Dear Bishop Machebeuf High School Community,

It was a beautiful morning on the first day of school, just back from summer break! Almost as if the students, parents and faculty had never left, no one missed a beat. In gratitude to God, and through His Son Jesus Christ, it is a true gift to welcome to our Academic Community of Faith more than one hundred new 9th graders. We are blessed here at Machebeuf to celebrate the tapestry of variety that is represented in our student body and we are off to a tremendous start of the 2011-2012 school year.

Although the first day of school is just now upon us, our students, faculty and coaches have been busy preparing for this new school year. From Summer Baseball and Cheer to Football Training Camp and Campus Ministry Retreats, to our new 9th Grade Summer Jump Start Program, students have been both preparing and developing the many programs that make for a successful and fun school year. With more than 40 Student Ambassadors leading the way, the Campus Ministry and Student Life programs welcomed our incoming 9th graders with two fun-filled days: New Student Formation and Orientation. We even had many of our students enjoy a faith-filled experience in Spain for World Youth Day this year with the Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI!

This new school year will see the addition of a couple of big ticket items that would not have been made possible if it were not for the tremendous stewardship of our families and benefactors. As you most likely know, BMHS is in the final stages of its strategic Building on a Tradition of Excellence Capital Campaign, and we have between now and December 2011 to really finish this great effort with strength and enthu-siasm. This year your students will experience a total of 10 Smart Boards in their classrooms; a brand new, state-of-the-art, intelligent fire alarm system, and we have updated the internal Information Technology hardware, software and server capacity for your students and their teachers! Thank you – thank you – thank you for continuing to provide the administration with the resources necessary to bring the best possible Catholic education experience to your students!

This year we were also able to start off with a wonderful gathering of our families at the Back to School BBQ! It was great to see so many of our families coming together again following the summer break as well as our returning families taking advantage of the opportunity to welcome our new families to the BMHS community. Thank you to the many parents and students who made the Back to School BBQ such a tremendous success – but I would especially like to thank the faculty who brought this great event together from its conception to its organization and its implementation. You truly are a remarkable team!

Finally, as we kick off this new school year, I would like to bring your attention to the exciting ways that we continue to communicate with our school community. Whether it is our website, our newsletter - The Beacon , or through our internal web service – Sycamore, you will find all of the necessary, important and celebratory content that you need to have a seamless and smooth transition into this new school year.

Welcome back and God bless each of you as we embark on yet another school year filled with the love of Christ!

BMHS Welcomes 116New Students

On the 18th of August 116, young people walked through the doors of BMHS for the first time as

students. There are 105 members of the Freshmen class of 2015 and 11 transfer students

joining us this year. On August 18th and 19th, 40 upper-classmen student ambassadors greeted

these new faces for New Student Formation and Orientation days. We would like to welcome you

all to your new home and our hope for you is that you find BMHS to be a place where you grow in knowledge and faith and

where you begin to flourish.

Academic Stats

Last year was another banner year for BMHS academics. In addition to having 100% of the class of 2011 gaining acceptance to a College or University, 88% of the Students who took the AP Exams in History and U.S. Literature and Composition scored a passing grade or higher. This compares to the National Average of 57% of stu-dents who take these exams score a passing grade. These statistics are only a snapshot into the value that BMHS places on academic excellence. Let’s make this another great academic year.

Farewell to Archbishop Chaput

In 1540, St. Francis Xavier said goodbye to his dearest friend in the world, St. Ignatius. Realizing that his

greatest friend had been called to do the Lord’s work elsewhere, St. Ignatius simply turned to Xavier and left him

with these words, “Go,” he said, “and set all afire.” As we say goodbye to our beloved Archbishop, we are grateful for your dedication, guidance and the love you have for the Archdiocese of Denver and for Bishop Machebeuf High School. You have shown us how to live our lives with true love and devotion for Jesus Christ through your humility and the love you have shown for your flock. What a privilege it has been to have you as our shepherd. May God bless and protect you as you are sent elsewhere to, “set all afire”.

Reunions

The BMHS Class of 1991 Reunion Recap had their reunion at the beginning of June.

The reunion weekend started with a fun barbeque at the home of Ann (Annes) Atencio and her husband Greg on Friday night, June10th. There was great food, plentiful drinks and excellent conversation. At dusk, the class watched a video prepared by the reunion committee with past and present photos of the class of 1991 and their families. And to top off the evening, attendees participated in “Machebeuf Trivia” to win great prizes provided by the school.

On Saturday, June 11th, the class met at The Inverness Hotel and Conference Center in The Spotted Dog Bar for some more fun, pub fare, pool, darts and catching up on old times.

Finally, on Sunday, June 12th, Father Michael Goyette (Class of 1991) gave mass for the attendees at the new campus at Lowry, followed by a private tour of the campus by current principal, Jessie Skipwith. To round off the morning, the Class of 1991 and their families met for a picnic and final farewell.

Through all of the efforts of the reunion committee and participating attendees of the reunion, the Class of 1991 was able to raise over $1000 to support the new Alumni Scholarship Fund.

Nurturing Community Looking Back

The Bishop Machebeuf High School class of 2001 had their 10 year reunion at the end of July, and gathered together for the first time in 10 years.

The reunion was attended by about 25 classmates of the class of 2001, many who had not seen each other since the date of our graduation. Alumni returned to their alma mater from as far away as New York, Montana, Utah and Kansas, as others, such as Eduard Lugo and Shannon (Reddick) Sacoman, returned to the school that they spend every day in as employees of Bishop Machebeuf High School.

A BBQ was held at the school, during which we reminisced about the past, toured the school, noticed all of the changes and remembered what it was like to move to the Lowry campus in the middle of our junior year.

We missed our classmates who could not make it and hope to see you again in 5 years!

in the Summer of 2011Class of 198625 Years...

The Bishop Machebeuf High School class of 1986 had their 25th reunion at the end of July, and truly had a blast catching up with old friends.

Friday night, July 29th was a cocktail party at the “new” (to us) high school site.

What a beautiful night and a great place to have a party! We boogied to our old 80s favorites, ate, and caught up with each other. There was a raffle that provided the alum’s with Machebeuf swag and the money was donated to the school. The night came to an end with a picture of most of the class that attended and, of course, a rousing rendition of the school song... that not all of us remembered!

Saturday evening, July 30th, we reconvened at Bible Park. There was a truly wonderful catered BBQ from Hometown Eats, some cocktails and good friends. We had some folks show up that couldn’t make it Friday night so that created another picture opportunity!

We certainly missed our classmates that were unable to join us or whom we could not find. We look forward to seeing everyone in 5 years for our 30th reunion (are we really that old?)!

Looking Back

Class of 198130 Years...The BMHS class of 1981 had their 30th re-union this summer and in attendance were 27 alumni. All were thrilled to catch up, to receive free door prizes from Machebeuf and to marvel at how old we are.

We hope to see many more of our class-mates at our 35th reunion in 5 years!

Catholic Faith

Planted and Built Up in Jesus Christ; firm in the faith.

Col. 2:7

On the weekend before their final week of summer, 39 BMHS students gathered together to begin the new school year rooted in Jesus Christ. This year’s Campus Ministry retreat

was held at Ponderosa Retreat center in Larkspur, Colorado. The theme for this retreat was taken from the theme of World

Youth Day in Spain, which was “Planted and built up in Jesus Christ; firm in the faith” (Col. 2:7). As the students learned what it truly means to be firmly rooted in Christ

through talks, praise and worship and Eucharistic Adoration, they also experienced gorgeous views of Pikes Peak on hikes,

glow-stick capture the flag and the highlight of the retreat, soapy dodgeball. As we all begin a new school year, may we

receive what the Lord has for us as we discover what it means to be truly planted, built up and firm in Him.

to the generosity of multiple donors, many who donated at the Buffalo Ball, BMHS received a huge technology upgrade this academic year. Because of this generosity, Machebeuf now has 10 smart-boards in our classrooms. Smart-board technology makes the learning experience more interactive as students and teachers interact directly with the board using touch-screen technolo-gy. In addition to smart-boards, BMHS was also able to provide brand new Toshiba laptop computers to the entire faculty, enabling teachers to be more mobile in the classroom and more creative and efficient with their lesson plans. Thank you to all of our donors for enhancing the learning experience at BMHS.

Kiewit Construction Company in The Community – High School Student Shadows DUS Project Team August 12, 2011 By The DBEtoday.com Publisher/Editor

From Left: Jaron Walker, Bishop Machebeuf High School Senior with His Mentor and Kiewit Project Engineer Darron Rolle

This summer Kiewit Construction Company provided an opportunity for a high school student to shadow its employees to learn more about the construction industry. This was the first time a job-shadow effort had been structured for the DUS project. Jaron Walker, entering his senior year at Bishop Machebeuf High School in Denver, was the participating student. His father Anthony Walker is one of the contractors on the Denver Union Station Project and helped to pave the way by inquiring about this opportunity.

We talked with Jaron and Darron Rolle, Project Engineer at Kiewit, to learn about this summer shadowing experience. Darron outlined the process for us. The shadowing consisted of six one-half day sessions. Jaron was expected to come in once or twice during the week.

Session One — For his first session, Jaron came to the Kiewit office at DUS and spent the day with Chris Waibel and Darron Rolle to receive an overview. As Darron relays, “We got Jaron signed up, handed him some PPE (personal protective equipment, i.e. hard hat, vests). I gave him a 2-3 hour overview of the project so he could understand all of the roles in construction. He learned what project engineers do, what superintendents, project managers, foremen and field engineers do. We then talked about what we are building at DUS. Jaron sat in the conference room as we went through a couple of presentations of what we were constructing for the project.”

Session Two — Jaron came back the following week for a half-day session. That day he shadowed B. J. Gehrki, Kiewit’s light rail area manager, responsible for managing the light rail cutover process. B. J. took Jaron out to the site to show him all of the work that was going on.
