More was a word we lived by at the Paley Center in 2011—more programming, more points of connection with our
audience, and more access to our collection. With an expanded digital and social media presence, we broadened our reach
far beyond our bases in New York and Los Angeles.
No single event exemplified this reach better than TEDxWomen, a one-day event that reached 10,000 people watching
our livestream at 115 viewing events around the world, from Brazil and India to South Africa and Libya. With twenty-six
speakers and performers—among them Gloria Steinem, Jane Fonda, Barbra Streisand, Dr. Oz, and Nicholas Kristof—
we attracted 200,000 Facebook impressions and 15,000 Tweets during the event. Boasting almost
38 million impressions overall, it truly positioned us on the global map.
This global reach was balanced by our deep roots in New York and Los Angeles, where we engaged with the community
through our Public Programs. We reached 500,000 television viewers with our 10-year commemoration event, Bearing
Witness: 9/11 Through the Eyes of NY1. Another two million viewers watched our network television special, TV’s Funniest
Holiday Moments, and one million more tuned into Thirteen/WNET for our signature interview series, At the Paley Center. In
Los Angeles, honorees Jimmy Fallon and the casts of True Blood, Supernatural, and Glee tweeted about PALEYFEST, which
headlined on 890 media outlets, creating such a buzz that its media impressions exceeded 100 million.
Global themes were echoed at PALEYDOCFEST as we delved into politics, power, and technology. The films Gasland;
Prosecutor; and Connected: An Autoblogography About Love, Death and Technology took us on a quest for the environment,
justice, and human connectedness across the Americas and into cyberspace. PALEYAFTERDARK welcomed the eternally
worldly Isabella Rossellini for her film, Animals Distract Me, and composer Eric Whitacre for Virtual Choir 2.0. Our
conversation about the documentary Hey, Boo: Harper Lee & To Kill a Mockingbird focused on the enduring appeal of a classic
American novel. Many of this year’s historic conversations will be accessible via the iCollection, a new intranet service
providing educational institutions and libraries with access to our archives. As well as sharing the collection online, we
engaged the next generation of local students who participated in our Education Programs by offering them yearlong
complimentary Membership to the Paley Center.
Our Industry Programs also reflected a focus on the next generation. The Media Council presented startups at the
Next Big Thing series, cultivated media innovators and leaders through the Generator program, and hosted events
on privacy, piracy, and sustainability in the fourth estate—dialogues we shared with the public via livestream. Our
International Council—themed Beyond Disruption—was held in our beautiful Beverly Hills location for the first time, and
the conversations started with the view from Hollywood before turning to emerging markets, with sessions on Asia, the
Middle East, and Latin America. Another first, we offered a conference app and streamed the event on our site, reaching
viewers in 140 countries. IC 2011 was also named a top conference for female business leaders, with featured speakers
Marissa Mayer of Google, Sheryl Sandberg of Facebook, Anne Sweeney of The Walt Disney Company, Susan Whiting
of The Nielsen Company, and Lauren Zalaznick of NBCUniversal.
Our greatest accolades are reserved for our chairman, Frank Bennack, for his long-standing commitment to the
institution and leadership that has paved the way for our successes. We thank the Board of Trustees and the Los Angeles
Board of Governors for their guiding expertise and support. Together, we can achieve new levels of engagement with our
global audiences, while shaping the Paley Center’s priorities to increase our value for the media industry and our relevance
for the local communities in Los Angeles and New York.

The Paley Center for Media is the premier institution dedicated to advancing the understanding of media—its artistic value, social impact, business dynamics, and historical importance—for the public and media professionals. The Paley Center, with locations in New York and Los Angeles, is home to the nation’s foremost public archive of television and radio programming, a collection of nearly 150,000 programs covering almost one hundred years of television and radio history, including news, public affairs programs, documentaries, performing arts programs, children’s programming, sports, comedy and variety shows, and commercial advertising. Drawing upon this collection and its unparalleled curatorial expertise, the Paley Center convenes the public, industry professionals, thought leaders, and the creative community for a broad range of forums—more than one hundred a year—that explore media’s past and present and anticipate its future. The Paley Center’s INSIDEMEDIA and ONSTAGE Public Programs examine and celebrate the creativity, the innovations, the personalities, and the leaders who are shaping media. Throughout the year, the Paley Center hosts discussions with influential newsmakers, journalists, and thought leaders on today’s important issues, as well as celebrates excellence in drama, comedy, and documentary film with a range of events that examine the creative process behind great entertainment. Annual highlights include the popular PALEYFEST: William S. Paley Television Festival held in Los Angeles and PALEYDOCFEST in New York. Celebrating important programs in the collection is also the basis for the popular PALEYAFTERDARK and PALEY100 evenings for higher-level patrons.
Educational outreach efforts, such as the University Seminar Series, bring select Paley Center discussions into college classrooms across the country via the Internet to connect with a network of more than five hundred schools in forty-nine states. Through the Industry Programs of its Media Council and International Council, the Paley Center also serves as a neutral setting where media professionals can engage in discussion and debate about the evolving media landscape. The Paley Center’s Media Council is a membership organization composed of top-level executives that serves as an intellectual center for the media industry and a forum for discussing major issues facing the world’s media, communications, and technology industries. Serving the global media community, the Paley Center’s International Council connects leading media executives from around the world with their U.S. peers to foster partnerships and share insights on the challenges and opportunities in the international media marketplace. The Paley Center was founded in 1975 by William S. Paley, the founder of CBS and a pioneering innovator in the industry. For more information, please visit paleycenter.org.

Public ProgramsThe Paley Center for Media’s collection provides the foundation for a wide range of Public Programs, including INSIDEMEDIA and ONSTAGE events, festivals, gallery exhibits, screenings, and more. These interpretive programs, developed by Paley Center curators, illuminate topics of social, historic, popular, or artistic significance while also providing the public with a new context in which to observe and analyze the media, and specifically how television, radio, and new media communicate and influence ideas, values, and our culture as a whole.
14
The Paley Center’s Public Programs examine and celebrate the creativity, innovations, personalities, and leaders who are shaping media. Throughout the year, the Paley Center hosts acclaimed events in New York and Los Angeles—utilizing clips from the collection and bringing the audience into the discussion with a Q&A—that examine the creative process behind great media and seek to illuminate how media is the lens through which we see and understand the world. Some of our most popular events are part of annual Festivals. The Paley Center has also established itself as the “communal living room” where people gather to experience media events together at our sold-out viewing parties.
The Paley Center’s Public Program events in New York are supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the City Council, and the New York State Council on the Arts.

Education
The Paley Center’s Education Department serves groups of students of all ages, educators, academic administrators, and community leaders with diverse constituencies. Using radio and television programs from the collection, Educators lead discussion-based classes that encourage critical thinking about key themes and issues that have shaped contemporary society. While the medium is television or radio, the subject may be advertising, the Vietnam conflict, the changing role of women, political campaigns, communities around the world, or many others.
The Education Department is also involved in a series of special initiatives that reach out to the community, such as Docu-Jam: A Youth Documentary Showcase and the Plural+ Youth Video Festival on Migration and Diversity.
Classes are presented to school groups both at the Paley Center in New York and offsite through video conferencing. Re-creating Radio workshops are held for groups by appointment in New York.
Funding for the Education Program has been generously provided by an endowment from the William Randolph Hearst Foundation and Leo J. Hindery, Jr.
For additional support, the Paley Center wishes to thank: Joan Ganz Cooney, The Dana Foundation, The Richard Eaton Foundation, Materials for the Arts, NYC Department of Cultural Affairs/NYC Department of Sanitation/NYC Department of Education.

TEDxWOMEN
December 1 in New York City and Los Angeles
The Paley Center hosted TEDxWomen: The Conversation Continues, a one-day conference that took a curated look at women through the lens of change agent, intellectual innovator, and idea champion. This conference builds on a vital partnership that began in 2010 when we partnered with TED Conferences—the originator of TEDTalks, a globally recognized format for presenting the best ideas and game-changing discoveries to an international audience—t0 produce TEDWomen. Since then, throughout 2011, the TEDWomen talks have been viewed online and across mobile platforms over thirteen million times.
As a leading curator of media content and convener of discussions about how media shapes the way we communicate, learn, and create, the Paley Center continued its exploration of the growing global awareness—spurred by media—of how women and girls are bringing about dramatic change to their communities, cities, and countries through their ideas, innovation, and leadership. TEDxWomen looked at some of the areas where women are challenging conventional thinking, overturning the accepted norms, and redefining how we can live and work together. It featured thirty-six speakers and performers—mostly women, but some men—including Shree Bose, Lauren Hodge, and Naomi Shah, three teenage girls who won the first Google Science Fair; Egyptian journalist Shahira Amin; New York Times columnist Nick Kristof; renowned medical expert Dr. Mehmet Oz; the captain and founder of the first female soccer team in Afghanistan, Shamila Kohestani; Nigerian-American poet and performer Iyeoka Ivie Okoawo; and American cultural icons Barbra Streisand and Gloria Steinem.
The TEDxWomen conference was independently curated and produced by the Paley Center, and held at our facilities in New York City and Los Angeles. More than 450 people gathered in our theaters to hear the speakers and to participate in the conversation. In a groundbreaking use of media technology, this technically and programmatically ambitious bicoastal conference alternated between the two venues, where each hosted two ninety-minute sessions featuring live speakers and performers, to produce a seamless simulcast that connected the audiences on both coasts. Beyond our theaters, we connected via our conference livestream with a global audience of 10,000 people gathered at 115 locally organized TEDxWomen viewing events, across all continents, in countries that included Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, and—for the first time—Libya and Saudi Arabia. What took place around the TEDxWomen main stages was a truly global conversation—in a two-week period, there were 200,000 Facebook impressions, 15,000 Tweets, and 30,000 livestreams.
TEDxWomen was hosted from New York by Pat Mitchell, who led the first session. Jane Fonda curated and hosted the other New York session. Trevor Neilson and Lisa Ling hosted the sessions in Los Angeles.
The conference was sponsored by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation; AOL; Warner Bros.; Accenture; Hearst Magazines; and Verizon Foundation.
Philanthropy New York Screenings
The Ford Foundation supported the Paley Center’s partnership with Philanthropy New York—a membership organization for leaders from private, corporate, and family foundations—to host a monthly documentary screening series for the city’s philanthropic community. This series introduces organizations to the documentary film as an alternative medium to promote their mission, build awareness around issues, and reach a broad audience. The screenings were open to Paley Center Members.
In 2011, the documentaries screened at the Paley Center were: Joan Rivers: A Piece of Work; Restrepo; 9500 Liberty; Gasland; The Island President; Inside Job; Hell and Back Again; and My Perestroika. The Ford Foundation also screened three documentaries from this series: Women, War & Peace; If A Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front; and Sing Your Song.
