Shane Stevens, Head Track & Field CoachNow in his 28th

season as the architect of the Bridgewater Track and Field program, Shane Stevens has molded the Eagles into one of the most competitive and respected teams in Division III Track and Field.

Last year, the BC men’s team turned in another solid season with a second-place finish at both the ODAC Indoor and Out-door Champinship Meets.

In 2008, the Bridge-water’s men’s team posted a banner seasons with a

second-place finish indoors before winning the ODAC outdoors

title. Stevens was named ODAC Men’s Track and Field Coach of the Year in both indoor and outdoor seasons.

Under his guidance, the BC men’s squad captured the 1997 ODAC indoor and outdoor titles and had two members earn Divi-sion III All-American status. Stevens also led the 1998 women’s outdoor team to their first ever conference title.

Stevens was named the 1997 NCAA Division III South/Southeast Region Coach of the Year for the outdoor season.

Stevens has been named ODAC Outdoor Coach of the Year nine times and ODAC Indoor Coach of the Year six times.

Stevens is a 1979 graduate of Bridgewater and was an All-ODAC defensive back and captain of the BC football team. He also holds a master’s in Business Administration from James Madison University. He serves as an instructor in the college’s Math and Computer Science department along with his coaching duties.

Stevens lives in Mt. Crawford along with his wife, Xan. The couple has two boys-Leland and Carson.

Brian Flynn begins his first season as as assistant track coach for the Eagles. In the fall, he completed his first season as head cross country coach at BC, leading the women to a third place finish at the conference meet and the men to a fourth-place finish..

Flynn comes to Bridgewater College after one year as a Division I assistant coach at University of North Carolina-Greensboro.

Prior to coaching at UNC-G, Flynn spent three seasons as an assistant coach

in cross country and track and field at Coe College, a Division III school in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Flynn is no stranger to the ODAC as he competed at Lynchburg College where he was a four-time all-conference runner in cross country. On the track he earned five ODAC individual titles and was a 12-time all-conference nominee. He was a member of eight ODAC champion-ship track teams and two cross country championship teams.

Melissa Baker Nice is currently in her sixth year as an assistant coach at Bridgewater.

A 2001 BC graduate, Nice coaches the men and women’s hurdlers and holds a USATF level 1 coaching certi-fication.

While at BC, Nice compiled 22 ODAC track and field championships, qualified for the NCAA meet four times, and was a NCAA All-American twice in the 400-meter dash and the 400-meter hurdles. She earned the

ODAC athlete of the year award in 1999, 2000, and 2001. Nice current-ly holds several Bridgewater College track and field records (individual and relays), and two ODAC conference records.

Melissa is married to Dr. Spencer Nice, a 2001 graduate of BC. They live in Waynesboro, VA with their two children.

Denver Davis begins his first season as an assistant coach with the Bridgewater College Eagles track and field program. In the fall, he served as an assistant on the cross country staff.

Davis received his bachelor of arts in history from Lynchburg College and his masters in history from George Mason University.

While at Lynchburg, Davis com-peted for the Hornets in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track. He was a member of two ODAC cross country

championship teams and four ODAC title teams in both indoor and out-door track. He was also a four-time academic All-ODAC pick in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track while at Lynchburg College.

Ray Decker begins his second sea-son as the throws coach on the Eagles track and field staff.

In the fall, Decker serves as a member of the Eagles football coaching staff.

Prior to his time at BC, Decker worked for seven-plus years with the Prince William County Park Authority.

Ray graduated in May 2010 from James Madison University with a Mas-ters degree in Sports Management.

2010 A Banner Year For Eagles

Damien Ward won the high jump at the ODAC Outdoor Cham-pionship Meet.

The Bridgewater College track & field teams turned in stellar efforts during the 2010 indoor and outdoor seasons, highlighted by All-American performances from Courtney Hartman and Chrissy Rhodes.

During the indoor campaign, the men finished second at the ODAC while the women put together a third-place finish.

For the men, Jacob Kroko was the lone individual champion as he won the shot put and was named ODAC Freshman of the Year. Leigh Bradley added a pair of second place finishes in the high jump and triple jump, Jake Griffin placed second in the 800 and Dalton Slagle took the runner-up spot in the 55 meter hurdles.

For the women, Hartman placed second in five individual events (shot put, long jump, 55 meters, 200 meters and 55 meter hurdles) to earn Top Performer honors at the ODAC meet.

Rhodes won the pole vault title for the third straight year while the distance medley relay team of Whitney Fitzgerald, Katie Leon-ard, Morgan Keplinger and Molly Smith, won the ODAC title with a new BC record time.

Hartman qualified for the NCAA Division III meet in the pen-tathlon and earned All-American honors with a fifth-place finish at the national meet.

Success continued for the Eagles during the outdoor season.The Eagles captured five individual titles en route to a second

place finish at the ODAC men’s championships. BC swept the sprints with Tyler Beiler winning the 100 and Julius Delbridge besting the field in the 200. In the field events, Bradley won the triple jump, Damien Ward won the high jump and Thomas Bell placed first in the triple jump.

The women won four individual titles with Katie Cummings leading the way with wins in the shot and discus. Rhodes won the pole vault for the third straight year and Keplinger took the crown in the 800.

The best was still to come for the Eagles as Hartman and Rhodes both qualified for the NCAA Championships.

Rhodes claimed All-American honors in the pole vault with a sixth-place finish while Hartman became just the second Bridgewater student-athlete to claim a national title at the NCAA Track & Field Championships as she outlasted the field to win the heptathlon title.

Hartman was named the ODAC Outdoor Track & Field Athlete of the Year and the South/Southeast Region Field Athlete of the Year.

Rhodes also added several academic honors during the outdoor season. She was named the ODAC Outdoor Track & Field Scholar Athlete of the Year and was selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Second Team: Christina Rhodes. She also received the NCAA Elite 88 Award. That honor goes to the student-athlete participating in the national meet who carries the highest GPA.

MELISSA BAKER was Bridgewater’s first female to earn All-American honors in track when she placed in the top six in the 400 meters at the 2001 NCAA Indoor Championship Meet.

NATHAN TURNER earned All-American honors in the shot put at both the NCAA Indoor and Outdoor Championships during the 2008 season.

The College

College athletics has evolved to the point where total physical preparation is necessary to be successful. Bridgewater employs a five-member athletic training staff. Under the tutilege of Director Barbara Long, the group of Sarah Cook, Chase Hale, Ellen Hicks and Scott Powers serve as Assistant Athletic Trainers for the entire Bridgewater College Athletics Department.

Long is a graduate of Bridgewater College with a degree in Biology; United States Sports Academy with master’s degrees in Sports Medicine and Fitness Management and is currently enrolled in the Doc-tor of Education program in Organzational Leadership at Shenandoah University. She was certified by

the Board of Certification in 1989 and is licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia Board of Medicine as an athletic trainer. Her career has had her working with professional and high level amateur athletes at places like the World University Games, US Olympic Training Center, and several professional football camps. She has also served as Head Athletic Trainer at Broadway High School and as clinical ATC for RMH Rehab Services, and Body Ease Physical Therapy, PC. Barbara spent 10 years as a clinical athletic trainer and through this work developed community education presentations and publications dealing with Exercise and Aging, Fall Prevention, Increasing the Functional Limits of Aging, and Children and Sports. Barbara and

her husband, Stuart, reside in the Lacey Springs area with their two children, Tyler and Cassie.Cook hails from Lewiston, Maine. She has a bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training from Colby-Sawyer

College and a Master of Arts degree in Sport Psychology from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities. Sarah spent a summer as the head athletic trainer at J Robinson Intensive Basketball Camps and has experi-ence working with Division I Men’s Ice Hockey and Men’s Gymnastics. She resides in Harrisonburg with her menagerie of small animals. Her primary responsibilities are men’s and women’s soccer and softball.

Hale joined the Bridgewater staff in the spring of 2000 as the Assistant Athletic Trainer. He has a Bach-elor’s degree in Health Science/Athletic Training and a Master’s degree in Health Science Education from James Madison University. Chase is currently pursuing his Doctorate of Education degree from Shenan-doah University in organizational leadership. For two years he was contracted from RMH Rehab Ser-vices, where he also worked within the occupational and physical therapy departments, to provide athletic training services at Bridgewater College. In 2002, Hale moved to a full-time faculty position in the Health and Exercise Science Department where he teaches kinesiology and athletic training courses. In addition to teaching, Professor Hale also serves as the clinical education coordinator for the athletic training education program. His career has had him working with collegiate baseball, football, soccer, and volleyball. Cur-rently, he works with the College’s field hockey, lacrosse, and tennis teams. Hale lives in Grottoes with his wife Ada and their three children Charlie, Stella, and Eliza.

Hicks has a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology from Bridgewater College, and a Master of Educa-tion degree from Northwestern State University in Health Promotion. She was certified by the Board of Certification in 1996 and is licensed by the Commonwealth of Virginia Board of Medicine as an Athletic Trainer, Pharmacy Technician, and Emergency Medical Technician. Ellen has 11 years clinical athletic training experience; the last ten of those years were with RMH Rehab Services. She has also spent the last nine years working for Rockingham County Public Schools at Broadway High School as the Head Athletic

Trainer. Ellen resides in Port Republic and primar-ily works with Volleyball, Women’s Basketball, and Track & Field.

Powers comes to Bridgewater College with a va-riety of athletic training experience. As a graduate of North Dakota State University and James Mad-ision University, he has spent 27 years working in the clinical and secondary school environments. Athletic training has allowed him to work with several international sports teams in many different countries including the 1996 Olympics Games in Atlanta. Scott resides in Dayton with his wife Pam and their sons, Justin, Jake, Joshua and Jason.

The mission of the Bridgewater College's Strength and Conditioning Program is to assist BC athletes in enhancing their athletic performance. Our goal is to undertake this mission by reducing the risk of athletic injury, developing the force potential (strength and power) of each athlete, enhancing the specific movement patterns related to their activity and addressing the energy needs for each sport. Ultimately we intend to maximize the athletic potential of each of our student athletes.

Stephon Healey will begin his seventh year as the Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coordinator. Healey came to the States from London, England. Healey studied as an intern under both Keith Morgan at the National Sports Center in Crystal Palace, London and with Edgar Curtis at the Leeds Rhinos (professional rugby team). Healey has experience in competing and coaching at both Powerlifting and Olympic lifting meets.

Healey played collegiate football at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. A graduate from the University of Greenwich (London), Healey has his un-dergraduate degree in Education and Human Movement Studies. Healey is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and a Certified USA Weightlift-ing club coach.

Joe Soltis is entering his eighth year as the Head Strength and Condition-ing Coordinator at Bridgewater College. Soltis comes to Bridgewater college as a USA Weightlifting Club Coach. He actively competes in Olympic Weight-lifting and won his weight class at the Arnold Classic in 2009.

Soltis played running back for Emory & Henry and spent four years as an assistant coach at Glenvar High School in Salem, Va. from 1990-94.

Soltis is also the Offensive Coordinator for the Bridgewater College Foot-ball team. He resides in Bridgewater and is married to the former April Fifer, a 2004 Bridgewater graduate and a teacher in the Rockingham County Public Schools

STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING

Celebrating its 35th year of operations, the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) is one of the nation’s largest Division III conferences. The 14- member ODAC, including one associate member, stands as the second-largest multi-sport NCAA Division III conference in the country.

The league was formed on May 18, 1975 as the Virginia College Conference and began operations in September of 1976. (The name change to Old Dominion Athletic Conference became effective January 1, 1976). Charter members were eight colleges located in the state of Virginia: Bridgewater College, Eastern Mennonite College, Emory & Henry College, Hampden-Sydney College, Lynchburg College, Randolph-Macon College, Roanoke College and Washington and Lee University. From its initial year of operation through the 1981-82 academic year, the ODAC sponsored competition in 10 men’s varsity sports, including football, soccer, and cross country in the fall; basketball, wrestling, and indoor track and field in the winter; and baseball, golf, tennis, and outdoor track and field in the spring. Women’s sports were added prior to the 1982-83 school year. Today, the ODAC has grown to Sponsor championships in 22 sports (10 men and 12 women) and houses nine full-time coeducational institutions with four single-gender schools making up the current 13 full-time members. The confer-ence expanded in the late 1980s, early 1990s and most recently in 1999. Virginia Wesleyan became the 13th member of the conference in 1988 and began full-scale competition in the league in the 1989-90 academic year. Guilford College, voted into the conference in the spring of 1990, began competing for conference championships in the 1991-92 season. The Catholic University of America (DC) was accepted for associate membership in football on January 12, 1999.

Over the past 16 years the conference and the City of Salem, Va., have gained national attention through hosting five NCAA Division III championships in football, men’s basketball, softball, base-ball, women’s lacrosse, and volleyball. The growing list of titles passed out in Salem began in the fall of 1993 with the DIII Football Championship. Through the 2008-09 academic year, the conference and city have hosted 46 NCAA Division III Championships since the ‘93 Stagg Bowl. This year, the two will serve as hosts to the DIII football and men’s basketball championships.
