Skills and energy training for the future– Durham College’s Whitby campus

At Durham College, we are committedto training the future green leaders oftomorrow through leading-edgeprograms linked to the growing demandfor a trained workforce in the areas ofsustainability and renewable energy.This includes the more than $30 millionthree-phase expansion project happeningat our Whitby campus, which saw usintroduce our Energy Audit Techniquesand Renewable Energy Technicianprograms during Phase 1.

Ontario also continues to face an estimatedshortfall of more than 350,000 skilledworkers by 2025. Through Phase 2 of ourexpansion, we are positioning ourselves tocombat this job shortage by increasing theshop area by 20,000 square feet andintroducing new programs in areas such aspower engineering technology, sustainableenergy, biomass energy, building tradesand technology, metal fabricator, carpenter,steamfitter and construction millwright.

At present time, more than 20,000registered apprentices have completedvarious levels of in-school apprenticeshiptraining in the construction,manufacturing and transportation sectorsat our Whitby campus – including morethan 12,000 in the last seven years.Together they collectively representOntario’s next generation of skilledtradespeople.

An increased focus on the use ofclean energy for the development of ahealthier and more sustainableenvironment to live and work in ismore important than ever.

Exercising your body is as important as exercising your mind andthanks to Durham College’s world-class facilities, award-winningvarsity athletics program and extensive intramural sports leagues,you can do both right on campus while having access to first-classathletic scholarships!

The CRWC is one of the best athleticfacilities in the country and includes:• A 28,000-sq.-ft. triple gym;

• A 10,000-sq.-ft. fitness centre;

• Two 900-sq.-ft. aerobic/dance studios;

• Two squash courts;

• An elevated indoor walking/joggingtrack overlooking the gymnasium;

• An athletic therapy centre;

• A multi-purpose lounge; and

• Student sports club office space.

It also houses the Campus Health Centre,which provides a mix of health andwellness services including:

• A medical clinic featuring extendedhours of service and on-site doctors,nurses and counselling services;

• A full-service pharmacy; and

• A variety of alternative health servicesincluding massage therapy,physiotherapy, acupuncture, nutritionalcounselling and chiropractic andorthotic services.

Can’t get enough sports? We offer:

When it comes to the studentexperience, we feel that whathappens outside the classroom isjust as important as what happensinside. With that, we arecommitted to attracting andretaining students who reflect ourinstitutional values and those ofour community including theimportance of having respect forothers and the creation of apositive relationship betweenstudents, faculty, staff,administration and the community.

Our Student Rights and Responsibilitiesdepartment, housed within our Office ofCampus Safety and Security, is a greatexample of our ideals. Designed toprotect the rights of everyone on campus,its goal is to sustain an environment ofinclusiveness that will empower you toachieve your highest potential. This goalis also supported through the manyinitiatives directed by our Diversity office,which helps ensure we sustain a positive,multicultural campus.

The safety and security of everyone oncampus is also an important priority andto that end, our Office of Campus Safetyand Security has several safety strategiesin place. This includes uniformed securitypersonnel who routinely patrol thecampus; 24-hour security presence atthe main desk of the Gordon Willeybuilding at the Oshawa campus; codeblue stations in all parking lots thatprovide direct contact to security; andclosed-circuit television cameras locatedthroughout campus. We also offer theCampus Walk program, which providesescorts to and from your car on campus.

° Your Student AssociationYour Student Association (Your SA) playsan active and important role in theinterest of all students. It reflects thevalues of communication, inclusiveness,representation, spirit and success in allthat it does. It holds numerous on- andoff-campus events and is responsible foradministering programs such as the foodbank, student insurance plan and theUniversal Transit Pass (U-Pass).

In addition, Your SA is responsible formanaging the many student groups thatoperate on campus. A world of diversityand much more is represented by morethan 75 student groups ranging fromsports and culture to hobbies andeverything in between. Chances are you’llfind something that suits your interestsand if you don’t see a club that works foryou, go ahead and start one of your own!

° Women’s CentreThe Women’s Centre offers a safe havenfor female students including providingconfidential counselling and assistance inabusive situations. It also hosts numerousevents on campus including Break theSilence Day, an event protesting violenceagainst women, and an annual memorialceremony to mark the National Day ofRemembrance and Action on ViolenceAgainst Women.

° The RiotThe Riot campus radio station isknown as the students' voice on campus.It entertains, educates and updates thecampus community and surroundingregion. Airing live from the MarketplaceCafeteria in the Gordon Willey buildingat the Oshawa campus, the stationbroadcasts all Durham College homevarsity sports games live and alsoreports on breaking news, weatherconditions and more.

• In January 2010, Kathleen Stewart was named a top20 finalist in TVO’s Best Lecturer Competition;

• Lon Appleby presented the college’s first virtual global lecture inApril 2010;

• School of Media, Art & Design Professor Barb Suen wasinstrumental in bringing an Ontario Chinese ArtistsAssociation exhibit to campus including the donation ofseveral pieces of art to campus;

Sometimes your finances are the only thing standing between you and youreducational goal, which is why the Financial Aid and Awards office at DurhamCollege offers substantial bursary, scholarship and emergency aid programs tostudents with a demonstrated financial need.

The office helps you understand thevariety of financial aid options available tohelp fund your education includingparental resources, student grants/loansfrom the Ontario Student AssistanceProgram (OSAP), student lines of credit,bursaries, scholarships, emergency aidprograms for students with a demonstratedfinancial need and on- and off-campusemployment.

In addition, thanks to the generosity ofdonors in the community and beyond,there are a variety of bursaries and otherstudent awards available to you if you arein financial need and have good academic

records. OSAP and the Canada StudentLoans and Grants program also providefinancial assistance to qualified students.

° How the U-Pass worksAs a full-time Durham College student, you have unlimitedfree use of any Durham Region Transit bus(www.durhamregiontransit.com) or GO Transit bus(www.gotransit.com) operating in Durham Region during theacademic year. All you have to do is show your Campus IDcard, which acts as your U-Pass, to the bus driver.
