODI HS ’08: Helped lead team to four consecutive San Joaquin Athletic Association titles... Four-year Sac-Joaquin Section individual qualifier... Won swim-off to advance in 50 free (25.14) at section meet as a senior... Set school record in 100 fly... Also lettered four years in water polo, earning co-MVP honors in 2007... Member of Lodi City Swim Club for 13 years, setting numerous team records.

2010-11: Posted season-best 3-meter score of 185.625 in Seattle/LMU double dual... Lone 1-meter dual total of 171.08 vs. Cal State Bakersfield... Scored 164.05 on high board, 155.95 on low board in MPSF prelims.

2009-10: Set season-best score of 188.33 on 1-meter board in dual against Pacific Jan. 16... Score of 198.83 on 3-meter board in dual meet against UC Santa Barbara Jan. 29 was also a season-best.

2008-09: Placed 9th on both boards at Big West Conference Cham-pionships, tallying 18.0 team points... Posted 169.40 on 3-meter board, 167.40 on 1-meter... Schaal Aquatics Center

On April 21, 1998, former Aggie swimmer Rand Schaal and his father, Ted, made a $1.4 million donation to the university, $1 million of which was earmarked toward the construction of a new aquatics facility.

That contribution, at the time the largest in the history of the intercollegiate athletics department, helped spur the 1999 Facili-ties And Campus Enhancement Initiative, which funded the re-mainder of the aquatics center as well as other campus venues.

The complex features an all-deep 65-meter by 25-yard pool with a depth ranging from seven feet to 14 feet (for diving pur-poses), men’s and women’s locker rooms, four team rooms, train-ing facilities, office space and a fixed-seating capacity for approxi-mately 500.

The Schaal Aquatics Center opened its doors during the 2003-04 season, serving UC Davis men’s and women’s swimming and diving, and the Aggie men’s and women’s water polo programs. In its short lifetime, it has already hosted several championship events, including both the men’s and women’s WWPA Champion-ships in 2004-05 and the 2005 USWP Men’s National Champion-ships.

In May of 2006, Schaal Aquatics Center served as the host for the eight-team National Collegiate Women’s Water Polo Champi-onships (shown above). The event marked the first time an NCAA final was held on the UC Davis campus since the Division II men’s gymnastics championships took place at Recreation Hall.

THIS IS

ACADEMICSUC Davis comprises three colleges (Agricultural

& Environmental Sciences, Engineering, Letters & Science), five professional schools (Education, Law, Management, Medicine, Veterinary Medicine) plus the Division of Biological Sciences.

With 103 undergraduate majors and 80 graduate programs, the university offers the most expansive and diverse range of academics among any of the University of California campuses. Additionally, students also have the opportunity to combine majors or customize their field of study by creating an individual major.

For those interested in graduate degrees – whether it be a master’s degree or a doctorate – UC Davis offers advising services to help students craft their education toward those goals. An estimated 86 percent of UC Davis students applying to graduate schools earn acceptance to either their first or second choices.

COMMUNITYWith a population of approximately 60 thousand,

Davis is widely known for being a safe, active and so-cially innovative community.

The downtown area boasts a multitude of specialty shops, restaurants, theaters and art galleries; while the city’s numerous parks offer recreational opportunities for active students.

ACTIVITIESOn campus, UC Davis students can rally around

the highly successful athletics department by joining the Aggie Pack spirit organization, or enjoy a first-class performance at the Robert & Magrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts.

The university also offers hundreds of student clubs and organizations, including cultural clubs, frater-nities and sororities, faith-based organizations and the Associated Students of UC Davis student government.

For the active Aggie, students may participate in the diverse intramural sports program or join one of the 30-plus sports clubs. In 2004, the Activities & Recreation Center (ARC) opened its doors, providing the campus with its own state-of-the-art fitness venue.

In April, UC Davis hosts Picnic Day, an annual student-run open house. The popular event showcases all that the campus has to offer, attracting students, staff, faculty, parents, alumni and members of the sur-rounding communities.

GETTING AROUNDNestled just southwest of Sacramento, the city

of Davis rests just 15 minutes from an international airport, and contains a downtown station serviced by Greyhound and Amtrak. Centrally located in the Sac-ramento Valley, the town sits equally close to both the finest ski resorts and the Pacific Ocean’s top beaches.

CAMPUS LEADERSHIP

Linda Katehi became the sixth chancellor of the Uni-versity of California, Davis, on August 17, 2009. As chief executive officer, she oversees all aspects of the university’s teaching, research and public service mission.

Chancellor Katehi (kah-TAY-hee) also holds UC Davis faculty appointments in electrical and computer engineering and in women and gender studies. A member of the National Academy of Engineering, she chairs the President’s Com-mittee for the National Medal of Science and is chair of the Secretary of Commerce’s committee for the National Medal of Technology and Innovation. She is a fellow and board member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science and a member of many other national boards and committees.

Previously, Chancellor Katehi served as provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs at the University of Il-linois at Urbana-Champaign; the John A. Edwardson Dean of Engineering and professor of electrical and computer engineering at Purdue University; and associate dean for academic affairs and graduate education in the College of Engineering and professor of electrical engineering and

computer science at the University of Michigan. Since her early years as a faculty member, Chancellor

Katehi has focused on expanding research opportunities for undergraduates and improving the education and profes-sional experience of graduate students, with an emphasis on underrepresented groups. She has mentored more than 70 postdoctoral fellows, doctoral and master’s students in electrical and computer engineering. Twenty-one of the 42 doctoral students who graduated under her supervision have become faculty members in research universities in the United States and abroad.

Her work in electronic circuit design has led to numer-ous national and international awards both as a technical leader and educator, 16 U.S. patents, and an additional six U.S. patent applications. She is the author or co-author of 10 book chapters and about 600 refereed publications in journals and symposia proceedings.

She earned her bachelor’s degree in electrical engineer-ing from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece, in 1977, and her master’s and doctoral degrees in electrical engineering from UCLA in 1981 and 1984, respectively.

LINDA KATEHI UC Davis Chancellor

Fred Wood assumed the role of Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs on August 1, 2007. Dr. Wood oversees pro-grams and services that enhance the academic and personal development of students, including intercollegiate athletics. He also provides administrative leadership to a Division of over 50 student support programs and to a team of over 800 staff members. In addition, he manages a budget of over 30 million dollars. He advises the Chancellor on mat-ters relating to students, enrollment, access, retention, and campus climate.

Wood earned his bachelor’s and Ph.D. from UC Davis in Chemistry in 1980 and 1984. Soon after graduating, he began his faculty appointment in Chemistry and also served the College of Letters and Science as the Associate Dean, a position he held for 13 years. Most recently he served as the Associate Vice Provost of Undergraduate Studies and Interim Vice Provost of Undergraduate Studies. He is a 2003 graduate of the Harvard University Executive Leadership and Management Institute, and also a graduate of the University of California Management Institute.

Dr. Wood is a member of several professional organiza-tions including American College Personnel Association, National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, and the National Association of College and University Busi-

ness Officers. He also serves on the Council of Deans and Vice Chancellors at UC Davis, as well as over twenty different committees and councils on and off campus.

Several priorities he is focusing on in Student Affairs include building bridges within Student Affairs and with academic affairs; increasing the diversity of our student population by reaching out to students who are disadvan-taged and underrepresented; recruitment and admissions; increasing the number of students transferring to UC Davis from community colleges and helping with their transition; develop an inclusive community for all of our students; work to help new students effectively navigate the university; im-prove retention and graduation; improve accountability and transparency; improve student health; increase fundraising efforts to help support our units and their needs; maintaining affordability for students to attend college; and keeping up with the latest technology to provide our staff, faculty and students with the most up to date and accurate information.

Dr. Wood continues to teach undergraduate students while serving in his administrative role and maintaining a focus on continually improving the services available to undergraduate and graduate students.

NONA RICHARDSON Interim Director of Athletics

Nona Richardson was named Senior Associate Athletics Director at UC Davis in March 2007. She brings extensive experience to her role at UC Davis which includes overseeing compliance, student services and sports medicine programs, as well as sport supervision.

Richardson has experienced intercollegiate athletics from a variety of roles, most recently during her tenure at Ball State, where she served as the senior woman administra-tor. There she oversaw daily operations for sports medicine, and strength and conditioning while also supervising seven sports, including women’s basketball and women’s volleyball.Her contributions at Ball State also included student-athlete services, community outreach programming, career develop-ment education, student-athlete awards, and other related ar-eas while also serving as a Title IX and gender equity resource.

Prior to Ball State, Richardson was Associate Director of Athletics and SWA at Valparaiso University for seven years, where she served in similar capacities while also serving as Compliance Coordinator for the 18-sport athletics program. Her duties also involved student-athlete eligibility, event management and other key administrative responsibilities.

Richardson has served on numerous committees throughout her distinguished career, including the NCAA Division I Volleyball Committee (2000-02) and Volleyball

Officials Sub-Committee (2001-02). She has also been a member of committees for the Mid-Continent Conference and the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators (NACWAA), the latter for which she also served as a board member.

Richardson has presented at several national confer-ences, is a member of NACWAA and the National Association of Girls and Women in Sports, and has won several awards including NACWAA’s Dr. Nell Jackson Award (2000).

Her athletics administrative tenure was preceded by a volleyball coaching career that was highlighted by head coaching positions at Eastern Michigan (1987-95) and Val-paraiso (1996-99) and an assistant coaching assignment at Kentucky (1984-87). Richardson was also an assistant coach at the U.S. Olympic Sports Festival in 1991.

Richardson was a standout volleyball player at Michigan State (1978-81) where she was a team co-captain, MVP and a member of the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) All-State team.

She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Physi-cal Education from Michigan State in 1983 and her Master of Arts and Liberal Studies in Human Behavior and Society from Valparaiso University in 1999.

Recognized in 1999 as “Softball Field of the Year” by the Sports Turf Managers Association, La Rue Field hosted five NCAA West Region Softball Champion-ships in the past decade. Recent additions include bat-ting cages, covered dugouts and improved press areas.

The former Lower Hickey Gym, the first home of women’s athletics in the post-Title IX era, was con-verted to a first-class practice facility for the Aggie gymnastics team in 2005.

The Ted & Rand Schaal Aquatics Center hosted its first event in January of 2004. The complex features an Olympic-sized pool, locker rooms,

team rooms, office space and permanent seating for approximately 500 spectators. The aquatics center will allow UC Davis to host champion-

ship events, including the 2006 NCAA Women’s Water Polo Championships.

The palatial Activites & Recreation Center (ARC) offers a wide array of fitness areas, including full-size basketball courts, a multi-use activity center

for indoor soccer or hockey, a running/jogging track, weight rooms, aerobics facilities, squash

and racquetball courts, and a rock-climbing wall. Additional amenities include a wellness center,

student lounges and opportunities for conferences and special events.

The Pavilion, formerly known as Recreation Hall, serves as home court for UC Davis basketball, volleyball, wrestling and gymnastics, as well as con-certs and special events. With a seating capacity of nearly 8,000, the Pavilion ranks as one of the largest on-campus arenas in Northern California.

Dobbins boasts one of the finest playing

surfaces in Northern California. In 2002, the stadium was enhanced to include a press box,

a renovated entrance and permanent conces-sion/restroom facilities.

DOBBINS BASEBALL COMPLEX

Both Aggie Stadium (left), the home of soc-cer, and the James & Ann Dobbins Baseball Complex (below) were the result of volunteer efforts dating back to the mid-1980s.

UC Davis student-athletes welcomed the expanded weight room, located inside Toomey Field. In addi-tion to nearly tripling in size the previous facility, the upgrade also included all new equipment, restrooms and office space.

Built in the late 1940s, Toomey Field has hosted numer-ous championship events for football, track & field and lacrosse. During the 2000 Olympic Trials, standouts Marion Jones and Michael Johnson used the Woody Wil-son Track as a practice facility.

Aggie Stadium serves as the home facility for the football, women’s lacrosse and women’s field hockey teams. The multi-use venue features an all-weather Sportexe playing surface, a first-class press box, full locker rooms, restrooms and conces-sions. The initial design has seating for 11,000 to 15,000 spectators, with an eventual build-out to as many as 30,000.

Dedicated in April 2005, the Marya Welch Tennis Center represents an expansion of the former Hickey Tennis Courts. Recent additions include grandstands and canopied benches for the north courts.

UC Davis ranks among the leaders in NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Awards and Academic All-District/America honorees, and has claimed a record three winners of the NCAA Woman of the Year Award. Student-Athlete Academic Services deserves much of the credit for these accomplishments.

The office started in 1988 with a single staff member serving as a centralized resource for academic advising, eligiblity information and campus referrals. The office has since expanded to include additional academic advisors, an athletic aid coordinator, an as-sistant eligibility coordinator and an administrative assistant. It is headed by Nona Richardson, senior as-sociate director of athletics.

The Student-Athlete Academic Services office provides a range of services to student-athletes on all 26 intercollegiate athletics teams, including assistance with course and major selection as well as interpretation and clarification of eligibility rules and issues.

UC Davis student-athletes typically have a mini-mum of three academic advisors: an athletic academic advisor assigned by sport, a college advisor, and a major advisor (if the student has a declared major). Although appointments with the athletic academic advisors are not mandatory at UC Davis, student-athletes might choose to see their athletic academic advisor for issues including:

• General education (GE) requirements• Dropping/adding courses• Time management/study skills• Assistance completing the mandatory Academic Plan Form• Study hall for student-athletes• Personal issues that affect academic performance• Choosing a major/career• Declaring or changing a major• Exploration of opportunities beyond athletics• Preparation for graduate programs• Preparation and application for NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships

Known collectively as “The Healer of Champions”, the UC Davis athletic training staff comprises five full-time certified athletic trainers, a full-time physical therapist/certified athletic trainer and approximately 24 student athletic trainers. Together, they are responsible for providing medical care to the 800-plus student-athletes that compose UC Davis’ 26 varsity teams.

The student athletic trainers serve two to three years with the program, logging in more than 1,500

hours and gaining valuable clinical education in a hands-on environment. The internship is ideal for any student interested in a graduate program in ath-letic training, as well as any medical or allied medical profession.

The ARC Pavilion training room contains exten-sive resources and equipment for the rehabilitation of injured athletes. The staff physical therapist is head-quartered there as well.
