Dear Friends,The last year has been an active time for the Boys & Girls Clubs. Here are just a few of our most

notable accomplishments:We broke ground on a new facility for the Zebulon Boys & Girls Club. This facility is part of

our “BE THE ONE” capital campaign. We expect the new home for our Zebulon members to

be open in early 2012. It will allow us to serve more children in the Zebulon community and

provide a long-awaited permanent home. Thanks to many for their years of hard work to make

this dream a reality. We were also successful in our annual Positive Place for Kids campaign, which allows us to

serve more than 4,000 children at our seven clubs in the county. Despite continued economic

pressures, we exceeded our $1.2 million goal. Congratulations and thanks to each of you for your

financial support! We promise that every dollar will be spent wisely as we seek to serve more kids

throughout Wake County. We were also honored to have one of our own named the 2010–11 North Carolina Youth of the

Year. Caleb Thomas, a member of the Wake Forest Boys & Girls Club, was awarded this high

honor in April. He continues the long history of the statewide winner being a Wake County Boys

& Girls Clubs member. Thanks to countless volunteers and staff for mentoring and coaching

Caleb as he went through a rigorous evaluation. And congratulations to Caleb for all he has

accomplished. The Clubs continue to make a tremendous difference in the lives of many children in need in

our community. We have a dedicated staff that is committed to the mission of the Clubs. They

give tirelessly of themselves to ensure that every child has an opportunity to reach his or her

full potential. We also have hundreds of volunteers that devote their time, talents and financial

resources to the Clubs. Without such community involvement, the Boys & Girls Clubs could

not be the positive and safe place for our kids to go each and every afternoon.

We are poised for more great accomplishments in the year ahead and hope that you will be with

us each step along the way. With your support and the dedication of our incredible staff, we will

continue to be the place where great futures start.

With sincere thanks,

Academic SuccessBoys & Girls Clubs drives home the importance of education with its members. Club staff set high academic expectations for members and work intensively with youth to help them achieve success. Every day after school Club members have access to youth development professionals and tutors who help them with their homework and ensure they’re prepared for the next school day. The Club’s goal is to help members graduate from high school ready for college,

trade school, the military or employment. The Clubs achieve this through both conventional education and career development programs as well as an arts focused approach. In 2011, every senior who had been involved with

the Club throughout high school

graduated on time. EDUCATION AND CAREER

DEVELOPMENTFinancial literacy is essential to the Boys & Girls Clubs’ education strategy. For example, at the Washington Elementary Boys & Girls Club, high school members learned money management skills that prepare them to become self-sufficient adults. Key staff and vol-unteers introduced teens to budgeting, credit management, online banking, investment, and saving money for college. Teens also explored career planning and used hypothetical salaries to simulate financial independence.

Not only did these exercises strengthen academic skills with cross-overs in math and economics, it gave members practice with real world decision-making—empowering them to make good decisions for their future.

IN WAKE COUNTY THE GRADUATION RATE WAS 80.4% IN THE 2010-11 SCHOOL YEAR. AT OUR BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS WE HAVE A 100% GRADUATION RATE FOR MEMBERS INVOLVED 4 OR MORE YEARS.

THE ARTSArt programming is central to the education curriculum at the Boys &

Girls Clubs. This year the Brentwood Boys & Girls Club collaborated with Artspace—a private non-profit visual arts space—to create a three

dimensional, interactive mural. Club members worked under the guidance of Garrett Scales and Georges LeChevallier. These

professional artists encouraged Brentwood members to ex-plore their multiculturalism and individuality through self-

portraiture using many fine art techniques. The mural remained on display at Artspace for several high-pro-file art exhibits in recognition of the Brentwood Boys

& Girls Club members and artists’ work.

Character & CitizenshipGood character and citizenship is another priority at the Boys & Girls Clubs. A high degree of community involvement and voter registration are indicators of good character and a sense of citizenship in our club members. These traits are the focus of the Youth of the Year program. Youth of the Year is a Boys & Girls Clubs of America competition in which teens work one-on-one with adult mentors to compete at the local, state, regional, and national level to be named the Boys & Girls Clubs “Youth of the Year” and win corresponding college scholarships. Being named Youth of the Year is the highest form of recognition in the Boys & Girls Clubs and a goal that thou-sands of Club members aspire to.

TWO YEARS IN A ROWFor the second consecutive year, a member from the

Wake County Boys & Girls Clubs has had the honor of being named the North Carolina Youth of the Year. Caleb Thomas—now a freshmen pursuing Dentistry at East Carolina Univer-

sity—is an exceptional teen who demonstrates what can be achieved by taking advantage

of the opportunities the Club offers.

To prove himself a competitive candi-date, Caleb showcased excellent com-munication skills, positive self-esteem, community stewardship, and capac-ity for leadership; skills he worked towards in his time spent after school and over the summer at the Wake Forest Boys & Girls Club.

IN WAKE COUNTY 2,210 YOUTH HAD TROUBLE WITH THE LAW IN 2010.AT OUR BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS WE KEEP KIDS POSITIVELY INVOLVED IN THE COMMUNITY: 450 MEMBERS ACTIVELY VOLUNTEER, CONTRIBUTING THOUSANDS OF HOURS TO THE WELL-BEING OF OUR COMMUNITY.

Healthy LifestylesPoor health and nutrition are barriers that can keep youth from meeting their full potential. The Boys & Girls Clubs third prior-ity is the promotion of Healthy Lifestyles. We encourage members in all our Clubs to adopt a healthy diet, practice healthy lifestyle choices, and make a lifelong commitment to fitness. We encourage this through both health and life skills and a vigorous assortment of sports, fitness, and recreation programs.

HEALTH AND LIFE SKILLSThis year the Boys & Girls Clubs debuted a community-wide health promotion initiative entitled, Healthy Places, Active Spaces.

In an effort to make healthy choices more available to youth, the Raleigh Boys Club opened the HOT (Healthy Options Too) Spot Snack Shop. At the HOT Spot, Raleigh Boys Club members prac-tice entrepreneurial skills and learn about healthy choices by selling healthy and affordable snacks.

The HOT Spot is a “beyond the classroom” application of the Boys & Girls Clubs health and life skills education curriculum. Reinforc-ing this, the Raleigh Boys Club also offers healthy cooking classes which integrates produce from the well-established Raleigh Boys Club garden- a garden program that has been going strong since 2006.

SPORTS, FITNESS AND RECREATIONNew in 2011, the Fitness Authority Challenge,

sponsored by Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina, was a competition between all seven

Clubs to see who could engage the most members in at least 30 minutes of physical activity over a 45 day period. The 1,046 participating members engaged in activities ranging from sports (like basketball, quick ball,

floor hockey, running, and kick-ball) to non-competitive activities like stepping, cheer-leading, jump roping, and Microsoft Ki-netics games. The Raleigh Girls Club won the challenge with

230 members participating in the competition.

2011 ANNUAL REPORT | 19

Investment OpportunitiesCHARITABLE GIFT ANNUITYBoys & Girls Clubs now offers gift annuities at $10,000 or more in stock or cash. The donor receives an immediate charitable income tax deduction for a portion of the gift, and Boys & Girls Clubs contracts with the donor to pay a guaranteed lifetime income to one or two annuitants at a current fixed rate of between 5.0% (age 60) to over 9.5% (age 90+) based on the annuitants’ ages. Annuity payments can begin immediately or be deferred to a future date. This donation option gives the donor the opportunity to increase personal annual income or retirement income.

FEDERAL EMPLOYEEYou can support the Boys & Girls Clubs through the Combined Federal Campaign. Our new five-digit CFC code numbers is 70623.

GIVING THROUGH YOUR WILLA specific dollar amount, specific asset or percentage of an estate may be specified in your will or trust to be paid to the Boys & Girls Clubs.

GIVING APPRECIATED ASSETSA charitable deduction for the income tax can be taken based on the fair market value of the stock at the time your gift is made. Gifts of low-basis stock can result in avoidance of capital gains tax. In some situations, a gift of closely held stock can allow you to maintain con-trol of the corporation while still claiming income tax deductions. A gift of appreciated real estate will allow you to avoid capital gains tax, as well as brokerage fees and closing costs.

GIVING LIFE INSURANCENew or current life insurance policies may be transferred or irrevo-cably assigned to the Boys & Girls Clubs as beneficiary, or you can retain ownership of a policy, pay the premium, and simply name the Boys & Girls Clubs as the beneficiary. Both have substantial tax benefits to you and your estate.

CHARITABLE REMAINDER AND LEAD TRUSTSA significant donation can be structured in a remainder trust with lifetime income for one or more beneficiaries and the remainder go-ing to the Boys & Girls Clubs or with the lifetime icnome going to the Boys & Girls Clubs and the remainder going to the beneficiaries. Trusts can be designed to meet your individual needs and provide savings on income, capital gains and estate taxes.
