special guests James Carville & Mary Matalin
James CarvilleJames “The Ragin’ Cajun” Carville is America’s best-known political consultant. His long list of electoral successes evidences a knack for steering overlooked campaigns to unexpected landslide victories and for re-making political underdogs into upset winners. His streak began in 1986, when he managed the gubernatorial victory of Robert Casey in Pennsylvania. Over the years he helped guide a number of politicians to wins, but his most prominent triumph was in1992 when he helped William Jefferson Clinton clinch the presidency. In recent years, Carville has focused on campaigns in more than 20 countries around the globe, including leading Ehud Barak to victory in his campaign to become the prime minister of Israel in 1999. Carville is also a best-selling author, actor, producer, talk-show host, speaker, and restauranteur. He is a frequent political commentator and contributor on CNN and serves as a professor of practice at Tulane University in New Orleans.

For the past 29 years, John Brantley has guided the growth and success of Raleigh-Durham International Airport. During his time as airport director, RDU has evolved from a mid-sized regional airport to an American Airlines hub to a thriving airport with flights that stretch coast to coast and include several international destinations.
One of the first major projects completed under Brantley’s guidance was a long-range master plan resulting in the construction of the airport’s 10,000-foot runway. One year later, Terminal C was built by American Airlines for its Southeast hub operations. After American pulled out in the mid-1990s, RDU became the base for
John BrantleyDirector Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority
Midway Airlines, which catered to the region’s business travelers. When Midway ceased operations, Brantley and his staff recruited Southwest Airlines, jetBlue, and other carriers to provide more options for area flyers.
Brantley also oversaw the growth in RDU’s operations, from the 11,000-space parking garage between the two airport terminals to the redevelopment of the general aviation area to the construction of the $570 million Terminal 2, which opened in January and is home to 36 gates, six works of art, and nearly 30 shops and restaurants.
Brantley started his aviation career as an airport inspector and planning/project engineer for the Federal Aviation Administration in Atlanta in 1966. In 1969 he became principal airport planner/engineer for Wilbur Smith & Associates in Columbia, SC, and in 1971 worked as vice president and treasurer, Aviation Systems, Inc., Airport Planners and Engineers of Columbia, SC, and Raleigh. Brantley became planning consultant and manager of Airport Development for the Raleigh-Durham Airport Authority in 1977, and he took over his current role as airport director at RDU in 1982.
Brantley has been active in organizations including the Raleigh Kiwanis Club, Raleigh Rescue Mission, North Carolina Airports Association, Airports Council International – North America, Research Triangle Regional Partnership, Wake County Economic Development, Wake County Historical Society, and the North Carolina State University Alumni Association. His list of honors includes Captain of First Flight Award, June 1999, NCDOT; John B. Ross Jr. Leadership Award, July 2000, Greater Raleigh Convention & Visitors Bureau; Triangle Business Journal Businessperson of the Year, 2010; Order of the Long Leaf Pine, May 2011, State of North Carolina, Office of the Governor; and the Lifetime Achievement Award, August 2011, Greater Raleigh Convention & Visitors Bureau.
honored guests
Mayor Charles MeekerCity of RaleighMayor Charles Meeker was first elected to the office in 2001. His five two-year terms as mayor tie him with the late Avery C. Upchurch as Raleigh’s longest-serving mayors. Prior to his election as mayor, he served on the City Council from 1985 – 1989 and from 1991 – 1995.
During Meeker’s 10 years of service as mayor, Raleigh has been widely recognized as one of the best cities in America in which to live, work, and play. Meeker advocated for downtown development, including the reopening of Fayetteville Street to vehicular traffic and construction of the Raleigh Convention Center, the four-star Marriott Hotel that connects to the convention center, City Plaza, and the Raleigh Amphitheater. He is also a supporter of creating a light rail system connecting Raleigh to Durham, Research Triangle Park, and Chapel Hill.
In addition, Meeker has been in the forefront of making Raleigh a leader in sustainability. In his State of the City address on March 14, the mayor said more should be done to make Raleigh an even “greener” city. On April 12, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce awarded Raleigh one of its 2011 Siemens Sustainable Community Awards
for “a range of factors including its commitment to developing a ‘green economy.’” Raleigh was honored as the mid-size community.
An attorney, Meeker is a partner with the firm Parker, Poe, Adams & Bernstein L.L.P. He started work with the predecessor firm of Sanford, Adams, McCullough & Beard in 1975 and became a partner in 1980. He has been active in community affairs in Raleigh since he moved to the area in 1975.
