La majesté des grandes demeures Aux XVIIIe et XIXe siècles, pour construire leurs demeures selon la mode en vigueur dans la capitale, les patriciens audomarois prennent pour modèle le pavillon des officiers de la caserne de la Barre, de type Vauban 1 et le palais épiscopal, élevés à la demande de Louis XIV. Les façades classiques transforment les grandes artères au profil médiéval et flamand 2 qui relient les places de marchés à l’ancien port et aux quais.

Dans les rues du centre, se manifeste l’avènement d’un classicisme tout en distinction et en mesure qui reflète le charme discret de ses propriétaires. L’ancien hôpital général également construit à la demande de Louis XIV 3 ou les façades des rues Allent et de Wissocq 4 en sont l’affirmation. Rue Carnot 5 , l’imposant hôtel Sandelin se dresse entre cour et jardin. Actuel musée de la ville, à la façade en pierre de taille et au décor subtil, il renferme de riches collections d’art religieux et de faïence.

Rue Saint-Bertin 6 , donnant sur l’enclos Saint-Denis, la façade de l’hôtel de Berghes (20 rue Saint-Bertin) exprime une grande sobriété mais son décor intérieur permet d’appréhender la vie de la société du XVIIIe siècle.

Dans le quartier des collèges 7 voué à l’éducation depuis quatre siècles, ces demeures s’insèrent entre les grandes constructions religieuses. Avec son pignon à pas de moineau, l’ancien séminaire épiscopal rappelle l’appartenance de la ville à l’espace flamand. La façade baroque à cinq niveaux de la chapelle du collège des Jésuites wallons domine le quartier. A deux pas, la bibliothèque d’agglomération comporte un remarquable fonds patrimonial. L’ancien collège des Jésuites anglais où sont venus étudier les membres de la famille Carroll figurant parmi les Pères fondateurs des Etats-Unis, a été bâti dans la tradition classique. Plus récent, le collège Saint-Bertin s’inspire du néogothique victorien aux accents très britanniques.

De Bibliotheek van de agglomeratie Een opvallende erfgoedcollectie: 2000 manuscripten, 25000 historische werken en 238 wiegedrukken waaronder een exemplaar van de 42-regelige Bijbel van Gutenberg. Méér informatie over de Bibliotheek op pag 3 van de Praktische informatie te vinden.

In de 18de en 19de eeuw liet de aristocratie hun huizen bouwen volgens de in Parijs gangbare mode. Zij namen hiervoor het officierspaviljoen van de Barre-kazerne dat in Vauban-stijl is 1 en het bisschoppelijke paleis dat naar de wens van Lodewijk XIV was gebouwd als voorbeeld. Door de klassieke gevels veranderde het middeleeuwse en Vlaamse aangezicht 2 van de grote straten tussen de marktpleinen en de vroegere haven en kades.

In de straten van het centrum is te zien hoe de elegante en sobere stijl van het classicisme opkwam die een weerspiegeling is van de bescheidenheid van de huiseigenaars. Deze stijl is ook terug te vinden in het vroegere ziekenhuis dat ook op wens van Lodewijk XIV is gebouwd 3 en in de gevels van de straten rue Allent en rue de Wissocq 4 . In de rue Carnot ligt het indrukwekkende Hôtel-Sandelin 5 . Dit is tegenwoordig het stadsmuseum. Achter de fijn gedecoreerde stenen gevel zijn verzamelingen van aardewerk en religieuze kunst te vinden.

Op nummer 20 van de rue Saint-Bertin ligt het Hôtel de Berghes 6 dat uitkijkt op het Saint-Denis hofje. De gevel is uiterst sober maar de binnenhuisdecoratie roept het 18de eeuwse leven op.

In de collegewijk 7 , waar men zich al vier eeuwen aan onderwijs wijdt, lidden de herenhuizen tussen de grote religieuze gebouwen. Aan het vroegere bisschopsseminarie met de trapgevel is het Vlaamse verleden van de stad te herkennen. De barokke gevel van het vroegere Waalse jezuëtencollege is vijf verdiepingen hoog en steekt daarmee hoog boven de wijk uit. De bibliotheek die er meteen naast ligt heeft een indrukwekkend erfgoedcollectie. Het vroegere Engelse jezuïetencollege waar de leden van de Carrollfamilie die tot de oprichters van de Verenigde Staten hoorden studeerden is in klassieke stijl. Voor het Saint-Bertin college heeft men zich geïnspireerd op de Victoriaanse neogotische stijl met heel Britse accenten.

Town of Art and History

In the 18th and 19th centuries, to build their homes in the style that was fashionable in the capital, the nobility of Saint-Omer took as their model the Vauban inspired officers’ pavilion of the de la Barre barracks 1 , and the Episcopal palace, built at the request of Louis XIV. These classical façades transformed the medieval and Flemish-style thoroughfares 2 that link the market squares to the old port and docks.

The streets of the town centre saw the advent of a distinguished and well-metered classical style of building that reflects the discreet elegance of their owners. The old general hospital, also built at the request of Louis XIV 3 , or the facades of the rues Allent and de Wissocq 4 are all in keeping with this style. In rue Carnot 5 , the imposing hotel Sandelin, with its stoneworked façade and subtle designs, stands proudly in its own grounds. Now the town’s museum, it contains a rich collection of religious art and ceramics.

In the rue Saint-Bertin 6 which leads to Saint-Denis’ Close, the unadorned façade of the hôtel de Berghes (no. 20) contrasts with its interior décor which shows how people lived in the 18th century.

In the colleges quarter 7 that has been devoted to education for four centuries, these mansions stand shoulder to shoulder with some major religious edifices. With its stepped gables, the old episcopal seminary recalls the period when the town was under Flemish rule. The five storey baroque façade of the chapel of the Walloon Jesuit college rises above the quarter. Just a stone’s throw away, the district library boasts a remarkable collection of documents on the town’s heritage. The old English Jesuits college, where members of the Carroll family, among whom were some of the pilgrim fathers that founded the USA, studied, was built in the classic tradition. The more recent Saint-Bertin’s college is in the neogothic Victorian style and has a decidedly British look to it.

une ViLLe de cOmmerceC’est avec l’essor du commerce, après l’an mil, que Saint-Omer devient une grande cité marchande. Cette évolution se lit encore à travers les rues et les places. La place du Vieux Marché, actuelle place Victor Hugo 8 , au pied de l’enclos de la cathédrale est la plus ancienne. Devenue insuffisante, les marchands lui adjoignirent au XIIIe siècle la Place du Grand marché, actuelle Place Foch 10 , toujours très vivante avec ses terrasses, restaurants et commerces. L’ancienne place du marché aux poissons, actuelle Place Pierre Bonhomme, du nom d’un résistant audomarois, les relie.

La superficie de la Place Foch témoigne de l’intense activité économique de Saint-Omer au Moyen-Âge. Véritable vitrine de la cité à toutes les époques, elle collectionne les images des pouvoirs. L’ancien bâtiment de la scelle (actuelle Société Générale), inspiré des façades construites dans les Flandres et réalisé en 1593, était une dépendance de la halle échevinale, le siège du pouvoir municipal. Cette dernière a été remplacée au XIXe siècle par l’Hôtel de Ville, de facture néoclassique, dont la silhouette si particulière lui valut, dès sa construction, le sobriquet de « moulin à café ». Actuellement, le rez-de-chaussée abrite le service Ville d’art et d’histoire et le centre culturel, La Comédie de l’Aa.

De l’autre côté de la place se détache par son allure gracieuse, ses pierres blanches et ses statues (Force, Justice, Prudence et Tempérance), l’ancien baillage où officiait le représentant du roi. Hormis à l’arrière de l’Hôtel de Ville, aucun plan d’aménagement n’est venu rompre le joyeux mélange des façades de la place. Depuis ses origines, les commerces ont peuplé les rues qui l’entourent 9 : des ruelles aux noms évocateurs comme la Rue des clouteries ou l’ancienne Rue des cuisiniers, aux grandes voies menant vers les anciens ports comme les actuelles Rues de Calais et de Dunkerque 11 .

It is with the growth in trade after 1000 AD that Saint-Omer became a great trading town. This development has left its marks in the names of the streets and squares. The Place du Vieux marché (Old Market street), presently the Place Victor Hugo 8 , at the foot of the cathedral close, is the oldest. Lacking in space, in the 13th century the traders opened out into the Place du Grand Marché (Big Market Square), currently named Place Foch 10and still bustling with activity, with its pavement cafés, restaurants and shops. The old fish market, now Place Pierre Bonhomme named after a local resistance-fighter, joins the two squares.

The very size of Place Foch shows the intensity of Saint-Omer’s trading activity in the Middle Ages. The history of the town is shown in the great variety of architectural styles, reflecting its various rulers. The old bâtiment de la scelle (presently a bank, the Société Générale), inspired by the Flemish style and built in 1593 was an annex to the alderman’s hall, the seat of municipal power. It was replaced in the 19th century by the neoclassical style Hôtel de Ville whose curious shape earned it the nickname “coffee mill”. The Art and History Town department and cultural centre La Comédie de l’Aa presently occupy the ground floor of this building.

On the other side of the square, the old bailiwick that used to contain the offices of the king’s representative, stands out with its graceful lines, white stones and statues (Strength, Justice, Prudence and Temperance). With the exception of the back of the Hôtel de Ville, nothing has been done to change the happy jumble of styles lining the sides of the square. Since the origins of the town, the surrounding streets have always been busy with tradespeople 9 : from alleys with evocative names such as the rue des Clouteries (Nail-maker Street) or the old rue des Cuisiniers (Cook Street), to the main streets leading to the old docks such as the present Rues de Calais and Dunkerque 11 .

Vanaf het jaar 1000 werd Saint-Omer een grote handelsstad wat in de pleinen en straten terug te zien is: Het oudste plein is het vroegere marktplein aan de voet van de kathedraal: de huidige Place Victor Hugo 8 . Toen dit plein in de 13de eeuw te klein werd koppelden de handelaren hier het grote marktplein aan: de huidige Place Foch 10 . Hier is het tegenwoordig nog heel gezellig met terrasjes, restaurants en winkels. De twee pleinen waren door het plein van de vismarkt verbonden: de huidige Place Pierre Bonhomme (een verzetsstrijder uit de streek).

Uit de grootte van de Place Foch kan men zien dat de handel in Saint-Omer in de Middeleeuwen bloeide. De gebouwen rond het plein zijn een weerspiegeling van de verschillende gezaghebbers door de eeuwen heen. Het gebouw van de vroegere rechtbank (nu de Société Générale) uit 1593 heeft een Vlaamse gevel. Het was een afdeling van de Hal der Schepenen, de zetel van het gemeentebestuur. In de 19de eeuw werd de Hal door het neoklassieke Hôtel de Ville vervangen dat door de vorm al gauw de bijnaam “koffiemolen” kreeg. Hier zijn tegenwoordig de Dienst voor Erfgoed en het Culturele centrum van de stad gehuisvest.

Aan de andere kant van het plein staat het witstenen baljuwhuis met vier beelden (Kracht, Justitie, Voorzicht en Matigheid) waar de baljuw de koning vertegenwoordigde. Aan dit vrolijke mengsel van gevels is niets veranderd met uitzondering van de achterkant van het gemeentehuis. Ook in de straten rond het plein 9 draaide het om de handel wat in de straatnamen terug te zien is: rue des Clouteries (spijkermakers), de vroegere rue des Cuisiniers (koksstraat) en de straten die naar de vroegere havens leidden zoals de rue de Calais en de rue de Dunkerque 11 .

dans La sérénité des encLOsLe long de l’axe originel de la ville reliant la cathédrale sur les hauteurs, à l’ancienne abbaye Saint-Bertin dans la ville basse, Saint-Omer a supréserver, voire créer des espaces plus intimes, à l’écart du tumulte. A l’ouest de la ville où les fortifications étaient si imposantes, les autorités ont aménagé un remarquable jardin public, à la fin du XIXe siècle 12 .

Face au jardin, se dresse la tour de la cathédrale sertie dans son enclos, un des berceaux historiques de la ville 13 . Un audio guide permet de découvrir les étapes de la construction et le mobilier de ce remarquable édifice. L’accès à l’enclos se fait par cinq rues étroites gardant la trace des portes qui, autrefois, permettaient de le fermer. Les anciennes maisons des chanoines ceinturent cet espace rythmé par les cloches et le carillon. Au chevet, derrière l’ancien palais épiscopal, actuel tribunal 14 , le jardin de l’évêque a été restitué.

En descendant la rue Saint-Bertin jusqu’à l’abbaye du même nom, vous pourrez traverser par d’étroites ruelles l’enclos Saint-Denis 15 dominé par sa tour médiévale, puis l’ancien enclos Saint-Jean 16 , actuelle place Saint-Jean, où la salle de concert laisse échapper de nouveaux airs de musique. Plus bas, en franchissant la rivière 17 , vous découvrirez l’ancien enclos de l’abbaye Saint-Bertin, le second berceau de la cité, là où s’installèrent les moines envoyés par Omer au VIIe siècle 18 . Le rayonnement de cette abbaye fut intense à toutes les époques. Les œuvres conservées au musée de l’Hôtel Sandelin en témoignent. Les bâtiments furent détruits en partie après la Révolution, mais de récents aménagements paysagers permettent, la journée, de comprendre l’organisation de l’abbatiale, du cloître et de découvrir des jardins médiévaux. Tandis qu’à la tombée de la nuit, la mise en lumière révèle la qualité des vestiges.


Quiet nooks and cornersAlong the original route between the cathedral, high up in the town, to the old Saint-Bertin’s abbey in the low town, Saint-Omer has kept or created some quiet corners away from all the hustle and bustle of the town. At the west end of the town, where the fortified walls were at their highest, the town authorities installed a splendid park at the end of the 19th century 12 .

Opposite the park the cathedral rises up from its close, one of the earliest landmarks of the town 13 . An audio guide is available to explain the stages of construction and the furnishings of this impressive edifice. Access to the close is via five narrow streets that still have the vestiges of the gates which used to close off the town. The old houses where the canons resided circle the close which resounds with the chimes of the cathedral bells throughout the day. Behind the old Episcopal palace, now home of the law courts 14 , the bishop’s garden has been restored.

As you go down the rue Saint-Bertin towards the abbey of the same name, take some of the narrow alleys crossing the Saint-Denis 15 close with its medieval tower, then the old close of Saint-Jean, now the place Saint-Jean 16 , where music can sometimes be heard drifting from the concert hall. Further down, across the river 17 , you will discover the old close of Saint-Bertin’s abbey, the second oldest landmark of the city where the monks sent by Omer in the 7th century settled 18 . The influence of this abbey was felt far and wide throughout the centuries. This can be seen by some of the pieces kept in the Hôtel Sandelin Museum. The buildings were partly destroyed after the French Revolution, but recent work to landscape the site has included a topographic view of how the abbey and cloisters were organized and the reconstruction of the medieval gardens. At night, these features are illuminated to show the beauty of the ruins.


In de rust van de hofjesLangs de oorspronkelijke hoofdstraat die van de kathedraal in de bovenstad naar de vroegere Saint-Bertin abdij in de benedenstad liep zijn rustige plaatsen bewaard of aangelegd. Bovendien werd aan de westkant van de stad, waar de vestingwerken zo indrukwekkend waren, aan het eind van de 19de eeuw een prachtig stadspark aangelegd 12 .

Tegenover het park ligt de kathedraal met het hofje 13 . Met een audiogids kunt u de kunstwerken en de verschillende etappes van de bouw ontdekken. U komt het hofje via één van de nauwe straatjes binnen. Hier zijn nog sporen te zien van de vroegere poorten waarmee het hofje werd afgesloten. Rond deze binnenplaats liggen de vroege kanunnikenhuizen. Het vroegere bisschoppelijke paleis dat tegenwoordig de rechtbank is 14 ligt achter de kathedraal. De tuin ervan is opnieuw aangelegd.

Als u via de rue Saint-Bertin naar de abdij met dezelfde naam loopt kunt u via een nauw steegje in het Saint-Denis hof 15 met de middeleeuwse toren komen. Daarna komt u bij het vroegere Saint-Jean hofje 16waar uit de concertzaal muziek ontsnapt. Verder naar de benedenstad steekt u de gracht over 17 en ontdekt u het hof van de vroegere Saint-Bertin abdij. Hier vestigden zich de monniken die in de 7de eeuw door Omer gestuurd werden 18 . Het is dan ook de tweede bron van de stad en van de abdij ging vele eeuwen lang een grote uitstraling uit. Vele werken die het Hôtel Sandelin Museum te zien zijn herinneren hieraan. De bouwwerken zijn na de Franse revolutie voor een groot deel afgebroken maar dankzij de recent aanlegde tuinen kunt u de organisatie van de abdij en het klooster begrijpen en de middeleeuwse tuinen ontdekken. ‘s Avonds zijn de ruïnes kleurrijk belicht.

A remarkable parkA leaflet (in French) is available at the Tourist Office to guide you around this landscaped park. It has an arboretum where the rarest species are identified. Each year, on the first weekend of June, a nationwide event “Rendez-vous in the Park” is held there.

Een heel bijzonder parkBij he Bureau voor Toerisme vindt u een brochure (in het Frans) over dit stadspark waar u heerlijk kunt wandelen en ontspannen. Het park heeft een arboretum, de meest zeldzame soorten hebben een naamplaat. Elk jaar vindt in het eerste weekend van juni het landelijke evenement “Open tuinen” plaats.

Pour mettre en valeur la culture traditionnelle, la ville de Saint-Omer organise, chaque premier week-end d’octobre, une fête du légume. Au programme : visites de jardins, brocante, marché flottant, conférences, concerts, menus valorisant les produits du marais...

saint-Omer au fiL de L’eauVers les quais et les anciens ports, une autre ville se dévoile. Saint-Omer doit son prodigieux essor commercial au Moyen-Âge à son installation sur un site privilégié au bord d’un vaste marécage aménagé pour les cultures. Les marchandises transitaient sur l’Aa canalisée à partir du XIIe siècle, par le Port au lait battu à l’origine 26 , puis au bas de la Rue de Dunkerque. Elles étaient déchargées sur des quais desservant des marchés, répartis dans le bas de la ville, que l’on découvre encore en partie en suivant la rivière des Salines 22 et la Place du Vainquai, 19 jusqu’à l’enclos Saint-Bertin. Le circuit côté ville* vous y accompagne.

Au-delà, se découvre le Quai du commerce donnant sur le canal, 23 et son front bâti au début du XXe siècle, qui a succédé aux remparts et aux fossés. De l’autre côté, se dresse tel un château classique, l’imposante gare classée monument historique 20 . Derrière elle, se déploient au bord de l’eau les deux faubourgs de Saint-Omer, nichés entre la ville et le marais : Lyzel derrière la gare 21 et Le Haut-Pont tourné vers Watten et Dunkerque 24 . Le circuit côté marais* permet de les traverser et d’appréhender le réseau des wateringues, et l’habitat traditionnel des anciennes exploitations maraîchères.

Evénement : Constitué de bacôves magnifiquement décorés, le cortège nautique attire chaque dernier dimanche de juillet, des dizaines de milliers de spectateurs. Une fête du marais qui fait la réputation du faubourg du Haut-Pont !

A l’arrière de ces faubourgs maraîchers 25 , s’ouvre l’étendue du marais audomarois. Son développement et celui de la ville ont toujours été intimement liés. La domestication progressive de ce marécage a débuté au Moyen-Âge sous la houlette des moines de l’abbaye Saint-Bertin, vite relayés par les habitants. Durant des siècles, le marais a nourri, chauffé la ville, et assuré sa protection sur trois de ses quatre côtés.

Saint-Omer, the vegetable capital To promote its market-gardening traditions, each year the town of Saint-Omer holds a vegetable fair on the first weekend in October. Events include garden tours, boot fair, floating market, conferences, concerts, menus based on the produce of the wetlands…

Saint-Omer on the waterAs you go on towards the docks and old port, another facet of the town is revealed. Saint-Omer owes its prodigious growth in the Middle Ages to its prime location on the edge of a vast wetland reclaimed for cultivation.

The goods would arrive from the Aa river, transformed into a canal in the twelfth century, via the «Buttermilk» Port 26 originally, and then later at the bottom of the rue de Dunkerque. They were unloaded onto the docks and from there taken straight to the markets in the low town which can still be partly seen along the Salines river 22 and the Place du Vainquai 19 up to Saint-Bertin’s close. Follow the “côté ville”* guide (in French).

Further on, you will see the trading docks overlooking the canal 23 with its front built at the beginning of the 20th century in place of the ramparts and moats. On the other side we can see the imposing castle-like railway station, now a listed building 20 . Behind it extend the two market-gardening suburbs of Saint-Omer along the waterside, nestling between the town and the wetlands: Lyzel behind the station 21 and Le Haut-Pont going towards Watten and Dunkerque 24 . The “côté marais”* guide (in French) helps you find your way around these wetlands, following the network of wateringues, and see the traditional dwellings of the old market gardeners.

Event The nautical procession of splendidly decorated punts or “bacôves” attracts thousands of watchers-on each last Sunday in July. It is a festival that has really put the Haut-Pont suburb on the map !

Behind these market gardens 25 extend the wetlands. Their development has always been closely linked with that of the town. The gradual reclaiming of this vast marshland began in the early Middle Ages under the incentive of the monks of Saint-Bertin’s abbey, and quickly taken over by the local population. For many centuries, the wetlands have fed and heated the townspeople and offered a natural defence on three of its four sides.

De handelswaren werden vanaf de twaalfde eeuw over de gekanaliseerde Aa getransporteerd.

Overslag vond eerst plaats in de Port au Lait battu haven 26 en aan het eind van de rue de Dunkerque. De waren werden op de kades gelost en naar de verschillende markten van de benedenstad getransporteerd. Dit zien we nog terug als we de Rivière des Salines 22 volgen en van de Place du Vainquai 19 tot aan het Saint-Bertin hof lopen. In de brochure côté ville* (in het Frans) vindt u hierover uitleg.

Iets verder langs het water ligt de kade Quai du Commerce 23 met de gebouwen die na de ontmanteling van de stadsmuren in de 20ste eeuw gebouwd zijn. Aan de andere kant van het water ligt het indrukwekkende station in klassieke stijl dat op de lijst van Rijksmonumenten staat 20 . Achter het gebouw beginnen de polders met de twee buitenwijken die langs het water liggen: de wijk Lyzel achter het station 21 en de wijk Haut-Pont iets richting Watten en Duinkerke 24 . In de wandeling côté marais* (in het Frans) doorkruist u deze wijken en ontdekt u het netwerk van sloten en de traditionele tuindershuizen.

Evenementen Vele duizenden toeschouwers komen elk jaar op de laatste zondag van juli naar de optocht van vele prachtig versierde platte boten kijken. Dit is hèt polderfeest van de wijk Haut-Pont !

De Audomarois-polders beginnen direct achter de tuinderswijken 25 . De polders en de stad zijn in hun ontwikkeling altijd nauw opgegaan. De monniken van de Saint-Bertin abdij begonnen in de middeleeuwen met de inpoldering van dit grote moeras, de bewoners namen dit al gauw over. De stad is eeuwenlang door de polders gevoed, verwarmd en aan drie kanten beschermd.

Les collections sont présentées au sein d’un très bel hôtel particulier en pierre blanche, bâti entre une cour pavée et un petit jardin à la française. Erigé en 1776 pour Marie-Josèphe Sandelin, comtesse de Fruges, ce bâtiment comprend un pavillon central et deux ailes en retour, de style Louis XV. Des sculptures de pierre ornent chaque façade. Outre des salons de réception, les visiteurs découvrent des cabinets d’amateur (ainsi désignait-on le collectionneur des XVIIe et XVIIIe siècles) avant de se laisser surprendre par des ambiances de nef ou de crypte d’église. Les collections exposées s’étendent du XIe au XIXe siècles, présentées en 3 parcours :

Le parcours Histoire :Des objets provenant de la ville de Saint-Omer ou de ses environs rendent compte de la richesse des arts en Flandre et en Artois au Moyen-Âge : pièces d’orfèvrerie ; sculptures de bois, pierre, albâtre, ivoire ; tapisseries ; tableaux ; dalles de pavement ; mosaïques…Le parcours Histoire propose également une impressionnante collection d’armes blanches et d’armes à feu, ainsi qu’une illustration de la vie quotidienne du XVIIe au XVIIIe siècle (salles d’histoire locale ; collection de pipes émaillées en terre cuite).

Le parcours Beaux-Arts : De grandes œuvres de la peinture flamande, hollandaise et française du XVIe au XIXe siècles sont exposées au rez-de-chaussée et à l’étage, dans les grands salons d’apparat, les salles de céramique, les cabinets d’amateur et l’aile d’art religieux. Elles sont alors associées à du mobilier d’époque et à de nombreux et remarquables objets d’art.

Le parcours Céramique :L’une des plus belles collections de céramiques en France illustre ici l’évolution des arts de la table à l’époque moderne. Sont présentées des œuvres des plus grandes manufactures européennes des XVIIe, XVIIIe et XIXe siècles : Delft, Nevers, Marseille, Rouen, Sinceny, Lille, Saint-Amand, Saint-Omer, Sèvres… Sans oublier les productions porcelainières chinoise et japonaise qui ont tant émerveillé nos ancêtres !

Peintre de la cour de Louis XV, Jean-Marc Nattier réalisa ce portrait de la favorite du roi en 1748. Laissant apparaître la marquise sous les traits de Diane, déesse de la chasse, il est la réplique partielle d’un portrait en buste conservé à Versailles.

These collections are presented in a splendid mansion house build of white stone with a paved courtyard at the front and a small French-style garden at the back. Built in 1776 for Marie-Josephe Sandelin, the countess of Fruges, this building has a central part and two wings in the style of Louis XV. Each facade is decorated with stone sculptures.As well as the reception rooms, visitors can see its curiosity cabinets (containing the “collectables” of the 17th and 18th centuries) as well as the unusual crypt-like volumes of its basement. The collections exhibited range from the 11th to the 19th century, and are organized into three theme-based tours:

History tour:Objects from the town of Saint-Omer or its surroundings reflect the richness of the arts in Flanders and Artois in the middle ages : gold and silversmithery, sculptures in wood, stone, alabaster and ivory, tapestries, paintings, paving, mosaics, etc.The History tour also includes an impressive collection of swords and firearms, as well as an insight into everyday life in the 17th and 18th centuries (local history rooms; collection of enamelled clay pipes).

Fine-Arts tour: Old masters of the Flemish, Dutch and French schools of the 16th to the 19th centuries are exhibited in the main ground floor and first floor reception rooms, with some small ceramics rooms, curiosity cabinets and religious art section. They are presented in rooms furnished with period furniture and a great many art objects of particular interest.

Ceramics tour:One of the finest collections of ceramics in France illustrates here the development of tableware in modern times. The work of some of the greatest European manufactories of the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries is presented: Delft, Nevers, Marseille, Rouen, Sinceny, Lille, Saint-Amand, Saint-Omer, Sèvres… The museum also has a large collection of Chinese and Japanese porcelain that inspired our ancestors so much!

In een prachtig witstenen herenhuis dat tussen een geplaveide binnenplaats en een kleine Franse tuin ligt zijn verrassende collecties te zien. Het bouwwerk is in 1776 voor de gravin van Fruges Marie-Josèphe Sandelin gebouwd. Het heeft een centraal gedeelte en twee naar voren springende vleugels in de stijl van Lodewijk XV met op de gevels stenen beelden. U vindt de sfeer van ontvangstzalen of amateurskabinetten (zo werden de verzamelaars uit de 17de en 18de eeuw genoemd) en die van een kerk of een crypte. De Geschiedenisroute: Voorwerpen uit de stad Saint-Omer of uit de directe omgeving geven een goed beeld van de rijkdom van de Middeleeuwse Vlaamse en Artesische kunst: houten, ivoren, stenen of albasten beelden; edelsmeedwerk, wandtapijten, schilderijen, tegels, mozaïeken…In deze themaroute is ook een indrukwekkende verzameling van steek- en vuurwapens ondergebracht. Daarnaast wordt het dagelijks leven van de 17de en 18de eeuw getoond (plaatselijke geschiedenis, geëmailleerde en gebakken pijpen).

De Schone Kunsten route :De belangrijke Vlaamse, Nederlandse en Franse schilderwerken uit de 16de tot 19de eeuw zijn te zien in grote salons, amateurskabinetten, zalen met keramiek en in de zalen met religieuze kunst. Meubels en opmerkelijke kunstvoorwerpen uit die tijd maken er een harmonies geheel van.

Keramiekroute:Hier vindt u één van de mooiste Franse keramiekverzamelingen waarin de ontwikkeling van de tafeldecoratie goed te zien is. De werken komen uit de grootste Europese fabrieken van de 17de, 18de en 19de eeuw : Delft, Nevers, Rouen, Sinceny, Lille, Saint-Amand, Saint-Omer, Sèvres… En niet te vergeten het Chinese en Japanse porselein waar onze voorouders zo versteld van stonden!

Blottie au creux de la vallée de la Lys, Thérouanne fut la capitale de la Morinie avant de devenir en 638 le siège d’un des évêchés les plus riches du Nord de la France. Au Xe siècle, de très nombreux pèlerins avaient coutume d’y faire une halte lorsqu’ils suivaient les pas de Sigéric, archevêque de Cantorbéry. Celui-ci s’était rendu à pied jusqu’à Rome par la Via Francigena. Cette voie romaine, empruntée par les humbles comme les empereurs, favorisa les échanges intellectuels à travers toute l’Europe. Aujourd’hui encore, de nombreux randonneurs parcourent ce chemin.

Succédant à un groupe épiscopal carolingien, la Cathédrale de Thérouanne, construite dès le XIIe siècle, était l’un des plus beaux édifices gothiques du Nord de la France. Au cœur de l’empire de Charles Quint, Thérouanne faisait figure d’enclave française. En conflit avec François 1er, Charles Quint donna l’ordre de raser toute la ville. Les édifices civils et religieux furent détruits en 1553. Des pièces remarquables ont heureusement été sauvées, comme notamment le Grand Dieu de Thérouanne qui est présenté aujourd’hui dans la Cathédrale de Saint-Omer.

Ce passé se découvre aujourd’hui au détour d’une visite de la chapelle de Nielles-les-Thérouanne qui est le dernier vestige de l’ancienne cité. Jumelé à Pompei, le site archéologique présente quant à lui les vestiges des fondations de l’ancienne Cathédrale et accueille chaque année, en juin, des étudiants de l’Ecole des Chartes de Paris. Le Musée possède trois salles d’exposition : Thérouanne à l’époque gallo-romaine, le site de Thérouanne à travers son histoire, les objets de l’époque médiévale provenant du site de la Cathédrale.

Nestling in the Lys valley, Thérouanne used to be the capital of Morini before it became the seat of one of the wealthiest bishoprics in the North of France in 638. It used to be a favorite stopping place for the many pilgrims that followed the route taken by Sigeric, archbishop of Cantorbéry who walked to Rome along the Via Francigena. This roman road, used by commoners and emperors alike, contributed to the sharing of ideas throughout the whole of Europe. It is now a long distance footpath enjoyed by walkers.

The successor of a Carolingian episcopal group, the cathedral of Thérouanne, whose construction was begun in the 12th century, was one of the finest gothic cathedrals in the North of France. Located in the heart of the holy roman empire of Charles V of Spain, Thérouanne was reputed to be a French stronghold. At war with François I, Charles V ordered that the town be destroyed. All civic and religious buildings were rased to the ground in 1553. Fortunately, some items of great artistic importance were salvaged, such as the Grand Dieu de Thérouanne, which now has pride of place in Saint-Omer cathedral.

A visit to the last remaining vestige of the ancient city, the Chapelle de Nielles-les-Thérouanne, will explain the history of the city. The ruins of the foundations of the old cathedral can be seen at the archeological site, which is twinned with Pompei, and receives, each year in June, a group of students from the Ecole des Chartes in Paris. There are 3 exhibition rooms at the museum, presenting Thérouanne in the Gallo-Roman period, Thérouanne over the ages and medieval objects found at the former site of the cathedral.

Thérouanne, in het dal van de Leie, was de hoofdstad van Morinie voordat het stadje in 638 de zetel van één van de rijkste bisdommen van Noord-Frankrijk werd. In de 10de eeuw hadden pelgrims de gewoonte om er een halt te maken terwijl ze de weg van de aartsbisschop Sigeric van Cantorbéry volgden die over de Via Francigena naar Rome liep. De Romeinse weg, die zowel door eenvoudige burgers als keizers gebruikt werd, zorgde voor de uitwisseling van ideeën dwars door Europa. Vele wandelaars volgen dit voetpad ook nu nog.

De kathedraal van Therouanne uit de 12de eeuw was één van de mooiste gothische bouwerken van Noord-Frankrijk. Therouanne vormde een Franse enclave midden in het keizerrijk van Karel V. Toen hij vocht tegen Frans I gaf Karel V de opdracht om de stad te verwoesten en zowel religieuze als publieke gebouwen werden in 1553 met de grond gelijk gemaakt. Enkele kunstwerken zijn gelukkig behouden, zoals de Grand Dieu de Thérouanne die nu in de kathedraal van Saint-Omer te zien is.

Dit verleden is nu nog te vinden in een bezoek aan het kerkje de Nielles-de-Thérouanne dat een laatste overblijfsel is van de vroegere stad. De archeologische vindplaats van deze zusterstad van Pompei toont fundamenten van de vroegere kathedraal. Elk jaar in juni werken hier studenten van de Ecole des Chartes de Paris.Het museum heeft 3 expositiezalen : Thérouanne in het Gallo-Romaanse tijdperk, Thérouanne door de eeuwen heen, Middeleeuwse voorwerpen van de Kathedraal.

« Faire franchir à des péniches de 300 tonnes une dénivellation de 13 mètres séparant les bassins de l’Aa et de la Lys », tel fut le défi relevé en 1887 par les ingénieurs, avec la construction à Arques d’un ascenseur à bateaux révolutionnaire.

Unique en France, cet ouvrage réalisé sur un modèle anglais, a fonctionné jusqu’en 1967. Désormais converti en musée, l’ascenseur à bateaux des Fontinettes à Arques fait découvrir l’évolution du monde de la batellerie : maquettes, atelier de réparation et forge, machinerie d’époque, vidéo sur l’ascenseur en fonctionnement…

En complément des annexes de l’ascenseur à bateaux des Fontinettes, embarquez pour une croisière au choix : le passage de l’écluse de Flandres et la découverte du marais audomarois, le passage de l’écluse des Fontinettes et La Voie du Sable.

De Arques à Lumbres et retour, un petit voyage vers les années 50 à bord d’un autorail rouge et crème « Le Picasso »… On a le temps de prendre son temps, à 30 km/h, de regarder le paysage de la Vallée de l’Aa déambuler sous nos yeux.

Il relie différents sites touristiques de l’Ascenseur à Bateaux des Fontinettes à la Coupole d ‘Helfaut, jusque Lumbres et peut se prolonger par de belles randonnées pédestres ou VTT. Haltes à la gare de Blendecques, qui héberge une exposition de matériels ferroviaires sauvegardés, et à l’ancienne gare d’Arques, qui abrite sous sa halle aux marchandises une locomotive à vapeur des années 40.

Le chemin de fer touristique circule le dimanche et jours fériés en mai et septembre, les week-ends et jours fériés en juin, juillet, août (hors trains spéciaux), et toute l’année pour les groupes sur réservation.

« Enable 300 barges to cross a 13 meter difference in level between the Aa and Lys canal pools », this was the feat of engineering achieved in 1887 with a revolutionary ship lift. This unique example in France, based on an English design, was inoperation until 1967.

Now converted into a museum, the Fontinettes ship lift in Arques presents the changing world of the canal workers by means of scale models, a repair shop and forge, machinery of the time, video of the ship lift in operation…

As well as visiting the annexes of the Ship Lift, you can choose between three different boat tours: the Saint-Omer wetlands, crossing the Flanders or Fontinettes locks or the Sand Route. From Arques to Lumbres and back, a trip into the 1950’s on a red and ivory autorail named « Le Picasso ». At 30 kph you will have plenty of time to enjoy the scenery of the Aa valley as it rolls past.

It links a number of tourist sites, from the Fontinettes ship lift to the Coupole d’Helfaut and to Lumbres, where you can continue on your way on foot or by bike. It stops at Blendeques station where there is an exhibition of old railway equipment, and at the old station of Arques whose goods yard contains a 1940’s steam train.

The tourist railway operates on Sundays and public holidays in May and September, weekends and public holidays in June, July and August (in addition to special runs) and all year round for groups by prior booking.

« Vrachtschepen van 300 ton het hoogteverschil van 13m. tussen de Aa en de Leie laten overbruggen » was in 1887 de uitdaging die ingenieurs zich stelden bij het ontwerpen van de revolutionnaire scheepslift. Dit bouwwerk, uniek in Frankrijk, is naar Engels model gemaakt en heeft tot 1967 gewerkt.

Tegenwoordig is de Scheepslift van “les Fontinettes” in Arques een museum waar u de ontwikkelingen van de binnenvaart kunt ontdekken: maquettes, de werkplaats en reparatieruimte, de oude machinekamer, een video over de werkende scheepslift…

Als aansluiting op een bezoek aan bijgebouwen van de Scheepslift kunt u een rondvaart maken naar de Audomarois-polders, door de Flanders-of de Fontinette-sluis en de Route van Zand ontdekken.

Maak een vijftiger jaren ritje van Lumbres naar Arques aan boord van het rood-beige Picasso treintje. Met een snelheid van 30 km per uur heeft U alle tijd om het landschap van het Aa-dal te bewonderen.

Langs de route liggen verschillende attracties zoals de Scheepslift Fontinettes en La Coupole van Helfaut, maar u kunt het ritje ook aanvullen met een mooie wandeling of een fietstocht. In het stationnetje van Blendecques vindt u een tentoonstelling van vroeger treinmateriaal en in de goederenhal van het vroeger station van Arques een stoomlocomotief uit de jaren 40.

Het toeristische treintje rijdt in mei en september op zon-en feestdagen, in juni, juli en augustus op zaterdag, zondag en op feestdagen (daarnaasts extra dagen). Groepen kunnen het hele jaar een rit aanvragen.

Base de lancement de fusées V2 unique en Europe

Sous un dôme colossal de 91 mètres de diamètre, 5,50 mètres d’épaisseur et 55 000 tonnes, La Coupole plonge les visiteurs dans une expérience historique et culturelle totale. Base secrète construite en 1943-1944 par l’organisation Todt, la forteresse souterraine abritait les préparatifs de l’arme secrète d’Hitler qui aurait pu anéantir l’Angleterre et inverser le cours de la Seconde Guerre mondiale : la fusée V2.

La Coupole est aujourd’hui un Centre d’Histoire ultramoderne unique en Europe. La nouvelle scénographie inaugurée au printemps 2010 s’appuie sur des technologies audiovisuelles au service de la compréhension historique : images de synthèse, écrans 3D, tables tactiles, cinémas modernisés, espaces agrandis, effets sonores et lumineux… De la folie nazie à la face cachée de la conquête spatiale, en passant par les années noires de l’Occupation, La Coupole offre une immersion dans le passé et un regard neuf sur le présent.

Une nouvelle visite

C’est par un sombre tunnel où résonnent les bruits de chantier et de bombardements que l’on accède au lumineux dôme de béton. Deux circuits sont proposés : « Les Armes Nouvelles V1 et V2 » sur les traces de Wernher von Braun, l’ingénieur allemand à l’origine de la fusée V2 et des premiers pas de l’Homme sur la Lune. Le parcours « Le Nord de la France dans la main allemande » se penche quant à lui sur les grandes périodes de l’Occupation : l’invasion, l’exode, la vie quotidienne, la Résistance, la Collaboration et la Libération.

Autre nouveauté, le Mémorial des Fusillés et Déportés de la région Nord-Pas-de-Calais, inauguré en 2010, qui rend hommage aux victimes de l’occupation nazie.

V2 rocket launching base unique in EuropeUnder a huge dome 91 metres in diameter, 5.50 metres thick and weighing 55,000 tons, La Coupole immerses its visitors in a total historical and cultural experience. Constructed in 1943-1944 by the Todt organization as a secret base, this underground fortress served to prepare Hitler’s secret weapon that could have wiped out Great Britain and reverse the course of the Second World War. This was the V2 rocket.

La Coupole now houses an ultra-modern History Centre that is unique in Europe. The new scenography inaugurated in the spring of 2010 uses audiovisual technology to bring history alive: computer graphics, 3D and touch-sensitive screens together with fully modernized cinemas and extended visitor spaces and sound and light effects. From Nazi madness and the dark years of the Occupation to the hidden side of the space conquest, La Coupole offers an immersion in the past and a new outlook on the present.

New tour on offerVisitors first walk along a dark tunnel to the sounds of construction work and bombing before reaching the well-lit concrete dome. There are two tours on offer: «V1 and V2 - The New Weapons» that traces the life of Wernher von Braun, the German engineer at the origin of the V2 rocket and man’s first steps on the Moon. “The North of France in the grip of the German Occupation” which takes a look at the main phases of the Occupation: invasion, exodus, everyday life, the Resistance, Collaboration and Liberation.

A Memorial to the Dead and Deported from the Nord-Pas de Calais region was inaugurated in 2010 to pay tribute to the victims of the Nazi occupation.

V2-lanceerbasis, uniek in EuropaOnder een enorme koepel met een doorsnede van 91 meter, een dikte van 5,50 meter en 55.000 ton beton duikt de bezoeker de geschiedenis. Deze geheime ondergrondse basis werd in 1943-1944 door de organisatie Todt gebouwd om Hitler’s geheime wapens te bereiden die Engeland hadden moeten verwoesten waardoor WOII heel anders zou verlopen.

La Coupole is tegenwoordig een uiterst modern Historisch Centrum. In 2010 is de museale inrichting helemaal veranderd en de geschiedenis wordt met uiterst moderne audiovisuele technieken uitgelegd: computergraphics, 3D-beeldschermen, multi-touch tafels, moderne bioscopen, licht- en geluidseffecten… Van de waanzin van de nazi’s tot de verborgen kant van de ruimtevaart via de donkere jaren van de Bezetting gaat u in de Coupole gaat u helemal in het verleden op waardoor u een nieuwe blik krijgt op de wereld van vandaag.

Een nieuw bezoekOm onder de lichte koepel te komen moet u eerst door een lange donkere tunnel waar het geluid van bombardementen en werkzaamheden weerklinken. U kunt kiezen uit twee thema’s: ‘De Nieuwe Wapens V1 en V2’ in het spoor van Wernher von Braun, de Duitse ingenieur die aan de voet van de V2-raketten staat wat later geleid heeft tot de eerste Man op de Maan. Het andere thema ‘Noord-Frankrijk in Duitse handen’ gaat in op de periode van de Bezetting met de them’s: invasie, exodus, het dagelijkse leven, het verzet, collaboratie en de bevrijding.

In 2010 is het Memorial voor Gefusilleerden en Gedeporteerden uit de streek Noord/ Pas-de-Calais ingewijd ter herdenking van de slachtoffers van het nazi-regime.

A trading town


Alors que le cours de la guerre lui devient défavorable, Hitler soutient un programme de construction d’armes secrètes à Peenemünde. Mises en place par Wernher von Braun, et construites à Dora par les déportés, « les armes de représailles » V1 et V2 doivent paralyser les alliés. Au terme du conflit, les vainqueurs (Etats-Unis, URSS et Europe) récupèrent les ex-ingénieurs et techniciens nazis qui, forts des connaissances acquises, travailleront à la course à l’espace.

Le Blockhaus d’Eperlecques témoigne de cette histoire. A l’orée de la forêt, il impose par ses dimensions : 360 000 tonnes de matériaux, 22 mètres de haut sur 1 hectare, et par la prouesse technique qu’il représente. Il devait abriter la première base de lancement de fusées V2, pointées sur Londres et Anvers pendant la deuxième guerre mondiale 39/45. Sa construction ayant été contrariée par un bombardement de forteresses volantes anglaises en août 1943, le projet fut transformé en une usine de fabrication d’oxygène liquide destinée à l’alimentation du moteur des V2.

La visite guidée ou autoguidée (montage sonore) et un audiovisuel présenté à l’intérieur du Blockhaus retracent l’histoire de son édification, ainsi que la construction des V1 et des fusées V2. Le site montre le lien entre la conquête de l’espace et l’effort de guerre allemand. En venant visiter le Blockhaus d’Eperlecques, site classé Monument Historique depuis 1985, vous découvrirez une authentique rampe de lancement et son V1 prêt à décoller, ainsi que du matériel militaire d’époque.

1943 : The Germans decided to build a V2 launching base in Eperlecquesin the North of France As the tide began to turn against him, Hitler approved a programme of secret weapons to be constructed in Peenemünde. Designed by Wernher von Braun and constructed in Dora by prisoners of war, the « weapons of retaliation », the V1 and V2 rockets, were intended to bring the allied forces to a standstill. When the war ended, the Allies (USA, URSS and Europe) captured the nazi engineers and technicians in order to profit from their technical know-how and thus enter into the space race.

The Eperlecques Bunker is a testimony to this past. Located at the edge of the forest, this enormous edifice containing 360,000 tonnes of materials, standing 22 meters high and covering 1 hectare, represents a real technical feat of engineering. It was to house the first launching base for the V2 rockets, aimed at London and Antwerp during World War II (1939-1945). When the construction of the bunker was set back by the British air strikes in August 1943, it was decided to transform the edifice into a plant for manufacturing the liquid oxygen needed to power the engines of the V2 rockets.

The tour and audiovisual items presented inside the Bunker retrace the story of how it was built, as well as the construction of the V1 and V2 rockets. The site illustrates the link between space conquest and the German war effort. Visitors to the Eperlecques Bunker, a listed building since 1985, will discover an original launching pad with a V1 ready to be fired, together with military paraphernalia of the era.

Hitler steunde tijdens WO II een ontwikkelings- programma voor geheime wapens in Peenemünde. Wernher von Braun ontwikkelde daar de vergeldingswapens V1 en V2 om de geallieerden stil te leggen. De wapens werden in Dora door gedeporteerden gefabriceerd. Aan het eind van de oorlog namen de geallieerden (VS, Rusland en Europa) de goedgeïnformeerde ingenieurs en technici in dienst en werkten aan de verovering van de ruimte.

De Bunker van Eperlecques vertelt over deze geschiedenis. Het gebouw aan de rand van het bos is indrukwekkend door zijn omvang en zijn technische uitvoering: 360.000 ton materiaal, 22 m. hoog en gebouwd op 1 ha. De eerste V2 lanceerbasis moest hier tijdens W.O.II ondergebracht worden om Londen en Antwerpen te vernietigen. Na Engelse bombardementen in augustus 1943 werd de bouw stilgelegd en het gebouw werd ingericht als fabriek voor vloeibare zuurstof voor V2 motoren.

In de (audio) rondleiding en de diavoorstelling komt de geschiedenis van de bouw en de V1 en V2 raketten aan bod. Ook wordt getoond hoe de Duitse oorlogstechnieken later gebruikt zijn voor de ruimtevaart. In het bezoek aan de bunker, sinds 1985 rijksmonument, ontdekt u een afvuurbasis met daarop een V1 in lanceerpositie en ander oorlogsmateriaal uit die tijd.

A trading town


Dans le marais protégé, le dépaysement est absolu. Depuis des siècles, les hommes vivent sur ces 3 730 hectares de terre et d’eau, dispersés sur 15 communes du Pas-de-Calais et du Nord, que relie entre elles le passage quotidien de la barque du facteur.

En 638, le Roi Dagobert décide de christianiser le nord de son royaume et confie cette mission à 4 moines : Omer, Bertin, Mommelin et Ebertramn. Omer (Audomar en latin) est nommé évêque de la Morinie, tandis que ses trois compagnons s’installent dans les forêts denses et les marécages. Grâce à leur persévérance, la banale cuvette marécageuse devint progressivement un marais cultivé. Treize siècles furent nécessaires pour détourner les eaux de l’Aa et faciliter leur écoulement jusqu’à la mer, rehausser, drainer et défricher les terres avant leur mise en culture.

Aujourd’hui, le marais audomarois est le seul marais encore cultivé de France, exploité sur environ 440 hectares par une quarantaine de maraîchers. 50 légumes différents y sont produits, mais ce sont surtout le chou-fleur, si savoureux (5 millions de têtes cultivées par an), et plus récemment l’endive, si délicieuse, qui en font la renommée. La carotte de Tilques, l’endive de pleine terre et l’artichaut gros vert de Laon bénéficient de la « Marque Parc Naturel Régional ».

Sa faune et sa flore étonnent, son écosystème surprend : 300 variétés de plantes, un tiers de la flore aquatique française, 210 espèces d’oiseaux observés depuis 20 ans, etc… Joyau fragile, le marais est aussi un espace à protéger : en respectant la végétation et notamment les bancs de nénuphars, en ne laissant aucun détritus derrière soi, en ne s’arrêtant que sur les aires de pique-nique aménagées, en respectant la limitation de vitesse pour les bateaux (6 km/h) et en préservant le bon état des berges.

Après le classement en Réserve Naturelle Nationale du Romelaëre, le marais, grâce à une diversité naturelle riche, a obtenu le label RAMSAR, attribué aux zones humides d’intérêt international.

Internationally Recognized Heritage Site After being classified as a National Nature Reserve, the Romelaëre wetlands around Saint-Omer was awarded the RAMSAR label (given to wetlands of international importance) for the rich diversity of animal and plant species it contains.

Internationale Erkenning van het Erfgoed Het natuurreservaat Romelaëre kreeg twee labels: in juni dat van « nationaal natuurreservaat » en aan eind van het jaar dat van RAMSAR als wetland van internationaal belang.

These protected wetlands are a haven of peace in a unique setting. Since time immemorial, people have lived in these 3730 hectares of land and water, spread over 15 communities in the Pas-de-Calais and North departments, and which still today receive a daily visit from the postman’s boat.

In the year 638, King Dagobert decided to Christianize the north of his kingdom and entrusted this mission to 4 monks, Omer, Bertin, Mommelin and Ebertramn. Audomar (Omer in latin) became bishop of Morini, while his three companions settled in the deep forests and marshlands. Owing to their perseverance, this bog was gradually transformed into cultivated wetlands. It took no less than three centuries to divert the waters of the river Aa towards the sea, and to drain, clear and raise the level of the land before it could be cultivated.

The Audomarois marshes are today the only remaining cultivated wetlands in France, with around forty market gardeners working 440 hectares of land. Although it produces fifty different vegetables, it is particularly well known for its delicious cauliflowers (5 million heads grown per year) and succulent endives. Tilques carrots, soil-grown endive and the large green artichoke of Laon all have the « Parc » label.

It has an abundance of plant and wildlife within a marvellous ecosystem: 300 species of plants, including one third of France’s aquatic plants, 210 species of birds observed in the last 20 years…A fragile jewel, the marshes need to be carefully protected: visitors and boaters are asked not to pick any flowers, particularly the beds of water lilies, to only stop in the designated picnic spots, to keep to the speed limit (6 kph) and avoid damaging the banks.

In deze beschermde polders waant u zich in een totaal andere wereld. Al eeuwen woont de mens op deze 3730 hectaren van land en water, in 15 gemeentes van de Nord-Pas-de-Calais. De postbode verzorgt dagelijks de onderlinge band.

In 638 besloot koning Dagobert het noorden van zijn rijk te kerstenen en stuurde 4 monniken naar de streek: Omer, Bertin, Mommelin en Ebertramn. Audomar (Omer in latijn) werd bisschop van Thérouanne en zijn drie metgezellen vestigden zich in de dichte bossen en moerassen. Dankzij hun doorzettingsvermogen is dit moerassige gebied langzaam maar zeker een gecultiveerde polder geworden. Dertien eeuwen waren nodig om het water van de Aa te kanaliseren en naar zee af te laten vloeien, de grond op te hogen, droog te leggen en te ontginnen voordat tuinbouw mogelijk was.

De Audomarois polder is de enige polder in Frankrijk die nog gecultiveerd is: op 440 hectaren wonen en leven zo’n veertig tuinders. Zij telen minstens 50 verschillende soorten groenten maar de streek is beroemd door de zacht smakende bloemkool, (5 miljoen stuks per jaar) en de knapperige witlof. Wortels van Tilques, Witlof van de koude grond en Artisjokken van Laon hebben het keurmerk van het Natuurpark « Marque Parc ».

Een uitzondwerlijke fauna en flora met een verrassend ecosysteem: 300 plantensoorten, 1/3 van de Franse waterflora, 210 vogelsoorten zijn sinds 20 jaar geobserveerd enz…de polder is als een kwetsbare parel die u kunt helpen beschermen door de planten en m.n. de waterlelies met rust te laten, afval mee te nemen, alleen te stoppen bij de picknickplaatsen, de max. vaarsnelheid te respecteren (6 km/uur) en de goede staat van de oevers te beschermen.

Nouveauté Perpétuant la tradition familiale, Rémy Colin, charpentier de marine, fait visiter son atelier à Clairmarais. A partir du chêne local et de produits naturels, il fabrique bacôves et escutes, les deux embarcations à fond plat typiques du marais.

Loisirs et découvertes, accessibles à tousExploitée jusqu’à la fin du XIXème siècle pour ses dépôts de tourbe, la Réserve Naturelle Nationale du Romelaëre à Clairmarais est aujourd’hui une mosaïque d’étangs et de rivières propice à la balade. Des parcours modulables emmènent les visiteurs valides, déficients visuels et auditifs, et personnes en fauteuil, à des zones d’écoute, puis à un observatoire ornithologique. Des balisages adaptés (plaques en braille, fil d’Ariane, plancher clouté en chêne) ont été mis en place. Des bancs sont disposés tout au long du parcours.

Située à proximité de la Réserve Naturelle et de la forêt de Rihoult-Clairmarais, la Grange Nature accueille, conseille, et informe sur la faune et la flore du marais mais aussi sur les espaces naturels sensibles du Pas-de-Calais. Elle est le lieu d’accueil privilégié des enfants en animations pédagogiques. A proximité de la Grange Nature, un jardin pédagogique a été aménagé avec un hôtel à insecte, des jeux, des instruments de musique fabriqués avec des produits de la nature, une ruche transparente pour observer la vie des abeilles…

La qualité des paysages, le calme, la beauté des lieux… ont fait du marais audomarois, depuis bien longtemps, une destination touristique fort prisée. On y vient pour une journée de pêche, pour une promenade en barque… On s’installe dans une résidence secondaire ou dans un camping… C’est en bateau que se font les plus belles découvertes. De nombreuses possibilités s’offrent aux visiteurs : canoës, barques à rames ou à moteur bateaux-promenades et nouveauté, les bacôves, qui vous emmènent pour une visite guidée. Le marais se laisse approcher sur ses deux rives.

Résistante à l’eau et indéchirable, une carte du marais* en vente à la Maison du Parc, dans les Offices et Maisons du Tourisme, et chez les principaux prestataires du marais, permet aux visiteurs d’accéder seuls, plus facilement à la centaine de kilomètres de cours d’eau classés Wateringues.

New Escutes and bacôvesContinuing the family boat-building business, Rémy Colin shows visitors around his workshop in Clairmarais. He uses local oak and natural products to make bacôves and escutes, the two types of flat-bottomed boats typical to the wetlands.

The Réserve Naturelle Nationale du Romelaëre in Clairmarais, formerly a prime source of peat which was cut right up to the end of the 19th century, is now a mosaic of lakes and rivers providing a perfect setting for a pleasant walk. A number of trails have been devised to be accessible to all visitors, whether they have hearing or sight disabilities or reduced mobility ; the trails include listening points and a bird-observatory. Special signs and aids (plaques in Braille, life-lines, studded paths) have been installed all along the trail as well as bench seats.

Located near to the nature reserve and the Rihoult-Clairmarais forest, the Grange Nature offers information and advice about the animal and plant life of the wetlands and about other protected natural areas of the Pas-de-Calais. It also organizes educational visits for school groups. Close to the Grange Nature, an educational garden has been planted, with an insect lodge, play area, musical instruments made from natural components and a transparent hive for observing the life of bees…

The unspoilt scenery and tranquillity of the place have attracted tourists to the Audomarois marshes for many years. It is a favourite spot for fishing or boating. Holiday homes and campsites abound, but it is by boat that the wetlands can be seen at their best. Visitors have a wide choice of craft at their disposal : canoes, rowing boats, motor boats or launches, and new this year, flat-bottomed punts offering guided tours. Both sides of the marshes are accessible.

A waterproof, tear-proof map of the wetlands is on sale at the Maison du Parc, Tourist Offices and Maisons and at all the main tourist outlets in the marshes, is available to enable visitors to cruise at their leisure around the hundred-odd kilometres of waterways or Wateringues.

In het Nationale Natuurreservaat van Romelaëre in Clairmarais is tot het eind van de 19de eeuw turf gestoken. Tegenwoordig is dit gebied met meertjes en riviertjes een verademing voor de wandelaar. De paden leiden valide bezoekers, slechtzienden, slechthorenden en rolstoelrijders naar luisterzones en een vogelobservatiehut. Voor iedereen zijn markeringen aangebracht (brailleplaten, blinden- stokgeleider, eiken plankenpad met knopspijkers) en langs het hele pad staan banken.

Het bezoekerscentrum Grange Nature ligt bij het natuurreservaat en het Rihoult-Clairamarais bos. In het bezoekerscentrum ‘La Grange Nature’ vindt u informatie over de fauna en flora van de polders maar ook over andere kwetsbare natuurgebieden van de Pas-de-Calais. Voor kinderen worden workshops georganiseerd. Bij de Grange Nature is een educatieve tuin aangelegd met een voor insecten-‘hotel’, spelletjes, muziekinstrumenten uit natuurlijke materialen en een kijk-bijenkorf omhet leven van bijen te observeren…

Een idyllisch landschap, rust en ontspanning… de Audomarois polder is sinds lang een geliefde toeristische bestemming. Een dagje vissen, een boottochtje maken, overnachten op een camping of in een vakantiehuisje… De mooiste ontdekkingen doet u per boot. Bezoekers hebben ruime keuze : kano’s, roei- of motorboten, rondvaartboten en dit jaar ook rondvaarten op traditionele houten boten.

Met de « Carte du marais » waterkaart te koop bij het Maison du Parc, de bureaus voor toerisme en de watersportbedrijven in het gebied, kunt u het gebied met honderd kilometer aan sloten en kanaaltjes zelf ontdekken.

Qu’il s’agisse de gobelets colorés, de flûtes élancées ou de verres à pied raffinés, en entrant dans le cœur de l’usine d’Arques, le visiteur découvre, à la lueur du verre en fusion, un univers insoupçonné.

1H30 de découverteLa visite débute par une immersion dans le passé. Au sein d’une salle spécialement aménagée, vous revivez la fabrication artisanale du verre soufflé bouche, et redécouvrez de nombreux articles qui ont peuplé les étagères de nos grand-mères ! Accompagnée par un guide, la visite se poursuit au rythme de documents audiovisuels, permettant d’appréhender le fonctionnement d’un grand groupe international et de comprendre les secrets de la fabrication du verre.

C’est sur le terrain, au sein du site de production et sur une passerelle surplombant les machines, que vous accédez à l’ensemble du processus de fabrication, de la goutte de verre en fusion à l’article emballé. Une découverte inoubliable !

From mid-October to mid-November, the Arc Decoration factory shop erects a tent inside which takes place a massive sale of glassware, attracting thousands of bargain-hunters each year.

Like a town within a town, the glass production site of ARC International is impressive by its sheer size and omnipresence in the Saint-Omer region. Although its secrets are closely guarded inside the production buildings… since 1998 ARC International has opened its doors to visitors. On entering the factory in Arques, you discover a completely new world, lit by the glimmer of molten glass being transformed into coloured goblets, elegant champagne flutes or smart stemmed glasses.

90 minutes tourThe tour begins by plunging visitors back into the past. Against the backdrop of a bygone era, you will see how glass used to be blown and discover the many articles that used to fill our grandmothers’ cupboards. Accompanied by a guide, the tour is punctuated with audiovisual documents explaining how this major international group operates and the secrets of glass-making.

Right in the heart of the production shop, from a catwalk looking down onto the machines, you will see the entire production process, from the drop of molten glass to the packaged article. A truly unforgettable visit!

You can also discover the whole range of products in the Arc Décoration factory shop. What’s more, visitors to ARC International are entitled to discount on certain items in the factory shop. Don’t miss this chance to take home a souvenir of your visit!

Een echte stad in de stad. De glasfabriek van ARC International is indrukwekkend groot en overal aanwezig in de streek van Saint-Omer... Van de industriële gebouwen komt niets naar buiten...alhoewel... sinds 1998 opent ARC International zijn deuren voor publiek. Of het nu gaat om gekleurde bekers, fijne champagneglazen, of sierlijke voetglazen als de bezoeker de fabriek van Arques binnengaat ontdekt hij bij het schijnsel van gesmolten glas, een onvermoede wereld.

1.30 uur ontdekkenDe rondleiding begint met een duik in het verleden. In een speciaal ingerichte ruimte hoort u over de ambachtelijke productie van geblazen glas en ontdekt u vele voorwerpen die de kasten van onze grootmoeders vulden! De gids vertelt u m.b.v. audiovisuele documenten over het functioneren van een internationaal bedrijf en helpt u de geheimen van de glasproductie begrijpen.

Vervolgens gaat u op een loopbrug boven de machines de fabriek in en ziet u de wereld van het fabricatieproces, van de gloeiende glasdruppel tot de ingepakte artikelen. Een onvergetelijk bezoek!

U kunt ook het hele scala van artikelen ontdekken en de deuren van de winkel Arc Décoration openduwen. Als u ARC International bezoekt krijgt u overigens korting (onder voorwaarden) in de winkel ARC Décoration. Van de productie tot de aankoop is maar een klein stapje!

A trading town


Savant dosage de seigle, d’avoine et d’orge maltée, agrémenté de baies du genévrier qui lui donnent son nom, le genièvre est riche de tous les parfums champêtres du Nord. Celui de Houlle est classé parmi les meilleurs, et a l’adhésion de tous les gourmets. Fondée en 1812, la genièvrerie est l’une des deux dernières encore existantes en France. La famille Persyn, qui la dirige depuis 1944, veille au grain, et vous invite à approcher les secrets de fabrication artisanale de cette eau-de-vie, typique de la Flandre.

Le talent du Pays de Saint-Omer s’exprime aussi chez d’autres « créateurs de goûts ». Au cœur de la ville de Saint-Omer, la Brasserie de Saint-Omer perpétue depuis 1866 le savoir-faire des maîtres brasseurs. Rue Louis Martel, la Micro-Brasserie L’Audomaroise élabore des bières spéciales, parfumées à la chicorée, à la cerise…

Les cafés Boulet Coq Primé à Blendecques présentent quant à eux leur atelier artisanal de torréfaction, où ils révèlent comment naissent les différents arômes.

Huit exploitants du Pays de Saint-Omer accueillent le public et proposent la vente directe de leurs produits issus de la ferme : le fromage « le Batistin » à Tatinghem, les glaces et sorbets à Enquin-les-Mines, le cresson et le jus de fruits artisanal à Tilques, les terrines et confits de cerfs à Alquines, les fruits, les légumes de saison et les produits laitiers à Fléchin et Saint-Omer. Adhérant pour la plupart aux réseaux « Bienvenue à la Ferme » ou « Savoir Vert », ils s’engagent à une qualité d’accueil et à une découverte attractive de la ferme et des produits agricoles.

Juniper gin, or genièvre, a careful blend of malted rye, oats and barley, flavoured with juniper berries (hence its name), contains all the scents of the northern French countryside. The genièvre distilled in Houlle is classed as one of the best and is acclaimed by all gourmets. Founded in 1812, the genièvre distillery is one of the last two still in existence in France. The Persyn family, who have been operating it since 1944, invite you to discover how this traditional Flemish spirit is made.

The Saint-Omer region boasts many other creators of fine tastes. In the centre of Saint-Omer, the Brasserie de Saint-Omer has perpetuated the know-how of the master brewers since 1866. L’Audomaroise Microbrewery in Rue Louis Martel brews special beers flavoured with chicory, cherry, etc.

Cafés Boulet Coq Primé in Blendecques all have their own artisanal torrefaction shop where they explain how the different aromas are developed from the coffee beans.

There are eight farms in the Pays de Saint-Omer open to the public for the sale of their produce: “le Batistin” cheese in Tatinghem, ice creams and sorbets in Enquin-les-Mines, watercress and artisanal fruit juices in Tilques, venison terrines and preserves in Alquines, fruits and vegetables and dairy produce in Féchin and Saint-Omer. Most of them are members of the “Bienvenue à la Ferme” or “Savoir Vert” networks and are committed to maintaining high standards in the promotion of their farms and farm produce.

De jenever uit Houlle is één van de meest smaakvolle en die fijnproevers meteen herkennen. De jeneverstokerij, opgericht in 1812, is één van de twee laatste in Frankrijk. De familie Persyn, die het bedrijf sinds 1944 leidt, neemt u mee langs de geheimen van de ambachtelijke productie van deze typische Vlaamse sterke drank.

Het talent van het Land van Saint-Omer vindt u ook bij andere « smaakmakers ». De vaardigheden van de meesterbrouwers worden sinds 1866 in de « Brasserie de Saint-Omer » uitgeoefend. De minibrouwerij l’Audomaroise in de rue Louis Martel brouwt bier met bijzondere smaken: kersen, cichoree enz…

De koffiebranderijen Boulet Coq Primé in Blendecques en laten u de ambachtelijke branderijen zien en vertellen u over het ontstaan van de verschillende aroma’s.

U kunt op acht boerderijen van het Land van Saint-Omer een kijkje nemen en producten van het kopen: « Batistin »-kaas in Tatinghem, ijs in Enquin-les-Mines, Waterkers en ambachtelijke vruchtensappen in Tilques, hertenpaté in Alquines, fruit, groente en melkproducten in Fléchin en Saint-Omer. De bedrijven maken bijna allemaal deel uit van één van de netwerken « Bienvenue à la Ferme » of « Savoir vert » waarmee zij aangeven voor een goede ontvangst te willen zorgen en uitleg te geven over het boerenbedrijf en de producten.

A trading town


Le charme de la région de Fauquembergues, traversée par la Lys et l’Aa, lui vient de ses vallons verdoyants, qui dévoilent un habitat traditionnel. Les Moulins à eau (Renty, Dennebroeucq, Enquin-les-Mines, etc.), les châteaux de Bomy et de Saint-Martin d’Hardinghem témoignent du riche passé du canton.

Dès février 2011, implantée à proximité du Parc éolien de la Haute Lys, Enerlya, la Maison des Energies Renouvelables, sera un lieu de sensibilisation citoyen. Grâce à un parcours interactif, petits et grands découvriront les énergies naturelles : le vent, le soleil, l’eau, la biomasse…avec des démonstrations de dispositifs de production : éoliennes domestiques, capteurs photovoltaïques, microcentrales… Après la visite, un sentier de randonnée « les chemins du vent » emmènera les promeneurs au pied des éoliennes.

Situé à Dennebroeucq, en bordure de la Lys, le parc d’attractions Dennlys Parc se développe depuis plus de 20 ans avec un mot d’ordre : divertir ensemble petits et grands. Pour profiter de la vingtaine d’attractions, les enfants courront du « Denno Copter » aux « Montgolfières », assisteront au spectacle de magie avant d’embarquer à grande vitesse à bord du « Furio ». Les plus téméraires affronteront les rapides de la « Crazy River » ou prendront part à une course effrénée à bord des chariots survitaminés du « Nitro ». Cette année, les allées du parc ont été réaménagées et 4 nouvelles attractions familiales implantées.

A Thiembronne, le Circuit de la Vilaine offre lui aussi des sensations fortes, en quad, sur un circuit ou en randonnée accompagnée, et depuis 2010, avec la création d’un parcours de paint-ball.

The Fauquembergues region owes its charm to its green rolling countryside crossed by the Lys and Aa rivers and traditional houses nestling in the valleys. From February 2011, Enerlya, the Renewable Energy Centre located near to the Haute Lys wind farm aims to raise public awareness. The interactive tour will allow visitors of all ages to learn about natural energy sources such as wind, sun, water or biomass, with demonstrations of energy producing systems: domestic wind turbines, photovoltaic solar panels, micro-power generators, etc. After the tour, visitors can follow a trail around the wind farm.

Dennlys Parc, an amusement park in Dennebroeucq situated along the Lys river, has been developing steadily for over 20 years with one main aim: to provide fun and amusement for all ages. There are around twenty rides to discover and enjoy, including the «Denno Copter» and «Hot Air Balloons», as well as a magic show and the ever-popular «Furio» rollercoaster train ride. Those who are looking for the biggest thrills will head for the rapids of the «Crazy River» or take part in a mad race on board the «Nitro». This year the park has refurbished its walkways and added 4 new attractions for family fun.

In Thiembronne, the Circuit de la Vilaine offers lots of family fun with its quad trails or circuit, and since 2010, its paint-ball track.

Vanaf februari 2011 wordt vlakbij het windmolenpark van de Hoge Leie het Huis voor Duurzame Energievormen met de naam Enerlya geopend. Groot en klein kunnen interactief de natuurlijke energiebronnen ontdekken: wind, zon, water en biomassa… en de installaties voor productie ervan: windmolens, zonnecellen, microcentrales… Na het bezoek kunt u over de “wind paden” langs de windmolens lopen.

Langs de Leie bij het plaatsje Dennebroeucq ligt het attractiepark Dennlys Parc. Al twintig jaar lang doen de eigenaars er alles aan om oud en jong samen een gezellige dag bezorgen. De kinderen rennen van de ene attractie naar de andere om ze alle twintig te proberen: van de « Denno Copter » naar de « Luchtbalonnen », van de tovenaarsvoorstelling naar de snelle « Furio »trein. Waaghalzen proberen de snelle afdaling op de « Crazy River » of een race met de supersnelle « Nitro » wagentjes. Dit jaar zijn er vier nieuwe attracties uit te proberen.

Op het Circuit de la Vilaine in Thiembronne kunt u een adrenalinestoot krijgen door een quad te huren voor een tocht met een gids of een rit over het circuit. Paintball terrain sinds 2010.

Au cœur du Parc Naturel Régional des Caps et Marais d’Opale, le Pays de Lumbres offre dans un environnement protégé, par-delà les vallons ou au fil de l’Aa, une diversité d’activités : balades pittoresques, randonnées, découverte des savoir - faire, sport et détente. Deux sites aménagés en Réserves Naturelles Volontaires : les coteaux calcaires d’Elnes et de Wavrans-sur-l’Aa, et la Poudrerie d’Esquerdes soulignent le caractère remarquable de sa faune et sa flore.

Les espaces naturels y sont de grande qualité : la Réserve Naturelle Nationale de la grotte et des pelouses d’Acquin-Westbécourt, les coteaux calcaires d’Elnes et de Wavrans-sur-l’Aa, la première Réserve Naturelle Régionale à vocation géologique des anciennes carrières de Cléty, répertoriées à l’inventaire des Sites Géologiques Remarquables du Nord-Pas-de-Calais, et la Réserve Naturelle Volontaire de la Poudrerie d’Esquerdes.

Au départ de Nielles-les-Bléquin, les amateurs de détente active pédalent sur d’anciennes voies ferrées dédiées désormais aux « Rando-Rail ». Deux parcours de 9 km aller-retour chacun, proposent une aventure conviviale, en forêt ou en plaine ouverte sur les collines d’Artois. Circulant entre les gares de Lumbres et d’Arques, le chemin de fer touristique de la vallée de l’Aa offre une balade insolite à bord du Picasso, autorail rouge et crème des années 50 (voir pages 18-19 de ce guide). La promenade peut se prolonger par de belles randonnées pédestres, équestres ou à vélo, ou encore par une chasse au trésor au cœur d’une campagne paisible.

La vallée de l’Aa, petit fleuve côtier en deux lettres, bien connu des cruciverbistes, est le berceau d’une activité papetière depuis le XVème siècle. Aujourd’hui encore, à quelques kilomètres des entreprises papetières les plus modernes, un atelier de fabrication artisanale fonctionne au rythme d’une roue à aubes. Page après page, la Maison du Papier à Esquerdes retrace la passionnante histoire du papier, et invite chacun à réaliser sa propre feuille de papier.

In the heart of the Parc Naturel Régional des Caps et Marais d’Opale, the Pays de Lumbres, a protected natural environment, offers a great variety of activities in and around the Aa valley: picturesque walks, long distance footpaths, local craft museums, sports and leisure activities… Two nature conservation areas, the chalk hills of Elnes and Wavrans-sur-l’Aa, and the old Esquerdes gunpowder quarries, illustrate the remarkable plant and wildlife to be found in the area.

High standard of sites of special geological or wildlife interest: The caves and meadows of Acquin-Westbécourt, designated a National Nature Reserve, the chalk hills of Elnes and Wavrans-sur-l’Aa, the disused quarries of Cléty, designated the First Regional Nature Reserve of geological interest and listed as one of the Nord-Pas de Calais’ Remarkable Geological sites, and the Voluntary Nature Reserve of the old Esquerdes Gunpowder works.

For those looking for some active fun, the « Rando-Rail » starting from Nielles-les-Bléquin is an amusing way to pedal along the old railway line. There are two different round trips, each 9 km long, taking in woodlands and the open countryside of the Artois hills. Between Lumbres and Arques stations, enjoy a train ride with a retro atmosphere on board the Picasso, the red and cream coloured fifties auto-rail tourist train (see pages 18-19 of this guide). This peaceful corner of the countryside offers many walks, horse-riding or bike trails, and treasure hunts can be arranged.

The Aa valley, the two-lettered coastal river well known to crossword enthusiasts, is the seat of a paper-making industry that goes back to the 15th century. Just a few kilometres from the most state-of-the-art paper mills, paper is still made using traditional machinery, powered by a watermill. One page at a time, the Maison du Papier in Esquerdes retraces the wonderful story of paper and invites visitors to try their hand at making their own sheet of paper.

In het Land van Lumbres, in de beschermde omgeving van het Natuurpark « Caps et Marais d’Opale », op de heuvels of langs de Aa vindt u een breed scala van activiteiten: idyllische wandelingen, trektochten, ambachten, sport en ontspanning. Twee gebieden zijn aangelegd als natuurreservaat met een opmerkelijke fauna en flora: de kalkhellingen van de Elnes en van Wavrans-sur-l’Aa en het terrein van de kruitfabriek van Esquerdes.

Hier vindt u buitengewone natuurgebieden: Het Rijksnatuurreservaat van de grot en grasvelden van Acquin-Westbécourt, de Kalkhellingen van Elnes en Wavrans-sur-l’Aa, het 1ste Regionale Natuurreservaat met geologische roeping in Cléty en het Natuurreservaat van de vroegere Kruitfabriek van Esquerdes.

Vanaf Nielles-les-Bléquin fietsen de liefhebbers van actieve ontspanning tegenwoordig met de « Rando-Rail ». Een gezellig avontuur over twee routes van elk 9 km, door het bos of het open veld over de heuvels van de Artois. Het toeristische treintje van het Aa-dal rijdt tussen de stationnetjes van Lumbres en Arques, een verrassende rit aan boord van de Picasso, de beige-rode trein uit de ’50 jaren (pags 18-19 van deze gids). Als aansluiting op de wandeling kunt u de vredige landelijke omgeving te voet, te paard of met de fiets ontdekken of schatzoeken.

Het dal van de Aa, kustriviertje bekend bij kruiswoordpuzzelaars, is sinds de 15de eeuw de bakermat van de productie van papier. Ook nu nog werkt een werkplaats, op steenworp van de meest moderne papierfabrieken, op het ritme van een waterrad. Het Maison du Papier in Esquerdes beschrijft blad voor blad de interessante geschiedenis van papier en nodigt elke bezoeker uit om een blad papier te trekken.
