Tagen Bierley, a native of Colorado Springs, is in her first year as a graduate assistant at Chadron State College.

She was a four-year letterwinner and three-year starter at Cheyenne Mountain High School and was the starting setter much two years at Adams State.

While at Adams, she averaged more than 11 assists per set both years she was at Adams State. She was also a member of the Chadron State squad. She redshirted as a junior after transferring from Adams State and she played in seven sets the following year.

Bierley is working mainly with the setters and back row while at Chadron State.

Head Coach Natasha MarquisNatasha Marquis, who has been

a graduate assistant at the University of Nebraska-Kearney the past three seasons, was hired as the new head volleyball coach for Chadron State in February.

Marquis, a native of King City, Calif., replaces Amy Spruiell, who resigned in November.

Marquis joined the UNK staff in the summer of 2008 and she helped guide the Lopers to three consecu-tive Rocky Mountain

Athletic Conference championships. The Lopers also qualified for the NCAA Division II playoffs three times and had a cumulative record of 96-12, including a 54-2 mark in the RMAC.

In 2010, UNK advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division II National Championship and ended the season ranked fifth in the final Ameri-can Volleyball Coaches Association Poll.

Marquis is hoping her accomplish-

ments as an assistant translate to success at Chadron State.

“I’m really excited for the oppor-tunity and I appreciate the support I’ve received,” she said. “I truly enjoyed every-one I met while in Chadron. It’s going to be a great atmosphere and I’m looking forward to all the potential this team has.

“I want to get back to the basics and I see a lot of passion in these girls. This is a great situation because the quality these girls possess. I’m excited to see where our strengths lie because I know we have them, and then we can tackle our weaknesses one at a time.”

In addition to her coaching duties at UNK, Marquis was an assistant coach for the Nebraska Gold club team and was an assistant director and coach for the Lopers’ summer volleyball camps.

She had a solid collegiate career as a right side and middle hitter at Divi-sion I Albany (N.Y.) for two years after playing two seasons at Butte College in California.

For the Albany Great Danes, Mar-quis was part of a program that won 44 matches in 2006 and 2007.

At Butte, she hit .319 and aver-aged 2.44 kills per game as a sopho-more, helping the Roadrunners win a second straight Golden Valley Confer-ence title.

Why the eagles? Legend has it that in 1915, just four years after Chadron State College opened, a young Chadron boy robbed an eagle nest in the hills just south of the campus and kept one of the young birds as a pet. As the bird grew, the young lad—Clinton Smith—took it to a couple of football games. Pretty soon, fans were calling the Chadron teams the Eagles. To make the story even spicier, Smith later played center for the Eagles, serving as captain of the 1925 team that went undefeated and won a 3-0 decision over the University of Colorado. There’s a stuffed eagle in the trophy case at the Dawes County Historical Museum that is said to be the original eagle that Smith had as a pet.
