Washington, D.C.Washington, D.C.The National Mall is usually the center of every visitor’s trip to Washington DC. This tree-lined area of parkland stretches two and a half miles from the Potomac River to the United States Capitol on Capitol Hill and is adjoined by the White House. At one end of the National Mall, known as West Potomac Park, the Lincoln Memorial faces the Refl ecting Pool with a good view of Arlington Memorial Bridge, Constitution Gardens, the Tidal Basin and the Washington Monument. Further towards Capitol Hill are a number of museums and galleries, among which are many of the Smithsonian Institution’s museums, including the National Museum of Natural History, the National Air and Space Museum, National Museum of the American Indian, and the Smithsonian Institution building.

Situated within the northwest quadrant of Washington, D.C., American University’s traditional-style campus has much to offer students in the way of comfort, modern conveniences, and quick, easy access to city life.

Our 84-acre, tree-lined campus, which was designated as a National Arboretum, is located at the top of Embassy Row in one of the most attractive, safe, and residential areas of our nation’s capital.

The center of campus, also referred to as “the quad,” is a focal point of student life not only because our academic buildings line its grassy borders, but also because it’s a place to meet-and-greet with friends and student groups, catch an impromptu game of ultimate frisbee or take part in an after-class debrief with professors.

Another favorite spot on campus is the beach volleyball pit located between the athletics fi elds. The adjacent grassy hillside is also a well known hangout for students on game days.

AcademicAcademicSupportSupport

The academic support program for student-athletes, a collaboration between the Academic Support Center and the Department of Athletics, assists student-athletes in successfully attaining academic goals and creating a balance between academics and athletics. The program serves to promote responsibility and initiative while encouraging student-athletes to take advantage of the rich resources offered at American University.

Academic counselors work with student-athletes on skills needed for success in the classroom, and provide information about educational options, university and NCAA requirements, as well as policies and procedures. The program focuses on the development of the total person through individual meetings, study hall and tutoring, and life skills workshops. AU’s academic support program coordinates with faculty, advisors, and coaches to support each student-athlete.

American University Head Field Hockey Coach Steve Jennings served as an assistant coach to the United States Women’s Field Hockey Team at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. The team, which was comprised entirely of fi rst-time Olympians, completed pool play in fourth place with a record of one win, one loss and three draws. They fi nished in eighth place overall at the 2008 Olympic Games.

Jennings has also participated in the Olympics as an athlete, serving as the vice captain to the men’s fi eld hockey team at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

“The Olympic Games in Beijing were an incredible experience -- both as an opportunity to compete against the world’s best in the biggest arena sport has to offer and as a culmination of years of intense training and preparation. From the lighting of the Olympic torch in the Birds Nest to the atmosphere in the Olympic village to the daily chance to play and coach the game at its highest level, the games were a total thrill. While we did not leave China with a medal around our necks, an entire team without Olympic experience embraced the true spirit of the moment -- while other teams played it safe, we played to win -- each and every game. In the end, the team’s efforts made all of us, and hopefully an entire nation, proud.”

American University hosted a fi ve-game test series pitting USA Field Hockey against Argentina’s Las Leonas at Jacobs Field, May 13-19. American Head Coach Steve Jennings patrolled the sideline for the U.S., reassuming his role as an assistant coach with USA Field Hockey. Jennings has worked with the national team since 2002 and in 2008 was a member of the Olympic coaching staff.

Eight members of the 2008 U.S. Olympic Team competed in the test series, including team captains Carrie Lingo and Amy Tran, who is considered to be one of the top goalkeepers in the world. The U.S. roster also included Kayla Bashore, Rachel Dawson and Keli Smith.

Las Leonas won the bronze medal at the 2008 Olympics and won the 2010 Women’s World Cup. Led by Luciana Aymar, who is widely considered to be the best player in the world, Las Leonas is currently ranked fi rst in the ABN-AMRO World Hockey Team Rankings.

“Hosting the USA and Argentina National Team at American was a phenomenal experience for the entire campus community. To have the best players in the world demonstrating how our sport can be played was a great thrill for the thousands of spectators that turned out to witness the test match series. In particular, the close proximity and access to these elite athletes gave inspiration to our team and all the many young women who found great role models to aspire to become.”

Steve Jennings has been a well-known fi gure in national and international fi eld hockey for two decades both as a coach and player, including serving as a coach on the 2008 United States Olympic Field Hockey Team.

Jennings is entering his 13th season as the head coach at American, where he has amassed a 163-76 (.682) career record. Under Jennings’ leadership, the Eagles have claimed an unprecedented eight consecutive Patriot League Championships and has appeared in seven of the last eight NCAA Tournament’s. Jennings has been named Patriot League Coach of the Year seven times, including each of the past six seasons.

Living the Olympic Dream

Prior to the 2008 fi eld hockey season, Jennings performed on fi eld hockey’s grandest stage – the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. He served as assistant coach for the U.S. National Women’s Field Hockey Team, which captured eighth place in the event.

Jennings helped guide the U.S. team to a 6-0 record in winning the Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Kazan, Russia. In the title match, the U.S. team defeated Belgium 3-1 to clinch a berth to Beijing.

“Being involved in the Olympic team is such a tremendous honor – defi nitely a peak life experience that is hard to put into words,” Jennings said. “In the end, it meant getting a chance to see if you can be the absolute best and the power of being surrounded by people who have given literally everything they have to be there.”

International Coaching Experience

In addition to the Beijing Olympics, Jennings has assisted in two World Cups, helping the U.S. in 2002 to a ninth place fi nish in Perth, Australia and earning a sixth place fi nish

in 2006 in Madrid, Spain. At the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Jennings helped the U.S. earn a

silver medal after falling to No. 2 world-ranked Argentina 4-2 in the title match. An international coaching career that began in 2000 has also seen him travel with the national program to Holland, Germany, New Zealand, India, Argentina, Chile, Japan, Bermuda, England and

Italy.

Jennings holds a Level III coaching certifi cation – the highest level for fi eld hockey in the United States. In May 2008, he became the fi rst U.S. citizen to be awarded the title of FIH Coach – High Performance after an FIH fi nals course held in conjunction with the Champions Trophy in Monchengladbach, Germany.

2010: Another Patriot League Championship

The 2010 season was another stellar campaign for Jennings’ Eagles as American claimed its eighth straight Patriot League Championship with a 6-2 victory over Lafayette. The Eagles went on to defeat Kent State 2-1 in the NCAA Play-In Game to earn a trip to the NCAA Tournament Round of 16, where they fell to

Connecticut in a sudden victory penalty stroke off, 3-2.

In addition to the team’s success, many of Jennings’ student-athletes took home individual honors for their efforts during the 2010 season. Senior Christine Fingerhuth was named a

The American University fi eld hockey team was ranked 10th in the 2011 Kookaburra / NFHCA Division I Preseason Poll and fi rst in the 2011 Patriot League Preseason Poll. This marked the fi rst time since 2006 the Eagles have been ranked in the top-10 of the national preseason poll and the eighth consecutive year the team has been tabbed to win the conference.

“It’s an honor to receive these preseason accolades but our team recognizes our goal is to be ranked No. 1 at the end of the year and they know the work they have to put in to get there,” Head Coach Steve Jennings commented. “We had a tremendous spring and have carried that over into the preseason. We learned a lot about out team from our scrimmages against James Madison and Virginia and are excited to begin the season on Friday.”

The Eagles put together one of the best seasons in program history in 2010 and fi nished the campaign ranked ninth in the nation with an 18-4 overall record. American reached the NCAA Tournament for a seventh time in eight seasons, falling to No. 5 UConn 3-2 in a stroke off, after capturing its

eighth straight Patriot League Championship. The team’s 18 wins in 2010 were the third most in program history and included victories over fi ve top-20 teams.

American returns 10 student-athletes from last year’s squad including All-Region selections Gina Hofmann, Tatum Dyer and Shelly Montgomery. Hofmann, Dyer and Natalie Ellenberger will again be looked upon to anchor a defensive unit which ranked fi fth in the nation with a 1.11 goals against average in 2010. The trio also helped American to six shutouts while allowing just 5.05 penalty corners per game.

Montgomery is the team’s top returning goal scorer after registering 10 last year as a freshman. She will be joined in the attacking third by Melissa Casale who has 20 career tallies and notched three game winners a year ago. Jaclyn Anspach and Alex McMackin will

also lend support to American’s attack with Jenn Bradley pushing forward from the midfi eld.

Sophomores Stephanie Burry and Ashley Dalisera are competing for the starting spot in the cage. Burry appeared in three games last season and notched a 1.69 gaa while Dalisera saw time as the team’s stroke specialist.

American has welcomed seven freshmen to this year’s team who have added talent and depth to the roster at all levels. The recruiting class includes forwards Canon Hirschler, Courtney MacPherson and Kati Rothenhoefer, midfi elders Carly Atchison, Rebecca Treharne and Grace Wilson and defender Erica Binzer.
