The Shelter for Help in Emergency is the only agency in Planning District Ten (City of
Charlottesville and the five surrounding counties of Albemarle, Greene, Fluvanna, Louisa and
Nelson) providing comprehensive services to women and children who are victims of violence
within their home or relationship. Offering services 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, the Shelter
utilizes professional staff and trained volunteers to carry out program goals. Shelter services
include a 24-hour crisis hotline, supportive counseling, case management services, court
advocacy and accompaniment, services and support to the Spanish-speaking community,
educational groups, allied professional training and consultation. The 24-hour hotline is
available for crisis intervention and referral assistance. Women and children needing a safe
place to escape the violence in their home may seek temporary, emergency housing through the
residential facility. Abused men are offered support services and temporary emergency shelter
in a safe alternative location. Clients seeking safe, longer-term accommodations are referred to
the Shelter’s Transitional Housing Program for a period of three months to two years. Victims
of abuse not needing residential services are readily offered counseling and support services by
program staff. All shelter programs and services are designed to empower victims of abuse to
become self-sufficient; to assist women and children to break the cycle of abuse; and to create a
community that is more supportive of victims and holds abusers accountable for their actions.
For over 32 years, the Shelter for Help in Emergency has been providing free, confidential
services to victims of domestic violence and their families. Each year, through both residential
and non-residential programs, we respond to nearly 1000 hotline calls, provide close to 4,000
nights of safe shelter to more than 200 women and children, and assist many other victims of
domestic violence in our community through the court system and with supportive outreach
counseling. In order to be eligible for these services, one simply needs to call our 24-hour
hotline—we have no restrictions based on income, insurance status, lifestyle, or other concerns.
We work with victims of domestic violence as well as concerned friends and family,
community members, and allied professionals. While domestic violence can and does happen
to anyone, the majority of our residential clients tend to fall at or below the poverty level, and
many are homeless because of the domestic violence in their lives.
