Charles Alford is many things. He is a Brooklyn native and the

oldest of four boys born to Carlosio Alfronez and Shirley Bowden.

He is the proud father of five children: Charles (23), Brittney (22),

Mikeeya (21), Sanaya (8), Tristen (5) and is grandfather to two

granddaughters Miyanni and Amelia. He is a proud Prince Hall

Mason and a member of Adelphic Union Lodge No. 14.

Alford believes in faith, family, and hard work. He has instilled

those values in his children. Alford’s two older children have

followed in his footsteps and have earned college degrees; the third

oldest is a senior and will soon join her older siblings.

Alford attended Alabama State and Rutgers Universities where he

majored in Marketing and English. He has put his course teachings to use and has worked in the

fields of finance and marketing for almost 20 years. Alford has worked for the New Jersey

Division of Taxation, the Law Offices of Chris Ranieri, and brokerage firm Meyers, Pollack &

Robbins. Currently, Alford is a freelance marketing consultant.

He lives by his favorite quote, “talent is God-given, be humble; fame is man-given, be grateful;

conceit is self-given, be careful." Always there to lend a hand, shoulder or ear, Alford loves his

Masonic family. Alford has faithfully served the Lodge as Senior Steward. He has been a very

active and reliable Brother who can always be counted on by Adelphic Union Lodge No. 14.

Sandino Sanchez is proud for many reasons. He is a proud father of

four, a proud husband, proud of his Dominican heritage and has

been a proud Prince Hall Master Mason since 1996. Throughout

Sandino’s upbringing, lifelong values were instilled in him where

he learned the importance of family, hard work and community.

At 15 his first job was working with kids at a local youth center

and ever since then Sandino has continued his commitment to

improving his community.

He has worked for community based organizations in multiple

management capacities for over 25 years. Sandino served as

Deputy Director for Workforce Development for The Valley, Inc., a

Harlem based youth program; and helped develop the Beacon School and youth development

services for Alianza Dominicana, Inc. Currently, Sandino is utilizing his expertise as the Director

of Contracts and Compliance for The Children’s Aid Society.

One of the tenets of Masonry is charity and Sandino has dedicated his life to empowering our

underserved communities. The Craft has made Sandino’s personal journey much easier. Each

time he reads the Ritual, Sandino learns something new he can apply to his life. Sandino has

learned to be loyal to the teachings of the Craft, to his faith, his family, his Brothers and the

community.

2011 Masonic visionary award . . .

Andrew U. Hammer is a Past Master of Alexandria-Washington

Lodge No. 22, He is a member of the Executive Committee of the

George Washington Masonic Memorial, a member of the Board

of Directors of the Masonic Society, and a Member of the

Philalethes Society. Bro∴ Hammer is a dynamic speaker, and

speaks to lodges throughout the United States and abroad on

observant Masonry, as well as philosophical aspects of the Craft.

Brother Hammer is a Royal Arch Mason, a Scottish Right Mason,

and a member of Allied Masonic Degrees. Additionally, Brother

Hammer is a member of the Philalethes Society and the Quatuor

Coronati Correspondence Society. Professionally Brother Hammer

is a an international political consultant having taken part in

projects and campaigns on four continents.

Author of Observing the Craft: The Pursuit of Excellence in Masonic Labour and Observance, the book is a manifesto of sorts for the observant Mason, who seeks quality over quantity in

every aspect of Freemasonry. It is a stringent argument for the Symbolic Lodge as being the

whole of Masonry, calling for nothing but the utmost effort and commitment to be put into the

operation of a Masonic lodge and its meetings.

2011 master mason of the year award . . .

Ravi R. Rampersaud is a Bronx, New York native with a passion

for community service. His work with domestic and international

community based organizations has led him to build schools in

Kenya; work with Project Greenbelt to provide civic education,

advocacy, indigenous tree planting, food security, eco-safaris, and

the promotion of women and change initiatives.

Domestically, Ravi has worked with a range of organizations

including: Part of the Solution (POTS), New York Cares, Habit for

Humanity, and the Safe Horizon Domestic Violence Project to

name a few. From homeless outreach to rebuilding homes, Ravi

continues his outreach as a Brother of Adelphic Union Lodge #14.

Ravi was raised February 23, 2010 and since then has been an active Brother. He describes Ma-

sonry as one of the most pivotal things he has done with his life. “I am a proud Brother of

AUL14, Noble of Medina Temple #19 and 32° Scottish Rite Mason of King David Consistory

#3,” says Ravi. In addition to his Masonic houses, Ravi has the privilege of being the Associate

Librarian of the MWPHGL of New York.

Ravi says, “I have met tons of great Brothers and made some awesome friendships. Masonry has

opened a plethora of opportunities for me and I can’t wait to see what the future holds.”

THE HISTORY OF

A Charter was duly issued to Adelphic Union Lodge No. 7 on the 11th day of May 1863, A.L.

5863, by the United Grand Lodge of the State of New York. The Charter was signed by the

M.W.G.M. Patrick H. Reason, D.G.M. Jonas H. Townsend, S.G.W. Peter W. Ray, J.G.W. John M.

Thomas and John R. Porter, Grand Secretary. This Charter empowered the Lodge to admit,

enter, pass and raise Free Masons within the City of New York., according to the ancient

usage and customs of the Craft.

In its illustrious history, many landmarks have been established in perpetuating the ideals

of Free Masonry among men of color in this Masonic Jurisdiction. On the 18th day of

December 1878, the present Grand Lodge which grew out of the consolidation of the United

and National Compact Grand Lodges re-warranted Adelphic Union with Brother John

Rogers as Worshipful Master. The original Grand Lodge Charter bears the notation

"Cancelled 4th December 1879". The records show that the designation No.7 ceased and

the present No.14 came into being after 1878.

On or about January 14, 1881 the recorded minutes show that the Lodge met twice

monthly at 835 Broadway and George Harris was the Worshipful Master to November 23,

1885. John R. Adkins presided as Worshipful Master from November 1885 to November

22, 1890. During this administration it is noted that there was a fine spirit of cooperation

among the few existing Lodges. There were frequent visits from Boyer No. 1, Hiram No. 4,

Celestial No. 3, Mt. Olive No. 2, Widows Son No. 11, and Cornerstone No. 37. The visiting

brothers then as today took an active part in working of the various degrees.

AUL14 has many reasons to be proud of its achievements. The Lodge has fully cooperated

in all phases of Grand Lodge activities and in many instances led the way for the benefit of

the Craft. One of AUL14’s most noteworthy achievements is the introduction of men into

the Craft who have distinguished themselves not only in community life but have risen

from the rank of Entered Apprentice to the honored office of the Most Worshipful Grand

Master.

Page 11: 2011 Annual Banquet Journal

ESTABLISHED May 11, 1863 We are justly proud of the choice made by the Craft’s rank and file to advance three of our

own to the Grand East and appoint a brother of AUL14 to the position of Honorary Grand

Master. Past Grand Master Edward T. Sherwood for three years (1930-1933), Past Grand

Master Dr. Charles H. Griffin (1966-1967), Honorary Past Grand Master Murray Wilkerson,

and Past Grand Master Louis Fair, Jr., who led the Craft for ten years (1942-1951). Through

his ingenuity and hard work, during PGM Fair’s tenure our present Prince Hall Masonic

Temple was obtained as well as the Prince Hall Masonic Resort in upstate Roscoe, New York.

Adelphic Union No.14 has several times participated in community activities which were of

a worthwhile nature. We hold a life membership in the NAACP; developed a partnership

with New York Cares to provide ongoing community service projects throughout New York

City; support L&A Academy located in Accra Ghana with school supplies and much needed

mosquito nets; and many other causes the Brothers of Adelphic Union Lodge No. 14

participate in.

The Lodge continues to initiate intelligent and ambitious men who are anxious to make

a name for themselves in the Masonic world. As they begin their journey into the Craft,

we wish for them every success and may their industrious habits and strict application

to business procure for them a significant place in this Ancient and Noble Fraternity. Our

fervent wish is that the Masonic principles inculcated in the several degrees will inspire us

to greater heights.

Adelphic Union Lodge No. 14 enjoys the distinction of being one of a number of the Lodges

in the Prince Hall Masonic History with over one hundred years of existence. May the Great

Architect of the Universe forever continue to guide our efforts.

Adelphic Union...where Masonry happens!

2011 Worshipful Master Adelphic Union Lodge No. 14

Worshipful Master A message from

Greetings honored guests, Brothers and Sisters of the

Craft and our distinguished honorees. I am thankful that

the Grand Architect of the Universe has seen fit to bring

us here safely tonight to fellowship, to celebrate the

accomplishments of fine members of the Masonic Family,

and to salute Adelphic Union Lodge No.14 (AUL14) for

148 years of Masonry. Through your continued support,

our Lodge will provide scholarships to two deserving

young people.

AUL14 has always stood for the highest exemplification of Masonic tenets; those of brotherly love, charity, and faith. We have always sought to bring into our fold the

wise and the good and I believe we have continued that this year by bringing into our association seven men whom I believe will enhance the bright future AUL14 will experience for years to come. Congrats to our class of 2011!

Adelphic Union has been busy this year. We have hosted visiting Masons from around the world,

have had excellent lectures from such honored speakers as PM Andrew Hammer, Bro. Prescott

Harris and RW Alton Roundtree, to name a few. We have re-dedicated and re-obligated ourselves to

Masonry and each other; honored our Past Masters; done almost all of our own Ritual work; visited

many Lodges; supported the events of several Lodges and Chapters; and after many years returned to

the Roscoe Retreat. Through our actions we worked to let the world see how Masons love one

another. AUL14 has had excellent fellowship at our weekly study class and served a meal at each

monthly collation…and this is only a partial list of our activities this year.

Congratulations to our 2011 Honorees: Bro. Charles Alford, PM Andrew U. Hammer, Bro. Sandino

Sanchez, and Bro. Ravi R. Rampersaud for each is deserving of this recognition. In addition, I would like to thank my Cabinet: SW Gene Edwards, Jr., JW Errol R. Allen, Treasurer

Leo Bazile, Secretary Ravi R. Rampersaud, SD Darryl J. White and JD Sandino Sanchez for their hard

work and dedication. It was an honor to have been blessed with a great group of men to work with

and lead. AUL14 has had a great year because of all our efforts.

Again, thank you for being here and sharing this very important night with us. The Brothers of

AUL14 promise to keep trying to be the best Prince Hall Masons we can and embody the ideals of

our venerable institution.

I REMEMBERED MY CREATOR

IN THE DAYS OF MY YOUTH….

I remembered my Creator in the days of my youth

I lived by the tenets of Brotherly love

relief and truth.

And while the evil days came not nor the years drew nigh

I had pleasure in them, Adelphic Union Lodge #14 and I

While the Sun, or the light, or the moon be not darkened

or the clouds return after the rain

I thank the Great Architect, for suffering no pain

I rose with the sound of the birds as my daughters of music were

brought low; I thank the Great Architect

I watched all my children grow

And when I was afraid of that which is high

You held me Great Architect, I did not cry

Yes, my almond tree did flourish, the grasshopper was a burden

and desire did fail, but the love of my partner ever did prevail

As I go on my long journey home, the silver cord was loosed

and the golden was broken, I leave you my Brothers

with a sign a word and a token

I will stretch forth my hand in a token of friendship

and Brotherly love

Rise my Brothers, follow your conductor and fear no danger

The Great Architect has assured us, He is no stranger

Sleep well tonight, my Brothers there's an Adelphian above.
